Q&A: Vanishing Twin Syndrome?

What is "Vanishing Twin Syndrome"? I'm having twins, is this something I should worry about?

The Bump Expert

In some cases, one fetus in a multiple pregnancy will die in the womb, and the fetal tissue will be condensed in its sac by the other twin, placenta, or mother, giving the appearance that the baby has literally disappeared. This is what we call Vanishing Twin Syndrome (VTS). VTS usually occurs in the first trimester, and rarely are there real medical risks to either mom or the other twin that are associated with it when it does happen this early on.

Q&A: Vanishing Twin Syndrome?

I supposedly had a vanishing twin in my seventh week. Other than it happening to me I hadn't heard anything about it before I got pregnant, or after until now. My mom was really devastated about it, but it really didn't phase me at all. And now my little girl is perfect in every way!

Q&A: Vanishing Twin Syndrome?

It usually happens within the first trimester of pregnancy. My first visit, my doctor (the ultrasound tech) saw two sacs but only one baby within one of the sacs. The second sac stayed empty and eventually disappeared around my 2nd trimester. Your body will usually absorb the empty sac or it may come out as if you are spotting. I am now 5 months expecting a baby girl and everything is fine. The other sac is no longer there but it didn't effect me in any way.

Q&A: Vanishing Twin Syndrome?

In the beginning of my pregnancy (6 weeks) my doctor saw 2 sacs but one baby in one of the sacs. The empty sac looked just like the sac with the baby but empty. Prior to me going to the doctor, I did have some spotting, so it could've been the empty egg losing the baby. However, it didn't effect me in any way. The other sac eventually disappeared during my 2nd trimester about 4 months or so and now I am 7 1/2 months pregnant expecting a healthy baby girl.

Q&A: Vanishing Twin Syndrome?

I went in for my first appointment at 8 weeks. My doctor told me I had had a twin pregnancy and one had died most likely in the 6th week there was a sack, a baby, but no heartbeat. I found it to be so sad. In the 12th week there was still a sack with no baby. I am now 5 months pregnant with a healty baby boy! I'm so excited! My doctor told me that the cause is unknow but that it most likely happens because there is something wrong with the baby that it's better off for the healthy baby and mom.

Q&A: Vanishing Twin Syndrome?

If both babies seem to be ok and they are growing at the same rate you shouldn't have anything to worry about. I had a miscarriage the first time I was pregnant and the second time I was pregnant with twins. They should have been 6 or 7 weeks, one had a heart beat and one did not. The one that did not was also smaller than the other. I went on to have a very good pregnancy and great delivery and now have a very healthy 3 month old baby girl. I was sad about losing another baby but my joy for having one healthy heartbeat was amazing. It didn't make it easier but I just knew I was blessed to at least have one of them.
