Q&A: Abdominal pain during pregnancy?

I’m having a lot of cramping. Is something wrong with my baby?

Re: I’m having a lot of cramping. Is something wrong with my baby?

The Bump Expert

Probably not. Lower abdominal cramping is just one of those things that happen (yep -- another one) when a baby is growing in your belly. Doctors call it round ligament pain. See, your uterus is getting bigger every day (so is baby!), and the muscles and ligaments supporting it are stretching out to accommodate the changes. That stretching can bring a bit of pain, especially when you change positions, cough or are particularly active. These mild aches and jabs are normal and (sorry) may persist as your uterus continues to grow. To get some relief, scale back the physical activity and avoid cramp-inducing positions. Also try a warm bath, or simply stretch out and kick up your heels -- resting comfortably should ease the pain.

You needn’t worry unless the pain is severe, constant or accompanied by bleeding or other unusual signs. If you have any of these symptoms, call your doctor right away.

re: Q: Abdominal pain?

I'm glad I'm not the only one! My doctor advised me to quit exercising altogether which I'm bummed about. My facility is graciously freezing my account until I can get back to my routine. Good thing it's summer now and maybe I can try swimming in our pool. I have severe cramps and Tylenol helps. I often wondered if something was wrong with my baby until my doctor said "the good thing is, there's nothing down there anymore. Your ovaries, kidneys, everything has moved up so there's nothing there but round ligaments." Good luck and stay strong!

re: Q: Abdominal pain?

Since this is my first baby I panicked when I started feeling this cramping. I have endometrosis and thought I was having a complication. I am happy to know its normal. Well, kinda happy cause it hurts hehehe

Q&A: Abdominal pain during pregnancy?

I have the same round ligament pain and I thought something was wrong too. I have had to call into work the last two days due to not sleeping well and the pain. R&R is helping though.

Q&A: Abdominal pain during pregnancy?

My pain was so horrible I couldn't belive that it was just "mild round ligament pain" because it started happening at regular intervals that would stop me in my tracks. I had an emergency visit to my OB who said everything was fine. It got so bad following my visit that I couldn't move for a few days. The worst of it passed and I'm dealing with "mild" round ligament pain now. I just wanted to share my experience because every other person that has been pregnant before made it seem like those pains are always mild...I thought I was having a miscarriage they were so bad! Just something else we might have to deal with! Warm baths were the only thing that helped me...Tylenol didn't put a dent in the pain until the intensity came down.

Q&A: Abdominal pain during pregnancy?

I'm suffering from this pain as well, but mostly on my right side. It can be quite painful at times. There is nothing "mild" about it- it hurts! Some days i can barely walk and have had to stay home twice because of it. Good luck to all who are also dealing with hit.

Q&A: Abdominal pain during pregnancy?

I am so glad to know I'm not the only one! It does hurt so bad I can barely walk at times. I've recently relocated and it was the worst then with all the packing and cleaning and unpacking. I know I was lifting things I shouldn't have been also, and that's probably what made it so bad. I was worried I would go into labor prematurely. I think too much activity makes the pain bad. We should probably chill out a bit and the pain won't be as bad.

Q&A: Abdominal pain during pregnancy?

I'm so glad that I'm not the only one. I had that on Saturday and it freaked me out to no end. I ended up laying down, drinking some hot tea and having a warm (not hot) heating pad. I was very scared and am happy that it's 'normal', at least it's explainable.

Q&A: Abdominal pain during pregnancy?

I have some lower abdominal pain, but my main issue is the upper quadrant. For the last 3+ months I've been dealing with burning, stretching, pins and needles, sharp and almost constant pains above my left rib cage above my uterus. It is horrible, and no one can help me. I saw a chiropractor for a month and it's doing nothing for me so I quit that (went for a month 3x a week). So yes... I can relate to this question :(

Q&A: Abdominal pain during pregnancy?

Not sure if anyone else has had this experience, but i've gotten pretty severe cramping occasionally since becoming pregnant (I'm 25 weeks currently), and it's almost always gotten better after having a bm. Round ligament pain for me has been sharp stabbing, whereas this pain is more like the worst cramps ever.

