I’m 30 weeks pregnant with my first baby and was just put on bed rest due to an irritable uterus. I’m going crazy -- both from worry and from boredom! What can I do?

The Bump Expert

As if pregnancy isn’t enough of an emotional roller coaster -- now this! You can do it, but it’ll be a whole lot easier with some help.

First, the logistics. Decide where to going to be spending your days (your bed? the couch?), and have your partner, mom, or friend set up a cozy, full-service nest for you. Stock it with a phone, plenty of reading material, paper and pencil, a TV with remote, lots of drinks and snacks (get a cooler for the perishable stuff) and maybe even a laptop with Internet access. (Yay for wireless!) Ideally, your husband will check your supplies every morning before he leaves to make sure you have everything you need at arm’s reach.

Next, your emotions. Again, try to find some support. It’s natural to worry and feel angry when pregnancy doesn’t go according to plan. Share your feelings with your mate, midwife, or a trusted friend. You might also find it helpful to connect with other moms-to-be in the same predicament -- look for them on our message boards.

Q&A: Bored with bed rest?

I too am 30 weeks pregnant and have been on bed rest for 10 weeks (10 to go!) for an incompetent cervix/cerclage. It is so frustrating so allow yourself to feel that way without feeling guilty! I have found having a laptop to be a godsend, since there is only so much daytime tv to watch! I've also been making lots of lists for my hubby to do (baby-related) and getting things lined up, such as a pediatrician, nursery items, birth plans, etc... If you are crafty, you can do what I've done, and I'm working on a needlepoint stocking for my lil guy. I have all the time in the world so I hope to have it done by Christmas. There are plenty of baby books to read- either online or have a friend check them out from the library for you. You will get bored... my hubby has put up with a few crying fits from me. And, you will hear people talk about how they wish they were on bed rest, thinking it's a vacation. It's not an easy time, but thinking about your baby will help to ease the stress. Good luck!! Q&A: Bored with bed rest?

Hello my fellow bed resters, I myself have been on bedrest for the past 4 weeks. I am currently 28 weeks. I will be on bed rest for the remainer of the pregnancy. :( I am already 2cm dialated and having contractions so they are hoping that I can make it to 34 weeks. It's very depressing people think that being on bed rest is not that bad. Needless to say it' WAY OVER RATED! It''s only good for the first 2 days then it sucks after that. I know that it will all be worth it in the end but right now....... :(

Q&A: Bored with bed rest?

Hello Ladies...today marks the beginning of week 28 for me and day 4 of bedrest at the hospital. Theres is no question that is absolutely sucks!! I realize it's neccessary for me and the baby right now ( i am 2 cm dialated and the membrane is weeping) but I am not having any contractions, bleeding or pain...nothing like that. Like daysha25k, I would have to assume that they are trying to get me to 34 weeks with no cervical change although I still do not know what they have in store for me. I do know that they are keeping me in the hospital for at least another 4 days which is the most frustrating part. I pretty much feel like I could be doing the same thing at home, only with a bit more comfort and at least the option of an open window for some fresh air. I am starting to lose my mind from not being able to enjoy the outdoor air & surroundings. I know it will all seem petty in the end when my little guy is born but right now, it's simply a nuisance.

Q&A: Bored with bed rest?

Hello Ladies, This is my second week in the hospital and the beginning of my 27 week. I'm having heart problems, which are affecting the baby so I have to be here till Lucy's born. It's going to be a long summer. I'm doing a scrapbook for her so that takes up some time. Also I do sudokus, word searches, and cross words. You can't help but feel depressed and I sometimes blame my boyfriend for all of this, but stay positive and focus on the goal that beautiful baby.

Q&A: Bored with bed rest?

I am on day 2 of bed rest & already feeling like I am going to go crazy. I am 30 weeks. I saw the doctor yesterday & he immediately said you are on bed rest & are not allowed to get up. I was wheeled out of the doctor office in a wheel chair because of it. It was embarrassing to say the least but I know it is good for the baby. We have already been through so much with this pregnancy that I am just happy to have made it this far along. I have a cervix that is shortening & dilating before it should be. My doc has already said he is going to start steroids to help with the baby development since he fears he will be here in about 4 weeks.

