Q&A: Pregnancy weight gain?

I hardly gained anything in the first trimester but now I’m putting on about a pound a week. Is that okay?

Re: I hardly gained anything in the first trimester but now I’m putting on about a pound a week. Is that okay?

The Bump Expert

Absolutely. The second trimester tends to mark the end of morning sickness, and the beginning of a much bigger appetite. Your body is also taking cues from baby, who is growing fast -- and growing hungrier! There are some basic guidelines to how much and how fast you should put on the pounds, but don't worry if the rate you gain at varies. Try to keep it in the four-pounds-a month-range, and you’ll be fine. That said, now that you're in the second trimester, it’s time to pay closer attention to what you eat (and what you should avoid).

re: Q: Putting on the Pounds?

How much should we gain by this point? Doctors I think have unreal expectations...

Q: Cute maternity clothes?

I feel exactly the same way. I am 4 months now and i am at the stage where noone really can tell im pregnant but i just look like im getting fat - haha. Most of my clothes are getting too snug for me to be able to wear them for any length of time. What i would suggest for you to do is maybe still shop in the "regular" clothes but go with shirts/dresses etc that are loose in the stomach and give you some room to grow. Even if you opt to go with maternity pants you can still prob get away with wearing regular shirts for awhile before you have to go full blown maternity!

re: Q: Putting on the pounds?

I am at 21 weeks, I have gained 12 lbs which the doctor's said was good, my doctor's told me .5 lbs a week and I have been eating exactly the same(maybe more frutis and veggies) BUT MOSTLY THE SAME! None of my pants fit me and I bought three pairs of maternity pants that fit great! All of my weight is in my tummy! The myth is true for me! We are having a BOY!

re: Q: Putting on the pounds?

I'm 27 weeks along and have gained about 30 pounds already. I still eat alot of veggies and fruit, but just can't seem to slow the eating or gaining. The holidays really hurt, and the fact that I can't work out the way I would if I weren't pregnant. Is anyone gaining as much as I am?

Jacqwalton |

re: Q: Putting on the pounds?

Yes Jacqwalton someone else is right there with you. I started out as a very medium sized girl. I am short so it seems like its just all compacted. I have gained probably about 30 the whole pregnancy and I am almost 27 weeks. I eat fairly healthy, and was never over weight. It seems like half of it has gone to be Face though which is a realy self confidance killer. Either way... You are not alone.

re: Q: Putting on the pounds?

Jacqwalton and newTxmommy!! I am in your boat! I am 27 weeks now, and have gained 31 lbs. I eat well, drink tons of water, and accumulate the lbs faster than anyone else... my chin has noticed, and I don't like it! My OB said so far nothing to be concerned about, everything is healthy and well with baby... just not my thighs...

re: Q: Putting on the pounds?

I also have been told that I am gaining too much weight.. it really frustrated me.. my doc even sent me in for my glucose test early.. but I got results today and my sugar is excellent. Im not quite sure where all my poundage is going but Im definately gaining more than 4 lbs a month!! Glad to know Im not the only one!!

re: Q: Putting on the pounds?

I am now 16 weeks pregnant and I have only gained 1 pound so far. At my appt. I hadn't gained any weight but my doctor said that was fine because I should only gain a total of 20 - 30 pounds. My stomach does stick out a little more though. I have gained 2 inches in that area. I think it's from the stretching and a little bit of being bloated. I can't suck it in as much anymore. Since my pants are a lower rise all my clothes still fit.

re: Q: Putting on the pounds?

Oh, I'm huge and have gained 28 lbs at 21 weeks! People think I'm having twins, but it's just one little boy in there. I feel great (other than looking fat) and continue to go to the gym and yoga 4 times a week. My doctor hasn't said anything about me gaining too much weight yet. It's mainly my friends and family who are just amazed at my size and making me feel like I am abnormally large. I'm praying that I have put most of my weight on upfront and it perhaps levels out from here....could just be wishful thinking though.

during my first trimester and second trimester, I gained 6 lbs (except for my 6th monht- I gained 6 lbs!). I am hopping I will not gain more than 2 pound this month :)

re: Q: Putting on the pounds?

I am huge, I am 22 weeks and have gained 22 lbs, I have been given hell from my doctor since my first appointment, she even sent me to see a nutrionist but no once can seem to come to any conclusion except that maybe I have a slow metabolism. I eat healthy and I workout moderatly at least 3 days a week. I'm done stressing over it. all my tests are normal and the baby is doing great.

re: Q: Putting on the pounds?

I'm 16wks and have already gained about 14lb. This happened during my first pregnancy too--I gained 51lb total last time, despite eating a very healthy diet and exercising 3-4x/wk. Lack of morning sickness meant the calories were sticking with me too. My doctor is not at all concerned because she knows I'm doing what is healthy for the baby, despite the extra pounds, and she said, "There will be plenty of time to worry about losing the weight AFTER the baby is born!"Just to give you all some hope, I lost ALL 51lb from my first pregnancy, most of it by the time my son was 6 mo old (the rest before his 1st bday). Do the best you can and remember that numbers on the scale are all relative, and it's TEMPORARY. As long as you're not going overboard with sweets or overall calories, you'll be just fine, and so will baby. :)

re: Q: Putting on the pounds?

MOODYPEACH that was the nicest more informative and reassuring post! Everyone is so nervous (myself included) especially since for some of us it is our first pregnancy! I have gained 20lbs and am 16 weeks...my doctor is not happy with it but I already know I have a slow metabolism. And the truth is that no matter what the doctors and family say, you know your body best...so you have to be your own doctor and just make sure that they are making sure that your baby and you are in good health. Thanks! And I hope I get to lose all the weight as quickly as you did!!!

re: Q: Putting on the pounds?

Last time I went to the OB at 24 weeks i had gained 18lbs and she me to watch what I was eating. Honestly I think I have not changed my eating habits just eating more fiber and I walk a lot. I gained 4lbs this month after even watching what I eat more closely. I do not look huge but at this rate I am looking at gaining 35 total. Which I thought was normal. I feel that this is the time in my life that I should not be terrified of getting on the scale but I am.

re: Q: Putting on the pounds?

omg I feel so much better. @ 27 weeks I've gained 30 or so pounds and the nurse kept going on and on and on about how that was way too much weight and to ignore my cravings and everything. I'm eating decently well, and I thought the weight was more so from swelling. But she made me feel horrible and scared to eat anymore that day(which sucked because I was hungry when I left the office) My doctor didn't really have much to say on it, except that hey, I was gaining weight...I'm still scared to enjoy food in truth!

I am 24 weeks with twins. So far, Ive gained 30 lbs, feel like Im about to pop!Remember: Its sooo much better to gain a little bit more weight than NOT ENOUGH! We all want healthy babies and trying to cut calories to stay trim is not a good idea when your pregnant (At least thats what I tell myself when Im enjoying ANOTHER bowl of ice cream and berries;))

re: Q: Putting on the pounds?

Man, I wish I could gain weight, I'm 22 weeks and after losing 15 pounds the first trimester can't gain anything. But trust me, it's no better to be on this side of the spectrum, all my OB does is accuse me of not eating even though I'm putting away enough food for someone twice my size... but what comes down must go up?

re: Q: Putting on the pounds?

I'm 27 weeks pregnant and have gained 11lbs. I have had girlfriends tell me they gained 50 to 100 lbs with their 1st kids, so I think that kinda scared me from over indulging. I think you shouldn't worry about the weight gain as long as you know your eating healthy. The baby needs it, and thats what really matters.

re: Q: Putting on the pounds?

Geez...I went to the doctor today and went from not gaining a pound for the first three months to gaining 11 in my fourth month!! The nurse did a double take. How's that for a confidence booster? I'm just going to assume that my body is making up for lost time, not gaining anything in the beginning. I definitely feel heavier in the belly region and I FINALLY look like I'm pregnant!

re: Q: Putting on the pounds?

Ok, so explain this to me... I'm just shy of 28 weeks, I quit smoking the MOMENT I found out I was pregnant, so I was expected to put on weight. I've gained 25 lbs total so far AND I'm gestational diabetic. My Dr's nurse has stated I'm gaining too much weight!... What the heck! Am I truly putting on too much weight?

re: Q: Putting on the pounds?

I'm 16 weeks, lost 2 lbs to morning sickness in the first trimester. Gained them back plus 2 or 3 more. I'm eating healthy and often throughout the day but am worried because now I feel less hungry than last month, where I was eating everything in sight (and of course later barfing it all back up). I'm scared the baby isn't thriving, but I can't eat if i'm not hungry!

BSypolt12 |

re: Q: Putting on the pounds?

