Q&A: Emotions during pregnancy?

I'm pregnant with my first baby, and I'm super emotional! I know that being hormonal is part of pregnancy, but how do I know what's normal and what isn't?

The Bump Expert

Every pregnancy is different, but you're right that (unfortunately) being emotional is often a big part of pregnancy. Your body is going through some pretty crazy changes, and it can be especially trying during the first trimester when you're just getting used to the transformation.

While mood swings during pregnancy can be traced to everything from fatigue, physical stress and metabolic changes, the main culprit is your hormones. During the first few months after conception, the levels of hormones like estrogen and progesterone change dramatically, which has significant effect on brain chemistry. So if you find yourself spontaneously bursting into tears or breaking into a laughing fit, don't worry -- you're pregnant, not crazy.

For most women, the moodiness is most noticeable in the first few months of pregnancy and the last weeks leading up to delivery. If yours seem extreme or are affecting your way of life, talk with your doc. She'll be able to guide you towards further care.

Thank you for that advice. I thought I was crazy for crying for no reason!

I mean one minute, I am so happy with life and admiring the flowers.... and then I am crying over a commercial, or yelling at my husband for him just walking into a room, just because he is trying to hug me! re: Q: Normal emotions?

I got upset with my husband for something silly and before I knew it I was yelling about it. Once I registered the look in his face, I realized how I was acting and felt so bad about it, I started crying. He did not know what to do! You are definitely NOT alone!

re: Q: Normal emotions?

I totally cried for an hour last night... no real reason behind it. Just all of a sudden overwhelmed by being happy, scared, thrilled, etc. Ours is a "honeymoon baby" -- I definitely wasn't expecting to EXPECT already! My hubby was great, telling me he has the same excitement, happiness, scared-ness, too. Pretty sure it won't be the last crying jag I have! I kind of feel on the brink of it a lot this past week.

Q&A: Emotions during pregnancy?

Mmm...that's a good question but if your emotions get in the way of functioning successfully it might be good to talk to someone.

we have a little over 5 weeks left and i have been super super moody / emotional. people keep telling me i am going to deliver my little guy early based on how totally moody i am. lets hope he stays in there long enough for him to be healthy! Its nice to know that there are others out there suffering the mood bug as makes one feel a little less guilty!

Q&A: Emotions during pregnancy?

I'm due in four weeks and for the at least the last week I've been an unapologetic *itch. I've even taken to sleeping on the couch just so I can get some sleep because my BF is so touchy feely it drives me nuts, especially since I'm in so much discomfort/pain. He wakes me up just when I'm finally dozing with his need to cuddle (which amounts to him wrapping himself around me) or rub and leaves me cranky for the rest of the day. In a way I feel bad for him, but then I don't. He's been a pain in the butt my whole pregnancy.

Q&A: Emotions during pregnancy?

The other day I was chewing my nails and my SO grabbed my hand so I wouldn't, and it usually irritates me. But it irritated me a lot more. Also to mention, his friend just died, so I blew up, and then he blew up. Lasted about half an hour.. Was late to work. He forgave me and said it was ok and I told him I felt terrible because I wasn't there for him and everything when he needed me.. I'm just hoping it's part of the pregnancy.. Because I never want to see that look on his face again.. It's absolutely heartbreaking

Q&A: Emotions during pregnancy?

This is my first pregnancy and i am so moody. I will get upset, frustrated, jealous, or sad in a sudden burst and start crying. Like today my husband was just kidding when he said that he ran into one of my friends at the store, but wouldn't tell me. I got so mad that he didn't tell me that I ended up not saying much to him which made him get silent. I then felt so bad and terrible that I made such a huge deal about nothing. OMG I hate this feeling. Any advice to help deal with these emotions?

This is my first pregnancy and I am so emotional! I cry and get upset over everything and find myself taking it out on my partner. I don't know if what I am experiencing is normal a pregnancy hormonal imbalance, or if I am experiencing depression. I am not in a great financial situation and moved across the country (from TN to CA) and am constantly missing my support from my family. I am a nervous wreck constantly worrying about my unborn son and that I will be able to adequately provide for him.
