Q&A: Is sex safe during pregnancy?

Is sex safe during pregnancy? Do we need to take any precautions?

Re: Is sex safe during pregnancy? Do we need to take any precautions?

The Bump Expert

Sex during pregnancy (or, let's face it, anytime) is certainly a sensitive topic, but as long as everything is normal and everyone's healthy, sex is safe from that first positive HPT right up until your water breaks. Don't worry about sex harming baby -- the amniotic sac that surrounds the fetus and the thick mucus plug outside the cervix act as protective barriers.

If you're at particular risk of preterm labor or miscarriage or notice unusual pain, discharge or bleeding after sex, your doctor might recommend certain precautions or limits. And, even if your pregnancy is perfectly normal, warn your husband to never blow air directly into your vagina. In rare circumstances, this can lead to an air embolism fatal to both you and baby. And of course, make sure you know your partner's sexual history and that he's been tested for STDs and HIV. (Yes, we know, you learned this one in seventh grade... but it's just that important.)

Q: I've heard of Irish twins before and was wondering if we should be using protection while I'm prego. What are the odds of getting pregnant while I'm pregnant if we don't use bc?

re: Q: Is sex safe?

that's a question I've been wondering about as well!

re: Q: Is sex safe?

I used to work with a lady who actually had twins that were concieved at different times. Imagine her surprise! Basically, her son was born full term and her daughter was born premature (about a month and a half if I remember right). Her doctor told her that if you're still having periods, you're still ovulating, and therefore, you can still get pregnant. I wouldn't worry about it if your periods have stopped, but my cousin continued her periods almost her entire pregnancies with both of her children, so I had fun teasing her that she could have had a litter! :)

re: Q: Is sex safe?

I just looked on Wikipedia.com about getting pregnant while you're pregnant and it's contriversial, some believe it can happen and some believe it can't. They agree that if you have two uteruses(or uteri??) it is possible, but that's a rare condition.

Q&A: Is sex safe during pregnancy?

Beware of sex late in pregnancy! Here's why. I didn't have any sex issues with my first three pregnancy's. My husband and I were cautious or did not have sex in the last few weeks. But with number four we threw caution to the wind and had sex only a couple days before my due date. (so not smart!) This upset the baby and she flipped over. Her new position was transverse (laying high with her back bone up in my ribs and the imbilical cord hanging down on top of my cervix) In this postion had my water broken the cord would have been sucked out and kinked and would almost surely be fatal for my baby. At this point I had to have a C-Section the next day. Let me just say that this was a total shock to me and recovery awful compared to my other pregnancy recoveries. I was also depressed; ashamed for such a selfish mistake and scared to get pregnant again since all the doctors I talked to said I had to have C-sections from now on. So PLEASE be very careful about sex after your baby has dropped into your pelvis before delivery. That is where that baby needs to be and it is NOT a good idea to do anything to make that baby move around.

Sex can be "iffy" if you are RH- because if you bleed for any reason before or after sex it could mean that you, and the baby's blood might be mixing, which could lead you'r body into terminating the pregnancy.

Q&A: Is sex safe during pregnancy?

madmcmath -- My dr. said a vibrator is fine as long as you aren't at risk/high risk. If you really want to be sure ask your ob.

Q&A: Is sex safe during pregnancy?

I just found out about my pregnancy a few days ago. I assume to be about five and a half weeks along. My husband and I tried to have sex yesterday, but I started getting really bad cramps. We tried again today, and had the same issue. This time, the cramps lasted longer and were much much much more painful. Is there a danger to the baby? Are these symptoms of miscarriage?

Q&A: Is sex safe during pregnancy?

Before I knew I was prego, my boyfriend and I had sex a certain time. The cramps were unbearable. I couldn't understand why it was happening to me. Another time, we got into it and had to push him off of me!! I got soooo sick and went to throw up... We haven't had sex since.

Q&A: Is sex safe during pregnancy?

My doctor said that as long as it still feels good it's good for you. Well, that's basically what she said, I'm takng a bit of creative license with her words. If it hurts try changing positions(missionary style hurt me throughout my first trimester so we changed to girl on top positions). If ALL sex hurts you might want to talk to your doctor about it, especially if there's spotting.

Q&A: Is sex safe during pregnancy?

I looked this up on line because i to was experiencing cramps and nausea after sex. It said missionary position is bad because the weight of the guy pushes on the uterus and then on the surrounding capillaries. That is why you have nausea and cramps. I have sinced changed to me being on top and it has helped tremendously! i still get a few cramps but they are very minor and last a few minutes! Hope that helps!

Q&A: Is sex safe during pregnancy?

That is nice to know! I just found out I was prego yesterday! Apparently I am 6 weeks!! :) About a week ago we were in missionary position and I wound up running to the bathroom in the middle to throw up! I had no idea why... It was so weird. I am glad to know why that happened now but have been scared to try again.

Q&A: Is sex safe during pregnancy?

Well, I am on my 39th week and have had sex almost on a regular basis except for the past two or three weeks. But up until then, I have been able to have a consistant sex drive. I asked my dr whether I could have sex, only because the person I am having sex with is not the father. Sounds silly, but I had to be certain. But in all reality I find it to a good excercise and a good stress reliever. :)

Q&A: Is sex safe during pregnancy?

its like my boyfriends sex drive has skyrocketed since i've become pregnant but i keep expressing to him to be careful because i dont want to harm the baby. im only 6 weeks and 4 days but im still scared. i've had very light blood show up after sex twice in the past 2 weeks. is he perhaps going too far or tearing something?? should i quit sex all together or engage in extremely lighter play?

