Q&A: Mid-pregnancy ultrasound?

I'm scheduled to have an ultrasound soon, in my 20th week. What should I expect to happen, and what's my doctor looking for?

Re: I'm scheduled to have an ultrasound soon, in my 20th week. What should I expect to happen, and what's my doctor looking for?

The Bump Expert

During the mid-pregnancy ultrasound (also called the standard ultrasound), usually around 20 weeks, your doc is basically checking to make sure baby's growing and developing properly. This generally includes taking baby's heartbeat, checking for physical abnormalities, confirming any suspicions of twins or other multiples, measuring the amount of amniotic fluid (to much or too little could signal a problem), checking the location of your placenta to be sure it isn’t covering the cervix, and taking lots of measurements to make sure baby is the right size for his gestational age. (If your babe measures very large or very small, you may be given a new due date!)

The truly exciting part about your 20 week ultrasound (well, besides the assurance that you’re growing a healthy baby)? This is your chance to catch a glimpse of what the little one looks like in there, and you’re likely to get a couple of printouts to show off to the fam! And, if you want to know baby’s sex, this is the moment of truth -- your doc should be able to detect your little one’s girlie or boyish bits on the ultrasound screen (if baby isn’t covering the goods with his or her arms or legs).

Q&A: Mid-pregnancy ultrasound?

I didn't have my first ultrasound until i was 14 weeks. It made me really nervous but it was worth it because everything turned out great!

Q&A: Mid-pregnancy ultrasound?

I have been getting pics since i started going to the doctor at 6 weeks. I am now currently 16 wks expecting twins. I will find out what the genders are Friday, 14th.

Q&A: Mid-pregnancy ultrasound?

I guess it all depends on when you found out you were pregnant. I had my 1st ultrasound at 10 weeks. I have an appointment in a week (I'll be 18 weeks then) I'm hoping I have another ultrasound, so I can see my little one again & hopefully find out the gender :)

Q&A: Mid-pregnancy ultrasound?

Hello....here's my tidbit.....due to it taking 3.5 years to get pregnant....issue was so simple it was silly, but still involved Clomid and Progesterone.....I had an ultrasound at 7 weeks to confirm the heartbeat from my fertility people....and then one at 10 weeks to see heartbeat again because it was too soon to hear it and then with my OB, one at 13 weeks to check on baby...looks like a boy...unless something falls off....and then will have one at 16 weeks to confirm boy status....don't know after that how many I will be able to have. The ultracounds made me feel very secure and reassured in the pregnancy. Everything is going great at 14 weeks and counting. I wanted to have a sono every month for baby book, especially because this is my first and have been very lucky. Good luck to all!-Gwen

Q&A: Mid-pregnancy ultrasound?

I've been getting pictures from my last 2 ultrasounds (8w & 12w) I asked for them though each time. I have about 6 photos so far. I find out the sex on the 24th.

Q&A: Mid-pregnancy ultrasound?

I got my first picture at 5 weeks then 6 weeks ( we thought there was something wrong but it all turned out ok) and another one at 11 weeks when we were doing our genetic testing, we go in on the 25th for our mid-pregnancy ultrasound. we cant wait to find out the gender, but they also mentioned that the sonogram will check the bone structure of the baby.

Q&A: Mid-pregnancy ultrasound?

I have seen the baby every 4 weeks since week 6. If not on the official u/s equipment, my OB has a machine in the office and she looks at baby every time I am there. She even says that if anything ever gets the best of me and it would just ease my mind to see the baby, to let her know and they will show her to me! I love my Dr.!! My 19 week "Standard u/s" revealed the sex, but baby wasn't moving enough to get all of the measurements, so I am looking forward to getting to see the baby again on 28th. I hear all Dr's are different, though. My friend, who goes to the Dr in the next office over from mine, will not get to see her baby even on the first OB visit at 12 weeks. She is not happy abou it!

Q&A: Mid-pregnancy ultrasound?

I had a sonogram done on my first visit at 9 weeks. She was just a little lima bean that that time. I had an ultrasound done this week, now that I'm at 15 weeks, and they think it's a girl! I still have my mid-term u/s next month to check development. We requested the early u/s due to genetic complications for both my sister and my sis-in-law. Good news is our little one looks healthy!

I got an u/s when I was 6 wks along (and in the ER for abdominal pain). Got another one when I was 13 wks along. I go back tomorrow @ 17 wks and hopefully I can get an u/s and find out the gender as well! It's a pain waiting inbetween appts just to see the little one!

