Re: Some days the baby kicks all the time and other days he's really quiet. Is this normal?

The Bump Expert

When in comes to in utero activity, there’s a wide range of normal. As long as baby’s overall level of movement is consistent, there’s no need to worry. If you’re in your second trimester or the early part of your third, your baby may be more active than you think. On some days, you simply may not feel all of his kicks and jabs. If you’re worried, try counting kicks over the course of a few days; ideally, you should feel at least 10 within 2 hours. Write down the time you feel the first kick, then note the time of every new one you feel until you reach 10. Don’t expect the same pattern every time you count. Remember, you are looking for significant deviations over the course of a couple of days. If you ever experience a sudden decrease in baby’s movements, check with your OB. She may want to take a look.

Q&A: How often should baby kick?

I'm thinking that's gotta depend on the baby. If I notice that I am extremely busy on a day or two and realize later on that I hadn't felt the baby move I figure it's probably because I've been too busy to stop and notice. When I have time to sit down I feel my baby at least 3-4 times a day. Usually around 10am, 1pm, 6pm and 10 - 11 when I'm in bed. These are all times when I've been sitting or standing completely still though.

Q&A: How often should baby kick?

I feel our boy often at 22 weeks. Usually at night and when I'm eating -- kind of weird. He likes to currently kick my bladder as well. Such a swell wake-up call in the a.m! But yes, I rarely notice when I'm extremely busy as well.

Q&A: How often should baby kick?

I am 22 weeks and I feel our baby girl kick throughout the day. She usually becomes active when my body is resting. (sitting at the computer, on the sofa, or laying in the bed) She also becomes active while I am eating. Some days while standing I will feel a hard thump! It's weird and so exciting :)

Gigi2010 |

Q&A: How often should baby kick?

My little girl is very active at 22 weeks, however it is not entirely consistent. Sometimes more sometimes less. The most predictable times however are also when I lay down to bed or wake up in the AM. During my last sono, I could see bay moving but didn't feel her because she was facing downwards horizontally. So I think it really depends on the baby and it's position in utero. One thing for sure though they will eventually have a steady pattern you can predict. She also moves during meals and afterwards. Sometimes it just feels like shes dancing or having a party in my belly. I have yet to figure this one out:)

Q&A: How often should baby kick?

I am 22 weeks and my little girl kicks nonstop, the only time I don't feel her is at night when I am sleeping, unless I get up to pee then she wakes up too! She is constantly moving and kicks so hard, it feels like my organs are being tied in a knot. I love feeling her move, it is amazing, but I gotta say sometimes it is a nice break when she stops for a few mins. Is it normal for her to be SO active?

Q&A: How often should baby kick?

Wow... I've been feeling my lil one kick and move since I was about 19 wks... the doctor said that I was lucky cause its rare. But as the weeks keep coming the lil one keeps moving. I've also been putting the headset on my stomach so that he/she can hear the music. I think it likes it... I find out the sex of the lil one 2morrow...

Q&A: How often should baby kick?

I'm 22 weeks and I don't notice a lot of movement. Last appointment the heartbeat was still strong so I'm trying not to be concerned. I seem to feel most movement when I have my laptop on my lap. Perhaps baby is jealous of the laptop. :) Should I be more concerned that I'm not feeling much? I have another appointment in about a week and a half - is this something I should talk to my OB about?

JenRH |

Q&A: How often should baby kick?

I also haven't felt much and am 22 weeks this week. I did finally feel specific movement that couldn't be confused for gas yesterday morning but nothing today. My DR said everyone is different and usually once you feel it and can tell the difference between movement and gas you will notice more and more.

Q&A: How often should baby kick?

I've been feeling baby since around 17 weeks although I wasn't totally sure until closer to 18. I'm 22 weeks now and I'm definitely more aware of her movements when I'm still and not busy. Seems like she likes the car since she get very active when I'm driving. But her movements aren't totally consistent and some are stronger than others. I don't think it's necessary to worry if there's no clear pattern or consistency until the 3rd trimester.

Q&A: How often should baby kick?

I am the mother of 3- soon to be 4 children and all of their kicking patterns have been different. My youngest was the most active and she is still the same now @ 2 yrs!! My current pregnancy (22 wks) i feel him kick mostly when I am very still or ready for bed. Kick counting is a good way to keep track of your babys movements and your Dr can tell you the best way and times to do these.Good luck to all the new mommies to be!

Q&A: How often should baby kick?

Well this is my first pregnancy and i felt the first movement at 17 weeks 2 days. (march 26 <3) My baby girl is so active, she kicks 10 times in a minute sometimes. She kicks and moves so much, even mmy doctor was suprised how much she was moving when finding the heart beat with the doppler thingy. In ultrasounds shes moving too, she's so adorable. Honestly, i used to be able to rock her to sleep by walking or moving around... but im 26 weeks now, and there is no stopping her.. i could be doing groceries and shes kicking and dancing around. It makes me so excited to meet my beautiful healthy baby girl.... i love her more than anything...

Q&A: How often should baby kick?