Q&A: Is sex safe during pregnancy?

My boyfriend and I had sex last night starting off w/me on top and then eventually missionary. I had to talk him into it because he's extra cautious since we found out we're pregnant. But Its really tender in there...I guess because of my uterus growing & everything, but when he was on top I had to end it early because things just felt weird for lack of better words. I didn't have any bleeding but it did feel uncomfortable during sex. I hope everything is ok and I just hope it won't feel that way throughout the pregnancy...

Q&A: Is sex safe during pregnancy?

someone earlier said that if u are rh- it definetly isnt safe....isnt that why doctors give rhogam shots to rh- women....to prevent your body from building anti-bodies to the baby. I am rh- and have had the shot with both pregnancies..and how exactly would ur blood miz with the babies if you were bleeding? I'm not trying to be critical i'm just curious

Q&A: Is sex safe during pregnancy?

For a while I would hurt everytime my husband and I would have sex too. When I got pregnant it felt as though it was in "awkward" as strange as it sounds and would make me sore afterwards, even when we tried switching positions. When I entered my 3rd trimester I started doing perineal massasages and I know that sounds gross but when you plan on doing an all natural birth every little bit helps, and it turned out to help out my sex life too! I guess it must be releaving the pressure on my vaginal mussels from my ever growing uterus because its realived alot of the lower tension. Also i found doing keigls during sex help if you do them before you actually start "going at it". Also these will help with vaginal birth, and your husband will apreciate it too :) these too things worked for me and I hope they help someone else!!!

Q&A: Is sex safe during pregnancy?

Regarding RH- I am RH- and have had *light* spotting after sex. My doctor has said it is perfectly safe for me to continue to have sex. Even if you are spotting, the baby isn't bleeding, you are. The baby is surrounded by amniotic fluid. I have never heard of any special precautions that RH- women have to follow. Just that all your medical providers are aware of your status and that you get the shot.

Q&A: Is sex safe during pregnancy?

since ive found out iwas pregnant its like i yearn for sex----and wen iam n the moment its more better too me--i have had only one incident where i had to actually stop because of pain but afterward there was no spotting of any kind or nothing...and iam a first time mother and my doctor told me that sex can actually make birth a little easier =)

Q&A: Is sex safe during pregnancy?

Regarding the sex positions.I have tried both of them during sex and cannot do them for a long period of time. I found that getting on my hands and knees (aka doggie style) was so much better and more comfortable for me plus my husband likes it.

Q&A: Is sex safe during pregnancy?

I guess the best thing to do if you are worried is ask your doctor. I am on my 4th pregnancy and have never had a problem. I had my 3rd at 38 1/2 weeks and had sex less than 24 hours before that. I will be 40 weeks in about 2 days with this(last) one and just stopped a few days ago. It didn't hurt while but later on I got some awful crampping. last time hands and knees was more comfortable and this time missionary was. I guess every person and pregnancy is different.

Q&A: Is sex safe during pregnancy?

I'm about twenty-one weeks pregnant and my sex drive has recently started to decrease and sex now hurts and i bled a little bit after the last time. they say the first and third trimester is when your sex drive peaks (according to the book what to expect when you're expecting...) but everybody is different. i think it's crazy to not have sex at all but i could see how some people are afraid to hurt the baby. my doctor said sex is fine just not like on the hard floor or in places that don't let you be comfortable and switch up the positions if it starts to hurt. i've hardly had any morning sickness or pains from the beginning of this pregnancy so i'm pretty lucky not much has affected me.

Q&A: Is sex safe during pregnancy?

can i have sex during my 3 trimester

nakele | November 21 , 2010 4:53 PM

Q&A: Is sex safe during pregnancy?

@nakele Yes you can have sex in your 3rd trimester. My husband and I have sex normally 1 to 2 times a day. tmi I know. We have found that side by side positions and on all fours type positions tend to work best, but everyone in different. The only time I would say not to is if it causes massive cramping or is super uncomfortable. also my doctor said that frequent sex can actually help you go full term with your baby. Read "What to expect when your expecting" also "Better Birth" both have been super helpful for me

Q&A: Is sex safe during pregnancy?

The comment below about RH- negatinve leading to your body terminating a pregnancey is very misleading. There is only danger to your baby if you have been "sensitized". I won't explain it all here, but don't rely on medical questions being answered here. Ask your doctor.

Q&A: Is sex safe during pregnancy?

zmochafocax, I too was experiencing cramping to a painful degree after having sex with my husband. I asked my doc about it and she said that there is a chemical in semen that reacts with a chemical that is present during pregnancy and it causes a cramping sensation. she says that it is not harmful to baby or me but that if it is too painful to just have hubby pull out or simply lay off the sex for awhile. I am now almost 32weeks pregnant and we are still having sex and the pulling out worked for us. hope this helps!

Q&A: Is sex safe during pregnancy?

Hi I'm 11 weeks pregnant and my sex drive with pregnancy has gone up, but a few days ago I noticed I was spotting after my husband and I did it!!! Luckily I been reading a book my sister in law gave me-- where it explains changes that happen in your body and to your baby as well, "Your Pregnancy week by week" by Glade Curtis and Judith Schuler in this book says for some women is normal to have spotting @ any time in your pregnancy but most common in the first trimester --it happens because the fertilized egg implants into the uterine wall . . . I was less worried after that but I still called my Dr. and she said that If I kept bleeding I had to go to a Hospital-- she asked if a had pain in my abdomen I said no....If its only spotting drink a lot of water no sex, no vaginal douches and no heavy lifting. . Thats what I been doing ... Hope it helps ladies!!! :-)