My doctor won't even tell me how much I weigh. She even told me to stay away from my scale at home. She said she would inform me if I was gaining too much weight. Now I'm at 27 weeks, and no mention of it. But I did glance at the scale last time I went in at about 23 weeks and I have gained about 30 lbs already. My mom yells at me all the time about not worrying about it. Every woman is different as well as every baby. My suggestion would be to not look at the numbers :)

re: Q: Putting on the pounds?

Ok, so I guess I am right on schedule here. I'm 16 weeks along, and it seems that just two weeks ago I woke up and there was the bump! I tried to suck it in and stand up really straight, but people at work noticed. Even customers who had never seen me before could tell. I'm still kind of sensitive about it, but it's getting better. My doctor said I'm right on time, but my mother keeps telling me I'm just fat. She's always told me that, though, even though I've never been over 125lbs until now. I've only gained about a pound so far, though. But it looks like I've gained more. I don't know if it's all just shifting to my belly or what. I think my butt and legs are giving up some weight to my belly. That would be a good thing, right?

re: Q: Putting on the pounds?

wow, i am shocked that i haven't gained more at this point. i am 27 weeks and have only gained 5lbs. i am not complaining, just shocked. i gained 70lbs with my first pregnancy (twins) and it feels GREAT to not be retaining everything i drink. :)

Q&A: Pregnancy weight gain?

I was a normal weight/ BMI and very active before I became pregnant. Not skinny, but fit. I lost about 4 pounds in the first trimester due to morning sickness, but now, at 15 weeks am back to my pre-pregnancy weight. I am hoping that I gain moderately and steadily over the next few months, but I am definitely less active after a couple of months of feeling so sick. I know I need to keep exercising and eating healthily and I will feel good no matter how much I gain.

joannamroddy |

Q&A: Pregnancy weight gain?

I am 20 weeks and I have gained 10lbs. I already do not feel good in my skin. I feel swollen. I'm hoping that because I am 1/2 way there that I will only gain 10-15 more lbs. I do agree with a lot of the posts that say it really does not matter how much we all gain because each body will handle pregnancy differently.

KathleenSander |

Q&A: Pregnancy weight gain?

Before I got pregnant, I weighed about 114-116 lbs. (I'm 5'6"). I exercised often, but mostly I just didn't eat all that much and counted calories and didn't eat sweets, etc. I think I was probably underweight when I got pregnant, so I'm trying very hard to eat enough for the baby, but to only gain as much as is needed. I've eaten a lot more desserts since I got pregnant, though not every day, and I eat every time I'm hungry, and I've increased my exercising to about 30 min. a day (sometimes a little longer). I've gained about 7-8 lbs. so far and the Dr. says that that's good and I'm right on track. Plus, since I weighed less to begin with, I know I may have to gain more to make up for it. I kind of feel lost as far as how much I should weigh, and it's hard to think of gaining as good, even though I know it is. It helps to see the little belly and know it's all for the baby!

Q&A: Pregnancy weight gain?

I'm 16 weeks and I have gained 10 lbs so far. Two weeks ago I felt fine but lately I've been feeling fat. Mainly because I've always gone up and down the scale, but now this is the heaviest I've every been. My bump is just starting to show now and I had to buy maternity pants today. I'm afraid I'm gaining too quickly. Especially reading some of these posts!

Q&A: Pregnancy weight gain?

I´m 16 weeks today and I´ve only gained two pounds so far. I couldn´t believe it because my belly really seems to stick out a lot. I´ve always weighed between 138 and 140 and when I first went to the doctor at 6 weeks I weighed 134 and now i´m at 136. It seems like I weigh less than ever. My pants are definitely getting uncomfortable because of the belly growth and I´m definitely starting to look pregnant.

I'm 16 weeks and my doctor is fussing because I have only gained two pounds so far! I was jus as much in shock and concerned as she was. Since the moment i found out y doctor told me to gain at least 25 lbs throughout the entire pregnancy but that seems to be a hard goal to reach as of right now! My stomach is rounding ad the baby is fine...that's my only concern!

Q&A: Pregnancy weight gain?

I am currently 17 weeks and I have already gained 12 pounds. Everyone tells me I've gained to much, but you can't tell i've put on any weight. The only place I can see it went is to my belly and my breast. I try not to eat to many meals a day and if i eat and get hungry again i eat some fruit or something. I'm scared that I will gain to much weight and since i've gotten older i won't be able to lose it back. Because with my other two i gained around 35 to 40 lbs, but a month later it just went away and i was back to my pre-pregnancy size

Q&A: Pregnancy weight gain?

I went in at 11 weeks and I had gained 10 pounds in 6 weeks! I told the doctor my stomach felt sick all the time and to make it better I ate. I never "threw up" but just felt nauseated, and eating made me feel better. She told me to eat a little less, but what I was doing was okay. After I thought about it, I workout all the time before I got pregnant to loose weight and I had to workout to keep weight off. That is how my body works. Then I became pregnant, tired and exhausted so I stopped working out altogether. It made since to me why I gained so much weight. When I was once active, and suddenly stopped, and the extra food. Now I am in my 13th week, feeling better, and I am working out again, moderately. Hopefully that will help! I go in again next week. Good luck everyone, and just don't stress about the weight.

Q&A: Pregnancy weight gain?

ladies, i gained 63 pounds in my first pregnancy. i'm 5'11 and weighed 143 when i got pregnant. all but 10 of that had come off by the time my first baby was 5 months old. gradually more came off but i held onto about 5 extra until i was done nursing. every woman's body is different! i delivered a healthy baby, ate well and worked out and still had gained that much. this time i'm 16 weeks and have gained around 15 lbs. my new doc mentioned something to me about it, but i let her know that this is what my body does. now she leaves me alone. don't let other people alarm you, everyone runs into that one rude person or two who makes dumb, insensitive comments about having twins or whatever. just ignore them and focus on feeding your baby healthy foods. and for the women who are scared to eat, do NOT starve yourself! if you are hungry, your baby is starving! i've seen too many babies born with health issues because the moms were dieting while pregnant. not good. and then for the ones who just aren't gaining weight. if you're eating healthily, a little extra calories and taking care of yourself; your body will do what it needs to do to nourish your little one. don't let people make you feel insecure because your belly isn't as big as they think it should be. your body will do what it needs to. i have a friend who has had two perfectly healthy little boys and only gained 15 pounds total with each of them. it just happens and is usually in your genes. stay positive, feel good in your skin and send happy vibes to that little baby in your belly! stressing won't help anything!

Q&A: Pregnancy weight gain?

I am at 16 weeks. At my 12 week appointment I hadn't gained any weight and in fact had lost .5 lbs. I went to the doctors yesterday and weighed in. The scale said I had gained ten lbs. However the last time I weighted in, I was wearing a sundress and flip flops. This time I had on boots, corduroys and a sweater since the weather had changed. I weighted myself that morning when got up - I had gained only 4.5 lbs since the beginning. However, my doctor gave me a "talking to" saying I need to watch the weight gain. It made me feel really bad about myself. I have only gained 4.5 lbs in 16 weeks of pregnancy. Even if I had gained the 10, I still think that is pretty reasonable and doesn't warrent a speech that makes you feel bad.

Q&A: Pregnancy weight gain?

I am at 16 weeks and I have only gained about 3 pounds. I am 5.7 and before I got pregnant I was "underweight". Gaining this weight does freak me out, but I know I need too. I felt really bad that I had only gained 3 pounds but my OB told me that it was fine and a lot of my weight gain will happen in the last trimester. Since I have been pregnant I have had the most sedentary lifestyle (headaches and nausea) which I thought would increase my weight, but surprisingly it has not. I have made a personal decision to ignore the scale and let my body do what it needs to do wether I gain the weight like I am supposed to by the book, don't gain much at all, or gain to much. We are all different and what applies to me and my baby might not be what your body needs for you and your baby. This is a beautiful time ladies and no matter how gross and unattractive you may feel your baby is going to make it all worth it in the end.

I am 16 weeks and so far I have gained 11 pounds. My doc hasn't said anything. I know that most of that 11 pounds is water weight, my legs and fingers are already puffy. I too work on my feet, so I'm going to try out my maternity compression hose tonight. We'll see if I have relief after work. Q&A: Pregnancy weight gain?

I'm coming up on 17 weeks with twins, and it appears that I've gained about 15 lbs. I didn't really have morning sickness, so the calories stayed with me also. Q&A: Pregnancy weight gain?

Pregnancy and weight loss.... I am about 16 weeks and have lost 12 lbs. More if you talk to the doctor. I was told to only gain 15 lbs during my whole pregnancy. I have had no morning sickness, and have started eating 5 or 6 times a day. I have gone up two sizes in bras (so I know those weigh more) and dropped sizes in some pants, while going up in others. Would like to remind everyone that if you breastfeed the weight comes off faster. Those women who breast feed need an extra 500-600 calories per day. It naturally helps rid your body of the fat stores it creates during pregnancy. Good luck everyone!!!

