Q&A: Not getining much weight during third trimester?

My weight gain seems to have really tapered off in the third trimester, but I’m just not hungry. Should I be worried?

Re: My weight gain seems to have really tapered off in the third trimester, but I’m just not hungry. Should I be worried?

The Bump Expert

Many women experience a shrinking appetite in the third trimester, mainly because there's just not much room left in the belly. But, healthy eating is essential right now -- the final months of pregnancy are dedicated to intensive fetal growth. In fact, most babies gain half their weight during this period. One way to get the nutrients you need without stuffing your already-full belly is by eating small meals and snacks throughout the day. Check with your doctor if you're seriously concerned, but as long as you’re on track to gain a healthy amount of weight, there's not much reason to worry.

Q&A: Not getining much weight during third trimester?

I gained a lot of weight at my last doctors appt, so I've been using www.mypyramid.gov to make sure that I'm eating the right things and that the baby is getting what he needs. they have a program specifically for pregnant women, and after you put in all your specs they will personalize a meal plan for you. I really like it-- it's really helped me.

Q&A: Not getining much weight during third trimester?

I'm 39 weeks and haven't gained any weight since 36 weeks (and I'm not complaining!). I am just not very hungrey. I eat the needed fruits, veggies, protein, dairy and a few carbs and literally have no room for anything.

Q&A: Not getining much weight during third trimester?

Well I'm 26 weeks and I havent gained one pound since I got pregnant. I'm just really not hungry. My doctor hasnt said anything about it. I guess it's okay since I was overweight to begin with and the babys growth is right on track

ejglady | June 10 , 2010 5:53 PM

Q&A: Not getining much weight during third trimester?

ejglady: if you start your pregnancy overweight, it isn't recommended for you to gain anymore weight (depending on how overweight you are). Good for you for keeping your weight on track. Most patients I see don't take the weight gain guidelines seriously and feel like pregnancy is their chance to gain weight, whether they are overweight or not. So don't worry about not gaining weight.

rmdemoss | June 20 , 2010 11:24 AM

Q&A: Not getining much weight during third trimester?

ejgladt: I'm not a Dr. but just because your overweight at the start of pregnancy doesn't mean you don't need to gain weight in pregnancy. You will need to gain less weight than those who start pregnancy smaller, but your growing baby needs nutrients and he/she can't get everything he/she needs from your fat stores. Not gaining anything in 26 weeks seems like not enough. If I were you I'd ask a Dr. or nutritionist how much you should be gaining per week for the rest of your pregnancy as the baby's nutritional needs increase.

Q&A: Not getining much weight during third trimester?

I am almost 33wks now and I have only gained 8lbs throughout this entire pregnancy so far... I was also a little overweight when i started, the doctors aren't concerned with this minimal weight gain during the pregnancy since being overweight they recommend you gain around 10 or 11lbs for the entire pregnancy....

Q&A: Not getining much weight during third trimester?

It's EJGLADY again... I'm now 32 weeks and I still haven't gained one pound. I've gone through all the testing my doc can preform and all is well. My LO is weighing in at over 4 pounds and neither of us are experiencing any complications. I think the reason I haven't gained anything is because my tastes have changed. I used to eat sweets and take out breakfast lunch and dinner but now the thought of brownies, oreos or icecream makes me sick. I'd much rather have a salad than a slice of cake.

Q&A: Not getining much weight during third trimester?

Okay, I wish I was in the same boat as many of you. I can't believe some of you haven't gained a pound!??? I'm 26 weeks pregnant and I've gained almost 25 pounds. 3 of those within the last week. Some weeks I don't gain as much, but then some weeks I see a huge jump on the scale. I'm trying to not be too worried, I took off 50 pounds right before I got pregnant and so I know what I need to do to get rid of it once the baby is born, but it's really hard to see that scale climbing up again from where I was. It's been tough to eat real healthy with all the ice cream and chocolate cravings I've been having. Any advice on subduing those cravings??

Q&A: Not getining much weight during third trimester?

I think it just depends for everyone. I'm about to start week 38 and have gained 29 lbs. I was a touch under-weight when I got pregnant, but my initial rate of gain was very slow until early in the 3rd trimester. Now it's tapered off again. As so many above have said, as long as your baby is healthy and progressing, it's okay.

Q&A: Not getining much weight during third trimester?