Q&A: Mid-pregnancy ultrasound?

I havent gotten to see my baby yet and I'm 13 weeks. My dr wont do and ultrasound till I'm 20weeks. He hasent even tried to hear the heartbeat yet. Kinda disapointed in my dr but I'm guessing he knows what he is doing. We go in on the 21st of Dec to hear the heartbeat for the first time. Its our first baby and I feel I missing out on so much after readind all about your ultrasounds. Hope we get to hear the heartbeat this apt or I might think about changing dr's. Good Luck everyone!

Q&A: Mid-pregnancy ultrasound?

I found out I was pregnant at just shy of 4 weeks, the wonders of early tests! I didn't have my first ultrasound until I was almost 21 weeks. Both my doctors (I switched after my first appointment) said that it was standard to wait until then unless there was some reason to check earlier. I don't know if thats always the case and it was so hard to wait that long but there really wasn't any medical reason to check earlier.

Q&A: Mid-pregnancy ultrasound?

I had an ultrasound at 8 weeks to see the heartbeat and I just had my 2nd one at 18 weeks. Everything looked good and it a boy! but they did say i have placenta previa so they will be doing multiple followup ultrasounds....and i'm not complaining at all!

Q&A: Mid-pregnancy ultrasound?

Its better when your a lil farther on, when your under 14 weeks the baby looks like a bean, all that they look for then is the hearbeat. at the 20week ultrasound they look for babys organs forming any birthdefects with the spine and gender if the baby is in the right position....

ashleyann8387 | January 13 , 2010 11:43 AM

Q&A: Mid-pregnancy ultrasound?

I had an ultrasound when I was 10 weeks pregnant (in the ER) due to abdomen pain, which was only a Urinary Tract Infection. Which is common in the early stages of pregnancy! The ultrasound tech said everything look okay. I was very happy i got to see the baby! Now i am 19 weeks and next Thursday I have a ultrasound app.! I cannot wait until then! I cannot wait to see the sex of the baby (I hope it is a little girl!!) but as long as the baby is healthy then thats the most important thing. A lot of people think it is a girl but, the only way I can see if next week! But, I also think knowing the baby is healthier is the MosT important thing at this time.

amandabirk | February 11 , 2010 11:43 AM

Q&A: Mid-pregnancy ultrasound?

I guess it all depends on your doctor, the equipment available in their office, and your insurance. I am getting my first ultrasound at 20 weeks, and man is it hard to wait that long, but I would rather not have to get one earlier if the reason I would be getting one is due to complications. ONly two weeks to go!

Q&A: Mid-pregnancy ultrasound?

i had my first ultrasound at 7 1/2 weeks and my second was at 12 weeks. the second was part of the testing for down syndrome but it was still great to see the baby. my next one will be in less than two weeks (19 weeks along) and hopefully we will be able to see the baby's gender! I've also gotten to hear my babies heartbeat every appointment since the 11th week. it is the greatest sound you'll ever hear!

Q&A: Mid-pregnancy ultrasound?

I had my first at 7 wks in my ob's office and my second at 11 wks. And then at 13 wks, I had the detailed first tri testing one. I got pics from them all.

jesfaust | April 02 , 2010 1:14 PM

Q&A: Mid-pregnancy ultrasound?

I also had my first one at 7 weeks, just wanted to make sure the baby was where they were suppose to be and measure. It helped since I found out my due date was 2 weeks later than they first thought. Although, I agree, the baby looked like a bean with a heart beat. I swear I saw 2 dots that looked like eyes, but my husband just said it was just wishful thinking. We got to see the baby again at 14 weeks for testing and it was nice to know everything looked good so far! Only three more weeks until we get to find out boy or girl, well, hopefully our little one will cooperate.

Q&A: Mid-pregnancy ultrasound?

I had one at 16 weeks - 1st because we are going on a Med. Cruise in two weeks and 2nd because I will be "advanced maternal age" when baby is born. I was not leaning towards having one now and again at 20 but I am GLAD I DID (and glad my Dr. pretty much told me I was having one at 16wks) and it was such a relief to see the baby, the heartbeat, the organs, the arms and legs...I am much more relaxed about my pregnancy now:). I'll be having another one at 20 wks when we get back from vacation.

Q&A: Mid-pregnancy ultrasound?