Q&A: Pregnancy weight gain?

I am 16 weeks preg and have gained about 22 lbs. My doc told me normal would be 25-30 lbs - well how is that going to work now? I am so disapointed that I gained so much so quickly! First trimenster I was STARVING all the time. I know how to eat right and have been trying very hard to do so but some of the healthy things just sounded so nasty to me ! Thank god this timester I'm not as hungry all the time. I work out at least 4 hours a week -lifting weights ect. (all my normal before prego stuff). I used to be very obese - I have lost 120 lbs in the past two years. I have to believe that my body recognizes/remembers how to be fat. That 20 plus pounds is definately in my belly - from my boobs down I am sticking out big time!

Q&A: Pregnancy weight gain?

I am 16 weeks and I've lost about 10 lbs due to nausea, some vomitting (although not as much as you'd think!), and food aversions (I can't even look at steak, and can eat only really tiny quantities of poultry). The doctor hasn't been concerned yet, probably b/c I was slightly overweight to begin with, but we'll see at my next appointment how she feels. Somehow I've been showing for over a month and am in maternity clothes, though, so go figure! At least there's that! As a result of my weight concerns, I've been reading lots of articles from medical experts. For those of you that are gaining weight fast, if you're eating a good amount of protein in the first half of your pregnancy, what might happen (i.e. statistically) is you might go a bit early - this isn't bad, it's basically that the baby is able to "cook" faster because it's getting so many good nutrients early on. Conversely, those of you who are ending up on a "low protein" diet will probably end up going full term or even a little late. It doesn't seem like either way is something to worry about - nature somehow figures out how to grow a baby in all sorts of circumstances. Also, I recommend that everyone read The Girlfriend's Guide to Pregnancy - while it's not written by an expert, the author has drawn conclusions from all of the pregnancies she's experienced (or witnessed in others) that no matter how much weight you gain, you'll tend to do the "9 months in, 9 months out" rule - which is that whatever weight you gained during the pregnancy you will lose within 9 months after the pregnancy - barring any unhealthy habits after delivery.

I am 25 weeks and I have gained 25 pounds so far. I had morning sickness but I was starving all the time in my first trimester. I was also a smoker before getting pregnant. As soon as I found out I was pregnant I quit. So now I am eating at times I usually had a cigarette. Which means I am eating 3 meals a day plus a snack instead of 2 meals a day. Before when I was hungry I had a cigarette instead, now I can't or won't.

Q&A: Pregnancy weight gain?

I'm 22 weeks pregnant with my first child and at my last doctor's appointment we found that I had lost two pounds, putting me below my pre-pregnancy weight. Q&A: Pregnancy weight gain?

I am 20 weeks and I've probably gained a little but less than 20 pounds. My doctor hasn't said anything about my weight yet, though. Just one comment about how "Everyone has gained weight this time!" when he was checking out my chart (guess he was having some trouble with some patients not gaining). Anyway, all my weight gain has been in my stomach. My butt is pretty much the same size, but legs are the same size, my arms are the same size, and my face looks the same. But, I lost sight of my feet at only 16 weeks! My husband's aunt wanted to know if I was having twins! Turns out that, for me at least, the old superstition about carrying boys way out front is true because there's just one little boy in there!

I am 16 weeks, at my 14 week appointment i had only gained 2 lbs. I was also very nasueas and every thing i ate came back up, so she said that was ok. Also, my doctor said that she thinks about 10 lbs during the first 20 weeks is good amount, if you were within your normal weight pre-pregnancy. she said then about a 1lb. a week from there on is ok, making the total of 30 pounds.

Q&A: Pregnancy weight gain?

I'm 16 weeks and am definitely on the heavy side of the spectrum, gaining between 15 and 20 lbs already. Truthfully I do battle with the self esteem sometimes because I'm barely showing at this point, just general chubbiness. I was a very intense exerciser and even though I'm still working out 5x/week, I think that has a little something to do with the extra poundage in addition to having ZERO morning sickness. Gotta just go with the flow and do the best I can.

Q&A: Pregnancy weight gain?

Don't worry. With my first child, I gained 50 lbs, and lost 62 by about month 6. I lost 30 within two weeks of having my little girl. I was constantly starving with my first pregnancy and actually don't feel pregnant at all this time (other than my expanding chest and bump). I am at week 20 and have gained about 15 lbs. I put on 10 lbs in the first trimester thanks to the only food I could stomach (mac n cheese, pasta) and then it slowed down a bit and looks like if I am to keep gaining a pound per week that I will be right on target with 34-35 lbs. The weight WILL come off - but I do want to mention that it would be a good idea to do some exercising during your pregnancy. Prenatal pilates, or other pregnancy approved workouts. It keeps your non-pregnant areas toned and helps during labor & delivery.

Q&A: Pregnancy weight gain?

I am 16 weeks. I gained 10 pounds in my first trimester which was very surprising since I was sick all the time and could hardly eat anything, but my doctor said it was fine. Now that I can eat again, it seems to moving to my belly, but I'm not sure if I have put on anymore weight. I guess I will find out next week at my Dr. appt, but I am also afraid I will gain too much! I am 6ft tall though, so my Dr. said I can get away with gaining more than others.

Q&A: Pregnancy weight gain?

I am 16 weeks today and gained 4 pounds in the first 2 months, then another two over Christmas, which I lost a week later and am still only up 4 pounds. My stomach just "popped" and pants feel tight but otherwise I feel good. I am eating pretty healthy and exercising a few times a week. I guess we'll see how much I gain in the next few month!

Q&A: Pregnancy weight gain?

After reading most of these posts, I have come to the following conclusion: So what? So what if gaining 'to much' weight makes pregnant mom's (and some of our doctors) uncomfortable. It is not about us; Its about our little ones inside. I try to think about each thing I eat in the perspective of " Would I actually feed this to my child?" That sort of mindset changes the whole matter. Im mostly preaching to myself here because I too am, like so many others, terrified of being permently overweight. I worked incredibly hard before I found out about my pregnancy to lose a very stubborn forty pounds. You can imagine my dismay everytime I step on the scale, and see another pound sneak up on me. I walk and exercise in general and I try to incorporate as many healthy food as I can but I never seem to have any energy. And now for a small dose of optimism: My doctor actually looked at me rather smugly at my last appoinment and said " I am going to need you gain more weight, Alison" And im 16 wks and have gained a total of 8lbs. In conclusion, Lets all just be as healthy as our saintiy will allow, happy for our future, and enjoy the only time in our lives where bellies are in style.

Q&A: Pregnancy weight gain?

I think its really crazy that your Drs are hounding some of you women about too much weight gain, the 25-35 ave weight gain is a guide! Every pregnancy is different maybe you need to gain more weight for your body, maybe you dont need to gain that much. its all about the baby! But either way i'd smack my dr if she told me to slow things down. That being said this is my 2nd pregnancy and ive gained more weight sooner this time and am interested to see what the final number ends up being. im healthy eat very clean and chug water, so I know its all healthy weight. Ladies just enjoy your preggers time, 9mo isnt really that long at all its over before you know it! Good luck and good labors everyone!

Q&A: Pregnancy weight gain?

I am 16 weeks and have gained about 8-10 lbs. I have been giving in to carb and ice cream cravings and not working out near as much as I did pre-pregnancy. I think I have gained too much too soon, but my doctor laughed it off and said I was fine! I am trying to workout and eat better so I don't gain more than 35 lbs. total.

Q&A: Pregnancy weight gain?

I am having twin girls, and I am 20 weeks and have gained about 17-18 pounds. I fully expect to gain 50 pounds and am not worried! I know my weight gain is going to increase dramatically here soon...Don't let the doctor worry you, a midwife would tell you that as long as you are eating healthily and exercising that the amount of weight gain isn't of concern (unless they want to test you for gestational diabetes). Your baby NEEDS you to gain fat, expecially for brastfeeding, so don't stress! I'm trying not to, as my thighs continue to grow right along with my babies :)

Q&A: Pregnancy weight gain?

With my first pregnancy, morning sickness kept me from gaining anything until 4 mos and I only gained one pound in month 5. But I gained regularly after that and ended up with a healthy 8 1/2 pound baby girl. With this pregnancy, I had little vomiting and gained 5 lbs in my first three months and 2 lbs in the 4th month, which the doc said is not only normal but excellent. I'm only 15 weeks and already getting stretch marks and strangers wanting to rub my tummy or offer me stories or advice. I saw my belly in the mirror from the side today and flipped. From the top I look fat, but from the side in my bra and undies I look SO preggo. I got another week before my ultrasound, but my in-laws aren't the only ones wondering if I have twins or my due date's off by a month or so.

Q&A: Pregnancy weight gain?

