What’s the chance baby’s gender could be wrong?

I’m getting an ultrasound to find out baby’s gender, but I’ve heard of doctors predicting incorrectly. What’s the chance of that?

The Bump Expert

Second to your pregnancy test saying “pregnant” (yay!), the gender reveal is one of the most exciting moments for expectant parents. Some moms-to-be want to know right away whether it’s a girl or a boy, but most doctors recommend waiting until the anatomical survey, which is done around 20 weeks, since it’s more likely to be accurate by then. At that time, you’ll get an ultrasound, and the technician should be able to tell baby’s gender with about 95 percent accuracy.

However, your doctor could give you more specific odds, depending on how easy or hard it is to see baby’s boy or girl parts. The biggest reason for error is that it’s simply too early for the technician or doctor to see the gender clearly. Very early on, it’s possible for a tailbone to get mistaken for a penis or a bum to resemble a vulva. If that’s the case, your doctor will tell you how sure or unsure they are; for example, they could tell you they’re 80 percent sure it’s a girl, and ask you to come back for another look in a week or two.

If you’ve waited the right amount of time, it may still be hard to tell, depending on the way baby’s positioned. For example, the umbilical cord could be blocking what’s between baby’s legs. (If this happens, you’ll probably find yourself wriggling on the table yelling, “Move, baby!”) But otherwise, your doctor or technician should be able to tell pretty well -- and maybe even with 100 percent certainty. Just be sure to ask exactly how definitive the prediction is before you start painting the nursery.

What’s the chance baby’s gender could be wrong?

I am 36w3d and I have been told the sex of the baby about 4 times. I've had a lot of ultrasounds to look at her kidneys. To me it seems super obvious. Looks like she is sitting right on the ultrasound transmitter. Every time the tech seems super sure. STILL people including family members are like " oh you know it could easily be wrong".... It's like they want to freak me out.

They first told me I was having a girl and then later told me it was a boy. At the time I was so relieved when they went through the measurements and said everything was looking great that I didn't think to have them point out the lady parts. I'd definitely recommend asking the tech to do that. It was a good thing they needed me back for more photos otherwise that would have been my last u/s and I would have planned for a girl and come home with a boy. I'm still a little nervous that it could be wrong but then again- what's the worst that can happen? More trips to store for returns/exchanges. Not the end of the world- I went neutral on all the big items anyways. The whole ordeal has definitely turned into an interesting conversation piece, ha.

I've gone in at 20 weeks and 22 weeks - I'm now 29 weeks, but both times they told me "boy". The second time we could definitely see his boy part, and I have to go back for another ultrasound so I will know again for sure. But I think 2 times confirmed is pretty good. My grandma still doesn't understand the technology of today and thinks they could be wrong, but I saw it for myself on the screen.

I found out I was having a girl at 15 weeks. I'm 18 weeks now! I'm hoping that they weren't wrong because we've already bought quite a few girl items!!!

I was told at 3 months u/s the doc was 90% sure it was a girl. the next one at 6 or so months it was hard to tell because the parts were swollen. I thought it looked like a boy and the tech thought so too but said if you turn it this way it looks like a girl so I didn't know. I had a home birth and didn't even look for several minutes just holding my baby and the midwife asked. we had a boy! :) my 90% girl was a wonderful boy. I was so happy with having a surprise I'm not going to ask this time. Its so much more fun. I had a baby shower in neutral colors so it didn't matter. :)

My parents were told each time I was going to be a boy. Of course when I was born it was obvious I was a girl! They still laugh about all the blue blankets in my baby pictures. I think technology has gotten a lot better recently, but to our parents & other family they still think of their own experiences. I would just request a pic of the baby's bottom to take home :)

I was told at my 20 week u/s appointment that I was having a girl and it was definitely NOT a girl when he was born! The u/s tech even wrote on the u/s picture "IT'S A GIRL!" with an arrow pointing at her lady parts (she was THAT confident!). We didn't have another u/s to confirm the gender. We even had cute little girl shoes in our maternity photos - ha! I had washed all "her" clothes, sheets, blankets and surprisingly almost every store was willing to return or exchange them (most of them without any fuss). It really was a wonderful surprise and we are so in love with our little man! I'm pretty sure the 2nd time around, we'll just keep it a surprise the whole time - or go get a 3D ultrasound just to make EXTRA sure!

My first ultrasound was at 15-16 weeks. My Dr said it was too early to tell but she thought she saw early signs of a boy.. Already having 2 boys I was bummed because I want my chance with pink and frill! at my 20 week ultrasound she told us girl! It does look like a girl but I keep looking at it to ease my mind. My husband asked if she was sure and she told us "if she doesnt grow a penis"she didnt take another look for us. I'll be having another one soon since she was hiding her heart from them. We'll see!

I had my ultrasound at 20 weeks. The tech looked and looked, I turned from side-to-side, I went to the bathroom but baby wouldn't turn! At the end, the tech said she "thinks it's a girl". When I asked how sure, she said more than 50% (imagine my confidence). We're planning on a baby Emma, but just in case, we're asking that any gifts include a receipt :-)

I was tolod Boy at 12 weeks ( early!), 17 weeks, and 20 weeks...If he turns at to be a she at birth I would be very suprised and will have to redo quite a bit of the nursery, it's 100% made for a boy!

You can never be too certain- we were told our first baby was a girl, three different times, by three different ultrasound technicians, at three different hospitals- they were all wrong! We were very surprised when she was born a he!

