Dealing with heartburn during pregnancy?

Though morning sickness seems to get all the hype, many women find heartburn just as unpleasant a pregnancy symptom. In early pregnancy, heartburn is caused by the hormone progesterone, which relaxes the uterine muscles to fit your growing baby. Unfortunately, this hormone also relaxes the valve between the esophagus and stomach, allowing acid to bubble up from your gut and burn your esophageal lining. In the final months of pregnancy, the baby squashes your digestive organs and causes the same result.

Reduce the risk and severity of heartburn by avoiding triggers like chocolate, coffee, tea, citrus, tomato sauces, spicy stuff and fried foods. It also helps to sleep with your head slightly elevated, and to consume minimal fluids with meals (just be sure to drink plenty of water an hour before and an hour after meals so you don’t get dehydrated). Unfortunately, no matter what you do, you’ll probably still feel the burn sometimes. Talk to your OB about what meds you can safely take for relief (she will probably recommend an antacid like Tums, or even something stronger for especially severe pain).

Q&A: Heartburn during pregnancy?

My doctor suggested I take Zantac 150 mg 2x a day. My heartburn has gotten much better since I took his advice. I take Tums in the meantime if I get hb after a meal or wake up in the middle of the night. My hb has always been horrible; even before pregnancy. But pregnancy made it worse. I've even woken up choking on stomach acid. Anyway, Zantac works pretty well.

When its really bad, and Tums or Mylanta don't work...mix some apple cider vinager with a little water and do a shot or two of that. IT WORKS!! Also, chew some gum..the salvia the gum produces will help combat the acid too.

Q&A: Heartburn during pregnancy?

I was taking antacids every day in the evening until I had my last check up. My doctor told me to take small sips of milk, a natural antacid, throughout the day. Instead of drinking a whole glass at a time, work on 1/4 glass at a time. Now, when I feel my heartburn start, I just grab a little milk and take a few sips! I feel so much better!

My Dr. told me I could take Prilosec because Zantac and Pepcid were not helping. It saved my life! Not a sign of HB since!

Q&A: Heartburn during pregnancy?

I've been having heartburn since I was 5 months and nothing every worked until I spoke to my sister. It may sound quite gross but it has actually worked for me. I drink cup after cup of yoo-hoo (chocolate milk) and eat pickles at the same time.It gives me at least an hour of relief most of the time. It may come back later but it is a good remedy for the time being.

Q&A: Heartburn during pregnancy?

i've been doing Prilosec twice a day..but my savior is definately milk...we always have to have milk in the house otherwise i'd die! I wake up like 4-5 times due to the acid and just go get a little glass of milk and puts me right back to sleep (besides the back pain) lol

Q&A: Heartburn during pregnancy?

I've tried natural remedies and then turned to Tums which just weren't cutting it for me, so I've been taking Zantac as well. But the GOOD NEWS about all this heartburn is supposedly your baby will be born w/ a full head of hair! I'm banking on it and I already bought the most adorable barrettes!

Q&A: Heartburn during pregnancy?

I didnt start getting heartburn until about a week ago and im at 30 weeks now. My dr has suggested Tums and since I have started taking them the heartburn has been better. She told me to take them every couple of hours whether I have heartburn or not that way it will help keep it down. The weird thing is that I get heartburn all the time...I dont have to do anything...it just pops up, lol.

Q&A: Heartburn during pregnancy?

I drink a 24oz bottle of water with a little more than a Tbsp of lemon juice in it everyday. If I skip it I get really nasty heartburn, but if I don't I have absolutely no heartburn at all!!!

Q&A: Heartburn during pregnancy?

my heartburn has been very frustrating as well since it doesn't seem to be triggered by any specific type of food and occurs a few hours after EVERY meal, yet is definitely worse when my stomach is more empty. i have found myself waking up a few hours after finally falling asleep with unbearable heartburn (timing works well with my first trip to the bathroom of the night, ironically). Tums work but I felt like I was eating a LOT of them, so my midwife suggested Pepcid... it has been wonderful!!!!

Q&A: Heartburn during pregnancy?

During my first pregnancy Tums and Pepcid worked well, however those haven't been strong enough during my current pregnancy so I've switched to Prevacid, it works wonders. All of the abovementioned were approved by my Doctor.

Q&A: Heartburn during pregnancy?

I'm 27 weeks and have been experiencing heartburn for a couple of weeks now and it continues to get worse, the bigger my tummy gets! My Dr told me to take Tums or Mylanta, and they both seem to help. Milk also does the trick, and my fave is a little bit of ice cream. It's cold and feels really good to my throat and the milk in it helps neutralize the stomach acids. Also, I stay sitting upright for at least a couple hours after I eat.