I am 16 weeks and have had 3 ultrasounds but only cuz i was having complications in the begining but now everything is great. It just really depends on how the pregnancy is going, with my first i had 2 ultrasound the whole pregnancy. Dont worry if the doctor thought something was wrong you would have an ultrasound. :)

amag22 | August 02 , 2010 1:31 AM

Q&A: Mid-pregnancy ultrasound?

I was exactly 16 weeks on Tuesday and I get my first ultrasound next Thursday and I have mixed feels on rather or not i want to know what I'm having. Being a single mom to be is kind of difficult because of having to make the last minute decisions. I want to know because it would make shopping and baby shower that much easier but not knowing means in 5 1/2 months I have a little surprise.

mnmarsh | September 10 , 2010 11:11 AM

Q&A: Mid-pregnancy ultrasound?

I'll be 16 weeks at the end of the week. When I was pregnant with my son, I think I was about 22 weeks or so when I had my first ultrasound. This time around I want to wait until about the same amount of time because I was able to get great pictures of him and was able to see clearly (without the 3D) what I was having. I strongly recommend that you wait if you can.

lmarie2011 | September 13 , 2010 12:10 PM

Q&A: Mid-pregnancy ultrasound?

I think you all are pretty lucky to have ultrasounds so early on, and for some of you so often! I won't get my first ultrasound at my doctor until 20 weeks. But I'm planning to get a 3D ultrasound separately at about 17 weeks, so that will be my first chance to see baby. It's definitely hard to wait this long, but my doctor says everything is progressing normally and we heard the heartbeat on the Doppler just fine, plus my insurance only pays for the 20 week U/S.

clcaulfield | October 15 , 2010 11:13 AM

Q&A: Mid-pregnancy ultrasound?

For me, I had an appointment when I was 10 weeks to hear for the heart beat, if one wasnt heard using their little instrument then I would have gotten an Ultrasound. We actually were able to hear the heart beat without an Ultrasound. I opted to do the testing for Down Syndrome and Spina Bifida so I had the first half of the ultraounds when I was 12 weeks pregnant. I almost couldnt have the test done because the baby was too small. The doctor said the baby has to be so many cm or mm long but he finally got the baby to pass for the testing. I have the second set of ultrasounds scheduled for Jan 31st, by then I will be going on my 18th week and he said at that time he will be able to tell me the sex of the baby which is super exciting. Im pretty sure im going to have a boy since I want a girl but so many people I know around me are all having girls, no boys.. so I figure I will be the one to end up having a boy. Thank god they make cute boy clothes!!

Q&A: Mid-pregnancy ultrasound?

They usually don't do an u/s til 20 weeks unless there's something wrong. I had a prior miscarriage and was supposed to have a 6 week u/s. For some reason it didn't happen so when I went in at 10 weeks the doctor said I'd have one then. Then he pulled out the doppler and found the heartbeat right away! So there was no need for the u/s. I was excited to know it was healthy, but I really wanted to see my baby!

Erbear1984 | February 10 , 2011 3:07 PM

Q&A: Mid-pregnancy ultrasound?

I had my first u/s at 12 weeks because my periods were irregular and they wanted to give me a more exact due date. We all thought I was only 10 weeks, but the u/s confirmed that I was really 12 weeks. I don't get another u/s until I am 20 weeks. I can't wait to see my little one again! This is my first pregnancy and can't wait to find out if the baby is a boy or girl. Four more weeks!!!

When some say gender scanning, is that a special appointment you made to find out the sex or is that what you call it because thats what your doctors is going to do at that appointment? Ive heard that you can pay to find out the sex of your child and just wanted to know!

Q&A: Mid-pregnancy ultrasound?

The doctor does a very in-depth ultrasound where they check to see if the arms and legs are appropriate length for age, they look to see if the heart is developing correctly and they can see the four chambers. They look at the lips to see if they see any abnormalities. The best part is the pictures. You get tons of pictures if you ask for them. I was 18w 6d when I had my mid pregnancy u/s and they were able to tell us the sex. We were so excited to find out we were having a baby girl and she was one healthy.

I am 13 weeks, I had my first ultrasound at 10 weeks and another at 12 weeks, but that was just for the NT testing. My next one won't be until I'm between 18-20 weeks as the "standard ultra sound". But so far, the doctor says the baby and me are progressing great. Just a heads up, Insurance only pays for a certain # of ultrasounds, or "medically required ultrasounds" anything you request extra, you will be paying out of pocket.

Q&A: Mid-pregnancy ultrasound?