I got my amnio results yesterday and there was an x and a y chromosome, so it's definitely a boy! And he's not shy about showing those parts either!

With our first, at 20wks the technician said "even if you wanted to know, I wouldn't be able to tell you...this baby is not sitting still!" (not a good sign for a photographer mom!)...luckily we didn't want to know...have our 20wk next week with our 2nd and don't want to know this time either...hopefully it's not obvious.

I am an ultrasound tech. Before 14 weeks, the testicles have not dropped into the scrotal sac, so no gender should be predicted before that point. Between 15-16 weeks, the fetus has a hormone surge, so sometimes little girl parts can get swollen, and look like a penis. A good tech will only call gender if they see both a scrotum and penis, for a boy, and the labia if it is a girl. As a tech, I am always asked if I can make sure what baby really is, but NOONE has ever asked me to double check or verify there isn't a heart defect or an anomaly of some kind. Everyone needs to get their priorities in order, and worry more about the health of the baby and not the gender.

My sister was told she was having a girl, and was very surprised when the doctor announced that it was a boy at the delivery! She thought he was joking. The stores were super helpful when it came to exchanging items, and he still, 7 years later, has a purple room. She couldn't be more thrilled with her guy, though, and even if the gender was predicted incorrectly, you'll still love your baby either way. You won't want to give it back.

What’s the chance baby’s gender could be wrong?

I agree with a previous poster. I had an ultrasound at 20 weeks to find out the gender and instead found out my son had no skull and his chest was open with all of his organs just floating in a sack.....Just save your money and buy unisex jammies until baby is born, most gender specific items like crib bumpers and full outfits are not needed for newborns anyway. Worry about having a healthy baby and get all your gender specific stuff done with once a healthy baby is in your arms.

What’s the chance baby’s gender could be wrong?

I went at almost 17 weeks and they told me it was a boy! The technician said it was "pretty obvious" and that he was "really proud of his stuff" so we felt pretty confident (even though we couldn't tell what she was looking at). We have already painted the nursery blue... so lets hope she was right! We will find out next week when we go back for the long anatomy ultrasound.

they told me i was expecting a boy at 15 weeks, but only after they confirmed it, at 21 weeks, i started buying clothes and other stuff. even though i try to buy neutral stuff, sometimes i still have to choose between something boyish or girlish.

What’s the chance baby’s gender could be wrong?

It's much too early for me at 9 weeks, but when my friend was pregnant with her daughter, the ultrasound said girl, but she had dreams where her deceased father told her the doctors were wrong and it was a boy. It freaked her out for a while But ended up being a girl. This must be a sign to try for a boy!

What’s the chance baby’s gender could be wrong?

I have 4 sonograms so far - 12 weeks, 20 weeks, 22 weeks and 28 weeks and all have said girl. I go in next week for our 30 week sono and 3D/4D. I am pretty confident mine is a girl but then again I really don't want to have to repaint my pink nursery.

What’s the chance baby’s gender could be wrong?

Its kind of insensitive to tell pregnant women to get their priorities straight, of course we are concerned about having a healthy baby! I am looking forward to knowing so I can start calling my baby by his or her name when I talk to him. It will be nice to say he or she instead of "it", that feels so wrong.

What’s the chance baby’s gender could be wrong?

If your tech is unsure or you want a second opinion like me just go and do the 3d/4d ultrasound. It showed my daughter private very clear and there was no mistake or second thought about her being a girl.

What’s the chance baby’s gender could be wrong?

Pretty hard to mistake a penis and testicles! :) lol Our tech not only said we are having a BOY, we saw it and have pictures of it! :) I've been told, that there's no mistaking a boy. It's the girls that there's a chance for error.

newmama78 |

What’s the chance baby’s gender could be wrong?

I had my ultrasound at 21w2d, and I asked to have the tech show me a still of the genital region if the baby wanted to show, because I've seen enough sonograms that I was pretty confident that I'd be able to tell the difference between a vulva and a penis. When it came time, it was SO obvious that we are having a boy! The tech had already shown us the umbilical cord over the course of the exam, and it looked so different from the rest of the baby, like a very different shade of gray on the screen, and I was definitely sure I was looking at boy parts. :)

jenden1978 |

What’s the chance baby’s gender could be wrong?

I had a 3D Ultrasound done at 19 weeks and 6 days, and it was obvious it was a girl. Then I had my 20 week ultrasound at 20 weeks and 4 days, and they also said girl. It's just the position the baby is in to be able to tell for certain. Fortunately, she had her legs wide open for the technicians!

What’s the chance baby’s gender could be wrong?

I have a cousin who had twins she was high risk so she ended up having a total of 6 ultrasounds, the first was too early to predict gender but the last 5 times they told her definitely identical twin girls. She ended up bringing home identical twin boys to a whole lot of pink EVERYTHING! For this reason I decided to wait and be surprised both with our daughter and this time around because I would rather just plan to be surprised at birth than be surprised unexpectedly at birth! Especially since I've not been high risk so have only had/expect to have 1 ultrasound each time where it was even possible to determine gender.

My brother was told they were having a girl. They picked out the name Madison. Then she was born... but WAIT... It was a boy! For some reason he had gotten a tattoo of the initials (excited first time father-to-be), They had to get creative quickly and come up with a name that had the same initials. Bad idea. I'm 38 weeks. We were told we're having a girl. We saw the girl parts at 20 weeks. We pretty much got everything neutral anyway... I'm not a fan of pink!