Q&A: Bored with bed rest?

I am 33 weeks and I have been on bedrest since i was 26 weeks. Talk about pure-d-boredom!!!!!!! I was hospitalized for premature labor and contractions and bleeding so I understand the severity but GOSH!!!!!! And to add insult to injury I am a teacher so I won't be going anywhere anytime soon :( I was given steroid shots and I'm currently on contraction meds to stop them but my doctor and I fear she's on her way (due date is not until 9/15). I know it sounds crazy but ladies we have got to stay still and think about our little princesses and prince's and then complain to them when they're older ;) Best of luck to you all!

Q&A: Bored with bed rest?

I am 33 weeks today and have been on bedrest since 29 weeks due to my cervix being 50% effaced, and I am carrying twin boys. Bedrest sucks, but it is totally worth it b/c I have been able to carry my babies 4 weeks longer than if I hadn't been on it, and my doc is hopeful that I can make it to my scheduled c-section at 38 weeks. Having access to the computer has been a Godsend, and I have also spent a lot of my time reading and working on the scrapbook for the boys. My husband is in the military and currently deployed, so I have to rely on my parents for a lot of help and support. Good luck to everyone, and hang in there :)

I am 12 weeks and today is my first official day of bedrest. I had a cerclage put in yesterday for my incompetent cervix. I have 6 more months of bedrest can you give me some ideas to spend my time wisely lol.

Q&A: Bored with bed rest?

,I've been on bedrest since week 18 and am now 23 weeks thanks to my incompetent cervix. Some days are good and some days are not, but it's all towards creating this beautiful baby. @rdmstar7- I strongly encourage you to set a routine for your days. If you are allowed, shower or bathe right when you wake up, and try to keep some structure to your time. Also, set something special to do for each day of the week; ie: if you enjoy (and can afford) shopping online, shop on Mondays only. Your packages will likely come later in the week so you have something to look forward to, but limiting your buying day to once a week helps prevent boredom purchasing. Also, there isn't too much you can do on your back/side, but needlepoint and cross stitch are possible (check out sublimestitching.com). I just started this and it is just engaging enough to prevent tears of boredom, and just mindless enough to help your mushy pregnancy brain. I wish us all luck-this is really one of the toughest things I've ever had to endure!

Q&A: Bored with bed rest?

Hi my fellow bedresters. I am currently 30 weeks pregnant and was placed on bedrest at 22 weeks for a "short" cervix and bleeding. Needless to say the past 8 weeks have been an emotional rollercoaster but my baby is healthy and still cooking-which is all that matters! My best advise is to set a routine-get up around the same time every morning and try to get to sleep at the same time each night. I keep myself busy with TV, movies (NETFLIX), reading, internet (stumbleupon.com), facebook, online shopping and my online nursery registry (I have researched every baby product on the market), I have created some photo albums on Kodak.com and put together an updated phone and address book. Family is in and out of my house 2 times a day-helping with my dog, cleaning, cooking etc. (I am so blessed to have such a great supportive fam). I have my birth announcements picked out and all my shower thank yous addressed. I send free ecards to friends and family for silly things-just to stay connected (its fun to brighten someones day from the couch). Hang in there-I know how difficult it is and how cheated you feel of your pregnancy. It will all be worth it in the end when you hold your bundle of joy.

Q&A: Bored with bed rest?

I am on bedrest too. I had to start bedrest as soon as I found out I was pregnant! I lost my first baby due at 21 weeks to an incompetent cervix, so I am a nervous wreck! I have been on bed rest for 7 weeks already and am only 11 weeks! Ahhh going crazy! My husband is military too thank god he is not overseas. We live far away from family so they can't help out any, which is very hard! So everything is left up to my poor husband, I feel so bad. i have my good and bad days too feeling better since I'm almost out of my first trimester. For those of you who have had cerclages, I am going to have to have one and am very nervous about the pain issue. Any info on having the procedure would be nice!