Im 23 weeks along right now, and I had terrible morning sickness up until about 19-20 weeks. I had lost 15 pounds, and between my 4th and 5th month appt I had gained 5 pounds. I got back next week, so we'll see what the verdict is, but I feel like I have a 15 lb leeway because of what I lost, lol. I eat when I feel hungry, but try to make it something healthy or something that will keep me full fora longer time. Good Luck! The dR said everything was fine last time, my baby boy is healthy and growing exactly how he should be! Good luck everyone! =D

Q&A: Pregnancy weight gain?

I'm 29 weeks and have gained 24 lbs. I work out 3-4 days a week and eat relatively healthy (besides the handful of chips and ice cream from time to time lol!) This is my first pregnancy and most of the people I know have gained 50-70 lbs with their first baby. My weight gain has been slow and steady, 1/2 lb-1 lb a week in second trimester. At first my family doctor was telling me to slow down but now he says I'm right on track. I figure as long as I eat right and keep as active as possible then I'm doing all I can for the baby! I don't think we should worry so much!!!

Q&A: Pregnancy weight gain?

My whole first trimester I didn't really gain anything, but maybe a pound. It seemed like once second trimester hit, I gain 5 lbs. every 4 weeks. Last time I went to the doctor I had gained 11 and a half lbs total. I go again next monday, but decided to weigh myself a couple of days ago thinking I wouldn't have gained as much this time since the weather has been nicer and I've been able to get out and walk a lot and stuff. Boy was I wrong! I already gained 5lbs more exactly and it has only been 3 weeks since I went to the doctor. I'm generally a skinny person and I don't think I really look fatter beside my growing belly, but man if I keep going at this rate not to mention I have almost 4 months to go and u gain most weight at the end. Of course my husband has been wonderful and reminds me I'm supposed to be gaining weight and tells me I'm beautiful everyday which helps me feel better, but still...

Q&A: Pregnancy weight gain?

It makes me nervous because I'm 19 weeks going on 20 and I've only gained about 5 lbs max I'd say. My Dr says everything is fine, but I'm a bigger built girl, and I look chubby in the belly rather than a cute prego belly. I find out in a week what the sex of our little one is, and am going to ask her again about the weight. I also haven't been able to feel my child kick yet :( I have a good digestive system and most of the time it's me bubbly because I pass gas soon after, haha. Or my stomach is growling because I get hypoglycemic after 3-4 hrs of not eating and I need some type of carbs or sugar to raise my blood sugar back to normal. I'm waiting to feel this little booger kick! :)

Q&A: Pregnancy weight gain?

16 weeks and a net gain of zero pounds.... thanks to losing 4 when I was around 5 weeks pregnant from an intestinal bug! But I am watching my eating more closely this second time around... I'm not as active as I was the first time around. With my first pregnancy, I was super active, as I worked as a zookeeper full time until 37 weeks, which was lots of manual labor! I ate healthy, and still gained 40 pounds on my 5'2" tall frame! A lot of it is genetics... my mom gained the same amount of weight as me (about 40lbs) with each of her four pregnancies.

Q&A: Pregnancy weight gain?

I am 16 weeks pregnant and have gained 13 pounds since learning that I was pregnant. However, I've gained about 16 pounds from my normal weight. Now I'm 132 pounds. My doctor said it's OK since I'm on the petite side of normal, but I hope that I'm not overdoing it. In my non-pregnant life I am so calorie concious that I have no concept of what normal eating is. So, in this pregnant life I've been eating whenever I've been hungry. It's been a nice change... :-) I am planning to eat more salads and less fried chicken sandwiches with mayonnaise on them though. Even though they taste good I don't think that they're really considered a staple... Also, my goal weight for this pregnancy was 145. So, I need to slow down!

Q&A: Pregnancy weight gain?

I am 23 weeks almost 24 this friday and I am upset about the weight gain, last I checked I was 16 lbs over what I started the pregnancy at, but what upsets me is that because of a wieght room injury at the gym I stoped my workouts right after our wedding and in two months I was another 15 over my trim and fit weight when we got pregnant already so these 31lbs are really slowing me down and instead of feeling like my bump is a baby bump when I sti I feel the roll of fat over the baby bump and I'm nauseated at how fat I look and feel. My mother is especially critical and keeps saying that the bump isn't cute because I am more fat than pregnant. I've struggled with my weight and body image since I was 11 years old and I am really trying to not be /feel upset but somedays it's just very hard if not impossible. NOthing fits, not even the maternity clothes we bought a few weeks ago and our budget is tight so I can't go shopping everytime I feel like it, my bra doesn't fit, the pants are tight, man, I just feel like a whale :-( and I'm always hungry! I do walk and get moving every chance I get and I watch what I eat and drink lots of water, but I've been getting so swollen, bloated and I am not a happy pregnant lady, that's the bottom line. HELP!

Q&A: Pregnancy weight gain?

Olimpita- That makes it even harder when your mom is not offering support. I sure hope your husband is supportive. I am not a first time mom and gained 42 pounds wuith my last 2 pregnancies. This time I was determined to look FIT. Well, I was working out by taking my kids on runs in the stroller. My son had pneumonia 3 times this winter and I ended up spending more time not working out and taking care of him. This was right before I got prego. and I'm taking them out for walk/jogs again but I fear I will gain alot of weight again. PRegnancy is jsut not fun sometimes. Hang in there everone. We are our worst critics =)

Q&A: Pregnancy weight gain?

I'm in my 17th week and have gained 4 lbs so far. Before I even knew I was pregnant, I started to thicken out in my thighs and butt and have been wearing maternity pants (except for one pair of regular jeans and yoga pants) since my 2nd month. I used to be very overweight and about six years ago I lost and have kept off about 80 lbs. This being my first pregnancy, I was very concerned about excessive weight gain considering my history. I found a midwife who was also a nutritionist and have gotten some amazing advice that has really helped me, the baby and has kept weight gain (so far) to a minimum. Most simply put, grains and sugar will cause mom and baby to gain more weight than necessary. I switched out my morning toast for Ezekiel bread which hits way lower on your glycemic index than regular bread. I have been blessed to have a disdain for sweets since the start of my pregnancy-- so I'm not consuming extra calories in that area. Also, a lot of dairy is very high in sugar. Make sure you're getting enough extra calcium in vegetables and/or supplements, but the only diary I eat is sometimes some Greek yogurt or an occasional cup or organic milk when making a smoothie. I know this diet may sound too strict and extreme for some, but if you are very interested in not being overwhelmed with excess weight to lose after the pregnancy, it really does work. I have several friends who have done this using the same midwife and gained minimal weight. Also-- excess carbs increase swelling during your pregnancy, make you more lethargic and make is way more likely that you'll tear during delivery.

Q&A: Pregnancy weight gain?

I'm 23 weeks and 6 days and I started out weighing 115-120 lbs in the beginning of my pregnancy, I went to the doctor last wensday and got weighed and told my ob doctor that I feel like I've gained to much weight now he looked at my chart and then asked if I had rocks in my pockets or something (jokingly) then he said I think the nurse didnt weigh you right so lets do it again.. so we went and weighed me again and it was right the first time.. I now weigh 148lbs so I've gained over 30 pounds now and I'm 24 weeks tomorrow this is my first pregnancy and I have no self confidence what so ever now :( I felt like crying when I left the doctors office, he said thats too much and that I need to walk at least two miles everyday and watch my calorie intake so has this happened to anyone else?? what did you do about it?? I'm really watching what I'm eating now and walking daily 2-3 and 1/2 miles a day, I still feel like crap and depressed about my weight.

Q&A: Pregnancy weight gain?

OK ladies, let me just say that I am so thankful for these boards. I'm 28 weeks and this is the first time I am posting, but I have to say I feel so much better after reading! My Dr. gave me the "slow down" talk because I gained 28 lbs in 28 weeks. I am short, med build, not overweight (till now!) and that comment just devastated me. I was already self conscious about my face and arms getting chunky, but when he said that in front of my husband I just cried I was so embarassed! I work crazy hours, I'm always active & on my feet and I felt like he was calling me a cow, that I'd already gained all the weight I was supposed to gain but I still have 12 weeks to go! It actually sounds, from these boards, that I am pretty much in line with everyone else. Makes me feel better knowing I'm average rather than confiding in my sister, who gained only 20 lbs in both her pregnancies!

Q&A: Pregnancy weight gain?

So I always wanted to lose weight before we got pregnant, but it didn't happen. I'm 16 weeks now and have only gained 2lbs! I'm already a little overweight, but I'm tall, so it evens out, but I'd still never wear a bikini. I was so obsessed that I'd gain a ton of weight, but so far I've been lucky. The first trimester I had no appetite and was ALWAYS nauseas. The second trimester I have an appetite but nothing appeals to me except fruit really. I CRAVVVE turkey sandwiches and it kills me that I can't have them! Hopefully I can keep this weight gain under control!

