Q&A: Mid-pregnancy ultrasound?

I'm scheduled to have an ultrasound soon, in my 20th week. What should I expect to happen, and what's my doctor looking for?

Re: I'm scheduled to have an ultrasound soon, in my 20th week. What should I expect to happen, and what's my doctor looking for?

The Bump Expert

During the mid-pregnancy ultrasound (also called the standard ultrasound), usually around 20 weeks, your doc is basically checking to make sure baby's growing and developing properly. This generally includes taking baby's heartbeat, checking for physical abnormalities, confirming any suspicions of twins or other multiples, measuring the amount of amniotic fluid (to much or too little could signal a problem), checking the location of your placenta to be sure it isn’t covering the cervix, and taking lots of measurements to make sure baby is the right size for his gestational age. (If your babe measures very large or very small, you may be given a new due date!)

The truly exciting part about your 20 week ultrasound (well, besides the assurance that you’re growing a healthy baby)? This is your chance to catch a glimpse of what the little one looks like in there, and you’re likely to get a couple of printouts to show off to the fam! And, if you want to know baby’s sex, this is the moment of truth -- your doc should be able to detect your little one’s girlie or boyish bits on the ultrasound screen (if baby isn’t covering the goods with his or her arms or legs).

I didn't have my first ultrasound until i was 14 weeks. It made me really nervous but it was worth it because everything turned out great!

Q&A: Mid-pregnancy ultrasound?

I have been getting pics since i started going to the doctor at 6 weeks. I am now currently 16 wks expecting twins. I will find out what the genders are Friday, 14th.

Q&A: Mid-pregnancy ultrasound?

I guess it all depends on when you found out you were pregnant. I had my 1st ultrasound at 10 weeks. I have an appointment in a week (I'll be 18 weeks then) I'm hoping I have another ultrasound, so I can see my little one again & hopefully find out the gender :)

Q&A: Mid-pregnancy ultrasound?

Hello....here's my tidbit.....due to it taking 3.5 years to get pregnant....issue was so simple it was silly, but still involved Clomid and Progesterone.....I had an ultrasound at 7 weeks to confirm the heartbeat from my fertility people....and then one at 10 weeks to see heartbeat again because it was too soon to hear it and then with my OB, one at 13 weeks to check on baby...looks like a boy...unless something falls off....and then will have one at 16 weeks to confirm boy status....don't know after that how many I will be able to have. The ultracounds made me feel very secure and reassured in the pregnancy. Everything is going great at 14 weeks and counting. I wanted to have a sono every month for baby book, especially because this is my first and have been very lucky. Good luck to all!-Gwen

Q&A: Mid-pregnancy ultrasound?

I've been getting pictures from my last 2 ultrasounds (8w & 12w) I asked for them though each time. I have about 6 photos so far. I find out the sex on the 24th.

Q&A: Mid-pregnancy ultrasound?

I got my first picture at 5 weeks then 6 weeks ( we thought there was something wrong but it all turned out ok) and another one at 11 weeks when we were doing our genetic testing, we go in on the 25th for our mid-pregnancy ultrasound. we cant wait to find out the gender, but they also mentioned that the sonogram will check the bone structure of the baby.

Q&A: Mid-pregnancy ultrasound?

I have seen the baby every 4 weeks since week 6. If not on the official u/s equipment, my OB has a machine in the office and she looks at baby every time I am there. She even says that if anything ever gets the best of me and it would just ease my mind to see the baby, to let her know and they will show her to me! I love my Dr.!! My 19 week "Standard u/s" revealed the sex, but baby wasn't moving enough to get all of the measurements, so I am looking forward to getting to see the baby again on 28th. I hear all Dr's are different, though. My friend, who goes to the Dr in the next office over from mine, will not get to see her baby even on the first OB visit at 12 weeks. She is not happy abou it!

AGSkelton |

Q&A: Mid-pregnancy ultrasound?

I had a sonogram done on my first visit at 9 weeks. She was just a little lima bean that that time. I had an ultrasound done this week, now that I'm at 15 weeks, and they think it's a girl! I still have my mid-term u/s next month to check development. We requested the early u/s due to genetic complications for both my sister and my sis-in-law. Good news is our little one looks healthy!

Q&A: Mid-pregnancy ultrasound?

I got an u/s when I was 6 wks along (and in the ER for abdominal pain). Got another one when I was 13 wks along. I go back tomorrow @ 17 wks and hopefully I can get an u/s and find out the gender as well! It's a pain waiting inbetween appts just to see the little one!

Q&A: Mid-pregnancy ultrasound?

I havent gotten to see my baby yet and I'm 13 weeks. My dr wont do and ultrasound till I'm 20weeks. He hasent even tried to hear the heartbeat yet. Kinda disapointed in my dr but I'm guessing he knows what he is doing. We go in on the 21st of Dec to hear the heartbeat for the first time. Its our first baby and I feel I missing out on so much after readind all about your ultrasounds. Hope we get to hear the heartbeat this apt or I might think about changing dr's. Good Luck everyone!

Q&A: Mid-pregnancy ultrasound?

I found out I was pregnant at just shy of 4 weeks, the wonders of early tests! I didn't have my first ultrasound until I was almost 21 weeks. Both my doctors (I switched after my first appointment) said that it was standard to wait until then unless there was some reason to check earlier. I don't know if thats always the case and it was so hard to wait that long but there really wasn't any medical reason to check earlier.

donnagirl87 |

Q&A: Mid-pregnancy ultrasound?

I had an ultrasound at 8 weeks to see the heartbeat and I just had my 2nd one at 18 weeks. Everything looked good and it a boy! but they did say i have placenta previa so they will be doing multiple followup ultrasounds....and i'm not complaining at all!

jpearce327 |

Q&A: Mid-pregnancy ultrasound?

