Q&A: How early should I plan on ordering nursery furniture?

How early should I plan on ordering nursery furniture?

Re: How early should I plan on ordering nursery furniture?

The Bump Expert

It’s great that you’re thinking ahead. We put this question to our users, and the general consensus was to go ahead and decide on a style or theme as soon as you want, and then start getting your furniture together in the second trimester.

Some things to ask yourself when working out your timing: How long will my furniture take to ship? Will I be able to help move the furniture around when it arrives, or will I be too big? Have I waited long enough in my pregnancy to be sure everything is going as planned? Am I giving myself enough time to have things ready if baby decides to show up early?

Still not sure what to do? Here are a few tips from the real experts -- our new moms on the 0-6 Months message board:

"We did pretty much everything during the second trimester, when I had the energy to help get things ready, and wasn't too big to help put things together. By the end of my pregnancy, my belly was so big and I was so exhausted that it would have been very stressful to have to deal with organizing and decorating a nursery." -- bicoastalgirl

"I would suggest as soon as you find out the sex or know the theme of your nursery. Our crib and dresser took 14 weeks to come in and we were finishing up the nursery one week before I delivered." -- chihuahua26

"I think I was maybe 28 weeks when we ordered our furniture. I didn't want to do everything too early and be twiddling my thumbs for months before she got here!" -- ValSept10

"General rule of thumb is to have everything done and set by 37 weeks (not just the nursery either -- have your car seat installed and inspected by then too) because baby can come at anytime after that." -- ErinCB

"We got the furniture when I was about 6 months pregnant. Main reason was to be sure everything was ok with the baby." -- MLK97

"We waited until I was about 25 weeks along. The nursery was finished by about the time I was 32 weeks along. I wouldn't have done it any other way." -- N5ssa

"Earlier the better. At least start looking around b/c some companies take longer than others for ordering times." -- Mestroud

Q&A: How early should I plan on ordering nursery furniture?

We bought our crib and bedding that would match either sex that we liked at 16 weeks (4months) because we had a big cash flow come in and we wanted to make sure we got the necessitys at least because we can always get the lil things at a baby shower.

Q&A: How early should I plan on ordering nursery furniture?

We've been looking at cribs and plan on ordering one within the next few weeks. We want to have the nursery set up and painted before the third trimester if possible so that we can start filling it with all the little things from the shower. I also don't want to be assembling furniture and carrying things with an enormous belly during holiday chaos! (I'm due early January)

Q&A: How early should I plan on ordering nursery furniture?

I'm 32 weeks and we just started painting the nursery the other day (or should I say hubby started painting the other day LOL) Our crib and other things have been ordered and are due to get here by the time I'm just past 33 weeks, then I can start putting away the gifts from the shower and start washing clothing and gettting organized. I wish I would have started earlier since now I'm tired and have been taken off work early. But at least when I'm done work at 34 weeks I'll have something to slowly work away at so I don't get too tired of sitting on my couch!

Q&A: How early should I plan on ordering nursery furniture?

It took our furninture over 6 months to be delivered (after sending back a broken dresser). Then we had to air out the room (thank goodness it was nice weather outside) and put arm & hammer baking soda packets in the room (with all the drawers and doors open) just to get the smell out (new furniture smell was really strong on the baby furniture we bought). Now the room and furniture are ready to go. Just waiting on next appointment to find out what we are having so my hubby can start painting. (we bought the furniture the month after we started trying....I was very optimistic we would get pregnant sooner or later) :)

Q&A: How early should I plan on ordering nursery furniture?

The baby store near us came out with some 20% off coupons around the holidays, and we took advantage of them to order our furniture. I had just started my second trimester. This will be my second baby, and I remember how uncomfortable I was during the end of the last one, and wanted to be sure to get everything in while I was feeling good enough to help put the room together. My advice -- plan early, and keep an eye out for sales!

Whenever you want!!! I started looking for furniture items ASAP I wanted to be prepared and take advantage of any deals I might have missed by waiting too long.

Q&A: How early should I plan on ordering nursery furniture?

I'm going to start buying everything for my nursery around 30 -31 wks. Right now I'm 20 wks. I was planning on waiting until after my baby shower so I could figure out what I didn't have. After reading about how the furniture takes a long time, which I might ship mine as well, makes me want to get started on it sooner. At least, with the crib and bassinet.

Q&A: How early should I plan on ordering nursery furniture?

I just ordered furniture from Treasure Rooms and it is going to take 3 months to come in. If we wanted the really nice expensive stuff it was even longer. Plus we will then have to put it together. So, I would not wait until the last minute to order. At least start looking early on so you know how long it will take to come in.

Q&A: How early should I plan on ordering nursery furniture?

I bought the crib and dresser at 20 weeks and the night stand that matches take 4 months to get so I am happy I didn't wait to long.

We bought ours at 12 weeks. It was on sale and it was what we liked. We figured we would get that big purchase out of the way. Everyone we have told has thought we were crazy, oh well there are always opinions!

Q&A: How early should I plan on ordering nursery furniture?

I am just starting to buy furniture for the baby nursery so that in two weeks when we find out the gender I can work on the decorative stuff. I figured get the big furniture out of the way and purchased then I can take my time and be creative once I know the gender :D I am 5 months. :D

Q&A: How early should I plan on ordering nursery furniture?

This is up to you. Most people get very excited and right after they find out the baby's gender they start looking for either pink or blue furniture. That reminds me of a very nice website with vanity furniture but nothing that would fit in my child's room. Well, I guess we can always redecorate our own bedroom as well isn't it?

Q&A: How early should I plan on ordering nursery furniture?

I've started to make a nursery plan when I was in the second trimester of pregnancy. I've ordered some Amish furniture as I wanted to create a neutral room as I didn't know if my baby will be a boy or a girl.

Q&A: How early should I plan on ordering nursery furniture?

When to get the furniture is mostly a personal preference, and you can’t go wrong with the advice given to you by the other posters here. One thing to take note of is how much you intend to spend on the furniture, as well as a gauge of how long you think the furniture will be in use for.