Q&A: Heartburn during pregnancy?

Tums have been my savior - I keep them stashed all over my house and office - but when it's really bad I have a bit of ice cream! It's cold and the dairy is soothing!

Q&A: Heartburn during pregnancy?

I have had terrible heartburn and acid reflux while i am sleeping my entire pregnancy, when i became immune to tums the doctor told me to take zantac 150mg 2x daily... In between i chew tums here and there but when i wake up in the middle of the night i deff rely on small glasses of milk.

Q&A: Heartburn during pregnancy?

i started using tums and they didn't really work for me, so i did some research. one teaspoon of apple cider vinegar with a mug full of hot water and honey to taste before bed has done the trick for me! and not to mention that apple cider vinegar is supposed to be super good for you and baby!

Q&A: Heartburn during pregnancy?

I have struggled with heartburn for many years due to a hiatal hernia. My tips: 1. Gum is ok as long as it's not mint, since mint relaxes the sphincter and allows more acid through 2. Apple Cider Vinegar - I second that! 3. My midwife recommended alfalfa tablets, which I have not yet tried 4. Thayers Slippery Elm tablets are great to tote in my purse and I just suck on one until it dissolves completely (cherry is best flavor, I think) 5. Tums and Baking Soda are actually not good for you, as they can aggravate the problem 6. Propping the head of the bed on blocks is good Good luck all :)

Q&A: Heartburn during pregnancy?

Mine has been so horrible it makes me nauseous and I'll throw-up after meals, especially dinner. My Dr. put me on Ceflate 4x's a day plus prilosec and zantac. It helps but I really have to watch what I eat and eat smaller meals. I drink a lot of milk through out the day and chew gum. I'll have to try the vinegar and honey!

Q&A: Heartburn during pregnancy?

In my first trimester, I developed awful gastric refux and that gnawing sensation that constantly makes you feel like you are hungry. Now in my third, it has returned although thankfully not as intense as it was. I agree, Tums did not help much for me either. I tried soft chew Rolaids and they help, as well as chewing gum.

Q&A: Heartburn during pregnancy?

I have suffered with this my entire pregnancy - I mentioned it to my Perinatal MD and he said that I try a very bland evening diet to reduce the symptoms. He specifically recommended that I try a diet of rice, bananas, toast, mashed potatoes or applesauce. I tried the rice first and it worked wonders. Just 1/2 cup of ordinary rice - nothing added and heartburn stayed away all night! Warning - I tried bananas the second night - didn't work and didn't stay down....back to the rice.

Q&A: Heartburn during pregnancy?

It probably works similarly to the cider vinegar and honey, but a after months of horrible heartburn, a friend told me about eating Granny Smith Apples. I eat two or three a day (usually one with lunch, one mid-afternoon, and one early evening) and I have not had a problem with heartburn since. There definitely IS something to this whole "apple a day" philosophy...

Q&A: Heartburn during pregnancy?

I had heartburn my entire pregnancy that would wake me up in the night and cause me to vomit stomach acid. I mentioned it to my doc and was told to take tums. But towards the end of my pregnancy it was an every night thing and my doc said I could take zantac. It works so well. I feel like a new person. I cant eat and sleep again.

Q&A: Heartburn during pregnancy?

I live in Germany and the doctors here are very hesitant to prescribe anything for a pregnant woman. They've even told me to avoid Tums and gave me a referral to a homeopath. She recommended chewing 4-5 almonds whenever I have heartburn and it works!! It neutralizes the acid!!

Q&A: Heartburn during pregnancy?

Peppermint tea and papaya enzymes. Peppermint tea helps with digestion in general. Papaya enzymes (I've found them at Fred Meyer in the vitamin section) are tablets somewhat like Tums, but better for Baby if you're taking them on a daily basis. For some people they work, some people they don't, but they sure help me out a ton!

Q&A: Heartburn during pregnancy?

Hello, I found this out completely by accident. I had terrible heartburn and was eating tums like lifesavers. I went on a trip to Mexico and stayed with a family who fed me fresh papaya every day for breakfast. Once I returned home I read that papaya could stave off heartburn. It didn't occur to me but the entire time I was in Mexico, with all the mexican food that I ate, I never got heartburn. So I began loading up on fresh papaya and it was a lifesaver the rest of my pregnancy! :-) Hope this helps.

Q&A: Heartburn during pregnancy?

Zantac does work miracles! I take it before bed time because that is when I waking up miserable and looking for Tums. But Tums can cause kindey stones if you take too many! I also find for temporary relief, that milk can be effective.

Q&A: Heartburn during pregnancy?