Its better when your a lil farther on, when your under 14 weeks the baby looks like a bean, all that they look for then is the hearbeat. at the 20week ultrasound they look for babys organs forming any birthdefects with the spine and gender if the baby is in the right position....

ashleyann8387 |

Q&A: Mid-pregnancy ultrasound?

I had an ultrasound when I was 10 weeks pregnant (in the ER) due to abdomen pain, which was only a Urinary Tract Infection. Which is common in the early stages of pregnancy! The ultrasound tech said everything look okay. I was very happy i got to see the baby! Now i am 19 weeks and next Thursday I have a ultrasound app.! I cannot wait until then! I cannot wait to see the sex of the baby (I hope it is a little girl!!) but as long as the baby is healthy then thats the most important thing. A lot of people think it is a girl but, the only way I can see if next week! But, I also think knowing the baby is healthier is the MosT important thing at this time.

amandabirk |

Q&A: Mid-pregnancy ultrasound?

I guess it all depends on your doctor, the equipment available in their office, and your insurance. I am getting my first ultrasound at 20 weeks, and man is it hard to wait that long, but I would rather not have to get one earlier if the reason I would be getting one is due to complications. ONly two weeks to go!

cmhicklin |

Q&A: Mid-pregnancy ultrasound?

i had my first ultrasound at 7 1/2 weeks and my second was at 12 weeks. the second was part of the testing for down syndrome but it was still great to see the baby. my next one will be in less than two weeks (19 weeks along) and hopefully we will be able to see the baby's gender! I've also gotten to hear my babies heartbeat every appointment since the 11th week. it is the greatest sound you'll ever hear!

Sweeti7307 |

Q&A: Mid-pregnancy ultrasound?

I had my first at 7 wks in my ob's office and my second at 11 wks. And then at 13 wks, I had the detailed first tri testing one. I got pics from them all.

jesfaust |

Q&A: Mid-pregnancy ultrasound?

I also had my first one at 7 weeks, just wanted to make sure the baby was where they were suppose to be and measure. It helped since I found out my due date was 2 weeks later than they first thought. Although, I agree, the baby looked like a bean with a heart beat. I swear I saw 2 dots that looked like eyes, but my husband just said it was just wishful thinking. We got to see the baby again at 14 weeks for testing and it was nice to know everything looked good so far! Only three more weeks until we get to find out boy or girl, well, hopefully our little one will cooperate.

JulietBair |

Q&A: Mid-pregnancy ultrasound?

Also got pictures from all of them.. If you have an ultrasound, I would ask for pictures if you would like them to share.. = )

JulietBair |

Q&A: Mid-pregnancy ultrasound?

I had one at 16 weeks - 1st because we are going on a Med. Cruise in two weeks and 2nd because I will be "advanced maternal age" when baby is born. I was not leaning towards having one now and again at 20 but I am GLAD I DID (and glad my Dr. pretty much told me I was having one at 16wks) and it was such a relief to see the baby, the heartbeat, the organs, the arms and legs...I am much more relaxed about my pregnancy now:). I'll be having another one at 20 wks when we get back from vacation.

cbbabygirl27 |

Q&A: Mid-pregnancy ultrasound?

I am 16 weeks and have had 3 ultrasounds but only cuz i was having complications in the begining but now everything is great. It just really depends on how the pregnancy is going, with my first i had 2 ultrasound the whole pregnancy. Dont worry if the doctor thought something was wrong you would have an ultrasound. :)

amag22 |

Q&A: Mid-pregnancy ultrasound?

I was exactly 16 weeks on Tuesday and I get my first ultrasound next Thursday and I have mixed feels on rather or not i want to know what I'm having. Being a single mom to be is kind of difficult because of having to make the last minute decisions. I want to know because it would make shopping and baby shower that much easier but not knowing means in 5 1/2 months I have a little surprise.

mnmarsh |

Q&A: Mid-pregnancy ultrasound?

I'll be 16 weeks at the end of the week. When I was pregnant with my son, I think I was about 22 weeks or so when I had my first ultrasound. This time around I want to wait until about the same amount of time because I was able to get great pictures of him and was able to see clearly (without the 3D) what I was having. I strongly recommend that you wait if you can.

lmarie2011 |

Q&A: Mid-pregnancy ultrasound?

I think you all are pretty lucky to have ultrasounds so early on, and for some of you so often! I won't get my first ultrasound at my doctor until 20 weeks. But I'm planning to get a 3D ultrasound separately at about 17 weeks, so that will be my first chance to see baby. It's definitely hard to wait this long, but my doctor says everything is progressing normally and we heard the heartbeat on the Doppler just fine, plus my insurance only pays for the 20 week U/S.

clcaulfield |

Q&A: Mid-pregnancy ultrasound?

For me, I had an appointment when I was 10 weeks to hear for the heart beat, if one wasnt heard using their little instrument then I would have gotten an Ultrasound. We actually were able to hear the heart beat without an Ultrasound. I opted to do the testing for Down Syndrome and Spina Bifida so I had the first half of the ultraounds when I was 12 weeks pregnant. I almost couldnt have the test done because the baby was too small. The doctor said the baby has to be so many cm or mm long but he finally got the baby to pass for the testing. I have the second set of ultrasounds scheduled for Jan 31st, by then I will be going on my 18th week and he said at that time he will be able to tell me the sex of the baby which is super exciting. Im pretty sure im going to have a boy since I want a girl but so many people I know around me are all having girls, no boys.. so I figure I will be the one to end up having a boy. Thank god they make cute boy clothes!!

Q&A: Mid-pregnancy ultrasound?