Q&A: Pregnancy weight gain?

I'm 16 weeks and I've gained about 12lbs so far. My doctor hasn't said anything to me about gaining too much weight and told me everyone is different. I have already jumped from a B to full D in bra size and feel I've gained a lot of weight in my chest. I was also on medications which affected my appetite which I am now off and have attributed a great deal of the weight gain to that. I think 30lbs was unrealistic from the start but am trying to stay around that for total gain.

Q&A: Pregnancy weight gain?

Im 21 weeks and i've gained approximately 20 lbs already. I dont know what weight I started at but I have an average guess. I'm not sure if the extra weight gain has to do with me getting pregnant right after a miscarraige or what but really have ballooned! The doctors said they arent concerned just yet but they are "watching my weight" They advised me to watch what I eat and take a walk everyday. I have been eatting pretty healthy so far so I'm pretty sure the extra weight gain is probably because I wasnt eatting enough before I was pregnant (I was pretty small with a small appetite). I'm not too worried about it, I just hope it wont be too hard to loose afterwards!

Q&A: Pregnancy weight gain?

Seriously, as long as you're eating quality calories and not gorging, I wouldn't worry about it. My grandmother had 9 kids, and she said no matter how much or how little she ate, she gained 50 pounds. My grandma's a size 8 now, btw. I'm 16 weeks and I've gained about 17 or so. I'm not stressing it. I was dieting before I got pregnant, and stopped immediately. There are also alternative doctors and diets out there (Bradley, for instance) that don't put any limit on weight gain, and just say eat enough to feed the child and yourself - QUALITY over quantity. just don't use this as an excuse to pig out every day.

Q&A: Pregnancy weight gain?

I just want to say to all of the mommies to be, to not worry about your weight gain. I am 5'2" and with my first pregnancy I gained 95 lbs. I was not over or under weight to begin with, I have just always gained very easily. I had a very healthy 7lb baby girl and lost all of the weight by the time she turned 1. Just remember, just as your body was different from everyone else prior to pregnancy, it will be during as well. In my opinion and my dr's as well, as long as you feel good and you are healthy, don't stress about it. If you gain a little extra, it just means you have to work a little harder after you give birth to take it back off. Happy pregnancies mommies!

Q&A: Pregnancy weight gain?

I am 17 weeks and 5 days as of today. I have a small-ish baby bump already. I am carrying low. At least, I feel like I am carrying low. This is my first pregnancy, so I am still wondering what is right and wrong with my body. I probably look like I just gained weight to people who do not know that I am pregnant. I have gained about 5-7 pounds overall, which I do not mind at all. I expect weight gain, and I am all for it if it means baby and I are healthy. My question is this: when should I expect to see an actual baby bump? One that others can look at and know that I am pregnant? I am really ready to flaunt that bump!!

Q&A: Pregnancy weight gain?

I have had trouble losing weight since I turned 21 and started birth control, I took birth control for 5 years straight and since then I had to excercise really hard 5-7 days a week and eat healthy to lost anything. So when I got pregnant I was 171 and know I am 16 weeks and I weight 177, so I have gained 6 pounds, is that too much for being 16 weeks? It doesn't sound like much on the scale, but I look bigger in my face, my thighs are so much bigger, my arms are bigger and I look 6 months pregnant instead of 4 months, I just do not understand why I look so huge if I have only gained 6 pounds. This is my first pregnancy, so any info would be great. thanks :):)

Q&A: Pregnancy weight gain?

I am at 19 weeks and have not gained any weight yet, but my tummy and boobs are alot larger. The doctor was not concerned at all that I have not gained any weight yet since all my tests and ultrasounds have come back good. We had the 18-20 week anatomy scan yesterday and everything was perfect so that helped ease my fears that I have not gained any weight yet. even though i cannot fit into alot of my pre pregnancy clothes anymore. I think it all depends on how you are eating, and just your individual body since everyone is different. Also if you are underweight before you will prob gain weight faster.

Q&A: Pregnancy weight gain?

I am 16 weeks and I am negative 2 on my pre-baby weight. I dont understand why women are saying things like "I wasnt blessed with morning sickness, so the pounds are staying with me". Morning sickness isnt a blessing. Niether is not gaining enough weight for the baby. I was exactly in weight range for my height and while I only had 4 hard weeks of morning sickness, they were very aggressive weeks. Lots of vomitting and a period of dehydration that left me very worried and hospitalized. You ladies who have gained 10 lbs at your 16th week.. dont worry about it! Be happy you are doing so well for your baby! I cant tell you the disappointment when after a solid 4 weeks of eating full meals, I was still negative 2 lbs on my pre baby weight. The the thing is, even my OB was not upset. Every pregnancy is different. While me pants are fitting looser and my clothes seem to be getting baggy in my non belly areas, my belly is growing right along. In a sense, a baby IS a parasite. It will get all of the nutrients it needs first, and it will take those things from you if it needs them. I hope to have gained more at my 20 week checkup.

I've been so angry about the weight gain, as I'm exercising 30 minutes a day and avoid all refined sugars and carbs. Q&A: Pregnancy weight gain?

Ah, weight gain...my nemesis. I think I'm doing well...but who knows. I'm 16 weeks and have gained 8-10 pounds. It doesn't sound bad, especially considering all of this lovely constipation. The weight changes daily. I know many out there know what I mean. My main issue is that I am already overweight, though have been healthy. They only want me to gain 15 pounds total. Yikes! I'm over half way there. :( I weigh myself almost every day, just to keep my eye on it. I know it's important, but what we're putting into our bodies is important too. I've decided not to worry about it and do my best to eat healthy. Yes, I do cheat though! :) I go to the doctor on the 9th and then for an ultrasound around Thanksgiving time. We'll see what the doctor says. Until then, I'm going to try to eat well and keep my feet moving! Good luck everyone!

Q&A: Pregnancy weight gain?

i am 16 weeks today and I've gained 8 lbs but I know most of it is water weight considering i'm up at least 2 times every night going pee, and it's like a 2-3 minute pee and that's just between the hours of 11 pm and 8 am....during the day i'm constantly going to the bathroom. It's been hard for me to eat much since i'm constantly nauseated so i just eat whatever i can that won't come up later which isn't much....i getcompliments about having a glow and making pregnancy look easy so that makes me feel much better. Women, this is a beautiful time for us and we need to love ourselves and love the way we're changing because just remember, this is when we're going to be the most beautiful!

Q&A: Pregnancy weight gain?

I'm 16 weeks today and have only gained 4 pounds. THANK GOODNESS! I was already 20 pounds overweight before I got pregnant so I'm really hoping I continue on this track. I drink a lot of water with every meal so it helps fill me up faster.

Q&A: Pregnancy weight gain?

I was really concerned with my weight when I became pregnant. I am average size and generally healthy and active. But with my first child I gained over 50 lbs and had to work to get it off. So I think the whole weight gain thing is up to each person and their body, I am still working out everyday, mainly because I want an easier delivery (fingers crossed) and faster recovery and get back into my jeans quicker :-) but I am 16 weeks and people are shocked thinking I am due in a couple months. I don't know how much weight I've gained, maybe 15 lbs, I'm hoping. Just excercise and eat healthy, of course indulging your cravings on occasion. But I've realized that worrying about my weight is taking away from the joy of being pregnant! So I am just doing what I know is healthy and right and I will gain what my body decides to gain, enjoy this pragnancy and that's all I can do about it :-)

Q&A: Pregnancy weight gain?

I'm between 16 and 17 weeks and I've already gained 12 pounds!! I had morning/all day sickness during my first trimester, but my appetite compensated for all of the lost meals. I've been at a healthy weight for my whole life and I'm active every day, but I'm starting to feel insecure about my weight gain. My doctor said it was okay, but she also said that she was surprised that I had gained so much so quickly. Is anyone else going through the same thing?

Q&A: Pregnancy weight gain?

From what I have been told with all three of my children, and with my current pregnancy, a pound a week is actually good, and borderline minimal. Especially since you didn't gain during your first trimester. The opposite happens to me, I gain most of my weight at first then slow down towards the end.

Q&A: Pregnancy weight gain?

At 16 weeks I gained 18 pounds so far...... i was crash dieting for 2 weeks before I found out I was pregnant and lost 10-12 pounds in 2 weeks so as soon as I found out I was pregnant...I went from starving myself and smoking and running 3 miles a day ...to eating 3 meals a day, stopping smoking, stopping running(too tired) and no morning sickness and a hefty appetite. Hopefully during the sesond trimester it will slow down and I can get back to the gym!!!! Its scary that Im 16 weeks and have gained most of what i should gain the enitre pregnancy!!

i am 16 weeks...i have been showing since i was like 2ish months...my doctor said it is gas...but i dont see how that is true...is anyone else like this

kford1984 |

Q&A: Pregnancy weight gain?

