The Bump Expert

Try photographing your belly every month in the same spot and then you can put the images together. If you have an interesting dream during your pregnancy, think about using it as inspiration for a photograph. Are you craving certain foods? Add them into your photo. Are you having issues with your pregnancy, like extreme exhaustion? Photograph it. You are the artist here and now it is your turn to make a photo that not only is of your belly, but that imparts some other information about where you are emotionally, physically, and mentally during your last trimester. The pregnant body is beautiful; capture the memory. You only have nine months.

Every month my fiance and I take a photo of only my belly and one with him kissing my baby bump. I love it! It shows that he is just as happy and excited about this child as I am!

Q&A: Tips for taking fun maternity photos?

i'm in a lucky position as well; i work in a photography studio, with two other very talented photographers... my plan of action is to just ask them (as friends) to take pictures for me, and those will be the 'professional' pics... i'm also going to ask my fiancee (a budding photographer himself) and other close friends and family to take their own versions of a baby bump photo. i'll just hand them a digital camera and let them have at it! then, i'll mount and bind them all together into a book that our little one can have when she gets a little older! :D

use little items that you plan to use for baby once he/she arrives. I am a professional photographer and have suggested my clients use little shoes, onesies, a pink or blue ribbon tied around belly with a tag saying baby name or expected due date or just plain ribbon. I have had people personalize it, instead of just added shoes, add converse that they had personalized for baby, or a blanket that mom or dad used when he/she was a baby, that you plan to use for baby when they arrive. What's neat about doing that, is if you get newborn pictures after baby is born, you can use some of the same items in the pictures again.

My problem is I am a professional & prefer to edit my own photos but want someone who knows what they are doing. If only I could find another professional who would allow me to edited them myself.

Q&A: Tips for taking fun maternity photos?

I painted my belly with nontoxic washable paint. I did a few different drawings of things that meant something to me during my pregnancy. Like we painted a picture of a box with a bow because I felt like my baby was present from God and did another one with her name on my belly. It was really fun and creative and made for some very colorful photos.

My Fiance and I are completely gutting and renovating our home right now. We got pushed extremely behind schedual so now we are feeling the pressure because the baby is due in two months. I plan on taking pictures in the house. I think we will look back on it and laugh.

Q&A: Tips for taking fun maternity photos?

I am going to have a friend that is a photographer come to my home and take the photo's. We are going to have our baby dog (11 year old Lab.) in some of the photo's. I am due in early January so I am going to have her come in early December. I think it will be really nice since the house will be decorated..and personal since it is our home instead of a studio. Also I do want some outside...it doesn't snow a lot where we live...so I am hoping for a snowy December!

I am so glad that someone asked this question. Because I have seen some of my friend's pictures and I wasn't really impressed. But I love all of these creative ideas. We are still a few months out from doing this, but reading these made me more excited!!

Q&A: Tips for taking fun maternity photos?

We are doing ours in a location that is very personal and meaningful for us. In our case, my hometown is Auburn, AL and both my husband and I are Auburn University graduates, and this is where we met while we were in college. So we are going back to Auburn, and taking pictures in front of Samford Hall, which is a beautiful, old, historic landmark with an old clock tower on Auburn University's campus. We are also going to take some shots in other historic locations around campus. A dear friend of mine is taking the photos for us. She is talented and has a great camera, but just does photography on the side for fun. We are saving a lot of money by using a friend instead of a "professional," but I think the pics will turn out great. She has suggested using blue sidewalk chalk to write our baby boy's name on the sidewalk and taking pics both sitting/standing on the sidewalk. I think that will be a cute idea! We are also using onesies/booties as props, as someone mentioned earlier, and we have had them monogrammed with Auburn University's logo and our son's name.

The trick is to make it personal, relevant to you and your partner...that way it will most likely, ALWAYS be original! You can always do the name in blocks or the bow or the ultrasound picture in front of the belly or the hands in a heart over the belly, but dont rule out possibly flowers from your wedding bouquet (reproduced of course) over your belly, or maybe an item that represents mom and one that represents dad, and draping them over the baby bump, in black and white. Be original by staying true to you. And most of all...HAVE FUN WITH IT!

Q&A: Tips for taking fun maternity photos?

We did a very funny for my first. I was craving green olives and we put a jar in a glass box and made it look like I was running torwads them (war face and all) with an ax to break the box while my husband "held me back" :) We did some nice ones too, but this one was the best.

I think that if you talk to a video production NYC center maybe they can make great photos for you.I am curious if you want to take this photos before, while or after you give birth.

Q&A: Tips for taking fun maternity photos?

I'm really into fashion, so my photographer is making my pictures look sort of editorial...really edgy, not the typical photos. My husband is also not a picture person, so I'm doing one shot in one of his white suit shirts with heels. Likely no one will see this shot, but him. I also make him run out and get me those Magnum ice cream bars all the time so I think I might incorporate one of those in my shoot too.

My cousin is an aspiring photographer and is really great at it! I am excited to have photos taken and help my cousin out with her portfolio. Plus she is giving me a great deal, I just cant afford a professional right now.