I am 26 weeks today and have gained about 35 lbs (give or take a few pounds). I gained about 13 lbs during month 4 and 5 lbs during month 5. I've been underweight to average weight my whole life so the weight gain has defintiely been difficult, but I know it will all be worth it and look forward to shedding the pounds after my baby is born! Anyone out there in the same boat as me??? or all you all not gaining weight! ;)

spetrocelli | September 01 , 2010 1:42 PM

Q&A: Not getining much weight during third trimester?

I am glad to hear I am not alone when it comes to concerns about not gaining weight. I have gained a total of 18 lbs so far throughout my pregnancy and I am 36 weeks tommorrow. I haven't gained a single pound in my entire 3rd trimester so far! I was worried and talked to my Dr. He said that the baby is healthy and growing normally and that just because you are not gaining weight does not mean your baby isn't gaining weight. Babies are like parasites, they take what they need from the food and nutrients you consume.

Harvestmoonbeams | September 02 , 2010 4:04 PM

Q&A: Not getining much weight during third trimester?

To spetrocelli: I'm glad to hear about someone just like me! I was underweight/ normal all my life until this (my 1st) pregnancy. It's now my 26th week and I've gained 35 pounds! My doc's a little concerned, but I was about 5 under to begin with. I HATE seeing myself like this, but I'm also a doctor, and I have little worries about losing the weight after birth. Good luck and have a healthy baby!

angelarussell | September 03 , 2010 7:48 PM

Q&A: Not getining much weight during third trimester?

I have gained 13 lbs and am at week 26. I am not overweight or underweight, and the doctors are very pleased with my weight gain. I am trying to shoot for the recommended 25 lb total gain. The person who said she was overweight to begin with and then had not gained much weight is not necessarily being unhealthy. Doctors do not expect someone overweight to gain as much as someone who is average and certainly not as much as someone who is underweight. They do not want you to put on an excessive amount though -- that's unhealthy. If you are eating healthy things and not binging then your weight should not be all over the place. If you've been sick or nauseous, then you may not be gaining as much.

Q&A: Not getining much weight during third trimester?

I wish my appetite would taper off a bit -- I´m hungry ALL the time! And when I try to wait to eat something in most cases baby goes bezerk until I eat or drink sth other than water!! I have gained a lot of weight, though roughly the same as my mum when she was pregnant and although my doctor is monitoring me she is not worried since I´m quite tall and my tummy is modest in size (my hips, however, are not *sniffsniff*) My mum reassured me as well by reminding me that the body will do what it needs to do. And since I´m a healthy eater + regularly go swimming and for waddles around the neighbourhood I try to not get too worked up about it. So coming back to the poster: if you know you´ve been eating the righ things and your baby is testing fine, then you´re good!

Q&A: Not getining much weight during third trimester?

I'm also 26 weeks today....and already gained 30lbs. I also started about 8 lbs. under my normal weight I'm 5'8" and started at 121 lbs. There seems to be a trend with many women that started off a little too skinny. I don't eat sugar , barely any carbs. But now watching the calories and cutting out raw almonds and avacado. I actually switched ob's because mine said if I'm not careful I might have to have a c section. Well my first pregnancy gained the exact same amount....daughter weighed 6 lbs. 7 oz. and delivered in 30 minutes. Not too worried but don't need the fear based dr. He told me to only eat protein and vegies the rest of my pregnancy and to not even eat fruit. I was really upset for a week....but I'm okay now.

Q&A: Not getining much weight during third trimester?

Well I wish I had the same no weight gain story. This is my 1st child and I'm 27 wks in 4 days and I started out overweight and til this day I've gain approximately 35 lbs. Yes, I am discouraged about that, but I have been walking. With less than 14wks to go, I pray entering my 3rd trimester my weight gain decreases with great measures. But my total weight loss goal is 75lbs that would put me at a good size. That will cover my baby weight and then some. Good luck ladies!!

Q&A: Not getining much weight during third trimester?

to you overweight mommies-to-be, i am one of you... i had to switch care in the middle of my pregnancy b/c i moved, but neither one of my doctors told me not to gain any weight... when i started out, i was 267lbs, and my OBGYN told me that she wanted me to gain 15-20lbs eventhough i was already overweight.. you have to gain weight for the baby to develop... i'm 38 weeks now... i had a very difficult pregnancy... i was very sick in my first trimester and ended up losing 23lbs from vomitting... i've been admitted into the hospital 3 times throughout the pregnancy for dehydration, so i'm actually under my starting weight as of right now... i started at 267 and i'm now 264... but people telling you that just b/c you're overweight means you shouldn't gain any weight is a total lie... and don't feel bad if you gain more than you should... as long as it's not effecting your health (blood sugar, blood presure, etc) or the baby's health, gain away... you can always throw that little one in his/her stroller when they get here and walk away that baby weight...