I'm at 20 weeks and have gained about 16 pounds. I didn't gain anything during my first trimester due to the nausea and limited eating. My doctor told me that since I conceived at 20 pounds overweight, a 15-20 pound gain overall would be ideal. She then said that if I gained 30 pounds, that was fine, she just didn't want me to restrict my calories or try dieting. Most of my weight gain has been in the past month due to the holidays, which she says is true of most her patients. She said things should even out during the remainder of my pregnancy. She calculated what my delivery weight gain would be if I continued on my current trek and said it looked like 36 pounds. She was not concerned at all and neither was my husband when I told him. My baby girl is doing great! She is a healthy size and all her tests have come back normal. I think other comments here about us being our own worst critic are true and also that every woman's body is different.

Q&A: Pregnancy weight gain?

This should make others feel much better. I am only 16 weeks and have gained 20- 25 pounds depending on the scale :). The nausea from the first trimester hurt me bad because i ate and ate to keep the nausea under control. Now that I am in the second trimester the nausea has decreased and I am hoping my weight maintains for the next few months. Heres to wishful thinking!

Q&A: Pregnancy weight gain?

I gained about 40 lbs during the 38 weeks I was pregnant with my first. After having her, I lost ALOT of water weight and realized I had only 5 lbs to lose to get back to my pre-pregnancy weight. The thing to remember is that everyone is different and so is every pregnancy. The things to worry about are if the baby is not putting on enough weight or if your blood pressure is going up along with your weight gain. Other than that, don't strees too much, as it is not good for you or the baby!

Q&A: Pregnancy weight gain?

I am 16 weeks and at my last appointment last week (15 weeks) I had gained 13 lbs so far...I was a size zero before and I think it might be because I was properly nourished before pregnancy and when I started to eat correctly (3 meals a day, etc) that my body compensated by storing fat...I am hoping to slow down the weight gain and slowly gain the last 13 lbs or so....

Q&A: Pregnancy weight gain?

I gained a ton over the holidays before I knew I was pregnant. I was 159 when I found out I was 7 weeks pregnant. At 9 weeks (my first doc. apt) I weight 152. now I am 17 weeks and I am still at 155. I have been working out everyday and trying to eat really well. I am just afraid I am going to blow up during my last 2 trimesters! Any suggestions? My doctor told me that she only wants me to gain a total of 15 pounds so I am 17 weeks and really only have ten more pounds to gain acording to my doctor which I think is going to be hard to do??? anyone else allitle over thier normal weight when they got pregnant? if so how did you handle it. Q&A: Pregnancy weight gain?

Hi there everyone :) I am 28 weeks and already gained probably about 25lbs. My weight was 135lbs at the beginning of my pregnancy and I am 5`7” I now weigh 160lbs. I was extremely depressed about my weight gain during 2nd trimester. It felt like every time I went to the doctor I gained 8lbs. At 25 weeks I got sick with Influenza A, it really scared me since I ran a temp of over 102 degrees and all I can think about is how will this affect my baby. Doctor gave me prescription since my life and baby` s life was at risk. That was also stressful since I know that medication isn’t good when you are pregnant, regardless to say, the weight gain was the last thing on my mind. Luckily fever went down, but I only recovered after 2 weeks. It just makes you think that there is so much worse things that can happen than weight gain. I gained another 3 pounds and for the first time I couldn’t care less….as long as our baby is healthy that’s all that matters. :) We expecting a little girl beginning of June and we going to name her Kenzley. Very excited and hoping that the Influenza A and the Tamiflu medication didn’t affect her. Its all in Gods hands :) Happy Pregnancy everyone!!!! :)

I'm 16 weeks and have gained 12 pounds already. I started at 200lbs so the doctor says she wants me to sty around a 20 pound weight gain, but I don't see that happening :\ I'm eating according to what a nutritionist says and have to believe this is all temporary...This is my fourth, and I've lost 20-22 lbs at every delivery - the rest will go with a little effort. Most important is a healthy, happy well nourished baby :)

Q&A: Pregnancy weight gain?

I am 16 weeks and no one can tell I am pregnant. I fit into all of my old clothes just fine. I am still working out and eating right, I mostly feel bloated and kind of gross but that is all. I weighed 113 before I got pregnant and just yesterday I went to my OB appointment and I was 123!!!!!!!!!!!!! I have no idea where that came from all of a sudden, my clothes still fit and I still wear my belt on the same notch as before.... so where is it going? Where did it come from....I had lost weight during my first trimester because I was sick all of the time and then all of sudden 10 lbs higher than my normal weight? I haven't been eating that much because I still feel sick, and I'm still running almost everyday. What is going on....

littlesergeant |

Q&A: Pregnancy weight gain?

I started off my pregnancy 5'3 and 112lbs. I'm 20 weeks and have gained 17lbs which to me sounds like a ton of weight but its all in the belly and the doctor says that I am right on track and that some people gain more in the beginning and some people gain more at the end. As long as your doctor is not concerned and you are eating a healthy amount and variety of food I would not be concerned. I just think for many of us being scale watchers our entire lives makes this very difficult when it shouldn't be. Good luck to everyone for a happy and healthy pregnancy.

I have been actively keeping track of every lb. I gain and everything I eat. The first trimester I gained 4lbs. Second tri. gained 12lbs. Im now 27 weeks and have gained another 4 pounds since last check up. Totalling 20 lbs. in 27 weeks. Doc says Im on track to gaining 35 lbs. I dont necessarily eat perfect, lots of fruits and veggies...but some junk NO FAST FOOD PERIOD! That stuff is death bottled up... My only suggestion is eat accordingly and walk.. you'll have a healthy pregnancy

Q&A: Pregnancy weight gain?

I'm 16 weeks and have gained 14 lbs. This is less than my last two pregnancies. I usually gain around 40-45 lbs (I'm average weight for my size) while exercising the entire pregnancy. After nursing and getting back to exercising Im smaller than pre preggars weight in 4 months! The longer you nurse, the more calories it takes to feed em so nurse away if you can!

Q&A: Pregnancy weight gain?

I lost a baby in January at 27 weeks and at that point had only put on 6 pounds. My doctors sent me to a nutritionist and threatened to make me take a psych eval for potential eating disorders. In all honesty, I've always been conscious of my weight, but I wasn't having any problems eating. I spent most of the pregnancy over the toilet and doing the weight yo-yo thing. After we lost her, I dropped down to about 10 pounds below my initial pre-preggers weight. This time around, I'm 14 weeks and have put on about 2.5 pounds. My weight is quite a bit behind most of my pregnant friends (and we're being compared by our common doctor's office too!) and I'm getting a little worried. I eat whenever, whatever, wherever but don't seem to be able to hold any weight. Any suggestions? I don't want them to think I'm purposely not gaining, especially since I was below my "normal" weight before getting pregnant, but I can't seem to see those numbers go up.

Q&A: Pregnancy weight gain?

Every pregnacy is different. I am 16 weeks and I have lost 5 lbs from the time I found out I was prego. My doctor says I can loose all the weight I want as long as the baby is growing correctly. With my first pregnancy I lost weight in the 2nd trimester, about 30lbs. The day I delivered my son I weighed 240 lbs. 3 days after he was born I weighed 155 lbs. I lost 85 lbs just giving birth to my son. The weight I put on was ALL BABY!!!! Every person is different!

@meland An aspect that has became of interest in the last years is pregorexia.Pregorexia is a disorder similar to anorexia but one that occurs during and after pregnancy.Pregorexia causes the woman who suffers from it guilt and shame similar to what is experienced by almost all sufferers of anorexia.ccording to a poll from the National Association of Anorexia Nervosa and Associated Disorders (ANAD), seven million women suffer from an eating disorder.Millions of other women don't fit the clinical criteria for an eating disorder but display some of the symptoms.Unfortunately, not everyone of them check in for an eating disorder treatment .You should look in to this if you consider that you have any symptoms and seek professional help.

Q&A: Pregnancy weight gain?

I am just about 17wks and I have gained 12lbs. I eat about a 1500calorie diet a day, I work out 3-5 times a week and I walk at least 30min a day wtih my dog. I don't know what I can be doing differently, I eat health, work out and I can't understand why I am gaining so quickly. My doctor told me not to worry that my baby is health and I am doing everything right. I have always struggled with my weight; I have always been overweight but in shape because I work out and am active. My husband tells me I look sexy all the time and my family tells me not to worry but I can't help but feel fat. I pray that I don't gain more then 25lbs but at this rate I feel like it is out of my control. I really don't know what I can do differently not to gain the weight so quickly.

Q&A: Pregnancy weight gain?