At 20 weeks I had my sono (boy) at least twice, I saw him kick/punch and felt something-so now I know what to feel for.....and he hasn't stopped!! We haven't gotten the headphones yet, but he's quiet in the car ride into work so far ^.^

OctoMom1 |

Q&A: How often should baby kick?

i think it also depends on what you eat. sometimes if you eat foods high in sugar, it can get your baby going. but when there are days that my baby seems quiet, i try to get some juice to hype her up. i will probably start worrying if she wont respond to the sugar rush

Q&A: How often should baby kick?

My baby girl has been kicking since 19 weeks, it's becoming more consistent as I've hit 22 weeks though. Sometimes I don't even notice when she is kicking it's just becoming an every day thing, though the really big thumps take me by surprise! She is usually in motion when I wake up and she's usually paying attention to my bladder, then she is usually calm until I eat a meal and especially at night when I'm trying to go to sleep.

Q&A: How often should baby kick?

I had ultrasound at 20 weeks. The technition told me that with where my placenta is, she was not surprised I could not feel the baby. That it's position would block the little movements. She said it might be a few weeks before I do. Since all the checkups, heartbeat, and movement at the ultrasound have been active, I am holding onto her words. I have felt a few sharp smacks/pains when I bend quickly at the waist to pick something up off the floor. I think that is my baby moving, and protesting his space shrinking suddenly! ; D

Q&A: How often should baby kick?

I am 20 weeks pregnant and just began feeling movement about a little over a week ago. I was confused at first if it was GI movement or the baby and now I can definitely tell when it's the baby moving. He/She kicks randomly throughout the day but mostly later int he day. I can be walking around then suddenly feel a kick....or laying in bad and feel them. I guess I would describe them more so as "thuds". I love the feeling!

I am 24 weeks pregnant right now with my 4th child (third boy) and I started feeling him kick at 14 weeks! It seems as though he is very active my 2 middle children (one boy, one girl diff. pregs.) didn't move as much, so far my first was a little tornado in the womb and so is the baby in the bunch, in fact he is kicking now...very active

Q&A: How often should baby kick?

I am 22 weeks yesterday and didn't start feeling him move until 19 weeks right after finding out it was a BOY. Flutters and summersaults at first now starting to feel like kicks and punches...lol. Doctor told me if I didn't feel anything by 25 weeks then to worry but with first babies some ppl don't feel it till late. Our boy moves when I eat...sitting at work or watching tv, in bed and when I have the laptop on my belly. Think he likes the heat because he moves the same when my husband is holding me. I love it!

Q&A: How often should baby kick?

I am 22 weeks and normally only feel the baby when I am waking up or about to go to sleep. However today I felt a really strong movement like she was completely flipping around! It felt so strange, but encouraging at the same time! I think when you are busy you don't really feel the movements because they aren't too strong yet...

Q&A: How often should baby kick?

I was a heavy person before getting pregnant. I finally felt my baby flutters at 19 weeks. I am 22 weeks now and I feel the baby moving more often but I think being heavy plays a huge role in feeling the baby move. I am patiently awaiting the day when my family and friends can feel the baby move as well, but I think it will be a little while before this happens because of the layers my little karate kid has to kick and jab throught! It is absolutly amazing to feel this little miracle grow inside of me! I still do not know gender because the baby was being shy!

Q&A: How often should baby kick?

I am currently 22 weeks and have noticed that Ivan is moving quite a lot when I am at rest. Mostly during the time that I am doing homework on my laptop. He does not like anything to be on my stomach...the laptop, the cat, or even another baby. I was holding a two month old the other night and he constantly kicked at him until I returned him to his mother! Jealous already! I think that most babies are all different at this stage and completely inconsistent. Ivan reacts to the warmth of my hand on my bare belly and will roll and follow my hand movement.

NewMom69 |

Q&A: How often should baby kick?

I'm at 22 weeks now and she kicks sometimes after lunch, when I'm sitting at my desk, and very frequently when I'm at home and sitting or lying down 6PM-10PM (it seems to be her peak activity time...10 kicks in 2 hours doesn't even begin to cover it - she belts out 10 kicks in 15-30 minutes). One day she worried me by refusing to kick until her father came home. She doesn't seem to mind my cat but he is terrified of her...she kicked the other day when he was snuggling up to my belly and poor kitty ran for the door. I think she's telling me to sign her up for martial arts when she's older...she's still developing and she's already beating up my 25 lb monster of a cat.

Q&A: How often should baby kick?

My doctor said that you won't always feel the movements at 22 weeks even though the baby is moving around in there. The reason is because there is still quite a bit of room in there and until the baby gets bigger I won't be able to feel just how active the baby really is.

scotiahearn |

Q&A: How often should baby kick?

I've heard that the reason you don't feel as much when you're moving is because it sort of rocks the baby to sleep. I am 21 weeks and feel lots of movement right after morning coffee and right before bed. I got so scared the other day because I hadn't felt any movement at all. I started crying and called the doc and everything! He assured me that consistent movement shouldn't happen until week 25 though. Such a relief!

Q&A: How often should baby kick?

