Toddler

Walking, talking, exploring new foods, and taking steps towards greater independence are just a few of the wonderful new things that you will witness as your infant becomes a toddler. Picky eating, raging tantrums, and separation anxiety are some of the less wondrous developments that you will experience. But don’t stress! We have answers to the most pressing questions that moms raising toddlers have. How much sleep does my toddler really need? How much television should I let my toddler watch? How do I potty-train my toddler? How can I keep my toddler’s tantrums under control? A toddler may test your limits but having (and consistently utilizing!) strategies that work can make a big difference. From 0-3 years old is a time of dramatic development for a child’s brain development – this is when he learns how to think, speak, learn, and reason. This early development needs to be nurtured and parents are critical to helping their toddlers get on track for developing healthy patterns that will lead to a lifetime of learning. What can you do with your toddler to foster his intellectual, social, and emotional development? What you can do to help lay down the foundation of success later in school? We have expert tips and advice that will equip you with the know-how to nurture your child’s development. No matter what your parenting style, challenges, or concerns, we can help you develop an approach that works for you and enables you to lay the groundwork for raising a healthy, happy tot.

My toddler just turned 1 a few weeks ago and already had developed the habit of slapping, hitting and biting when he is told no. How do I fix this?

by tcsmoot

When is the best time to completly take away the bottle? i heard about a year, and my daughter's seven months, and i gradually giver her less and less.

by Jaylee11

@sanne84 Take that bottle away!! Even if she doesnt drink milk for week make that the only thing you offer her and she will be drinking out of a sippy in no time!! I know that its hard but you can do it!!

by jlanderson4

@charlie2 DD did this to me also. I work part time retail and I found a correlation between her waking up screaming and my working a long shift, not being home for bedtime or working two or more days in a row. She stopped after a couple weeks. Good luck!

by cuadrakaren

Anyone else have a toddler who's sleeping pattern has taken a drastic change? He was a great sleeper, but for the past couple of weeks he has been SCREAMING. I can't figure out what's going on. He's not sick, I've given him tylenol for teeth. He wants to sleep in our bed and I REALLY don't want to get that started.

by charlie2

@christieprego I would be suspicious and terrified like you...... I agree it does seem strange to me and I think you should TRUST YOUR INSTINCTS. That's great that shes a great house-keeper but if you feel something is off or strange find someone else!!!! Just my opinion :)

by AKP007

My daughter will be 2 in February, and still takes a bottle. She gets one in the am when she wakes, and one at bedtime. I know it's definitely time to wean her off the bottles, but she won't drink milk any other way. I've tried sippy cups, warming the milk like in the bottles, even adding a little chocolate syrup so it tastes better. Any ideas. I want her to get the benefits of drinking milk, but I know she can't drink a bottle forever.

by sanne84

my 2 year old doesn't hardly say any words what could be wrong he mainly says dada and thats it

by kstirnaman

My toddler takes such a long time to get in her car seat. Any tips?

by rachswork1

@christeeprego The babysitter was probably nervous because you came home and your kid was unhappy. She probably thought you might leap to an illogical conclusion and she would lose her job. If she is the perfect babysitter in every other way, I really doubt she is trying to make your son cry on purpose. My son is 21 months old and sometimes he has a sobbing fit for no reason. Get the nannycam if you want, but I really don't think it's necessary.

by katedoe

I came home early today from work and found my 18 mo old son crying hysterically sitting on tyhe rug in his room. Tears streaming down, really sobbing and worked up. The babysitter looked surprised I was home and picked him up and started nervously chatting about the day. I asked why he was crying (nicely) and she said "oh we were playing peek-a-boo and he got scared." This doesn't feel right to me. In my gut I feel it. My imagination is freaking me out. Is she one of these people that enjoys making a baby cry and then soothes them? Is she taunting him, angry or stressed out? I am planning on getting a nanny cam immediately. She is otherwise supernanny. She cleans even though we tell her she doesn't have to. She makes crafts with him (her idea) and listens to everything we say (diet, naps, etc). So I don't get it. Everything I am reading (and believe you me, I am a googling manaic reading everything I can find on babysitters and emotional abuse) says the baby will shy away or be afraid of the sitter after a while. This is her 4th week with us. I am afraid to ask but what do you think? Any suggestions or comments? Ugh.

by christeeprego

are there any good dvd's for being a big brother?

by ginmoti1

I am so glad my LO is finally walking and drinking whole milk. Next accomplishments are sippy cup and eating with a spoon.

My son just turned 3 this month and potty training is not going so well... all the kids in his class are moving up to the 3 yr old class and im afraid he is going to be left behind. has anyone else had this problem? and what did you do?

by Tracijohns2010

My 17 month old son bites me. He doesn't bite anyone else, just me. Usually when he is giving me kisses or rasberries. How can I stop this and why is he doing it? Has this happened to anyone else?

