Is it safe to spray tan while pregnant?

Re: Is it safe to spray tan while pregnant?

The Bump Expert

Spray tanners or sunless tanners contain dihydroxyacetone, or DHA, which may be absorbed into your bloodstream either through your skin or by inhaling the spray. The effects of DHA on the pregnancy are simply not known -- but it hasn't been proven to be safe in pregnancy. My general advice is to avoid it until it has been proven to cause no harm.

re: Q: Spray tanning safe?

What about tanning beds? I know they are not safe for my skin but any proof that they harm the baby?

lbeezy |

re: Q: Spray tanning safe?

I'm gonna say, unsafe. Haven't you ever heard the myth of someone being locked in the tanning bed and her insides burning? Don't do it.

mrsrecon1126 |

re: Q: Spray tanning safe?

That is why they call it a myth...I have to say, insides don't burn, you can't get locked in, and it's fine. People lay out in the sun on the beach. Tanning beds are simply a portion of the rays the sun puts out - And is better for you than the sun!

re: Q: Spray tanning safe?

Tanning beds aren't safe. The bulbs that are used are whats harmful to the baby, not the light.

haleyw458 |

re: Q: Spray tanning safe?

I'd Say not safe, i'd worry about the chemicals being absorbed into the skin and body and possibly affecting the baby. Even the slightest chance of a bad effect is NOT worth it.

Nicki1979 |

re: Q: Spray tanning safe?

it's unsafe to spray tan or lay in a tanning bed regardless if you're pregnant or not...the bulbs are UV light which can be very harmful to baby!

togetheratlast |

re: Q: Spray tanning safe?

My doc said it isn't the bulbs or the light its the fact that your body gets so warm and that while YOU can adjust to the heat your baby has no internal adjusments and it can have an affect on their nerve development. Kind of the same as going in a hot tub.

re: Q: Spray tanning safe?

any thoughts on Jergens tanning lotion?

lbeezy |

re: Q: Spray tanning safe?

UV rays in lights from tanning beds or excessive sun exposure can alter the DNA in every cell of your body. Not only is it unsafe during pregnancy, but it has the potential to alter the DNA that is passed on to any unconceived child through your ovum (egg) cells. The information about adjusting to the hot environment is also correct.

re: Q: Spray tanning safe?

to lbeezy, jergens tanning lotion is good if it is applied evenly, I used it before prom and for a while before my wedding. It does give you a soft glow and darkens your skin subtlely. About safety, I'm sure it is bc it's only lotion. It's good stuff

troutysgirl12 |

re: Q: Spray tanning safe?

Obviously I was joking about getting locked in. But I still say it isn't safe for your skin and especially the baby. I was sad to hear that spray tans aren't safe either since I'm going on a cruise next month for my babymoon. I will have to use the lotion as some of you suggested. Thanks!

mrsrecon1126 |

re: Q: Spray tanning safe?

My Dr. said no tanning at all. He said the most sensitive part of your body and whatever you put on your skin can get absorbed by the baby, so better safe than sorry and wait until after giving birth!!

Fitz0929 |

re: Q: Spray tanning safe?

Jergen's Lotion has DHA in it too (http://www.jergens.com/Our_Collection/Product_Detail.asp?ProductID=8). Just because something is a lotion, doesn't necessarily make is safe. I used Jergen's natural glow religiously before pregnancy and I was so disappointed to find I couldn't use it while pregnant. Avoiding all tanning products including lotions, spray on tans, and tanning beds while pregnant is probably the wisest course. Pale skin for 9 months is a small price to pay for a healthy baby.

re: Q: Spray tanning safe?

I just read about this sunless tanner that does not contain DHA and it gets great reviews on non streaking and it smells great apparently. I may buy it to try it out. I cannot be pale all winter! My friend did spray tanning twice and use sunless tanner and both babies are in perfect condition! I didnt even think about asking my doctor until I noticed this page!!!!!Fiji Blend BNano Fresh DHA Free Bronzer Tanning Lotion 11.8 oz

re: Q: Spray tanning safe?

I was told that spray tanning was just fine! I have done it a few times while i've been pregnant! I just make sure that I wear a nose plug and use a certain mouth piece that allows me to breath but no intake any of the chemicals!

re: Q: Spray tanning safe?