Q&A: Not getining much weight during third trimester?

I am 26 weeks today and have gained about 28 lbs so far (I don't really know what I weighed before I got pregnant, but I have always been a little underweight). I was worried becuase I gained a lot of my wieght at the very beginning but now my appetite just isn't as strong as it used to be, so I have to remind myself that I need to eat. My doctor is happy with my weight gain, so I guess I shouldn't worry so much. I will take a cue from ellisreinertsen and visit the mypyramid.gov website to tailor a meal plan just for me for the remainder of my pregnancy. I agree with pretty much everyone else on here, talk to your doctor if you are concerned.

Cupcake75 | January 07 , 2011 12:18 PM

Q&A: Not getining much weight during third trimester?

If your doctor is not worried then neither should you. I was 250 starting my pregnancy and lost 10 lbs over the first 20 weeks. I am 26 weeks today. At my check up on Tuesday I am weighing in at 243. The doc says the baby is developing perfectly and gaining the right amount of ounces for his justation and all my blood work is fine. She explained that your metabolism speeds up with pregnancy and with eating smaller meals more frequently (I haven't been able to eat a big meal at one sitting in over a month) that she is not surprised or worried. Also: all I crave is veggies and I still can't stand candy or sweets. Again: if your doctor is not worried then neither should you. They would mention concern if it was there. And each human body responds differently so to compare is impossible. Best of luck to everyone!

Q&A: Not getining much weight during third trimester?

When I found out I was pregnant at 4 weeks I was 122 lbs (5ft 2 in tall)by my next appt I was 119 lbs and stayed there until my appt at 25 weeks. I am finally back up to 122 lbs. the Dr. said that as long as the baby is developing properly not to worry about it. So I would assume that goes for any stage of the pregnancy.

Q&A: Not getining much weight during third trimester?

I am 37 weeks and have only gained 7 lbs. I did ask my Dr. about it because everyone was giving me grief over not gaining enough weight, and she said that I am healthy and they baby is growing and on track, so there is nothing to worry about.

Q&A: Not getining much weight during third trimester?

I think it all depends on your size before you were actually pregnant... not everyone is supposed to gain 30 pounds. Some are only recommended to gain 15 pounds. If you were heavier before pregnancy... you should be gaining much less.... if you were thin you are recommended to gain much more... like 30

Q&A: Not getining much weight during third trimester?

I was underweight for my height - 128 lb and 5'10", and I'm 26 weeks now weighing about 140 lb. So vie gained 13 lb. I feel good, baby is fine, and I failed the GTT one hour so i have to watch my carb intake. I think i eat too much fruit or somthing, since I only eat whole grains, no refined carbs or sugar and only healthy fats. I NEVER eat out. Just make everything you put in your mouth the best you can for your growing child, and it should be fine.

Q&A: Not getining much weight during third trimester?

Mothers and doctors often focus on weight gain (or loss, as the case may be), when in fact the concern should be on how much protein, calcium and essential vitamins you're getting. If you're getting 80-100 grams of protein a day, and eating whole foods, then you shouldn't worry. The mother's weight does not necessarily indicate the health of baby (as stories here attest).

Q&A: Not getining much weight during third trimester?

I am 26 weeks and have gained about 15 pounds. I'm 5'3" and started at around 105 so I suppose I am gaining what I should. My problem is that I don't want to eat anything that has protein. This was a struggle for me before too. I have to force down fish or chicken once a week and the only other things I can stomach are dairy, nuts, and eggs. I am eating healthy otherwise with a lot of fruits and vegetables so I am sure as long as you are eating good whole foods you are fine.

Q&A: Not getining much weight during third trimester?

I just left my 28 week appointment. I have gained 26 pounds. I was average weight before I got pregnant. I consider myself a pretty health eater (whole grains, organic and whole food whenever possible), but my doctor told me that if I didn't watch it, I'd probably have to have a c-section. I'm feeling really down right now.

Q&A: Not getining much weight during third trimester?