Question: So my son is 25 months old a reallly sweet boy! Whenever we go to the playground or library the kids are not nice. They will taunt him or just be rude, push him, call him names..I get so mad! I have even told the kids not to act that way and so on, but the parents don't even care or notice. Am I the only one that wants to give out some spankings and parenting lessons? I dred going to the park with him because most of the time the kids are naughty and I feel so sprry for my little man. He is handsome and so funny and he shouldn't have such a bad time trying to have fun.

by ryeryemama

Krisd. My son is 25 months and he just started talking alot more this month! But he is in early intervention and has a speech pathologist, some kids just take longer to speak. I know some other mothers that put their children in early intervention just for their speach, maybe it is something you can look into? It is really a great program!

by ryeryemama

For all of the mommies and daddies trying to get through potty training!! Although pull- ups are still an easy way to contain the messes and ease the cleanup of unsuccessful potty training, they are a set back in our oppinion. Our son was quick to realise going pee in his underwear was a lot less pleasant than an ultra absorbant pull-up! Also, we introduced the potty chair WAY before we knew he was ready to use it. This way he grew familiar with the potty chair and what it was for. I never had to use this method but have tons of friends who had success with putting the potty chair in a "safe" place, such as their childs room, then when they were confortable using it the potty chair was slowly moved closer to the bathroom.

by BenLynRen

My son is 14 months old, and I switched him from breast milk to whole milk at 12 months. He transitioned fine and would eat it with meals but about 2 weeks ago he started eating less and less food and only wants his milk. I've tried not giving it to him and making him eat his normal food but it just ends up in a screaming fight or he acts like he suddenly isn't hungry anymore. Suggestions?

by BreannaO

We are getting ready to move to Washington. Without a date. Meaning everything is way up in the air. I have to work on the packing with an almost 2-year old (gotta wait two weeks, til after his birthday party). Don't know for sure how I'm going to pack with him running around crazy. I just hope it doesn't freak him out too much. And on top of everything else we are TTC. Ahhhh! Stress! Ain't it ... naw, great is not the word!

by Cheriemimi

@shallenges First I would tell your 17year old when she has kids of her own then she can take care of them and tell her you have been a parent a lot longer then she has lol,of course in a nice way.I only have 5 daughters but potty training was easy except for one my 3 year old she did the same stuff took off her diaper ran around the house naked, and what I did when she started showing signs I would leave her naked and then try it for a day or two if he wants to hell use the potty if not then put the diapers back on him he might just want to know whats in his diaper lol,and then give it a couple of months try again till he gets it as far as your husband goes good luck with that one,if hes anything like my husband he doesn't listen to well and think he's knows everything I have a husband with the male ego thing then he finds out my way is usually right 70 percent of the time lol,the best thing I can say is if it's a power struggle with your hubby I would give in sometimes men need to feel like they have a opion when it comes to the kids and a say so,but give in on the small stuff.Women are better at raising children cause were more emotial and we understand there needs better and we know more about children, one time me and my husband got in this big debate about our children and just to show him that of course I know more about the kids I asked him what size clothes do they wear he told me 22x LOL I have a 12,10,8,3,and 5 month old I don't know where he got the 22x from so I told him while he was out to pick one up 3 shirts size 22x,after 3 hours he finally came home with no 22x's of course I knew he was going on a wild goose chase but I had to give in for his sake then show him he was wrong, maybe something silly and stupid as that might help u.

by andrea216

I plan on starting the potty training process with my 1 year and 7 month old son. His teachers at his daycare say that he is ready since he will put his hand down his diaper after he has a bowel movement and show the teacher and us if we don't quickly change his diaper. I'm not holding any hopes out since I know that boys typically don't move out of the diaper stage this early. However, I'm not going to delay just to fit in with the norm. The problem is that I am having a power struggle with my husband and 17 year old daughter who feel that they know better than me. Does anyone have any advice? Please keep in mind that my daughter does not have any kids but bases her unwanted opinions on what she sees in relation to her younger cousins.

by shallenges

I hear all of you, we are potty training my son right now and Im pretty sure Im gonna go crazy! He has the hang of going pee in the potty but he refuses to go poo he will wait until nap time when he is in a pull up to go and when we catch him and put him on the potty he will stop, and he will go the moment we lay him down, underwear or not, it extremely exasperating! We are doing the simple reward system and so far it has worked for him going pee.

by Caymomma

how i got my daughter to potty train is i made a "potty chart" i did it weekly and everytime she used that potty she got a sticker and at the end of the week if the chart was filled she could go to the store like a dollar store ect. and pick out a prize it took a little while i also let her were underwear in the house even when she was not fully potty trained she had some accidents but they also realize that they dont like being wet and eventually learn that ohh man i have to pee and they run to the bathroom not always making it in time but its a messy learning process worked for me.