Q&A: Bored with bed rest?

i too am on bedrest have been since the end of november! i am now 32 weeks along, will be 33 weeks on thursday. I had to also get the steriod shots over christmas break. that was not fun. despite bedrest i am still walking around in the mornings getting my kids ready for school, kinda hard to do bedrest when you have a 5 and 4 year old that go to school everyday. we tried to adjust my husbands hours but failed. he's in the marines and is a recruiter, even with medical documents the boss doens't care. he thinks i'm fine and there's medication out there to fix a funneling cervix! yea his boss is a tad bit insane. so after they leave for school i get breakfast and sit on the couch or lay down for the rest of the day until my parents can get here at 3:30 in the afternon to get them off the bus and make us all dinner and put them to bed. i think i'll make it a lot longer despite the cramping i've been having. ijust underwent tons of stress, watched my whole house flood, our pipes burst in the bathroom and my 5 yr olds bedroom, ruined so much. so base housing moved us to a new house, so we endured a move in one day flat last week! it was insane. but i'm still cooking this baby! each week means another pound, last week i was estimated at 4lb 4oz. so that was great news.

I'm also at 30 weeks and just got home from being in the hospital since my 28th week. Other than the obvious: playing on the internet, registering online, opening mail, etc. My only new idea so far is to send out thank you notes to everyone who has really gone above and beyond to help me.

Q&A: Bored with bed rest?

I am just today at 20 weeks with twins and have been put on bed rest probably for the rest of pregnancy. My cervix is opening and shortening and they also think that we have twin to twin transfusion where one baby grows and the other doesn't. We go to see a perinatologist early next week but my regular OB says probably I am on bedrest the rest of the time!! i will do whatever I have to to keep my babies in there and cooking but man its going to be a long time on the couch/in bed! I'm not very good at holding still so i have going to have to find some hobbies!

Q&A: Bored with bed rest?

I am 34 weeks and was put on bed rest 2 days ago after going into preterm labor. I'll be on bed rest for a total of 3 weeks. I really sympathize for all of you women, especially those who have been on bed rest for a long time or will be. I am a pretty active person and am already having a hard time with this. I try to keep focusing on the fact that I'm extremely lucky that my baby girl is ok and it could've been a lot worse. Do any of you have any polite and creative responses to family/friends who keep saying to enjoy the bed rest or 'vacation' since you wont be getting any rest since the baby is born???

Q&A: Bored with bed rest?

It s so easy for others to say something simple lik "you shud enjoy this time" or "u better enjoy it while it lasts" ppl are so quick to give cheap and easy advice, so i like to watch them sweat or work hard to answer what i shud do to reach that goal for example: ppl luv to say "just relax" but never tell you how to do this. WHY?!! bc they dont know how to do this themselves, but it s easy to tell others what to do. below r some of my suggestions on how to respond to those well meaning ppl Thank you. Thanks, i understand that this is a time for rest or vaca...do you have any suggestions on how to relax or rest? Thanks, you know im happiest when im busy. what wud u do to rest but still feel useful?

Q&A: Bored with bed rest?

Hi, I am 35 weeks and yesterday found out that I am already 50% effaced and need to rest for the duration of the pregnancy. Coupled with that this is my 5th pregnanacy and I've had 3 c-sections so far, so they consider it high risk. Today is only day 1 for me, and I am trying to devise some projects to hopfully hold me off another 2-4 weeks. I like the idea of the needlework (I actually cross stitch) and will be watching movies on netflix and reading and writing. I was actually hoping to work until the end of june to deliver early july. But I guess this baby has other plans. I do feel for the mothers though who have been on bedrest for a long time. Just hang in there. With my 3rd preg, I was out from 8 weeks because I had bad vertigo and headaches. Then I went into preterm labor at 25 weeks and went on strict bedrest. So i know it is tough. Hang in there. I just didn't think I was going to have to go out before I wanted to. But I guess in the end, with a healthy baby, it is the best thing. All the best to you guys!

Hello Ladies. I was put on bedrest at week 24 and i am now 30 weeks. cant believe ive made it this far. my doc says we are aiming for 34 but i am hoping we get to 37. i have tried to keep myself busy but it is definitely very hard. i am just thankful that my little one is ok. good luck to all of you fellow "bedresters"

Q&A: Bored with bed rest?

