Q&A: Maternity photographer?

How should I go about choosing a maternity photographer?

Re: How should I go about choosing a maternity photographer?

The Bump Expert

Most pregnancy photo shoots happen six to eight weeks from your due date, so there's almost no room for error if you don't like the results or the photographer makes a mistake. Scheduling a re-shoot before baby's born can be tough or even impossible. Here are a few tips on choosing the perfect maternity photographer.

Find a specialist
Look for someone with extensive experience or -- even better -- someone who specializes in pregnancy photographer. Experienced shooters will be familiar with the most flattering angles for your pregnant body, and know how to focus on your belly while deemphasizing other (also expanding!) body parts like your hips, arms and legs.

Ask about editing
Make sure the photographer is thoroughly involved in the editing and photo selection process -- this is an important step towards the finished product and represents about half of your cost. The photographer should be able to expertly guide you to the best and most unique photos, and give suggestions for cropping and finishes. Check the photographer's website and portfolio for similar or redundant images (which indicates a lack of creative artistry) to evaluate his or her expertise.

Go for film
Ask whether the photographer uses film or digital. I recommend film, because dark room prints have superior quality to digital. Film prints are also archival, whereas digital prints will likely fade over time. Though film is more expensive than digital, the quality and longevity is worth it.

Check referrals
If you weren't personally referred by someone who already used the photographer and has a positive recommendation, ask for several referrals to contact. These might be posted on the website.

Consider it all
Think about both artistry and personality when selecting your photographer. Finding someone whose work you love and who you love to work with is the key to capturing a beautiful keepsake image.

re: Q: Maternity photographer?

I'd like to correct Jennifer on her comment about only choosing a maternity photographer who shoots with film. I myself am a wedding photographer, who is now pregnant, who shot with film for 12 years and digital for 8 years. Film/dark room prints are not "superior" to digital. Dark room prints are great in quality as is digital. If the photographer using digital is a true professional they will use archival inks and papers that will last just as long as a darkroom print. That being said, it truly comes down to personal preference. Before choosing a photographer, meet with them and take a look at their work. If you are comfortable with him/her and love their work you will be happy with the end result whether it be film or digital.

Q&A: Maternity photographer?

I am with Nikor on this one! I am a professional photographer, and while I do not "specialize" in maternity. I generally have 1 maternity session a month. Regardless of what you are shooting there is slight difference in film and digital that is only apparent to the very very trained eye. I was trained with shooting film and made the switch to digital 2 years ago. Not one client noticed or cared. More importantly I was satisfied with my prints. I suggest finding a photographer by looking at their style and work as a whole, then make sure you have a nice chat with them about what your are wanting and expecting. You will have a much better experience with someone you are comfortable around. As for the timing, listen to you body. I have had women who were miserable and could barely move throughout the session becuase they waited so long. The size of your bump is not nearly as important as what is inside! :)

Q&A: Maternity photographer?

I am wondering who wrote this article... I can't imagine a photographer who wasn't involved in the editing process... all the photographers I researched when I was searching for the right one had great work, and in order to do that, and be the artists that they are, they have to edit the photos and make them the way they look. And why film? My photographer used digital and they look fantastic. And I was able to purchase the CD after she retouched the photos I selected for my coffee table book of the session. She was great - and I chose her for the following reasons - which I think are really important in choosing who you're going to have shoot your pictures. 1) I liked her style - all the photographers had their own style 2) She was a nice person and I knew she'd make us feel at ease. Her blog showed this. 3) Her rates were better than the other two I was considering 4) She was recommended by a friend at work and from that point on - after looking at all the pricing and asking a few questions (I wanted to make sure I could purchase the CD if I wanted to) I left it up to her because she obviously knew what she was doing. :) Here's her website if you want to see her work - I think the photos I'm using on here of my little Jacob's feet is on there! http://fellephotography

Q&A: Maternity photographer?

I am also a professional photographer and while I don't specialize in maternity photos, I have done them, along with weddings, newborns, family sessions, etc. I find it interesting the photographer answering this post said to choose someone who shoots with film. I think you will be hard pressed to find a photographer that still shoots in film. I'm sure they are out there, but almost everyone has switched to digital. And the quality is still the same. I echo some of the other poster's (photographers) comments about doing your research and finding someone you are truly comfortable with.