I'm 17 weeks and have gained appx 8lbs. I have been afraid to gain weight because at one point in my life I was 40lbs heavier than I was when I got pregnant. When got pregnant I was a very fit and healty size 6 and 141lbs (I'm 5' 7') My life since losing that weight has been a consistent battle of counting calories and exercising to keep fit. I am trying to let go of my fears and remember that eating healthy and gaining weight is the best thing for the baby. My biggest fear is not being able to lose the weight afterwards. Anyone terrified of the weight gain?? What are you doing to ease your fears???

stacylynn1982 |

Q&A: Pregnancy weight gain?

My experience is opposite of this- I'm at week 16 and have gained nearly 13 pounds. I had no morning sickness and a slightly low BMI to begin with, and gained most of that in my first trimester. My midwife said that often women who are slimmer to begin with gain weight early on. I had nausea in the first trimester, but never vomited, and felt all the time like I would die if I didn't eat, so I did! I also was too exhausted and sick to exercise normally. Now having moved into the second trimester, my hunger seems to have leveled off, and so has my weight gain. Everyone's different- just do what your body wants you to do. I didn't even feel like I had the OPTION of not eating during my first trimester, and apparently that's normal for some of us ladies too! I also had some bleeding during my first trimester (twice I thought I had my period- had no idea I was pregnant until I was at nearly 2 months!) so it could have also just been my body's way to try to stabilize the pregnancy. I don't care what I gain during this time in my life as long as my baby is healthy!

chandarae |

Q&A: Pregnancy weight gain?

I don't really know how much I have gained. I am not sure how much I weighed before pregnancy, AND GUESS WHAT......as long as the baby is healthy I don't really mind! I am normally very fit, but also suffer from water retention gaining in a normal mentrual cycle about 10 lbs! So in the first 10 weeks of pregnancy I gained about 10lbs, which has caused severe carpal tunnel in both arms. Since then I think my weight gain has slowed down, but then again, I am not sure! I am 16 weeks and according to my husband I just look like I have been on an indulgent holiday for a couple of weeks! I just think we are all so different how can you say a particular amount is "normal". what is normal?? I am 5"11 and "normally" weigh about 165-172lbs, you but that in a bmi calculator and I'm already "overweight". However, I normally have a 32-28-26 figure, bmi's a stupid. Everyone is different. My sister was so ill in her pregnancy she lost 56lbs in the first trimeter due to severe morning sickness so after that she was eating everything under the sun and she was encouraged too by the doctors. By her due date she had gained about 100lbs! Thats pretty good going in 2 trimeters! But you know she has a beautiful HEALTHY little boy because she fed herself after being so sick. She lost if quickly because she breast fed and ate good healthy food, even with the limitations of an emergency C section. Listen to your body, try and eat good healthy food and you can't go wrong. Just avoid the unhealthy, its not good for the baby anyway!

Q&A: Pregnancy weight gain?

I am 22 weeks pregnant with my first child (a BOY!) and have gained 25lbs. Now, I'm short and was a normal weight before pregnancy, but i hate to exercise (like, loathe with all my heart). I've been eating healthily and drinking lots of water. I'm sure 25 lbs. could be considered a lot for the half-way point of pregnancy, but on the other hand - my doctor hasn't said a thing about my weight and i still feel good, healthy. My baby is healthy. Nothing else matters, right? So don't worry about the pounds. Don't worry about what others are saying (unless its your doctor). In fact, i made my husband swear to never look at the scale at my appointments and have kept the numbers to myself. As long as you and baby are healthy, just enjoy pregnancy and stop with the guilt. You are a superhero growing a human-being inside of you! Let go and eat ice cream. I'm sure Aristotle or Einstein or someone brilliant said that at some point.

Q&A: Pregnancy weight gain?

I am 22 weeks and I have gained around 17 lbs. Pretty much all in my stomach. I am huge lol (atleast in my opinion). I feel like I am gaining more this time than I have with my 2 previous, but I know I am not exercising as much as I did with them either. Working full time and chasing 2 little ones (4yrs and 18mos) has not really left me much extra workout time. I will definitely be working out extra after the birth.

Q&A: Pregnancy weight gain?

I'm 16 weeks and have gained 16lbs. I was told by my midwife to watch it. This is my third child and with my previous pregnancies I gained between 25-32lbs and lost it all in a few months. I'm a runner and I do yoga, so I've stuck with that as my workout routine. I'm 38 now, so I know that it will take more effort this time around. Still, I'm a little paranoid about the weight gain even though it's only in my stomach.

Q&A: Pregnancy weight gain?

This is my second pregnancy and I gained 52lbs with my first because I started at about 100lbs, which is about 25lbs or so underweight. I gained all the weight in my boobs and belly. I breastfed my son and easily went back to a normal weight in a couple months. My weight tends to fluctuate because I am very active and have a high metabolism and eat healthy but feel I look better with a little curve so before this pregnancy I worked hard on gaining 10lbs and started at 129lbs. I have a different doctor this time around I went in at 14 weeks and had gained 5lbs since the month before and she was concerned about my weight gain. She said I shouldn't have gained 5lbs until 20weeks which sounds like a ridiculous expectation! The girls have gone up 2 cup sizes and I eat healthy and swim everyday. She then criticized my eating so much fruit because it has a few more calories than veggies but all I want to eat are strawberries and watermelon and told me swimming would only make me hungry. I feel like I can't win!

It is frustrating and only makes me feel more awkward and self conscience then i already do. There is already so much that goes into the day to day getting through now to have to worry about weight too! It is tiring.

Oh and let me add this is my 3rd pregnancy and i never had this problem with the other 2. :/

Q&A: Pregnancy weight gain?

I am 21 weeks, and Have only gained 2 pounds, although I lost 6 on the first trimester so really I have still lost 4 pounds. I am unable to work out anymore, or Teach my Zumba classes like I was or work AT ALL...I eat alot ( or I think I do) I'm not to sure what else I can do. This is my first pregnancy and has been SUPER hard so far, its so boring sitting at home with limited things to do!!! I cannot WAIT for this baby to arrive.

I am 24 weeks and have gained 20 pounds! People are making me feel terrible about it. But I feel like the only places I look like ive gained it is in my belly and thighs( of course my problem area). im only 5'2 and have a short torso. Im wondering if height plays any part in this.

Q&A: Pregnancy weight gain?

i am 16 weeks today. i was 116 lbs (5'3") when we conceived and i now weigh 130. i was lucky and didn't have ANY sickness, just slight nausea that i staved off with eating chicken biscuits from hardees, cheese, TONS of peanut butter crackers, bacon, etc. before we got pregnant i thought i'd have the healthiest pregnancy because all i ate was yogurt, lean meat (occasionally), fruits, veggies, and low fat things. then all of a sudden i couldn't STAND the thought of any of those things! it wasn't till half way though my first trimester that i was able to stomach fruits then veggies again. i hated sweets my first trimester (before, i had an insatiable sweet tooth!) but now i'm back on track with ice cream and cake, which i make sure not to eat too much of, still. i never used to drink sodas but now that's just about all that i want! my husband says he knows it's a boy because i'm eating like a teenage boy. i feel like i've gained too much too fast and i'll have to kill myself to get all the weight off afterward. i absolutely want to do what's best for my baby so of course i'm not dieting but i'm not "eating for two" like a lot of girls i know are doing. i'm still counting calories just to keep track but it seems like everything i'm eating (back on track with the healthy food for the majority of my diet) sticks to me! i'm hoping the doctor won't tell me this is unhealthy and harmful for my baby :(

Q&A: Pregnancy weight gain?

I am naturally a big girl by the standard set by docs. Pre pregnancy I was 5'8 and 180lbs. The critics say I should gain between 15-25lbs (right). I am 16wks now and I think I started showing the same day the stick turned pink. I have gained 9 lbs (most over the holiday) and am not going to stress it at this point. I have heard/seen gals gain anywere from 15-80+ in their first pregancy. All I can do is do my best to keep us both healthy and happy and then worry about the weight after.

Q&A: Pregnancy weight gain?

I am 13 weeks now and have gained just 2 lbs. But... my first pregnancy I gained a total of 43lbs and lost 30 of that just by giving birth. So please don't worry too much about your weight gain. Just keep eating healthy and giving into cravings every once in a while and everything will be great! Good luck ladies!

Q&A: Pregnancy weight gain?

I just met with my doctor; I am 16 weeks today. She told me that my total weight gain as of now is 9 lbs, and "while that's ok, you don't want to gain any more right now." That made me feel awful about myself! Is 9 lbs in four months too much weight??

Q&A: Pregnancy weight gain?