Yes, hello ladies I just made it to 37 weeks. My doc put me on bedrest this past Friday claiming that the baby's weight is to small. She is 4 lbs and 6 ounces right now, and suppose to be at at least 6 lbs or more. Also being having increased contractions. I am in my forties (a late bloomer) with a history of high blood pressure. I guess my doc is just being safe. However bedrest, I thought would be somewhat of a vacation since I've been working so hard, but NOT! My little girlie is worth me resting until she arrives! Hang in their ladies because the BEST IS YET TO COME!!

Q&A: Bored with bed rest?

My mom taught me how to knit a few weeks ago (it's actually very easy!) so I've been making a baby blanket to pass some time. if you know someone who knits, ask them to show you the basics so that you can make a blanket for your baby!

Q&A: Bored with bed rest?

I know very well what you mean. I was in your situation three months ago. I got back pain and headaches because I was sitting to much in bed, but as my doctor prescribed I had to abide those orders, for the baby's health. My husband bought a new Temperpedic mattress because he saw me struggle every day. Since I have changed the mattress my bed rest became a dream.

Q&A: Bored with bed rest?

I went on bed rest at 23 weeks. I am at 32 weeks now, so I am just over halfway through (assuming I am able to carry to term). I agree with the other posts above about a crafty hobby. I have taken up knitting like crazy! The other thing I really recommend is bringing in friends and family. I am they type that hates accepting help, but this experience has really forced me to reach out. Even a 15 minute visit from a friend can work absolute wonders to boost my mood. Sometimes people avoid the situation because they don't know what to do. Some of my friends I just tell that all I need is company, while my family tends to try to do some chores around the house to help out. Good luck all you other bed resters! This experience has been incredibly challenging for me, but I know it will all be worth it when our daughter arrives.

Q&A: Bored with bed rest?

I've been staying sane by working on projects I can do in bed or from the couch. I am lucky enough to have my mother in laws help, but I still have my independence. I still do laundry and cook (sitting down in my comfy computer chair), I knit, play board games & barbies with my DD, catch up on all of my shows via netflix and hulu, I also have a stack of books and a kindle full of reading material, and I spend time on my favorite web pages blogging and chatting with others . My days go by pretty quickly and without boredom. So far I survived 6 weeks on strict bedrest and because I did so well, my doctor put me on restricted bedrest for the past 3 weeks...so I am able to get out a little as long as I sit 90% of the time. Good luck to you and hope some of these ideas help you.

Q&A: Bored with bed rest?

I was put on bed rest at 30 weeks. I'm 32 weeks today and I think I started getting bored the day after I was ordered to stay at home. I'm at a high risk for preclampsia so I've been ordered to stop work immediately and keep an eye on my blood pressure. I must say, even though I was really bummed about having to leave work early, it has been helpful. Now I'm nesting; preparing baby's room and my husband is spoiled with all the baking I'm doing and of course I can't overdo it but at least I'm not running around like I would if I was still at work. So to my fellow bed resters, there is a reason why our doctor advised us to take it easy. I'm sure you'll find something to do around the house that will not be too strenuous. Rest up... we'll need all our energy for the big day!!

Q&A: Bored with bed rest?

Bed rest is a true emotional roller coaster for sure! I am 32 weeks been on bed rest 5 days (not long I know), but long enough to know I am over it.... its hard to keep someone like me down when I am used to being on the go full time! I will be on bed rest until the baby decides she is ready to come! I am also hospitalized bed rest.... so it doesn't get much better....

Q&A: Bored with bed rest?

I've been on significant bed rest (4 months or more) with 3 of my 5 kiddos. I've had enough of Netflix and books to last me a lifetime! I have found that doing online volunteering keeps me sane--there are virtual opportunities, as well as support communities like sidelines.org where you can be on bedrest and still feel like you're doing some good out there!

Q&A: Bored with bed rest?

I started collecting handbells when I was put on bed rest, I was getting so bored and I figured out this will help time to pass more quickly. There are a lot of websites where someone can find such products and I could choose from a great variety of bells, I had a lot of fun searching on the internet for beautiful handbells and this definitely saved me from boredom.
