Is it too early to start teaching my child to read?

My toddler is really getting the hang of identifying letters of the alphabet. Is it too early to try to teach her to read? How would I get started?

Re: My toddler is really getting the hang of identifying letters of the alphabet. Is it too early to try to teach her to read? How would I get started?

The Bump Expert

The brains of most children haven't developed the skills it takes to read until around age five or six. It's possible that your toddler will pick it up sooner, but giving her reading lessons generally won't speed up the process.

It's never too early, however, to get her prepared -- and excited -- for her reading days. And the best way to do that is to read to her. Make the reading experience interactive by letting her pick out the book she wants you to read, holding the book in a way that she can see the pictures clearly, and asking her to point to the recognizable items on each page.

Is it too early to start teaching my child to read?

I am a graduate clinician at the Texas State University Speech-Language-Hearing clinic and we get asked this question by our clients all of the time. No matter how old your child is, you can prepare their minds for reading by: having a routine where reading is involved, you pointing to the words as you read (not just the pictures) because a child needs to understand that you are getting the story from the print, not just the pictures, finding books that rhyme; this promotes awareness of the sounds in the written and spoken word, also make your reading voice exciting for your child, and ask your child questions while you read...like what do you think will happen next, or tell me what you see; this builds their language skills!

If your child is interested, it's never too early for anything. My daughter can read over 100 words now at only 19 months, and she LOVES learning them, sounding them out and telling me what letters are in them. As long as the interest is there, take advantage of it! :)

You don't need to "officially" start teaching her how to read, but if you keep reading great books together, pointing out the letters when you see them throughout your day, and involving her through questions, you are teaching her how to read. :-)

Is it too early to start teaching my child to read?

My child is hitting the year milestone in six days and loves books! Naturally he can not read yet but loves to be read too. Reading to your child and pointing to words as you say them can help your child recognize letters and the sounds they make. I wouldn't say officially teaching lessons is necessary just read to your child and encourage books as much as you can he or she will start to understand and recognize words when their brain is able to do so. Keep up the good work!

My son is 15 months and on step 5 of My baby can read. He loves his videos, books & flash cards. The videos are the only tv he will sit down and watch start to finish. His comprehension has improved on a regular basis.

No it's not too early. I started reading to my son @ 2-3 mos of age, because although they can't read, they can hear how you enunciate and pronounce words and this will help when they do start to talk between age 1 and 2 yos. My son is 15 mos now and he says "stop", "thank you", ma ma, dada and he understands kiss me. So I think it's very helpful. My pediatrician says read to him lots!

Is it too early to start teaching my child to read?

I am a firm believer that if they are interested then it's time. I never push my kids and I was worried as my daughter was not really interested in reading and all her friends were way in front of her. But when she was ready she picked it up really quickly because she wanted to do it. So I really think it's down to the child as to when it is time. If they are not ready they just tune out and dont learn anything. car walker

I read to my daughter aloud when I was pregnant and of course after she was born, she was picking out small words "at the and an" at about a year and a half about the time she could say them properly. She is now 5 and in kindergarten, she reads at a third grade level and depending on the book higher (she can do really well when the topic is dinosaurs or ninjas)

How old your child is? Your child's age helps me to give you a properly answer, anyway I believe that you are the only one who can see when your child is ready to read. You can start by teaching your child to read and if she can not coop then you stop the process and start it over a month. You have to be very careful to not force your child because it can have negative effects on her mental health. I have a healthcare administration degree and I know what I am talking about. Take care of you and your child.

I had this dilemma with my daughter. At first I started reading her children's books and after a few weeks I printed her Phonics Worksheets. Be patient your kid will learn to read in his own pace

Is it too early to start teaching my child to read?

It is never too early. And I believe kids can read simple stuff earlier than 5 or 6. My cousins kids were playing with chalk on the sidewalk one day when I was watching them. Her 10 year old and I were talking about what she was drawing and one of the pictures was of a dog. We started talking about dogs in general and I glanced over at what the 2 year old (he was 2 and about 4 months old) was doing and he had written clear as day DOG. He had been read to since he was born and had the alphabet refrigerator magnets which he played with all the time and we would show simple words... His mom (my cousin) could read simple books at 3. This is not going to be every child, but if your child shows signs of starting to read, encourage it no matter how young. Read to them as often as you can. Every thing you can do to encourage reading helps your LO's learn.

