Q&A: When does breast milk form?

When exactly does breast milk form in the body?

Re: When exactly does breast milk form in the body?

The Bump Expert

During the second trimester, increased levels of hormones will stimulate the production of milk in the mammary glands as well as the growth of milk ducts in your breasts. (Milk ducts are lobes in your mammary gland at the tip of the nipple.) But it’s not until after you deliver that you’ll begin full-scale milk production.

Right after you give birth (but sometimes as early as the second trimester), your breasts produce something called colostrum, which looks like a thick, yellowish fluid. It’s full of antibodies and will help strengthen baby’s immune system. Since baby only needs a small amount of nutrients in these first few days (because of their small tummy size), your body will naturally hold off on allowing actual breast milk to flow until after baby’s three or four days old. By this point, your body will produce milk in a supply-and-demand-like manner, making as much it needs to based on your breastfeeding patterns.

Q&A: When does breast milk form?

Okay this is gross, but I've already had a little yellow crust on my nipples that I'm guessing is dried colostrum. This started at about 14 weeks! It's not a lot, but still gross and weird. Anyone else getting this?

Q&A: When does breast milk form?

Yes I am also 14 weeks and have noticed the crustiness on my breasts. I am so glad to hear that you are having it also! And yes it does look like you are oozing something nasty.

Q&A: When does breast milk form?

i have a question about this topic. this is my second pregnancy and i'm curious if my milk will come in sooner (like the last few months of my pregnancy), then later (after giving birth). If it does come in while i'm pregnant is it normal or ok to start pumping and freezing my milk? i'm already worried i won't have enough milk supply when i go back to work.

Q&A: When does breast milk form?

This is going to sound terrible but I have a son with is 1 1/2 and I still have SLIGHT milk production from nursing him lol. I'm not due until april and I'm thinking that this won't affect my milk production for the second baby.

Q&A: When does breast milk form?

Please don't pump before the baby is born. Pumping and breast feeding causes uterine contractions (helps uterus return to normal size after baby is born) and could cause you to go into preterm labor. The doc told me that milk leaking is normal and could happen at any time during pregnancy. DON'T PUMP TILL AFTER BABY COMES!!!

Q&A: When does breast milk form?

DONY pump before baby is born u need ur colostrum for him or her to help boost babies immune system for the first six months.. And as lindsaymg said it does help to bring ur uterus back down to normal size which can cause difficulties in pregnancy.

Q&A: When does breast milk form?

OK, just because your milk has came in or the colostrum do not pump, it will put you into pre-term labor. I could not even pump 2 hours before my scheduled c-section. and breast milk is not nasty for mostof that think it is, it is a beautiful thing just like birth.

Q&A: When does breast milk form?

I'm 21 weeks and don't have the crustiness... But one of my nipples seems to be a little... Erm... Damp. I'm thinking the clear fluid is probably normal, but the fact that it's leaking from where I had a nipple ring over 5 years ago is a little worrisome. I can't imagine all the joking my friends and I did about milk squirting in three directions from the ring could actually be a legitimate event. Any thoughts?

Q&A: When does breast milk form?

I had colustrum in my second trimester with my second child, but it actually took longer for my milk to come in after he was born than the first. I'm 13 weeks with my third and had major breast sorness (more than with the first two) in my first trimester. It went away for a few weeks but I'm now having random mild sharp pains in my breasts which I am assuming is because of colustrum begining to form or something similar. I have a close friend that actually had mastitis in her last trimester, I had never heard of this but apparently it is possible. I don't think there are any normal patterns when it comes to when your milk comes in but I do know that it is important not to pump. If you're past your due date and are trying to induce labor, save what you pump and give it to baby. Colustrum is liquid gold for a newborn.

Q&A: When does breast milk form?

I am so relieved to have found this post... the yellow crust was so unexpected when it happened to me and freaked me out! I definitely do not remember reading this in the things to expect for the first few months, ha. So yes, comes as a surprise and I'm glad to see other moms being so candid- thank you for making me feel better!!

Q&A: When does breast milk form?

I'm 19weeks and 4days. I'm a first time mom and I do plan on breast feeding my child when she arrives. I haven't experienced yellow stuff that comes out of the breast. But i decided to express some milk out of my breast to get the methods down pack that way I can have a visual of breast feeding methods. When I did I got clear water like liquid come out in drops. I was so excited that I was doing it right. My husband wanted me to put my breasts away because I was having too much fun.

Q&A: When does breast milk form?

In response to the nipple ring comment (though I know it's a little late for the person that asked)... It's a little embarrassing but I don't know how many women like myself didn't know that milk is expressed out of your breast through multiple holes. It seemed like a key topic never brought up in health class let alone all the books I read to prepare for breast-feeding. It really threw me for a loop when I first noticed it. So, no worries to those of you who are finding out new things about your body like I did.

Q&A: When does breast milk form?

Ok. As a nursing mom who is also 14 weeks pregnant I can tell you that it bfing does NOT induce labor for a healthy pregnancy. It's a common practice. At the same time, people think that, even some doctors are not well informed and will recommend ceasing bfing if pregnant. The reason for this is that the same hormone is involved, oxytocin, as the one that induces labor. Its also produced during sex, cuddle with someone you love or if you eat chocolate. Many people do not understand that until the uterus is prepared for labor oxytocin, doesn't really do anything to make it happen early. On a related topic, colostrum can't be "used up." When you get it and when you switch over to breast milk is all controlled by your hormones, if you are nursing another child you could be using from when it comes in, 2nd or third trimester to delivery. I know where these misunderstandings come from, I used to believe the same ideas because I read them somewhere and believed it. Many healthcare providers are not well informed about breastfeeding and give misleading or inaccurate information to moms because of it. Its amazing if you're thinking about giving your child the health benefits that nursing provides, you should know that it can also be challenging. Speaking from experience, make sure that before you deliver, you have a health provider that understands and supports it, a lactation consultant or use la leche league or kellymom.com if you have questions.

Q&A: When does breast milk form?

I'm at 26 weeks (first baby) and just this morning a little squirt of white milk came out while I was cleaning the crusties off. I'm feeling rather accomplished and like a mommy today, although slightly annoyed that I might need to start using pads pretty soon. When I told my husband about this milestone, he just asked if we were out of Oreos.