I had my first pics at 10 weeks...so cool but i cant wait for 20 weeks!

Q&A: Mid-pregnancy ultrasound?

They usually don't do an u/s til 20 weeks unless there's something wrong. I had a prior miscarriage and was supposed to have a 6 week u/s. For some reason it didn't happen so when I went in at 10 weeks the doctor said I'd have one then. Then he pulled out the doppler and found the heartbeat right away! So there was no need for the u/s. I was excited to know it was healthy, but I really wanted to see my baby!

Erbear1984 |

Q&A: Mid-pregnancy ultrasound?

I had my first u/s at 12 weeks because my periods were irregular and they wanted to give me a more exact due date. We all thought I was only 10 weeks, but the u/s confirmed that I was really 12 weeks. I don't get another u/s until I am 20 weeks. I can't wait to see my little one again! This is my first pregnancy and can't wait to find out if the baby is a boy or girl. Four more weeks!!!

Q&A: Mid-pregnancy ultrasound?

I had this u/s (also called anatomy scan) at 17wks 2days. The tech told us it was a girl and that she had long legs. She also measured bones, brain, and made sure the umbilical cord was normal.

Q&A: Mid-pregnancy ultrasound?

I had my first ultrasound at 9-10 wks and i was able to hear my baby's heartbeat and see him..That was the most wonderful thing I had ever experienced in my life. Tomorrow I turn 25 and have another appointment. I pray to god that I get a good birthday present by finding out the sex of my baby!! Fingers crossed :)

barbiechick7686 |

Q&A: Mid-pregnancy ultrasound?

When some say gender scanning, is that a special appointment you made to find out the sex or is that what you call it because thats what your doctors is going to do at that appointment? Ive heard that you can pay to find out the sex of your child and just wanted to know!

barbiechick7686 |

Q&A: Mid-pregnancy ultrasound?

Q&A: Mid-pregnancy ultrasound?

The doctor does a very in-depth ultrasound where they check to see if the arms and legs are appropriate length for age, they look to see if the heart is developing correctly and they can see the four chambers. They look at the lips to see if they see any abnormalities. The best part is the pictures. You get tons of pictures if you ask for them. I was 18w 6d when I had my mid pregnancy u/s and they were able to tell us the sex. We were so excited to find out we were having a baby girl and she was one healthy.

I had my first ultrasound at what I thought was 7 1/2 weeks. When the dr went in, I saw what looked like a baby instead of a lima bean, and the dr said I was actually 11 1/2 weeks! Ooops! Had another one 2 weeks later, and I think my next will be somewhere around 18-20 weeks.

Q&A: Mid-pregnancy ultrasound?

I am 13 weeks, I had my first ultrasound at 10 weeks and another at 12 weeks, but that was just for the NT testing. My next one won't be until I'm between 18-20 weeks as the "standard ultra sound". But so far, the doctor says the baby and me are progressing great. Just a heads up, Insurance only pays for a certain # of ultrasounds, or "medically required ultrasounds" anything you request extra, you will be paying out of pocket.

Q&A: Mid-pregnancy ultrasound?

I had a dating ultrasound at 9 weeks; since we decided not to do any genetic testing, we will have our final ultrasound at 18 weeks to find out the sex of the baby (hopefully!) . In the interm, my midwife checks the heartbeat at every visit so that we know that our baby is healthy, and it helps me to hear that heartbeat to know everything's ok!

Q&A: Mid-pregnancy ultrasound?

I live in Hong Kong so maybe the doctors do things a little differently over here. First u/s in week 7 at my first appointment, then week 9 (both vaginal though) and then took the combined screening for Down syndrome + Trisomy 18 a few days ago at week 13. The last one was the first time the doctor did the u/s through my tummy. Pretty cool! Also got a 4D image (as if 3D is not enough, ha!) of the fetus. Do you guys get that in the US as well?

Then we just went back last week at 11 weeks and we just listened to the heartbeat on a Doppler machine but it was awesome & reassuring that there's still a baby in there! I got my first US at 12w3d at maternal-fetal medicine for the 1st tri genetics screening. I got 6 pictures to take home, although 2 of them were in 4D and made my little one look like Spike from the Gremlins! My doctors office doesn't do them until 19-20 weeks unless there is a suspected problem. They look for the anatomy of the baby (arms, legs, neck size, overall baby size, any abnormalities) and of course gender if you'd like! :-)

Q&A: Mid-pregnancy ultrasound?

I go to my midwife every 4 weeks, and I get an ultrasound every time. That's why we were able to tell (99% sure) the gender at 13w5d. We go back at 17w5d, and that's when we'll confirm our suspicions. Baby showed us a clear view of her butt and she definitely didn't have any little "boy parts" but we're not sharing with friends until we've confirmed. And anyone we've told, we're making it very clear that we're not 100% certain.

Q&A: Mid-pregnancy ultrasound?

I havent had an ultrasound yet and Im 21 weeks! They told me when I went to "confirm" I was pregnant that the insurance was cutting down on how many ultrasounds women have... Its CRAP! Im going Thursday(in 2 more days) to FINALLY get my first ultrasound and find out what we're having. So you ladies that have had all kinds of ultrasounds, you are very lucky and blessed.

Q&A: Mid-pregnancy ultrasound?

I guess it depends on your doctor. I'm 19 weeks and still haven't seen an ultrasound but my cousin in 22 weeks and has had 3 ultrasounds. I only get one ultrasound at my midpregnancy which is scheduled in 2 more weeks I'll be 22 weeks- or more?? I'm excited to see if I'm acutally further along and if were having a lil boy or girl. If your early on and haven't gotten an ultrasound yet you can always switch doctors!

Q&A: Mid-pregnancy ultrasound?

