Why does my toddler insist on being carried?

My toddler walks fine, but whenever we go anywhere, he cries until I pick him up and carry him. Why doesn't he want to walk?

The Bump Expert

Your toddler may be able to walk short distances around your living room like a champ. But send him out into the hustle and bustle of the real world, and he won't be able to keep up the adult pace for long. He simply can't move his little legs fast enough, let alone for more than a few minutes -- and trying leaves him exhausted (and you frustrated). Plus, it's uncomfortable for him to keep his hand raised high in the air to hold yours.

Until he's around three years old, he'll probably need his stroller most of the time. You can also try making the idea of walking a game, where it's a trade-off: If he walks to a set landmark, he can sit in the stroller until the next landmark and so on. Just make sure you praise him -- especially now that you know how hard he's working!

Why does my toddler insist on being carried?

My daughter walks all the time, but when we go into a restaurant or unknown place with more people she wants me to carry her- I think she just feels overwhelmed for a while until she gets comfortable with her environment. Usually after a while she gets down and starts exploring.

Why does my toddler insist on being carried?

My 22 mo old daughter can run like lightning, but when she gets home from school and Im in the kitchen cooking she always "want up pease". We've been apart all day, there is a new baby in the house, and I'm working on something she cant see from her level. Sure it leaves me one handed, but it gives her a chance to rest, us a chance to snuggle, and her a new perspective and something to learn. If I need both hands I just ask her to help mommy by standing or some other task that needs to be done on her feet... and it works great! Besides, in a few months, im sure she wont want me to hold her any more anyway!

Why does my toddler insist on being carried?

Mine little man is 22 months & does the same. He will run, climb, jump, & be a little tornado right up until we arrive someplace new. Then he is stuck to me like glue. Up in my arms head on my shoulder. He will refuse to let go. The closet I can get to him getting down is sometimes I can get him to let go of me for his dad or my sister if we are with her.