Q&A: Abdominal pain during pregnancy?

pheww!!! am not the only one experiencing this. I had very severe pain on the upper abdomen which lasted for bout 8 hrs, I cudnt move and I seriously thought am in ealry labor. I called my doctor and she said that it is the round ligament pain. I had no idea that round lligament pains could be so severe. I was on bed the whole time and took tums for gas which eased the pain:) Happy pregnancy to all!!!

Q&A: Abdominal pain during pregnancy?

I have had Braxton Hick's contractions and round ligament pains. I can tell the difference in the two, but I got really worried when I started having REALL intense pains down my right side.. It was unbearable and ended up at the hospital.. Turned out that pregnancy can help to inflame the gall bladder.. After four days of no food or drink by mouth it calmed.. The hospital stay was awful, but with diet control its better now.. Please dont ignore pains that are limited to one side. Call your OB. Good luck to all! :)

Q&A: Abdominal pain during pregnancy?

I had been experiencing a lot of pain, and I went in to the hospital for an emergency visit. It turned out I had a gallbladder attack and a kidney infection which led to a UTI. The more I look at this, the more I see that pregnant women's symptoms of a UTI can be different than a not pregnant woman's. I had not painful urination, just pain in my upper right quadrant. For those of you experiencing that kind of pain, I'd get it checked out-they don't go away on their own.

Q&A: Abdominal pain during pregnancy?

I too experienced abdomonial pain. It started when I was 27 weeks (I'm 28 weeks now). The area around my belly button was really tight and everytime I would walk or sit up, it would hurt. It took about a week to go away. I figured it was my uterus stretching and getting bigger, but didn't know until I researched it online. I found that rubbing lotion on my belling and lying down with my feet up helped with the pain.

Q&A: Abdominal pain during pregnancy?

I am experiencing constant abdominal pain around my belly button area. I am now 29 weeks pregnant and had to stay away from work yesterday. I felt better after getting some rest but the pain is back again today after going to work again. My baby is growing pretty fast and actually measures 3 weeks older than he is supposed to be so maybe that's why I am in so much agony.

Q&A: Abdominal pain during pregnancy?

I had severe abdominal pain with my son at 24 weeks (I am currently 32 weeks). I went to the ER and they said I had a UTI which turned into a kidney infection. They said once you have progressed into a kidney infection it causes severe pain and brings on contractions. Make sure you're drinking enough water and eating healthy. If you think you have a UTI, go to the doctor immediately. Once it turns into a kidney infection (which it does rapidly) you need IV antibiodics from the ER.

Q&A: Abdominal pain during pregnancy?

We discussed this in our birthing classes and our instructor said that sometimes it's a calcium deficiency. Ever since I've added a calcium supplement, I seem to have those pains less frequently (no more charlie horses in my legs at night either). Also, she says to keep hydrated b/c that's why a lot of the pains during pregnancy hit us (even Braxton Hicks). Kinda hard to do sometimes especially since it's irritating to always be going to the loo, but I suppose I'd rather do that than be doubled over in pain.

Not sure if this is the same thing but ok so my shoulders, fingers, hips and toes are so painful. the pain from this radiates to make my whole leg and arms sore. i am in agony with my feet, sometimes bringing me to tears. it is a constant 24/7 pain and tylenol doesn't help. all the pains are worse in the morning, but stay with me all day. i havent walked properly for 2 weeks, always limping a bit. i have to add i have no external swelling, this is my 3rd pregnancy, Im 36 yrs old and 31 wks pregnant...

Q&A: Abdominal pain during pregnancy?

I have also had the "pins and needles" & pain on my left side above my rib cage...I am 31 weeks along. I have found that placing a small flat pillow under my belly while lying on my left side helps. I am guessing it is from constantly lying on my left side and the weight of my stomach pulling down.

I had severe lower right back pain that eventually moved to my lower abdomen when I was around 20weeks. I thought it was just round ligament pain, but when I when to the ER it turned out to be a kidney infection!

Wow I can't believe how "normal" this is. There must be something better we can do other than just painfully bear through it. Resting has helped with mine but theres only so much resting I can do...

Q&A: Abdominal pain during pregnancy?

At just under 30 weeks, I had a severe cramp in my lower abdomen for over an hour so I called my doctor who recommended I go to the hospital to make sure everything was okay with the baby. He was fine and the pain subsided shortly thereafter. Since then (about two days now), I regularly have mild cramming when it sit/stand or roll over while sleeping. I guess the blissful phase of pregnancy is over!