I had my first u/s at 9w3d and was given a photo of baby. My second u/s was at 13w and again I received a photo, my next scan is 27 june (approx 18w) am hoping to find out baby's sex then and also to receive another picture for the scapbook. I read in previous comments some of you ladys weren't getting any u/s or photos from your Doc or Ob-Gyn... If this is an issue and you're unhappy you do have the right to speak up or to request new doctors. :)

Q&A: Mid-pregnancy ultrasound?

I am guessing the whole insurance thing/limited scans or not getting a scan until 20weeks must depend where in the world you are because I'm in New Zealand and its common practise here and also in Australia that your first scan is around about 9-13 weeks and that is to take babys measurements and check that the developement is all going smoothly without any problems... They also send you for bloods at 13 weeks to check out the chances of Downs Syndrome etc.

Q&A: Mid-pregnancy ultrasound?

I had my first ultrasound at 11 weeks. I had been told I would have to wait until 20 weeks, but the doc thought it would be hard to hear the heartbeat without one because I am overweight. All is well, baby is doing great and I am healthy too!

Q&A: Mid-pregnancy ultrasound?

I had my first u/s at 10 weeks because I was having cramps. Hubby thought it looked like an alien, but I could make out a head, torso, hands and even little feet, as well as the heartbeat. I had three more ultrasounds in the next three weeks: one for genetic testing, and two to check on baby's heartbeat when I was in the ER with kidney stones. When I switched OB's the new doctor did another ultrasound to confirm the dates I was given. In two days, we go in for the 20 week ultrasound and hopefully find out the baby's sex!! I guess I've had a lot, and it's been nice to see the baby growing, but I would've given them up for no kidney stones!

Q&A: Mid-pregnancy ultrasound?

this is so odd to me that all you ladies had to wait so long to see your bundle of joys. i seen my child at 8,9,11 and 12 weeks. the 9 was done at the hospital with the high tech machine jus to make sure the test done on the 8th was correct. and the 12 was to find out if my baby had d.s.. but yes i cant wait untill my 20 week app. i love seeing my bBY MOVE Around like a little soccor player

Q&A: Mid-pregnancy ultrasound?

I got my first ultrasound when I found out I was pregnant and made an appt to see the dr. I was about 7 weeks along and got my first pic (looked like a dot lol). Then I had another ultra sound when they did the 1st sequential screening test which was when I was 12 weeks along and I got another couple pics and amazingly the baby looked like a baby! I couldn't believe how much he/she had grown in just 5 weeks, it's amazing. I have my next ultra sound at 20 weeks which is June 27th and that is the one where I will find out the sex. So exciting!

Q&A: Mid-pregnancy ultrasound?

I'm 15 weeks now and we had our first ultrasound at 8 weeks (vaginally) and got pix, and again at 12 weeks (normal exterior ultrasound) and more pix! so exciting! I know every Dr.'s office is different, my cousin is 3 weeks behind me and she hasn't had one yet either. The first one is amazing and I will never forget it!

Q&A: Mid-pregnancy ultrasound?

I was 8 weeks when I started to go to the doctor. I got pictures at every appointment except my last one. My next one is my 20 week appointment! I think it really depends on your doctor and even your insurance.

Q&A: Mid-pregnancy ultrasound?

I had my first ultrasound at 7 weeks, a second at 9 weeks and a third at 12 weeks (now in the thirteenth week). From what I can tell from my doctor, the mid-preg u/s is just double-checking the growth and a good opportunity to find out if it's a girl or a boy.

lionessofgd |

Q&A: Mid-pregnancy ultrasound?

I had my first ultrasound at 4 weeks as a confirmation of pregnancy. We couldn't see much then only the yolk sac and gestational sac. We went back 2 weeks later and had another ultrasound. From this the ultrasound tech was able to tell baby from everything else. To us it looked like a bunch of dots. The next visit was at 12 weeks and we had a third ultrasound. It was amazing to see the changes from 6 to 12 weeks. This is when it truly felt real for us that there was a baby. Our next appoint is July 9th 16 weeks but no scheduled ultrasound. We'll have our next ultrasound at 19 to 20 weeks to check the growth and gender :) Don't get discourage if your doctor wants to wait until later for an ultrasound they most likely want to be able to see more detail and start testing processes.

Q&A: Mid-pregnancy ultrasound?

Ultrasounds may depend onthe physician because I had one at 4wks only because I had irregular peiods for the past 10 years since being on birth control shots. Next at 11 wks while seeing the genetic counselors - will have another with them on 7/18- may not have one with regualr OB until after 20 weeks.

Q&A: Mid-pregnancy ultrasound?

My doctor has been wonderful. He did an ultrasound at 5 weeks and we saw the gestational sac. He did one again at 7 weeks and we heard the heartbeat and saw the baby. We had another one at 10 weeks and saw the baby again and heard the strong heart beat (174 bpm!). I'm scheduled to go in again August 7th! Hopefully a month later we will know if it's a boy or girl!

Q&A: Mid-pregnancy ultrasound?

At our first visit the midwife calculated us at 9 weeks, but we couldn't find the heartbeat with the doppler; she said it was just a little early. I had no symptoms so I wanted an ultrasound to check for viability. We got to see our little one and hear the heartbeat (and found out we were only 7 weeks)! The baby didn't really look like anything. We won't have another ultrasound until the 'standard' one at about 20 weeks. Our insurance only covers two.

Q&A: Mid-pregnancy ultrasound?