Uv lights from the sun are more harmful than tanning beds. My professor (male) at college did an extensive research project. I, being interested, found the same facts as him. The heat in the bed is what can be harmful. During my research I called several tanning salons who are board certified and tanning during pregnancy is fine IF your own body temperature does not rise over 100 degrees. They suggest keeping a thermometer in your mouth during your tanning session. I would recommend low pressure beds because they tend to be less heated. High pressure beds tan quick and fast putting out more heat...I'd stay away from the high pressure beds.

re: Q: Spray tanning safe?

I do work for a tanning franchise and the UV in the tanning beds are going to be better than outdoors because it is controlled. However, the reason why doctors advise not to tan is because of the heat factor. I have not used any of our products and I plan on checking out the DHA free sunless product for my out of town work trips!

re: Q: Spray tanning safe?

Ladies! If you have to ask then its probably not safe, not to mention that your gut is telling you that tanning is uncool. Orange is out, pale is in!

re: Q: Spray tanning safe?

I am getting ready to go on a caribbean vacation and I don't mine being white as a ghost. It is healthier all the way around prego or not. Don't get me wrong I was a life gaurd and was very tan all summer long for about 10 years. I don't like the things that are on my hands now because of it. I am only 33 years old and have old ladies hands. A little color is ok when not prego but no color for me while i am prego.

re: Q: Spray tanning safe?

Well, I think we all know that tanning in general whether inside or outside is not good for your skin. While you are pregnant, you do not want your body to reach over 102 degrees, which is the real reason why you shouldn't tan period. The obvious is that it can also give you skin cancer - this is not opinion, but a fact. The question, however, is in reference to "spray tanning". Spray tanning does contain chemicals that can be harmful to both you and your baby, but I don't think it compares to the damage you can do by actually tanning from a bed or sun. Just use caution when inhaling the fumes and do what you can not to breathe it in. I would say that you should only go 1 x every 2 weeks if you need to. Doctors are going to tell you both aren't good for you b/c they don't want to be held responsible if something ends up being wrong with your baby once it is born - that is their job!

re: Q: Spray tanning safe?

tanning beds are safe for the baby as long as you dont get overheated. doctors recommend only going 5-10minutes at a time. overheating can cause damage to nerves and spinal cord development in the baby. dont be in the bed for long and make sure a fan is on. a stand up bed is even recommended so you are not laying down on your back. every doctor is different so ask your doctor. uv rays will not go into your baby!! spray tans are fine as well. i do both and know people who do both and their kids are just fine!! ps. you can color your hair too!!

Q&A: Is it safe to spray tan while pregnant?

My doctor said I could go tanning in moderation as long as I was not overheating, and also that spray tanning is fine... :o)

Q&A: Is it safe to spray tan while pregnant?

Consider this, tanning beds have fans to keep your internal temperature down and if done properly in small increments you don't burn or get overheated. Burning causes skin cancer and should be avoided and overheating is bad for baby...so it is better to have a base tan that you achieved without burning and overheating than spend one afternoon in the real sun where you get scorched. Not to mention the positive effects tan skin can have on your own body image and a momma with positive feelings about her appearance is a healthy momma. If you feel like you look like frumpy and it causes you anxiety, baby feels that. In many cases people tan to clear up acne, reduce the appearance of cellulite or just to de-stress mentally. Taking care of your appearance isn't selfish! It's good for your marriage/relationship, your mental health and your baby. I'm expecting my second child and I tan for ten minutes once or twice a week in an air conditioned bed and use a self tanning spray in my well ventilated bathroom, with the fan on every ten days. Moderation and consideration is the key...just like all things in in parenting. If people sound pushy or extreme my best advice is to take two steps back and consider the other side of the story. The answer probably lies somewhere in between.

Q&A: Is it safe to spray tan while pregnant?

There is nothing saying that it is unsafe during pregnancy but I wouldn't do it just to be on the safe side. I wouldn't want to put my baby at risk just because I'm too worried about a stupid fake tan.

Q&A: Is it safe to spray tan while pregnant?

i spoke with my ob about tanning in a tanning bed and the concern there is harmful rays but more importantly the heat factor, you dont go in hot tubs cause of heat and you should avoid the beds for the same reason...even suntanning outside is dangerous due to the heat, not the tan itself. stay hydrated and keep your body cool, you want your baby to be healthy not cooking in your tummy :) ( im sad about this but the baby is worth my pale skin )

Q&A: Is it safe to spray tan while pregnant?