That is wonderful! I would totally take advantage of her interest in reading. Of course, you don't want to pressure her or do anything to take the enjoyment out of it. My mom read to me every afternoon when I was a toddler and to this day, I love reading. Also, you could start teaching her phonics since she is doing well recognizing the letters. There are tons of educational toys that would teach the sounds of the letters and I'm sure you could find a cute DVD that she could watch. You could also go traditional and use flashcards or an alphabet book. I wouldn't put her in a reading class or anything like that simply because the new environment might be stressful for her and she's doing so well at home already. She is probably happiest and most comfortable with you at home.

Is it too early to start teaching my child to read?

I don't think it's to early for your child to start reading as long as he likes it. For example, mine started to read when he was 5 years old and at 8 years he wanted to learn spanish because my husband is from Spain but he was too busy to teach him. Therefore, Spanish Lessons Brisbane was the best solution for him and for us.

It's never to early for a child to learn to read, in my opinion, as sooner, the better. You can begin reading him some story books and even some Psychic Readings.

It's never too early to teach your child how to read, I've been doing it since I was 5 and I have never regretted it until this day. This has made me smarter and when I got my first job, my work perfume smelled of old books and beautiful stories.

Read, read, and read more to your child. Let them fall in love with reading and learning. All the rest will follow in due time, when your child is ready and interested in reading on her or his own. Until then, cherish the special time you have together listening to words, and looking at beautiful images. Enjoy!

My 18 month monster cant sit still but he can listen while playing with his Thomas trains or block so I sit in his room and read three books each afternoon while he plays. I heard that TV as a backround noise can be destructive to learning but a parent reading in the backround can help them lingually. Either way, can't hurt right?

Is it too early to start teaching my child to read?

During my career as a teacher, I have come across some cases of children that started reading when they were 2, but these are geniuses. I would advise to encourage the children manifesting their need and wish to read to actually facilitate them into games and activities proper to their age. There will be plenty of time for attending college and stuff like that. However, this predicts a beautiful academic future for them.

Is it too early to start teaching my child to read?

If your child acts like he wants to read, namely he is looking for books and magazines throughout the house, if the is bringing them to you and showing you he is striving to understand words in page titles and so on, you should not refrain his willing to do so. This means he is a rare kind, a very smart child and he needs to be encouraged. He might as well end up as being one of those students to finish their studies with the highest grades in their entire generation of peer students.

Is it too early to start teaching my child to read?

As long as you keep on reading, your child[ren] will definately get the hang of a few words here and there, but until about kindergarten age, will not really be able to pick up how different letter groupings make certain sounds. My 3 year old has been able to identify specific letters perfectly since 18 months! But only recognizes a few small words like 'cat', 'dog' and 'mom' and his own name 'jaiden'. Just pair more with pictures, and more will catch one. Flash cards are fun, too!

mishalectric |

Is it too early to start teaching my child to read?

I feel that when you feel your child is interested in reading then only you go for it .Show some flash cards, you read from story book. You prepare some charts and stick on the wall. While playing you make your child read from the charts. Never force the child to study. Let the child develop interest for it.

Is it too early to start teaching my child to read?

You already have started. I'm guessing your child can read environmental print, like the McDonald's sign or the box of his favorite cereal. These are the building blocks to reading. Work on knowing what a letter is, first, then a word, and don't forget that the spaces between words are important too. When you walk up to a business door, have your tot trace the letters on the sign as you (or he) says the name. DO NOT spend a whole bunch of money on a boxed program. Reading is much more meaningful when it is fun and a bonding experience. The best thing you can do for your child if you want him to be a reader is to READ TO HIM and read to him OFTEN!

Is it too early to start teaching my child to read?

I'm sorry, but it is not true that the brains of most children haven't developed the skills to read until around five or six. The real problem is that the words aren't big enough, don't stand out enough on the page and most people don't expect them to read, so they don't spend the time on it. Read "How to Teach Your Baby to Read" by Glenn Doman You'd be amazed with how much your children are capable of at earlier ages and wonder why why don't spend more time and energy on helping them do what they LOVE doing (learning) when they're brains are actually the most acceptable to doing it. I taught all of my children (4) sign language and by age 1 they had a spoken/signed vocabulary base of over 200 words. At that point, I just stopped counting. They were reading early as well, as young as 3 years old, and reading on an 8th grade level by age 6. As long as we keep it relaxed, simple and fun, they will soak it up faster than we can dish it out!