I am 26 weeks today and I've gained 20 pounds. I started at a normal weight but gained a little too much in the first trimester (fatigue made me a little lazy) but I'm right on track now gaining about 1 pound a week. I feel great and my baby girl is healthy and that's what's important!

Q&A: Not getining much weight during third trimester?

I am right at 38 weeks and I have gained 26lbs and I feel great about it, I am average height of 5' 6'' and average weight. Yes I joke around and compare myself to a baby water buffalo, but in all reality it's just weight. People lose and gain weight all the time, and I have no doubt I can lose it this pregnancy like I did in past pregnancies. At the end of the day health is all that matters, as long as you are eating right and exercising normally there is no need to worry :)

Q&A: Not getining much weight during third trimester?

I am 24 weeks and in the past week i have lost 3 pounds, its hard for me to eat I'm almost more nausious now then I was in the begining. I got sick a couple days ago and threw up (eww) and sinxce then its hard for me to eat :( I was 125 when I got prego and I am 140 now, so 15 pounds is normal for my size, but I do notice my clothes are a little less tight. kinda concerning. My sister is three weeks ahead of me and she looks super prego compared to me! I keep getting told im too small :( I have a 4 year old girl and this ones a boy, ive heard that boys carry lower, is this true? maybe thats why I still have a really small belly?

Q&A: Not getining much weight during third trimester?

I wish someone would explain to me how an overweight pregnant woman is supposed to avoid gaining weight. I am 26 weeks and I have gained about 7lbs, and it is a major stress in my life... and I feel hungry almost all the time. I try to eat healthy, and I am even counting my calories, and yet I can't see me making it to 40 weeks and not gaining more than 14lbs. I'm not supposed to diet, but I don't know what else to do. I have never been a fan of sweets, and pop has been cut out of my diet almost completely plus adding in spinach salads and fruit wherever I can, I know my diet is much healthier than before I got pregnant. But watching every morsel and counting every calorie and still seeing the scale go up is frustrating and heartbreaking.

Q&A: Not getining much weight during third trimester?

I am 26 weeks and have gained 32 lbs so far (mostly in the first trimester). I'm having a boy, carrying low and looking small for the amount of weight gain I've encountered. This is my first so I don't know what is normal for my body during pregnancy. I'm avg height of 5'6 and started around 140 lbs. My landscape job started at the beginning of my second trimester and I attribute about 10 lbs towards muscle mass as I have toned up in my arms and legs and even my ribcage area. Now the only bulge on me is my baby pot belly :) My little man is quite active and growing normally. My weight gain dropped a bit a couple weeks ago and now is climbing about 1 lb / week. I think I've plateau'd on my muscle mass and now the proper weight gain is showing through. I eat REALLY healthy during the week with lots of protein, calcium, fruits, veggies and whole grains but let myself cheat a tiny bit on weekends. My midwife is happy with me and everything is great :D

Q&A: Not getining much weight during third trimester?

with my first pregnancy I actually weighed less going into delivery than when I started... As long as your baby is growing and you are eating the right kinds of foods, with the occasional snack then it shouldn't be a problem, as long as your Dr is not concerned then you shouldn't be. If you are concerned then ask your Dr!! With this second pregnancy I lost weight in the beginning and am just know starting to gain, I've gained 8lbs but lost one on my last visit so in 25 weeks I've gained 7 lbs(which is mostly fluid and baby) , but the baby is even measuring ahead by a week, and I have a "2 vessel cord".

Q&A: Not getining much weight during third trimester?

I'm 26 weeks right now, and during my first trimester, I managed to lose 23.5 lbs. So far, I've gained 10.2 of those pounds back, but I've started to lose weight again. I was up to almost 15 pounds gained, but I just don't feel like eating right now. It makes me uncomfortable and nauseaous. I eat little things here and there, but I don't like the way I can't breathe after my meals. Hope y'all have better luck than I do. (My Dr doesn't seem to be concerned with this, so I guess I'm not either).

Q&A: Not getining much weight during third trimester?

kbgreg2 -- I wouldn't be OVERLY concerned with gaining a few pounds during pregnancy. Is your Dr telling you that you're not allowed to gain weight? During a normal pregnancy (according to "What to Expect When You're Expecting") an overweight girl should gain about 15 pounds. All that extra stress that you're putting on yourself to diet and watch the scale is putting stress on your baby, too. Don't forget that your little parasite can feel how you feel. Don't stress yourself out so much. Don't eat a lot of what you crave, but a little bite of chocolate cake or ice cream doesn't mean you're a bad mommy. It doesn't mean the end of the world, either. Just take your prenatals and stay moderately active. That's what my Dr told me (and I'm definately not a supermodel).

totallyinlove123 | July 29 , 2011 10:09 AM

Q&A: Not getining much weight during third trimester?

