How much extra weight will I gain if I quit smoking while pregnant?

Re: How much extra weight will I gain if I quit smoking while pregnant?

The Bump Expert

It’s impossible to say really. While it’s pretty common togain at least a little weight after quitting smoking in general, it doesn’thappen to everyone. Most women will gain about five pounds, since they nolonger have nicotine in their system to suppress their appetite or boost theirmetabolism. But now that you’re gaining weight for baby, there’s no way to knowfor sure how much of that is caused by the fact that you’re no longer smokingand how much of it you would have naturally gained anyway.

But besides all the obvious health benefits to kicking the habit, there’s one more upshot you can look forward to: Food will taste betterthan ever now. If you’re worried about packing on the pounds, though, just make sure to keep active, eat right, and not overdo it when it comes tosnacking or mealtime. You’ll not only keep your weight in check, but also helpcurb bloating, heartburn, or indigestion, which is always a plus.

I quit smoking the day I found out I was pregnant, Dec 17th and by the time the holidays were over I had gained 6lbs. But I haven't gained much since, maybe about 4 lbs if that.

Q&A: How much extra weight gained from quitting smoking while pregnant?

Hi Ladies! Quick question...how did you all quit when you found out you were pregnant? Cold turkey? If so, how hard was it for you? I recently found out that I am 9 weeks pregnant & am having a hard time quitting. I am not smoking anywhere near as much as I used to (2-3 a day), but I need to quit altogether, and fast! Any tips?

Q&A: How much extra weight gained from quitting smoking while pregnant?

I have been slowly lowering how much i smoke i went from almost 2 packs a day before i found out to 5 a day for a week and then 2 a day for a week and then 1 a day for a week. It helps break the habit (when you normally smoke) and lowers the nicotine slowly so its not such a sudden shock to your system. Another method is to take your daily amount and then cut half and inch of the bottom of your smokes for a week then the next week cut them in half and the week after that cut them down so there is only about half and inch left. It has been really hard but if you set your mind to it you can do it

Q&A: How much extra weight gained from quitting smoking while pregnant?

I quit when I found out and didn't gain any extra weight because of it. It only took me about a week to quit, so I basically quit cold turkey. I just kept telling myself that this was something very important for not only me but also for my baby and it helped alot.

Q&A: How much extra weight gained from quitting smoking while pregnant?

I quit cold turkey the day I took a test. I just got rid of my cigs and stopped buying them. It took about 2 months for the cravings to go away but they did. It was hard and I had major mood swings and headaches. I just keep thinking that its whats best for the baby. its not there fault I smoked. At work was the hardest. I just take food breaks now instead of smoke breaks :) good luck!

Q&A: How much extra weight gained from quitting smoking while pregnant?

Try reading the book "The Easy Way to Quit Smoking" by Alan Carr. I quit almost 3 years ago, & he tells you that the nicotene craving is the same as a hunger craving, which is why most people gain weight. It's hard to differentiate the 2 so you wind up eating more. My DH also quit about 2 1/2 yrs ago using the same book, & we haven't had the urge to start again. FYI: the author died of lung cancer from 2nd hand smoke from his patients who he didn't force to quit while in his office.

I was smoking the same amount, even though it was making me sick, until the first ultrasound. The realization hit me and that was enough for me.

Q&A: How much extra weight gained from quitting smoking while pregnant?

I quit the day we the positive result came back. On my own, I wouldn't have been able to quit cold turkey, but I kept telling myself it was for the baby. I would be devestated to know that my baby might not be healthy because of a selfish habit I was choosing to do. I couldn't handle the fact that I might be harming my baby... so I was done that day. It was hard, don't get me wrong, but I used that as a reminder every time I wanted to smoke. Also, I reminded myself that I would never really quit if I just slowly cut back, I just needed to make the decision to be done. I have gained maybe 6 lbs at 11 weeks, so not bad.

Q&A: How much extra weight gained from quitting smoking while pregnant?

The biggest help to me when I quit was to get away from people while they smoke. My husband goes into the other room and doesn't smoke in the car... I wont pick up any while i'm out for anyone. I don't even go near the ciggerette counter when i can avoid it. I was able to quit when I found out but it was hard. Good luck. It really is best! Oh, and I feel much better now too! (although I still try to stay away from scales)

Q&A: How much extra weight gained from quitting smoking while pregnant?

I smoked for 22 years (I started really young). This is my second pregnancy. Both pregnancies, I quit cold turkey as soon as I found out I was pregnant. I lost the first pregnancy, and was so devastated I weakened and started smoking again, so I had to quit all over again the second time around. The best visual for me to not give in to my cravings was to imagine holding my baby in my arms and blowing smoke directly into her face. It's an absolutely awful thought, and was enough for me to put down the cigs.

Q&A: How much extra weight gained from quitting smoking while pregnant?

Once I found out I was pregnant, I went from smoking a pack a day, to one a day, then I would only take a couple of hits from my Husbands cigarette when he smoked once or twice a day. I have gained about 7lbs and am only 7 1/2 weeks....its probably going to happen, but its worth it.

Q&A: How much extra weight gained from quitting smoking while pregnant?

I weaned down over about 2 weeks when I found out I was pregant. Another thing that really helped was while I was weaning, I didn't allow myself to smoke immediately after meals or in the car (those where the two times I wanted them most). By doing this, I eliminated my association between cigarettes and the car, and cigarettes after a meal, so when I did quit altogether, those normal trigger times weren't as bad. Each day gets easier. I'm not going to lie, it was hard! But 5 months later, most days I don't think about it. It also helped tremendously that I made my husband quit too. He took a lot longer than I did, but I give him major credit for quitting before the baby is born.

Q&A: How much extra weight gained from quitting smoking while pregnant?

From the day I took the at-home pregnancy test to the day I met with my doctor to confirm was a total of one week. I smoked a few cigarettes during that week and quit cold turkey after I left the doctor's office. I had been smoking for over 15 years and never could seem to (or want to) quit, but somehow I just quit once I got the confirmation I was pregnant. I didn't gain any additional weight than I would have if I hadn't quit smoking (I'm 36 weeks pregnant and have gained a total of 26 lbs). Good luck!

Q&A: How much extra weight gained from quitting smoking while pregnant?

I quit about 2-3 days after I took the at home test. It was pretty easy to quit, but I am 37 weeks and still have cravings everyday. I'm sure that I have gained some additional weight because now I eat instead of smoke. I have gained about 40 pounds, which I did with my DD too, but lost it all pretty quickly after she was born. Maybe because I started smoking again, who knows...

Q&A: How much extra weight gained from quitting smoking while pregnant?

I was diagnoised with PE which is blood clots in your lungs when I was 5 weeks pregnant, due to pregnancy and smoking. Please stop immediently. Not only was I affecting my unborn child I almost died as a result of smoking while pregnant. Your blood clots differently and with smoking your cutting off vital oxygen to your baby and your bloodstream. I now have to take a very painful blood thinner( Lovenox) shots in my belly every day until after I have my baby. It's just not worth it.