I had a dating ultrasound at 9 weeks; since we decided not to do any genetic testing, we will have our final ultrasound at 18 weeks to find out the sex of the baby (hopefully!) . In the interm, my midwife checks the heartbeat at every visit so that we know that our baby is healthy, and it helps me to hear that heartbeat to know everything's ok!

I live in Hong Kong so maybe the doctors do things a little differently over here. First u/s in week 7 at my first appointment, then week 9 (both vaginal though) and then took the combined screening for Down syndrome + Trisomy 18 a few days ago at week 13. The last one was the first time the doctor did the u/s through my tummy. Pretty cool! Also got a 4D image (as if 3D is not enough, ha!) of the fetus. Do you guys get that in the US as well?

I had my first US at 7 weeks which was my first doc appt and he gabe us pictures. Then we just went back last week at 11 weeks and we just listened to the heartbeat on a Doppler machine but it was awesome & reassuring that there's still a baby in there! LOL I go back in 4 weeks for another heartbeat reading then at 20 weeks we get another US & find out the sex, around May 1, 2012. Doc said ultrasounds cost about $400.00 and that health insurance only covers so many....

Q&A: Mid-pregnancy ultrasound?

Due to miscarriage last year we had an early US at 8 weeks (gave us a pic of peanut ) we have our next US at 12 weeks where we will get another pic. We are TOO excited to see our rainbow baby again.

Q&A: Mid-pregnancy ultrasound?

I got my first US at 12w3d at maternal-fetal medicine for the 1st tri genetics screening. I got 6 pictures to take home, although 2 of them were in 4D and made my little one look like Spike from the Gremlins! My doctors office doesn't do them until 19-20 weeks unless there is a suspected problem. They look for the anatomy of the baby (arms, legs, neck size, overall baby size, any abnormalities) and of course gender if you'd like! :-)

Q&A: Mid-pregnancy ultrasound?

I go to my midwife every 4 weeks, and I get an ultrasound every time. That's why we were able to tell (99% sure) the gender at 13w5d. We go back at 17w5d, and that's when we'll confirm our suspicions. Baby showed us a clear view of her butt and she definitely didn't have any little "boy parts" but we're not sharing with friends until we've confirmed. And anyone we've told, we're making it very clear that we're not 100% certain.

I get an ultrasound every monthly visit. I guess it depends on the doctor.

Q&A: Mid-pregnancy ultrasound?

I had my first ultrasound at 4 weeks which was my first visit. I got to have a print out also. I had my second ultrasound at 11 weeks and got another print out then too. I can't wait for my mid-pregnancy ultrasound to find out if there is a little boy or a little girl inside my belly!

Q&A: Mid-pregnancy ultrasound?

I got my first ultrasound at 7 weeks 2 days because I was on Depo before getting pregnant and hadn't had a period for over a year. I had an ultrasound at 13 weeks because I went into the ER with bleeding and pain (threatened miscarriage) and was able to see my baby moving and it's heart beating =) In 2 weeks, I find out the sex! Fingers crossed for a girl <3>

Q&A: Mid-pregnancy ultrasound?

I'm 13 weeks right now. I got my first ultrasound at 8 wks and the dr told me I won't get another one until 18 weeks to determine the gender. I heard a lot of ultrasounds aren't good for the baby so that's why they're limited

Q&A: Mid-pregnancy ultrasound?

I had an ultrasound at 10 weeks (first doc appointment) And another at 16 weeks. Now I have one next week at 20 weeks. Not because of complications, all just because thats how my doctors do it i guess. I love watching my baby grow.

Q&A: Mid-pregnancy ultrasound?

I am from NS, Canada, but it's not standard here to get an US until the 20 week one! They will do one earlier if there is a history of problems, for dating purposes (but I knew exactly my LMP), or if you're over 35. I had my first one today at 20w4d and it was amazing!!

Q&A: Mid-pregnancy ultrasound?

I had my first ultrasound at 10 weeks, then the next at 18 weeks and now I have one tomorrow (23 weeks) really depends on your situation and your OB. Either way I cant wait to find out if it's a boy or girl! At my 18 week ultrasound the baby was not being cooperative >.< />

Q&A: Mid-pregnancy ultrasound?

I havent had an ultrasound yet and Im 21 weeks! They told me when I went to "confirm" I was pregnant that the insurance was cutting down on how many ultrasounds women have... Its CRAP! Im going Thursday(in 2 more days) to FINALLY get my first ultrasound and find out what we're having. So you ladies that have had all kinds of ultrasounds, you are very lucky and blessed.
