Are there home remedies for my toddler’s colds?

My poor little guy is sick so often -- sniffles galore -- and I tend to be partial to home remedies over OTC meds. Are there any home remedies for kids with colds?

Bulb syringes can ease his symptoms (until he’s able to blow his nose with a tissue -- usually around age two). And many adult home remedies for the common cold can help relieve your toddler too: steam, keeping his head elevated, honey (now that’s he’s over a year old), fluids, and, most of all, sleep. But unfortunately the best cure for the common cold in toddlers is, simply put, time.

medicated chest rub on the soles of the feet. don't ask me why but it works like a charm for my little guy.

i put baby vicks on his chest and upper back. but instead of vicks on his feet i went to the local health food store and bought peppermint oil. and rub a drop of that on each foot. works very well for him. i also take him a vapor bath every night before bed and when he wakes up. works great.

I use saline drops in my little guy's nose and wait a couple minutes before suctioning out with a bulb syringe. It seems to losen up a lot more mucous and help clear his nose better.

Be a little cautious with Vicks. When my 1 year old daughter got sick I asked the Doctor about Vicks since the box said not for children under the age of 2. She said that Vicks and other similar items can actually be worse for young kids, it can make the nasal passages swell and get stuffier and harder to breathe. If it works for your child I guess keep at it but I won't be using it. I do totally agree with nasal drops. Almost completely takes a cough away since she can just swallow the mucus.

With Vicks, it's simply a matter of using the version specific for babies and you should be fine.
