Q&A: What is round ligament pain?

I've started getting this sharp pain around my uterus and hips. What's going on, and should I be worried? And, is there anything I can do to help with the pain?

The Bump Expert

Don't worry -- what you're describing is called round ligament pain, and is totally normal. Here's what's happening: During pregnancy, your uterus expands from the about the size of an apple to the size of a watermelon. The ligaments that surround and support your uterus and connect it to your groin (collectively called round ligaments) have to stretch and thicken to accommodate these changes, and this can hurt a bit, especially in the second trimester. It feels like sharp pains in your abdomen or hips, and often increases when you move quickly, go from sitting to standing, cough, or laugh.

To alleviate round ligament pain, try switching positions or propping up your feet to rest for a while. It might also help to simply slow down your movements to give those ligaments more time to adjust. Your doc may suggest some gentle stretches (or even a couple of Tylenol caplets) if you're feeling the pains often. You shouldn't worry unless the pain last longer than a few minutes, is severe, or is accompanied by any bleeding, strange vaginal discharge, or other unusual signs. If any of this occurs, call your doc asap.

re: Q: Round ligament pain?

I am having these pains on my left side only. I don't have any other symptoms. Is this normal?

I'm having them just on my left side, too.

Q&A: What is round ligament pain?

I have it on my right side only. When I went to the hospital yesterday (after it being severe) they said its normal to have it on either both sides or one side. They told me to take Tylenol, use heating pads and increase water intake since its hot right now (summer time).

Q&A: What is round ligament pain?

After visiting my OB, she told me it is totally normal and typically last up until around 30 weeks. I have had slight pain on both sides andit isn't consistent. If it were to be consistent pain, like menstral cramps, then that should put up a red light and you should call your OB ASAP. She told me to take Tylenol and drink plenty of water also.

Q&A: What is round ligament pain?

I am 13 weeks and 4 days pregnant. Lately I have been getting round ligament pains when i change positions at night or when i cough...it makes a super sharp pain race through my abdomen but goes away within seconds. Thankfully, i knew what it was before i started having the pains which saved me a whole lot of stress!

Q&A: What is round ligament pain?

I think I am having these pains. It started yesterday when I woke up, it felt like pressure on my pelvis, hips and lower back. I mainly felt it when I moved in certain positions, but it seems to have gone away today.

Q&A: What is round ligament pain?

I am 18 weeks and I'm just getting over a respiratory thing (aka lots of coughing) and i began to notice the pains more due to that. I have them on both sides, often more in my right side. Switching positions helps a lot if I am lying down.

I actually have bursitis of the hip, and it's starting to hurt. If you have a chance to sign up for an aquatic aerobic class, that will help stretch out those muscles, and build endurance. First and foremost, go see a doctor and make sure that it isn't a stress fracture.

Q&A: What is round ligament pain?

I experienced this pain in my first trimester, it was in my left hip consistently during the day and night. I switched to flat shoes/sandals and got a big U-shaped pregnancy pillow for sleeping at night. These two helped a lot gradually and its all gone now.

Q&A: What is round ligament pain?

I'm having these in my hips and back, and nausea has come with it. I can't sleep cause my upper abdomen is cramping up so badly and I'm a tosser and turner before I fall asleep. Hard time getting comfortable so its not helping the sharp pains.

I am about 19 weeks pregnant, and I have found that prenatal yoga really helps alleviate back pain.

Q&A: What is round ligament pain?

If it is on your left side and trails down your leg, it is sciatic nerve pain. I have had it with all my pregnancies and they are very painful. With my first child, the doctor actually prescribed Demerol. With the 2nd, I was a stay at home mom so my partner at that time bought one of those massage machines that you can place on a chair or couch and that seemed to help a lot. I just started getting to the point now where it is starting to bother me now. Called the doctor but he wasn't in his office so I am waiting on his recommendation. I am much older now and being my 3rd pregnancy, I am hoping he will put me on early maternity leave.

Q&A: What is round ligament pain?

I had very severe round ligament pain in my abdomen (started on both sides, then migrated to the middle) in the middle of the night about 3 or 4 weeks ago (I was about 15 weeks pregnant). I didn't know what it was at that point, just that it was the worst stomach pain I'd ever had, and when it hadn't gone away within 2 hours we decided to go the ER. Soon as we got our shoes on, it started to dissipate, and it had disappeared within another hour. Went to the OB the next morning and he did an ultrasound and said it was round ligament, just a rare case of very severe and very long RLP. Since then, my occurrences of RLP have been normal (very quick and not too severe). If I had had any spotting or other symptoms, we would have rushed to the ER right away, but we waited since all I felt was the pain. I really hope I don't ever have another case of RLP like I did that time.

Q&A: What is round ligament pain?

it does not have to be only on the left side to be sciatic nerve pain. mine is on the right, and it gets so bad sometimes that i can't walk. always talk to your doctor or midwife about the best way to handle this pain.

Q&A: What is round ligament pain?

The pain is on my left side. I purchased a Bobby Pregnancy Wedge Pillow and it is really helping me. I put that one under my belly and left hip area and another pillow behind me that my right hip/butt area lays on. It's like I'm sleeping while wedged between two pillows and it feels great and I wake up in no pain! Yay! Also, I have another pillow between my knees. All of this has significantly reduced all my back, leg, and knee pain. I am also taking joint juice as a supplement. I am currently 18 weeks pregnant. Hope you all find some relief!