I was 5'6'' and 121 pounds pre-pregnancy. I gained 8 pounds in the first 12 weeks due to queasiness (hung-over type feeling) that was only helped by eating lots of carbs/hamburgers/etc and keeping my stomach full. My doctor said nothing to me at my appt about my weight and the nurse was very reassuring. I am now 16 weeks and have gained maybe another pound at most. I have been working out appx 3 times per week and in general just eating more healthy since I have energy again like I did pre-pregnancy. My legs/butt/arms are starting to feel more toned, which in general is making me feel a lot better. Pre-pregnancy weight, metabolism, calorie intake, and general individuality mean that we are all going to gain our weight differently during pregnancy. I am one of those people who never had to worry too much about my weight before and now that I feel good, I just want to be eating very nutritious meals for my baby. I think it's normal for each of us to worry a little about our weight gain. But for those of you who are on track to gain no more than 35 lb and are being given a hard time by your physician/midwife- try not to take it to heart.

Q&A: Pregnancy weight gain?

In such an organized group, a healthy and energetic life becomes the ultimate lifestyles. I have had some life experiences and I know how nice things could be around people like them. The group culture inspires everyone into staying fit and healthy. I really want to work on my physical condition and I was thinking about buying winstrol - v but I will still ask for the opinion of a medical specialist.

Q&A: Pregnancy weight gain?

If you are hungry or craving you should eat! Never deprive yourself or run on empty because of going over calorie intake! If you are craving something it is because your body needs something for the baby! I hate hearing these nurses say things to ignore cravings. I have learned throughout this pregnancy to listen to my dr. only and not the nurses. They messed things up already for me and I was very annoyed by them. Anyway, I am 16 weeks and I have gained about 13 pounds. I was never sick and always had a good appetite from the beginning.I think I gained like 5 pounds in the first month and they always say you should only gain 2 pounds? As long as you are healthy and baby is good, who cares what you gain. YOu will lose it later. Good luck everyone!

I am 16 wks and I am 5'8 this is my third pregnancy and so far I have gained 2 lbs. At my Dr. appt they didn't say anything about my weight gain so I am assuming everything is good. I actually thought I gain too much weight but maybe I am the opposite since I have read others have gained more.

Q&A: Pregnancy weight gain?

Ok, reading these posts, I don't feel so bad about my weight gain. I'm 25 weeks preg and gained 7lb since my 20 week appt. I did lose about 5-8lbs at the beginning of my preg and I got sick a total of 3 times. SO guess u can say I'm back to pre-preg weight. This is going to be my biggest struggle as I am overweight to begin with and don't want to gain too much weight.

Q&A: Pregnancy weight gain?

I'm pregnant with my second. I've gained 6 pounds so far and i'm at 17 weeks. I think I gained a total of 30 lbs about with my first one, lost all of that plus five pounds because of nursing within the first year. It's scary getting on the scale and seeing those numbers go up, but it's for a good healthy reason....giving and sustaining a life.

Q&A: Pregnancy weight gain?

I SO wish anyone other than medical professionals would keep their mouths shut about how much a pregnant woman is gaining... My Mother, (knowing I struggled to the point of being hospitalized with eating disorders through my teens and into my 20's) said to me after hearing I gained a few pounds in the first trimester "You know, when I was pregnant with you, I only gained 14lbs the whole pregnancy. My Doctor said I should be held on a pedestal for other women to see". Ugh.

Q&A: Pregnancy weight gain?

i actually dont know how much i weighed when i got pregnant b/c i dont have a scale at home where i weigh myself regularly and my first ob visit wasnt until 9 weeks... should i base my weight gain from that time on or estimate a few lbs less? i think it makes a difference of how your first trimester goes how much you should be "allowed" to gain -women who get bad morning sickness and throw up a lot are obviously going to lose weight whereas i didnt throw up once but instead felt hungry all the time and had to eat constantly. I feel like those of us that DIDNt throw up should be allowed to gain a few more lbs.

mikesbride12 |

Q&A: Pregnancy weight gain?

That sounds completely normal to me. I gained a minimal amount of weight during the first trimester - I also had no morning sickness, so I learned early on to be cognizant of the food I was eating because everything I ate stuck with me. I'm now at the 17.5 week mark now, and have gained about 7-8 lbs total. A few helpful things I've kept in mind were a) A significant portion of my weight gain has been in my bra cup alone, and I suspect I'm not the only one for whom that's the case b) The average weight gain is the 25-35 pound range. For some reason, we've all convinced ourselves the average is only 25 pounds. Assuming you stick with the pound per week gain starting at the 20 week mark, that means you could be +15 pounds by 20 weeks and at 40 weeks still be in the normal range! C) Everyone is different! If you feel great and are making smart choices when it comes to your health, don't worry about the scale.

Q&A: Pregnancy weight gain?

I am 22 weeks pregnant with my first child. I started out slightly overweight, before I got pregnant. I am 5'9" and weighed 175lbs prepreggers, which was also new to me considering for many years I was never more than 140lbs, then I turned 35 and all of that changed. Anyway, I didn't gain any weight at all during the first trimester, so I thought I was doing ok. Now in the past 3 weeks I have gained 13lbs.... and I still have 4 months to go! I am so nervous that being a bit older (36 now), I will have such a hard time losing this weight (and I want to go back to my 140lb frame afterwards, so I will have to lose baby weight, and then some). I have been eating well, keeping my sugar intake low, and exercising everyday.... I guess I am just expressing my fears here, but I really hope my weight stays under control!

Q&A: Pregnancy weight gain?

I am 17 weeks and have gained 7 lbs. My jeans still fit but I opted to get some cute "skinny" maternity jeans, which I was totally surprised to see at the store. They are SO comfortable!! They are like pajamas and I am SO glad I made the switch. This is my second pregnancy. With my first baby, I was SO concerned with weight gain, how much is okay, etc. When I presented my questions to my doctor, she was not at all concerned with my weight gain fears, she said each person is different and there is not a set amount of weight each person should gain or not gain. If you are gaining too much, they just do the tests, like some of you mentioned-glucose tests, etc, but as long as your numbers come back normal, there is nothing to worry about. I gained about 35 lbs with my first baby and had a really hard time losing any of it after he was born until he was nine months old, which is when I stopped nursing. Everyone says that nursing will help you lose your baby weight but that NEVER happened for me!!!!!! I was still eating for two, to make healthy milk, and once I quit nursing, the pounds just melted off. Everyone is different and I did eventually lose my weight. Don't be hard on yourselves about gaining weight. It is only temporary!!

Q&A: Pregnancy weight gain?

The things doctors say lead me to believe they have no idea what they are talking about. When I was pregnant with my now 7'year old I went from 150 to 215 that's a 65 pound weight gain, the same day I delivered my daughter I went from 215 to 175. That's 40 pounds in fluids and baby. Few months later I was 150 again, so how can they limit weight gain to 25 pounds if the fluids retained and the baby are atleast 40 pounds?!!

Q&A: Pregnancy weight gain?

I'm only 17 weeks with my first and I feel like I have gained weight EVERYWHERE! It's not noticeable in my belly yet and I'm not exactly sure how much I've gained but nothing fits right. Also I'm confused because I was sick for the first 13 weeks (throwing up everything) and couldn't hardly eat anything and now that I can eat it's all really healthy food and not anymore than I would normally eat. I'd feel better if it was all going to my belly, but that's not happening and I feel doomed!

Q&A: Pregnancy weight gain?

I am steadily gaining a pound a week. last appointment was 15 wks... and 15 pounds. I personally think as long as every visit you go in and the doc says the baby is healthy and doing great, then who cares if you have gained 5 or 50? It is impossible to compare yourself to anyone else. You can't even compare yourself to your previous pregnancies. You ladies are all beautiful, and your bodies are doing exactly what they need to in order to nurture that baby. Try not to obsess over a number on a scale.

Q&A: Pregnancy weight gain?

I am 12 wks and 1 day and have gained 9 lbs since I found out I was pregnant at 4 weeks. I am so scared to gain too much weight, but my Dr. has not commented on my weight. Is this too much too soon?

Flirtykitty24 |

Q&A: Pregnancy weight gain?

I'm actually shocked by how many doctors are telling their patients that they are gaining too much weight. Of course, the average weight gain depends on your BMI but I'm 5'7"+ recommended to gain 25-35lbs. At my 20 week appt, I had gained 16lbs and my doctor was not worried at all. In fact, I've just started showing a little now. Some people gain more at the beginning. Others gain more at the end. I think everyone just needs to stop worrying, eat healthy and exercise. You want the best for your baby... and that might not be trying to stick to some crazy guideline if that doesn't work for you or if you are truly hungry then you need to eat! Just my two cents!

Q&A: Pregnancy weight gain?

My doctor told me to gain 35 lbs this pregnancy. It is my first and I was a little underweight before the pregnancy. I'm 16 weeks and have gained 20 lbs. My doctor said everything is good to go so don't worry about gaining a few extra. She told me that everyone gains differently and numbers on the scale shouldn't stress you out! If your health is good then stay calm and carry on:)
