What can I do to get rid of bloating and indigestion?

Re: What can I do to get rid of bloating and indigestion?

The Bump Expert

Trust us, we feel your pain. You can blame these not-so-fun pregnancy symptoms largely on the hormones your body is producing (what else is new?), specifically all the estrogen and progesterone. Your body’s making more of both now to relax smooth muscle tissue. Unfortunately, this causes your gastrointestinal tract to relax a little too much, leading to side effects like bloating, indigestion, constipation, stomachaches and, yes, all that horrific gas you’ve been having lately.

But sadly, you can’t blame it all on the hormones. Believe it or not you could actually be adding to your own discomfort just by what you’re eating or what you wear. Here’s a list of the most common causes of bloating and indigestion during pregnancy.

See if you’re guilty of a few of them (or all of them!):
• Eating greasy, fatty, or highly seasoned foods
• Drinking too much caffeine -- chocolate, soda, coffee, or other drinks
• Eating big meals
• Eating too fast
• Lying down/not moving much after eating
• Wearing restricting clothing

Sound familiar? Try these tips to help cut back on the bloating:
• Eat several small meals throughout the day
• Pace yourself while eating and drink less during each meal
• Drink water throughout the day and avoid caffeinated drinks
• Try to avoid lying down following a meal. But if you’re totally pooped, at least prop up your upper body with some pillows when you lie down.
• Wear loose and comfy clothing

If you’re still suffering, talk to your doc immediately to see if maybe something else is to blame.

Q&A: How can I get rid of bloating and indigestion?

Liquid antacid like Maalox works much better than Tums. I was eating 6-8 a day then my doctor told me the citric acid in Tums just makes the heartburn come back again and again. Now, I use the Maalox and only need one maybe 2 times a day. So much better. a href="http://daisypath.com/">Daisypath Anniversary tickers

Q&A: How can I get rid of bloating and indigestion?

I've found that it helps to drink lots of water and eat smaller meals more frequently. In addition, I find it helps to eat my last meal of the day no later than 6pm or so that way I have plenty of time to digest.

Q&A: How can I get rid of bloating and indigestion?

I've noticed that I cannot eat as much at each meal because I am eating more throught the day. I'm serving myself a little less at main meals. Eating slowly helps and more water.

Q&A: How can I get rid of bloating and indigestion?

No matter what I do I have been bloating like crazy. My stomach gets bigger and bigger throughout the day. So far the only thing I can do is loosen my belt a notch and deal with it. I guess it is kind of nice to look 3 months pregnant, when in fact I am only 5 weeks. People notice and comment how cute I am with my belly (I am normally very slender).

Q&A: How can I get rid of bloating and indigestion?

I'm the same way. I am almost 3 1/2 months, but I did bloat before pregnancy and it's worse now. I work out 4-5 days a week and was already used to eating mini snacks/meals throughout the day. But it seems that maybe I either need to slow down or eat less at the actual meal time. It's more uncomfortable and find myself constantly trying to hold my stomach in as I sometimes look like I'm 5 months pregnant! :\

Q&A: How can I get rid of bloating and indigestion?

I'm so glad I'm not alone in this! I thought something was wrong. I'm 4 weeks along and the bloat just started this week. So uncomfortable and looks like I"m 3 months! It also increases throughout the day. Between the bloat and cramping I only hope that it's not going to be like this for the entire 9 months! Fingers crossed! I'll try the above tips about eating less and smaller meals more often.

Q&A: How can I get rid of bloating and indigestion?

I feel the same way karleen! I am also just 4 weeks but feel like at 9 months! My doctor said its totally normal and actually a good thing as it means the progesterone levels are high so it's good for the baby. This week I got a lovely indigestion too very uncomfortable but will wait until my 6 week ultrasound to start taking tums or doing anything about it. I guess it's just part of the journey.

so glad I'm not alone. I am 7 weeks and feel SO bloated and miserable. I look like I'm 3 months and my husband but his hand on my belly yesterday and said "oh look, you have a baby bump already!" ...not very great for my self-esteem.

Q&A: How can I get rid of bloating and indigestion?

Any advice for eating several small meals a day, such as what to eat and how much of it? I work the front desk of a hospital and some days I'm here for 12 hours...this makes me think very negatively on my ability to eat properly!!

Q&A: How can I get rid of bloating and indigestion?

I work for the government in an office that requires a lot of interaction with people, but I just stash a ton of snacks around the office! I have candy for my weak moments, BAGS of carrots and precut veggies with a tub of dip, and Yogurt to ward off the nausea. I also have my water bottle constantly full. I don't have shame in making people wait for me to eat my little snack. Most of the ppl here know and if they give a "look" I just rub my belly and say he's hungry. I've learned from some strong women that I need to learn to be unapologetic during this time. I'm ALWAYS saying I'm sorry to ppl in my "normal" state, so now I'm learning NOT TO. I repeat in my head "my baby is more important than this [insert everyday situation, i,e meeting]!". It's not easy, but good luck!!

Q&A: How can I get rid of bloating and indigestion?

I'm 6 weeks along and feel as big as a house. My body is swelling and I am tired, crying about 10% of the time and I am miserable. I know this is for answers to the questions but I need so serious advice! And is there a good DVD for exercises I can pick up. Scared and excited because this is my second child after 3 miscarriages and I'm 42 so any advice would be wonderful.

Q&A: How can I get rid of bloating and indigestion?

Ok so I too have so much bloat and I've gained 5 pounds! The only thing that helps for me is passing gas...my husband just loves this as he thinks its a contest now! I will try smaller meals and eating earlier. Glad to know maybe I don't have to rush out and buy maternity clothes yet at 5 weeks:)

Q&A: How can I get rid of bloating and indigestion?

This was the first real day of the bloating for me. I appreciate reading that I'm not alone and that this is normal. I definitely feel bigger than I should right now!

Q&A: How can I get rid of bloating and indigestion?

Just got my BFP today with a HPT, so I'm guessing that I'm about 4-5 weeks, I've been bloated and miserable for at least the last week. I didn't know or even think about it being pregnancy bloat until my boobs started being sore a few days ago. I'm glad to know that it starts this early and I'm not just crazy. Will definitely try lots of water and smaller meals, hope it helps!

Q&A: How can I get rid of bloating and indigestion?

So Jannet, were you able to get rid of the indigestion? My wife is facing a similar problem but I couldn;t find any reliable guide on how to get rid of it. I guess your time has already passed and if you were able to beat it somehow, let me know. I found an article on Get rid of all your problems website but I want more help. Can you guide me?

Q&A: How can I get rid of bloating and indigestion?

I am now 14 weeks pregnant with my first and I think the indigestion and bloating along with the constipation have been the lingering symptoms now that I'm past the relentless n/v I had for two months straight. I feel like I'm six months pregnant and look like it by the end of every day! I have never been one to like taking medications at all, but my doctor has started me on omeprazole 20mg twice a day. Ive read and heard from others that this is safe during pregnancy and fact is...I;m willing to try anything to not be so miserable. The indigestion has gotten better, the bloating however still remains. I am trying to slow down during my meals and eating more frequent, smaller meals but nothing seems to help so far with the bloating yet... Good luck ladies!

Q&A: How can I get rid of bloating and indigestion?

I too have had this problem and it gets worse and worse as the day goes on. I have had a few days that are better and there is only thing that I can think that those days have in common: more fiber. However, I can't find any information anywhere to substantiate my discovery. So if you have any info to share about it please let me know.