If you're wanting the more natural route - I'd stay away from even Tums. Occasional is fine, but not if you're popping them every day or a few times a day! Almonds, or Papaya Enzymes (tastes almost like Flintstones Vitamins) work awesome and are much better for you and baby!

Q&A: Heartburn during pregnancy?

For a more natural approach - I have been eating a few slices of green apple, even the smallest amount will make your heartburn go away almost instantly, and it lasts! My husband hates green apples but will endure them to relieve his heartburn as well. A little cucumber works if you do not have apples Handy, but not as well!

Q&A: Heartburn during pregnancy?

I have had pretty terrible heartburn since being 5 months pregnant (im 7 now). Anything dairy seriously helps! Also- I always have a bowl of cereal and milk first thing when i wake up. If i don't do that-then i have awful heartburn all morning. Ice cream is my favorite dairy item to have to help the heartburn! I also have a generic brand heartburn med that I take if it the symtpoms are worse than usual, but I try to avoid taking that too often.

Q&A: Heartburn during pregnancy?

a glass of milk has always helped me, my nana told me about it when i was pregnant with my first and it helps even when you're not pregnant, so when i wake up at night from heartburn i just go grab a glass of milk and i'm fine, it also helps if you wake up in the middle of the night from hunger, just enough protein for your stomach to digest until it's time for breakfast ^_^

Q&A: Heartburn during pregnancy?

I have had heartburn this entire pregnancy as well, and my doctor told me I could take Pepcid, so I have taken it just about every day. Aside from that, I take Tums like they are going out of style! I seriously think I had about 20 yesterday! And even if I try to eat bland and boring food, it doesn't help; so long as I have ANY food in my stomach, the acid and heartburn kick in. I have heard that milk helps, but milk makes me sick lately, so I cannot drink it. I don't know how I could get through this pregnancy without Pepcid and Tums!

icethistle |

Q&A: Heartburn during pregnancy?

Wow some of these "remedies" sound like they'd do the opposite to me! Pickles are strong and I'd think they'd cause heartburn. I only take a Tums if its unbearable, usually when it wakes me up at 5am. Not eating at least 2 hours before bed helps, cut out the triggering foods helps, and I agree that milk helps. Sometimes if I have a smal glass of milk with like 2 cookies a couple hours before bed, I sleep hearburn free. I usually take one Tums about an hour before bed now just to keep it at bay. Waking up to pee through the night is annoying enough!

I have acid reflux (dx before pregnancy) & my doc suggested Zantac150 over the counter one in the morning & one 1/2 hour before bedtime. This worked for me. I would take even on days I didn't have heartburn because as I soon learned it's better to take it & not need it than need it & not have taken it. Q&A: Heartburn during pregnancy?

I was on pepcid twice a day and it helped at first, but then my heartburn got so bad that I thought I had gallstones or a problem with my liver or one of my organs, lol. My heartburn was so severe the doc put me on Nexium 40mg a day. Nexium DEFINITELY does the trick, but causes constipation, which is still better than the pain I was having! Oh and AVOID TUMS! Taking too many causes kidney stones and TRUST ME! You would much rather have excruciating heartburn than a kidney stone my friends!

Mollygirl1 |

Q&A: Heartburn during pregnancy?

My doctor put me on 40 mg of Protonix. Works WONDERS. Down side is that it takes a few weeks to build up in your system and work. You can also take Tums with it. (I forgot to take it last night, and my HB today is KILLER!) Wouldn't have survived if it weren't for Tums, since I can't drink milk (lactose intolerant). Good luck ladies :)

Q&A: Heartburn during pregnancy?

Tums seem to me to be the safest of the medicines to take. However, I don't want to pop them 24/7. I get relief between meals by eating a few almonds. Obviously some people are too sensitive to almonds to get relief. But I think they work great and are another way to get good fats and minerals into your diet. Moderation is key - no more than a handful.

Papaya Enzyme tablets work for me. Also eating fresh papaya (if you can find it). It is a safe and natural alternative to meds that really works. You can find the tablets at health food stores or Whole Foods.

Take chewable papaya extract tablets after meals!! These are amazing. They work within minutes to take away heartburn plus they aide in digestion. They taste yummy too so it's like an after meal mint too. You can get these at your local natural food store. Too many tums can inhibit iron absorption and are not recommended for daily use over a period of time.

Q&A: Heartburn during pregnancy?

I had mild heartburn during the first trimester and it mostly subsided during the second, but the third has been unbearable. When I finally fall asleep at night (propped up on pillows) I throw up and wake up choking on the vomit. All night long it repeats. The dr wrote me a script for pronto nix which reduces the amount of acid you produce. It has helped considerably, but I still need tums usually once a night and Pepcid occasionally. What really helped is no solid food 6 hours before bed, just a protein shake. Hang in there ladies!