What you dont like being pasty white while with child?? hahahaha Just Kidding. I have spoke to my OB as well as done a ton of research about this topic....... I have found out that @ TanPro their Mystic Tan is all natural so there are no worries of the chemicals!!!! So it might be something to look into and asking the tanning salons in your area??

lilmama04 |

Q&A: Is it safe to spray tan while pregnant?

I had heard that the bulbs in tanning beds can rise your internal body temperature too high (equiv to a fever) and that can harm your baby. I'd stay away from tanning beds. As far as a sunless tanner goes... I'd say that it's probably ok in moderation just like most things.

Q&A: Is it safe to spray tan while pregnant?

I spoke with my OBGYN today about tanning and he gave me the pregnancy hotline to call because he wasn't sure. I spoke with a lady on the hotline and she said that spray tans ARE SAFE in any part of your pregnancy. It does NOT get absorbed into the blood stream. She also said that tanning in a bed is alos safe as long as you do not overheat, 5 to 10 mins max, depending on the strength of the bulbs, and no tingle lotions. The hotline's number is 1-800-822-2229

mallarym |

Q&A: Is it safe to spray tan while pregnant?

Okay, so I'm really confused now... Supposedly the DHA in the spray tans is what's unsafe. Aren't any of you taking a DHA supplement like EXPECTA or anything like that??? My OB recommended that I start taking this at my first prenatal visit and continue taking it all the way through breastfeeding. DHA is used to support brain and eye development in unborn and newborn babies. So, what's the deal???

Q&A: Is it safe to spray tan while pregnant?

I managed a tanning salon for three years and I would definitely not recommend any UV tanning during pregnancy. However, spray tanning is TOTALLY different. I would say 50% of our clientele for the spray tan was pregnant women. We used formulas safe for pregnant women and it was a huge hit! I use to do the spray tan once every two weeks and I LOVED it :)

hldfrost |

Q&A: Is it safe to spray tan while pregnant?

it is 100% unsafe to tan in a tanning bed when pregnant, they are not just sun rays, tanning beds emit UVA & UVB rays. You have to imagine tanning beds are an accelerated tan & it is not recommended to layout either when youre pregnant because you dont want your body to overheat & your body temp to rise. Tanning in the tanning beds is the worst thing you can do & also tanning beds are not supposed to even allow pregnant women.

Q&A: Is it safe to spray tan while pregnant?

Yeah I was told that you can go in tanning beds for like no more then 10 mins at a time, its not the bulbs or the rays or the light, its simply the fact that you cant overheat yourself, your body temp should not hit 102 because thats the point that causes any damage or concern. just like hot baths and hot tubs. but still there will be a point when you just wont be able to fit in the tanning bed. or be able to get out without falling over or breaking it. ha

AletaBonita |

Q&A: Is it safe to spray tan while pregnant?

The Lady that owns the salon I tan at will not allow pregnant women to tan. The bulbs are not harmful whatsoever, it is the fact that you are heating your body quickly, just like getting into a hottub... Also spray tanning, even though not proven harmful, is not allowed because of the chemicals that absorb into your skin and potentially entering your bloodstream are not proven safe. once again, While tanning is not proven harmful, it has not been proven safe either.

kateb5126 |

Q&A: Is it safe to spray tan while pregnant?

This is not really a question that is debatable. Tanning alone causes skin cancer and is awful for you skin, all of the time. Not just if you get burnt or don't build a base tan, that is ridiculous. Cancer is cancer is cancer regardless of whether you were burnt or not. The heat factor and rise in temperature is also correct and a fan in your bed won't prevent that. Your skin type and health and genetics all determine how tanning will affect you individually. Some people do fare better than others. With that being said, "Probably safe" and "Not Proven" are ridiculous standards to use to judge the safety of a product for your child. Your life is no longer about you but about your baby. Don't take chances with a baby.

graysamanthaj |

Q&A: Is it safe to spray tan while pregnant?

There are signs in almost every tanning bed room I've seen that explicitly says if you are pregnant, DO NOT USE A TANNING BED due to possible harm to you or your unborn baby. So why risk it? By a little self-tanner, which does not have the DHA that spray tanning has and do rub it on at home.