I had my first US at 12 weeks. I go in for my mid-pregnancy one next week when I'll be 19 weeks pregnant. Then I think they'll have another one in the third trimester. My midwife gave me a pamphlet that spoke about different things and it also said that while US's aren't really harmful, you don't want to get one unnecessarily, (like JUST to find out the baby's gender.) Personally, I don't think there's anything wrong with having an US JUST to find out the baby's gender. But I am really surprised that other doctors offer so many more US's than just the three mine offers. I'm sure I could get more if I put my foot down, but it's not like I'm dying for more US's, I just think it's weird that doctors aren't all on the same page... but of course they're not... aaaaaaaaand now I'm rambling.

Q&A: Mid-pregnancy ultrasound?

I am unsure what ctities all of you live in but there are tons of companies who specialize in ultrasounds. If you want to follow your pregnancy you can but unfortunately will have to pay out of pocket. For me it was very important but I am a worry wart and would not have survived 22wks without seeing my kid.

Q&A: Mid-pregnancy ultrasound?

I had an ultrasound at 5 weeks due to some spotting, which turned out to be nothing. Had another at 7 weeks for same problem and everything was fine again. At 13 weeks had a high resolution ultrasound (nuchal fold screening) for genetic testing and got an amazing profile pic. The US tech said she thought she say boy parts butafter that the baby kept crossing its legs! At 16 weeks had another high res US and this time baby kept its legs open the entire time...it's a boy! so excited to know the sex, bc with my first daughter (who is almost 7) they couldn't tell the entire time! ...and I had quite a few US with her bc I developed gestational diabetes.

Q&A: Mid-pregnancy ultrasound?

You can now maybe find out the sex of the baby, its just a routine check up to make sure the baby is growing at the right speed and that the placenta is moving up. Which you can normally tell when your belly button starts popping out (scary stuff) but is also funny.

toniswain |

Q&A: Mid-pregnancy ultrasound?

I think it depends on your doctor. My OB gave me a transvaginal ultrasound at 5 weeks (which I thought was too early) and since we couldn't see a heartbeat yet I of course got nervous, so she gave me one for 8 weeks. After that I had my sequential screening ultrasound at and will be having my 20 week on the 29th (a little late so we know we'll get the sex) If you ask your doctor for one you can definetly get it, insurance coverage is just the issue. Get your doctor to write you a referral for it so it's covered.

Q&A: Mid-pregnancy ultrasound?

I had an ultrasound at 9 weeks, but it was only because they thought I was 12 weeks along. So it was pretty small! I'm going in on Halloween to have my mid-pregnancy ultrasound and I am soooo excited! For those of you who have done this before, do you know if it's possible to invite more than just your partner? I have invited my parents to come and didn't check with anyone! Just wanna make sure that sort of thing is done.

I had a vaginal ultrasound at 8 weeks to determine the age (we had guessed it was 9 weeks) and got to see and hear the heartbeat. That was my doc's normal routine for the first prenatal visit. I had another at 11 weeks for the NT scan which I opted to do but my insurance also covered. That US was amazing the baby was moving all over the place. I am now 20 weeks and waiting to schedule that ultrasound as I moved cross country and they can't fit me in until next week for an appointment. =(

I've been blessed to have an ultrasound just about every 2-4 weeks due to expecting mono-amniotic twins. This is good thing because I have been able to see my girls grow, but worrisome because each time a us comes up I have to worry about whether or not "all" is well. Is anyone else expecting mono-amniotic twins?? I'm 21wks this week... will love some feedback.... LR

Q&A: Mid-pregnancy ultrasound?

I found out I was pregnant at 4 weeks. My doc scheduled me for my first visit at 8 weeks. I was able to see my bean for the first time at the first visit. We saw the fluttering heartbeat ... such a cool moment! I had my next visit at 12 weeks and was told I was not going to get an us. I was kind of disappointed. The nurse did try to hear the heartbeat using a doppler device. She wasn't able to find the heartbeat so she snuck us in to an us room to make sure the baby was okay and to see the heartbeat. Luckily everything was fine. The baby even moved a few times. Our next visit was scheduled at 13 weeks ( one week later) to do the down syndrome screening. Again, we got to see the baby, hear the heartbeat, and watch it move around continuously. I'm now 15 weeks and am scheduled for my next visit at 17 weeks. I was told by the nurse that we would be allowed only 3 us during our pregnancy. So far I've had a freebie and an extra one with the ds screening.

I'm nearly 18 weeks and expecting twins! I've been blessed to watch them grow via ultrasound weekly from week 3-8 because we did clomid treatments through a fertility clinic. Since then, we get to see them every 2-3 weeks because of some tests and because my stubborn unborn children are too squirmish to get both fetal heartbeats on the doppler during regular check-ups and they send us to the u/s to get the rates. I don't mind tho :o) We found out that we're having at least one boy at week 13, but the other is shy. My boy moves around a lot and I've been feeling the flickers since week 12! I can't wait until we find out the gender of our first babe. I tell ya tho, now that I'm past the 1st trimester, I'm growing like crazy and time is flying by!

Q&A: Mid-pregnancy ultrasound?

With this pregnancy, I had my first US at 5 weeks to confirm pregnancy with bloodwork. Then I had next one at 8 weeks because I had blood clots. I had 3rd US at 11 weeks for screenings. I will have my next one around 20 weeks to see gender; but, unless there is another problem, I won't have any more US. I have had 4 high risk pregnancies prior to this one so I tend to have many US done.

Q&A: Mid-pregnancy ultrasound?

I was told most women are lucky to get 2 or 3 ultrasounds during their pregnancies, but being high risk ( which I am) You usually get one every month. Although there are a ton of docor's appointments to go to, I really enjoy being heavily monitored. It's very comforting and so far (30 weeks) everything has been going very well!

Q&A: Mid-pregnancy ultrasound?