MIL is driving me crazy over fighting me about getting my son a toddler bed when we come to visit. My son is currently 21 mos and still in his crib, and sleeps in his pack and play when we go to visit my in-laws. However I'm due with baby #2 in July, and I will need the pack and play for the newborn. My MIL is INSISTING that she is getting my son a xl-twin size bed and just putting pillows around the floor, because that is what SHE DID with her oldest. My son will fall out of the bed, or better yet, refuse to sleep in it. I don't know how else to tell her I AM NOT putting my son in a full size bed ESPECIALLY without any side railings. She's insane. HELP!

by ickypetang79

HELP! This is not so much for my son but dealing with my parents (DGP) and husband (DH). I want to wean him off of the bottle, but I have DH and DGP who will not help me do it. They think that he won't get enough nutrition if he doesn't drink their "milkshakes". I on the other hand, want to get him use to being a big boy and eating real food. How do I convince them it is time to let go? Has anyone else run into this?

by LadyCheena

HELP!! My little girl (will be 2 next mo) had gone #1 and 2 on the potty a few times, it was a couple of months ago, but one day she was sitting on the potty and stood up - the poop started coming out so I kind of panicked "oh no you got to sit down on the potty" and I sat her back onto the potty soooo.... I don't know if I scared her or the poop did...well anyways, now she isn't interested in sitting on the potty unless her pants are on. Any advice?

Anyone out there who had to take a plane trip that lasted 8 hours? My 14 month old baby needs to be expanded in her crib or bed, otherwise she gets cranky! Help! anybody? tips? per pediatrician, I tried benedryl before but it did not seem to make her sleepy at all...

by LatinMom

jamesswyer, My husband to be, has a 3 1/2 year old! she does the same thing!!! exept she is up and down and wont stay in bed, at all, she screams and everything else, just like i did as a baby, my parents dont ever let me forget that. so they told me to do what they did.. it sounds mean and hateful, and kinda abusive, from a legal point of view, but no child can actually be harmed! we put her in bed, said it is bed time, and tucked her in, i love you good night, at 8pm, she screams, and cries, and wants this and that, to get out of bed! water mommy, and her grandmother everything! we tell her no, sometimes a loving spanking, but turn the lights off and demand bed time, eventualy she gets that at this time i go to bed!!! it will take a lot of time and a lot of screaming and gettin up to turn the light on or play in her room... you have to go in so many times and turn it off and put her or him back in bed! it sucks you feel awful and a terrible mom, but it really is the only way to be, it enforces displine, and your the boss not them! good luck!!!! :)

by Countrygirl0289

my 3 1/4 yr old fights bed time and repeatedly gets out of her bed . We have a set routine early in the evening but it seldom works.. 7:30 is bed time.. brush teeth, pee and bed with a story . lately she has been in and out of bed til as late as 10:30 pm.. i am most concerned that she isn't getting sufficient sleep as she is also an extremely early riser. Any tips for getting her down consistently at an appropriate time gratefully received.

My son is about to be three. I have the hardest time getting him to eat anything healthy. What can I do. I've gone to doctors and picky eating groups and nothing works.

my sons anger moments, kinda scare me for whats to come ! Today at the park , when i told him its time to go, he clinched his teeth, growled an awful sound, and stomped his foot ! This is about the fifth time i've seen him do this...is this what you'd call a "temper tantrum"? He turned two in January...

Anyone interested in an in-home daycare setting with a small group of 4 children? I am opening an in-home daycare March/April 2011, which is after I have my baby. I am taking new clients from March-May if you are interested. Currently, I am a first grade teacher, so educating children is very important to me. My hours would be flexible around the time you need Monday through Friday. I love to cook, so I would hand-prepare all meals. Things about me: I am a non-smoker. I have 2 dogs, but they will be in the upstairs of my house during business hours (they are good with children, but I want to make sure all parents are comfortable). I am on my second year of teaching, I have volunteered for Big Brothers Big Sisters, I have worked in daycares throughout my college education, I have tutored in a one-on-one setting, I have volunteered with 4-H children, I have interned with Big Brothers Big Sisters, and I babysit my nieces and nephews. I strongly believe in a strong curriculum for children so they are prepared for kindergarten and also a strong curriculum of teaching life skills. The children will have 2 snack times, breakfast, and lunch. I have a nice sized backyard for the children to play in and there is a playground in my subdivision. I believe exercise is very important. I am certified in CPR and first aid. I already have a background check completed through the school I am currently working at, but I will order another copy if needed. I am able to transport all children at one time in case of an emergency. Prices are very reasonable. My e-mail is mandy_wallick@yahoo.com if you are interested!

My son is almost 4 and I am beginning to show in my second pregnancy. We have already told him of course that is is going to be a big brother and at first he seemed very excited, however recently he has begun to use the bathroom in his pants and is not going to the toilet. I am worried that this could be due to my growing belly, please help! What do I do?

Little one won't keep diapers on? I had this issue with my daughter (oddly enough not my son and they're twins) and simply had to dress her in clothes she couldn't get off to get to her diaper. And yes, I actually resorted to taping over the closure tabs to keep her from getting her diaper off at night until I found sleepers that she couldn't get into...lol...she's outgrown it and we are on the threshold of potty training now that she's turned 2.
