Q&A: Who is at risk for preterm labor?

Who exactly is at risk for preterm labor?

Re: Who exactly is at risk for preterm labor?

The Bump Expert

Some women experience preterm labor without any warning or risk factors throughout their pregnancy, but there are definitely certain risk factors that can tip you off in advance. To start with, women who are expecting multiples (twins or more), often experience preterm labor. But other factors can include previous cervical or uterine surgery, previous pregnancy losses, smoking or drug use, high blood pressure or diabetes, or an infection or STD. Women who are over the age of 35 or overweight are more likely to go into labor early, as well. But regardless of whether or not one of these risk factors apply to you, I always say it's best to prepared no matter what your circumstance is, and create a plan for yourself -- just in case.

Q&A: Who is at risk for preterm labor?

I am over 35, overweight and was pregnant with twins. Although I went into preterm labor, my boys are very healthy, thankfully.