I had my first ultrasound at 10 weeks to confirm a normal live pregnancy. My second ultrasound was at 20 weeks to screen for abnormalities and to find out the gender and get his measurements. My doctor assured me those were the only ultrasounds I needed unless something happens to me or my baby. I'm 36 weeks now, so as long as there's no cause for concern I'll just have to wait until I give birth to see my son again.

Q&A: Mid-pregnancy ultrasound?

I mistakenly thought I was 7 weeks (based on the many symptoms) and went in for an ultrasound, turns out I was only 5 weeks! The ultrasound only showed the yolk sac, so I basically had to worry of the next two weeks until the 7 week to see a heartbeat. Saw it yesterday! Amazing. I would not have wanted to wait until weeks later, it is amazing to see the heartbeat, even if baby does only measure 13mm.

I had my first u/s at 4 wks in the ER due to the fact that I was bleeding heavily. I'm 20w5d today and I have had u/s at 8w, 13w, 14w (woke up bleeding), 16w, 18w, and a 3D u/s at 20w. I think I've gotten so many b/c I have really good insurance through my work and then I have supplemental insurance through my husband via the military. The doctors office knows that everything is paid for 100% by my insurance with no maximums so I think they are sort of milking that and giving me one at every visit. I'm having a little boy and am due 3/28/13. This is our first and we are VERY excited even though it's hard since my husband is missing everything due to being deployed.

Q&A: Mid-pregnancy ultrasound?

My first appointment was at 10 weeks and I was excited thinking that I would get to hear the heartbeat and that they would check the baby's position ect. especially since this is my first pregnancy and was not sure what to expect. I was disapointed when I got to my appointment and all they did was a health history and sent me home. At 12 weeks I was sure we would hear the heart beat, but I was horrified to find out that I brought my husband to witness a papsmear...The only reason why I have been able to get two ultrasounds done and hear the heartbeat so far is thanks to two ER visits due to sever illness since being pregnant. Thankfully, dispite being misrable myself, our little one is just fine and developing normaly. =)

Q&A: Mid-pregnancy ultrasound?

I had my 20 week ultrasound today and it was fantastic. It took longer than expected, about an hour and a half because the baby would not uncross its legs and we wanted to know the gender. Despite being unable to find out the gender, still bumming, we were able to see everything else. They measure the long bones of arms and legs. They measure the head circumference. My doctor the spinal column and different aspects of the brain like e cerebellum. We counted fingers and toes and even though we couldn't get a good profile of its face they measure the nasal bones and the nuchal fold. The heart is looked at in detail including the chambers and the valves. Its truly amazing ti see something you created moving around waving and yawning! The worst part is the full bladder that you need to have at the beginning ( and not being to find out the gender) good luck and enjoy!!

Q&A: Mid-pregnancy ultrasound?

For all you ladies out there wanting to get extra ultrasounds done, there are plenty of places in town that will do these at a small cost to you. I found one that does 3D and 4D pics and webcasts. They also do the simple black and white photos to check the gender of my little one for around $60. So at 15 weeks and 5 days I found out that we are having a little boy. So for peace of mind I had no problem paying out the cash and see my little one.

Q&A: Mid-pregnancy ultrasound?

I think that ultrasounds should be used carefully, because there are some theories and findings that they might be harmful for the very small still developing fetus. So I think your OB was right to wait a bit, so that the baby has time to develop his body more. And whats a few weeks gonna change? What's meant to happen will happen anyways.

I do have to say, my midwife was able to find the heartbeat with the doppler and it was the greatest moment of my life (even though I got to see the little blinking heartbeat in the 6wk U/S). I have never heard a more beautiful sound! In a way, it was better than an U/S. Once my midwife calculated the heart rate (a brisk 170 bpm), I begged her to leave the doppler on a little longer. I could listen to that for hours! I even got to hear some kicks! I joked with hubby that we have a little soccer player in there (not that I can feel anything yet). Turns out, we were able to listen to that amazing sound for almost 5 min! And my midwife said that whenever I wanted to hear it again, I could just come on in and she'd find time for me. I never imagined how important hearing the heartbeat could be. So, even though I can't wait to see the U/S, knowing that I can hear that everything is ok works for me!

Q&A: Mid-pregnancy ultrasound?

I'm in Canada and where I live our first visit to the Doctor is not until 13 weeks or after, and first ultra sound is not usually until 20 weeks unless they have concerns about something. Mine is this week and I can't wait to see my little one. This will be my third babe.

Q&A: Mid-pregnancy ultrasound?

I haven't had an u/s yet, and I am 19 weeks! The doctors office I go to refused to give me one until week 20, so I am very, very excited to see our baby for the first time on May 13th and to find out the gender :)

Q&A: Mid-pregnancy ultrasound?

Why do you think there might be a link between ultrasound and autism? Prenatal ultrasound was once a rare medical practice, reserved for women with high-risk pregnancies. Today, prenatal ultrasound is routine for most pregnant women in developed countries. Often the first picture in the baby's photo album is the grayish sonogram taken at 16 weeks. Ultrasound has also replaced other screening methods for Down Syndrome, performing an ultrasound twice in two weeks, at a specified point in the first trimester, to assess thickness of the neck of the fetus. Results can be predictive of chromosomal abnormalities. Apparently prenatal ultrasound also is performed many times outside of the health care system. How does this come into the equation? I believe that this issue needs to be looked at much more closely, particularly with the increase of non-medical personnel who perform these ultrasounds. A pregnant mother's first sonogram may come from a keepsake ultrasound boutique at a local shopping mall. These boutiques have mushroomed into a huge industry. In 2004 there were 250 boutique centers (4d-ultrasounds.com). By 2006, a single franchise operator, United Imaging Partners, had a network of 90 facilities just in the U.S. (Ostrom, 2006). Keepsake boutiques can be found in every state, including the five states that have no standards, licensure or regulatory provisions for radiologic personnel (ASRT, 2010). Take a look at the map, I find it scary! Further Reading: American Institute of Ultrasound in Medicine

Q&A: Mid-pregnancy ultrasound?

our Dr said we get 4 ultrasounds during the pregnancy -usually around 10, 20, 26, 36 wks, only more if needed. at all the other appts wewill only got to hear the heartbeat but not see the picture which was a bit disappointing for my husband and i. we want to see our baby every time we go in -our first u/s was at 9 weeks and heard the heartbeat at 13. cant wait for the detailed mid-term sono in 2 weeks (at 18wks)

Q&A: Mid-pregnancy ultrasound?