Depending on your pre-pregnancy weight and height you can determine how much weight you should gain. For most women of average weight I know 25 lbs is appropriate. I believe there is a tool on this website that will calculate it exactly for you, if not then I know there is one on http:///www.parents.com I have been underweight all my life so it was suggested I gain no more than 40 lbs. I could NEVER gain weight no matter how hard I tried so I was a little worried when I found out I was pregnant- I wanted my baby to be able to survive! It must've been all the raging pregnancy horomones because I am now 37 weeks and have easily gained 40 lbs!! It started out slow- at around 3 months I had only gained 5 lbs so I didn't think it was gonna happen for me but around the 5th month the weight started coming in. It doesn't bother me because I know its all for baby (well okay, the stretchmarks and cellulite bother me a little...lol). As for the previous poster being 26 weeks and gaining 45 lbs...that is dangerously high and you need to speak to your doctor about diabetes. A lot of women unknowingly develop diabetes during their pregnancy because of the rapid weight gain and like in your case, gaining too much. That can cause complications...and saying you gained 75 lbs during your first pregnancy is really alarming! Your doctor really needs to step in, and if he/she hasn't then you should change doctors, and eating habits, for your baby's health and safety.

I'm relieved i'm not the only one. I haven't gained any more weight in the past 5 weeks (I'm 32 weeks now). I'm not complaining about it, I was just nervous for my Peanut. Especially since everyone told me in the third trimester they gained the most weight.

I leveled off at 31 or 32 weeks, and my OB is very happy. I've gained about 30 lbs total throughout my pregnancy and she said that was just where I should be. She also said that you don't necessarily have to gain weight each visit, as long as you're eating healthy and the baby is fine at checkups.

Everything I read said that if you were overweight to begin with you should gain 15-20 lbs. I am at 29 weeks and have gained 5 lbs. I haven't been trying to keep it off or anything but I never experienced any excessive hunger or any cravings so I am really just eating the exact same amount as I did pre-pregnancy. My doctor doesn't seem concerned even though when I asked her about how much weight I should gain originally she said 20-25 lbs.

I am also 26wks today and I started at 218 but I am now at 208. Almost all the loss occurred in the first 16 weeks though. I wasn't sick all the time but I had such bad bloating in the first few months that I couldn't finish a meal and it wasn't moving along fast enough so even several little meals left me in pain. My doctor always assured me it was fine and the baby takes what he needs. The bloating let up at week 16 but they started me on the 17P shot this week and it has come back again.

Q&A: Not getining much weight during third trimester?

I am 28 weeks pregnant and I have gained 27 lbs. I started out at 150. My doctor said there was no real health risk it just all depended on how much weight I wanted to hold after I had the baby. I've started walking everyday to try to help my weight stay on track. My doctor also recommended that I gain 30-40 lbs throughout my whole pregnancy, so you figure a pound a week for the entire pregnancy.

Q&A: Not getining much weight during third trimester?

I am 34 weeks pregnant and the weight gain has only been 1 lb over the last two weeks. I am worried it is slowing down. However my doc was not concerned. I do prenatal water fitness and prenatal yoga. So i could be burning some fat, plus I try to eat enough fiber to keep my bowels regular. I think it could be because I relieved my bladder and bowels before my appt that is appeared like I didn't gain much. Who knows, maybe i wore lighter clothing and shoes today too. It all adds up.

Q&A: Not getining much weight during third trimester?

I am 26 weeks pregnant and I've only gained 10lbs. I started underweight and I still am, even though I gained a little. My doctor hasn't said anything and I don't know if I shoul bring it up on my next appt.

Q&A: Not getining much weight during third trimester?

I dont think you should be worried as long as you are seeing an OB at regular appts. I think if your doc is concerned they would let you know. I began my pregnancy 100 lbs overweight, for my last 3 appts I gained 6 lbs, then lost 2 then gained 1/2 lb. I have gained a total of 11 lbs so far this pregnancy and I have 12 weeks to go. My doc was not worried that I lost 2 lbs because he said it could be water weight, and everything else looks healthy. Listen to your own doc and dietician- they know you best and can advise you accordingly.