I think it all depends on the doctor. My doc only does one ultrasound around the 20th week. We only get to hear the heartbeat next week in the middle of my 14th week. We did go to my first appt a little late, at about my 10th week, but it seems like this is the norm for the doctor's office. I think they just do it to save the insurance company money. As long as everything's good to go and me and baby are healthy, doesn't matter to me!

Q&A: Mid-pregnancy ultrasound?

most of the time this is when they determine the sex of the baby!! :) If you haven't had an ultrasound yet, your bladder will be full and there will be some pressure that might be uncomfortable, much like when they are checking the baby's heart beat.

Q&A: Mid-pregnancy ultrasound?

being from the UK , it is usual standard practice here that we get one at 12 weeks ( which they call the dating scan to confirm your due date ).. and then another at 20 weeks (which they call the anomaly scan) this is when they check growth of baby and measurement and also when they can tell sex of the baby...im 17 weeks now so close to coming up to my next scan and i am SO excited to find out sex of the baby

Do they do a vaginal ultrasound as well?

Q&A: Mid-pregnancy ultrasound?

I am 23 weeks pregnant with my first. I was hospitalized for dehydration when I was 8 weeks, they did a vaginal ultrasound then to check to make sure there was only one baby since I was so sick (only one baby!). I then had another ultrasound at 14 weeks then one at 21. I am now going to have a FOURTH ultrasound at 24 weeks since he measured too small on the last.

Q&A: Mid-pregnancy ultrasound?

I found out that if you have an NT test, it involves an ultrasound. I was lucky enough that the baby wasn't cooperating the first time around, so I got to go back 2 days later for another ultrasound! It was so wonderful to get to see my baby twice in one week, and I have now had a total of 3 ultrasounds! My next is scheduled at 19 weeks and I can't wait to see how he or she has grown! My advice to Mom-to-be, get an NT test so you can see your baby again!

Q&A: Mid-pregnancy ultrasound?

Doctor thought we were further along than expected. So we had an ultrasound yesterday at 18 weeks, 2 days. Expect complete discomfort. Wanted to "do it up right" and get a good picture so probably drank a bit too much water! Little did we know, we were carrying twins in there! The session went twice as long and I have never had to pee so bad in my entire existence. Lots of measurements taken of the babies heads and bodies, including leg bones, and getting the heartbeat. We live in a rural area and I suspect the technology available wasn't so great but we have active twins and were unable to see the gender. The technician stated we would have to have lots more ultrasounds, though, so we're excited! By the way, we did not even a little bit suspect twins! Like learning we were pregnant all over again! Oh, the emotions involved!

Q&A: Mid-pregnancy ultrasound?

If anyone lives in Minnesota near the Twin Cities area....I can get you a free Ultra Sound. I go to school for Ultra Sound and we are always looking for moms to practice on. We don't do any diagnosing, so you get lots of fun pics and we can usual see gender if baby was hiding it at your 20 week. You can come visit us as much as you want and we love to have you. Just call Argosy University at (651) 846-2882 and make an appointment.

Q&A: Mid-pregnancy ultrasound?

I have my mid pregnancy ultrasound this Friday. I`m very excited as this is the first time my husband will see the baby. We are NOT finding out the gender. I wait will be hard again but it`s so worth it to find out the gender when the baby is born. There are few good surprises in life.

Q&A: Mid-pregnancy ultrasound?

I really think it depends on your doctor and insurance because i am 14 weeks and I've had 3 already and my next one is in 2 weeks. My cousin on the other hand is 13 weeks and she's had one and won't have another one until 20 weeks!

Q&A: Mid-pregnancy ultrasound?

You can usually request to have an US at any time(there is an option when I call the doctor to schedule an ultrasound), but they are costly. In the US it usually depends on the state and the doctor. I knew a woman in NY who saw the baby every time she went in and here in IN they usually just do one to confirm between 8 and 10 weeks and the 20 week unless there are complications. I think this is the most frustrating part of being pregnant because you see people on TV being big and having ultrasounds and especially with this being our first, we did not know what to expect. The only reason we had an US the same day was because my husband was leaving the Europe following week for work (2 weeks) and they were able to squeeze us in before he left. In our office the transvaginal US is part of medical imagining next door at the hospital and not in the office.

Q&A: Mid-pregnancy ultrasound?

A lot of it also has to do with your insurance company. Mine covers only one ultrasound, at 20 weeks, unless "something's wrong". Thus, I am okay with having only one, because I'd rather not here that "something's wrong".

Q&A: Mid-pregnancy ultrasound?

I am so glad that I am not the only one who has seen baby. I am 12 weeks and have had two apointments already. They have not done an ultrasound or checked for the babies heart beat. All my mommy friends have told me they got ultrasounds at almost every appointment. I have an ultra sound scheduled for next week but that is only because i chose to do the first trimester screening. If I hadnt chose that I wouldnt have an ultrasound until the end of October at my next appointment when I will be 17 weeks! Its my frist pregnancy and this momma wants to see baby!!

Q&A: Mid-pregnancy ultrasound?

I have my next ultrasound in a week and it is for my 18th week. I have only had one so far when I was two months (couldn't see much!) so I'm excited and my doctor said they're doing the 18-20week one because they can look at 'full anatomy' and possibly sex. Also it's always to make sure everything looks good!

Q&A: Mid-pregnancy ultrasound?

I found out when I was 6 weeks and 3 days, I went to the ER for lower stomach pains, which I thought were ovarian cysts, but me and my boyfriend found out right in the ER! We had an ultrasound done that day just to make sure the baby was in the uterus and not in the fallopian tubes.. so we got a pic from that ultrasound, then I had another one at 8 weeks and I got another pic! I went in at 10 weeks for my first appointment and they said they weren't going to do one, so I'm assuming my next one will be at my 20 week appointment for the mid-pregnancy ultrasound... but at my next appointment I do want to hear the heartbeat since at this point I've only seen it beating on the ultrasound screen. I can't wait to hear it! I know it'll make me cry!

Q&A: Mid-pregnancy ultrasound?

I had an internal ultrasound at 8 weeks (my first appt) to see that there was a heartbeat with the nurse (because the baby is too small to use a Doppler) and a belly ultrasound with my doc at week 8 to double check the due date. I did not get photos the first time but got photos of the baby sucking his/her thumb at 8 weeks. I am due for my mid pregnancy ultrasound next week at 19 weeks. We are so excited to find out the sex! My doc allowed us to video the sonagram screen during the 8 week appt. but my mid pregnancy ultrasound will be in radiology not with my doc. So we are not sure if the cell phone rule will be strict. Anyone know?

Q&A: Mid-pregnancy ultrasound?

I've been getting ultrasounds once a month from a friend who is training to be an ultrasound tech. (Also partly because DH just switched jobs and we won't have health insurance until I'm about 20 weeks. Since I can't get to the doctor yet, it's been really reassuring to see that everything's okay.) If you have a school in your area and want free measurements, it's a great way to go!

Q&A: Mid-pregnancy ultrasound?

If you go to a doc that has not given you an unltrasound and you want one .. go to the hospital and say you feel like something is wrong and tell them you haven't had an ultrasound they will give you one and show u the baby .. also you can buy an at home fetel Doppler which allows you to hear the babys hear beat at anytime .. I have one and it is very reassuring

Q&A: Mid-pregnancy ultrasound?

I had my first sonogram at 10 weeks:) I will go back and hopefully get another pic at 15 weeks!

Q&A: Mid-pregnancy ultrasound?

I had my first US at what turned out to be 6 weeks (they thought it was 8 weeks, so new due date). I will have another at the mid-pregnancy point (I'm hoping I can get it at 17 weeks, otherwise it will be around 19-21 weeks). Part of it may be the doctor, every dr. is different, but it could also be insurance -- I know mine only pays for 2 unless the dr needs more for medical issues. So if you don't get one every time, it could be a money thing.

Q&A: Mid-pregnancy ultrasound?

My first U/S was at 7 weeks for a dating. I was uncertain exactly when I got pregnant. I remember my last full menstrual cycle was in January which at the time I went would of put me at 10 weeks not 7. What made them do a dating U/S was the fact that my February cycle was not usual it was nothing but a few spots here and there over a course of a few days. To me I feel I should be considered at that point 8 weeks but they said the embryo at the time was only measuring the size of a 7 weeks old. I'm about to go in for a 14 week visit in 2 days and I am curious to know if my DR will be doing an U/S to check the heart beat.

Q&A: Mid-pregnancy ultrasound?

Ive had a ultrasound at every appt so far. Some of it is due to me being high risk and I lost a baby last fall at 17wks. So my dr has done one at every appt im 18wks with this pregnancy and hoping to find out baby's gender next Tuesday. Good Luck to everyone!!

Q&A: Mid-pregnancy ultrasound?

I am opting not to have an ultrasound unless it is medically needed. There is more radiation in an u/s than in the airport machines. I am so thankful that we have the ability in emergency or medically needed situations, but also glad that we all have a choice in how we care for ourselves and our babies! I have heard the heartbeat tho! :)

Q&A: Mid-pregnancy ultrasound?

I had an emergency ultrasound at 13 weeks, it confirmed that the baby was fine. I am now 16 weeks and my doctor has yet to schedule or say when I will find out what I am having. With my first child I found out at 19 weeks and that was only because i did not know i was pregnant. Does anyone else know about when I will find out? How many weeks?

BabyNumTwoo |

Q&A: Mid-pregnancy ultrasound?

your first ultrasound totally depends on your provider and what they offer. my OB practice does an in office transvaginal ultrasound at 8 weeks, and then depending on the type of fetal screening you choose you have one around 12 weeks (NT screening) or 18-20 weeks (anatomy screen). But, my bff that is pregnant is almost 8 weeks, but has already had 2 ultrasounds because she is high risk and had a molar pregnancy five months ago.

Q&A: Mid-pregnancy ultrasound?

I actually have two sets of u/s pics already, and I'm only 13 weeks. I had gone through a miscarriage earlier this year, so my docs are just making sure everything else with this pregnancy is going well. So far, it is! I had the tests for Neuchal Translucency/Trisomy done since I'm 40, so I have more pics than usual. This is all great, because I'm a photographer and love having all these pics already! Can't wait for my 20 week u/s, too. I love seeing them move around. Makes me smile so big!

Q&A: Mid-pregnancy ultrasound?

I am on my 3rd child (15 weeks) and with all my children we did not get an ultrasound until 20 weeks. I'm sure it depends on health background and insurance but as far as I know it is totally normal to wait until you're mid pregnancy.