I am 22wks and our little girl has a fairly regular routine. She is active early am between 4:30am to 8:00am, lunch time, dinner time, and evening time 8:30am - 11pm. During these time it does not matter if I am relaxing or out and about, she still sticks to her routines. My husband and I often wonder if her activity times predict how she will be when she is born. In other words will she be up and active around the same times as in the womb? Anyone have any thoughts?

Q&A: How often should baby kick?

There hasn't been a day that I haven't felt my baby kick since the first time at 17 weeks, but I have noticed that after eating and while resting the kicks are more noticeable. If you want to keep track of the kicks a good idea is to eat a full meal and lay down for about an hour.

Q&A: How often should baby kick?

My little man (at 21/22 weeks) is kung fu fighting when he decides to cut a rug. I keep swearing he's installed a disco ball in there or something and is running a night club. Babies at this stage, generally sleep/rest 12 to 14 hours a day...but, they do indeed wake up, and kick up some dust. It was two weeks ago I started feeling the flutters, and it was only just last night, I sat and watched him try to kick his way out for 45 minutes...I could physically see my belly jumping from the blows. I wasn't sure he was big enough for that yet...but evidently, he is :)

hopewillcarryme |

Q&A: How often should baby kick?

I felt baby at 16 weeks exactly. I just happened to wake up in the middle of the night with my hand on my belly and baby poked me in the hand twice, in the same spot, so I knew it was baby. After that, I knew what it felt like, so I could feel baby about once a day at that point. I'm now 22 weeks 3 days and baby must be a break dancer or a gymnast from the way s/he moves! Some days I don't pay attention as much, but baby makes him/herself known if I forget long enough.

Q&A: How often should baby kick?

Im 22 weeks and my baby boy is very active. I am usually on my feet all day but I will feel him at least a few times an hour through the day. But he is not as active in the mornings till about 10am. Then he becomes more active especially after I eat and in the evenings. He is the most active after a meal. That's when my husband can usually feel him move right now. But Ive noticed before I go to bed, when I am relaxing, he will move and kick many times. My Dr told me I just have a very active baby which is good! But everyone is different he said. Hope this helps.

first of all, for those moms who wonder if they are feeling it early, they are! Dont listen to everyone who says 'its just gas'. At 14 weeks, I started feeling the flutters, speficically in the morning when I just woke up. because it was so soon, I thought MAYBE it could be gas or something else, but now, Im 19 weeks, and I feel the same flutters, only much harder now. She moves all day too! Its awsome!

Q&A: How often should baby kick?

I'm 22 weeks and felt the first movement around 18 1/2 weeks. It was the most wonderful feeling ever!! Now, I feel the baby move all the time. Like everyone else said it is hard to notice movements while you are busy doing stuff. I notice most movement in the early afternoon, after a meal and at bedtime. Her kicks are starting to get a little harder now, but I still love feeling her move! So awesome!!

michkev9707 |

Q&A: How often should baby kick?

I'm 22 weeks with boy/girl twins and they are very active. I think I feel their movements more because there's less space. Sometimes he'll kick and she'll immediately kick right back like they're fighting over space! Pretty funny. Probably a foreshadowig of how they'll be after they're born. I feel them more at certain times during the day and they seem to have pretty steady wake/sleep patterns and not necessarily att he same time. It's not uncommon for them to be quiet for hours though. She's definitely more active then he is. Sometimes my belly is moving all over and it's hard to tell who is doing what. Just amazing and I absolutely love it!

Q&A: How often should baby kick?

This is my first pregnancy. I felt the first kick at 16 weeks! He has been constantly moving on a daily basis since then. I'm now 31 weeks. I'm all belly and he kicks so hard and often that it puts a lot of pressure on my organs and makes me short of breath! He's also gotten into the habit of lodging himself in my ribcage. His average kick count is 10 in a minute. I guess it makes sense with his dad being a Kung Fu master and Mr, a gymnast. I'm pretty sure we never have to worry about him not getting enough exercise!

Q&A: How often should baby kick?

This is my 4th pregnancy (the 2nd one miscarried), I felt this baby about 12 weeks and I didn't realized until I was at 13 weeks but was a little unsure. I felt a pressure (or hardening). At 15 weeks, an ultrasound confirmed my suspicions. I felt a pressure on one side and when the technician put slide over that area I saw the baby kick. Over time it had gotten stronger. Just last week my husband felt my belly when I was sleeping and told me the next day he felt the baby move! I am 22 weeks now. :)

i dont think you should worry about consistant kicks at 16 weeks. Im 18 weeks and i just started to get real no gas, no excuses kicks. and they arent consistant because shes so small. My advice just enjoy it and expect in a few weeks you will feel baby kicking up a storm.

When I was 14 weeks , I felt a few flutters. Twice in fact & both times were around 2am in morning when I get up to pee. When we go to doctor , the doctor had a hard time finding heart beat. We did a sonogram and found out the baby was so active at 11 weeks he couldnt keep up with baby. LOL Our sonogram tech couldnt get a good picture of the baby because it was constantly moving around. On our 15 weeks check, the same thing happened. Doctor heard the heart beat for 2 seconds & the baby was moving around. He laughed & said wow..this baby is stubborn. The nurses all laughed and couldnt believe it. BUT I cant wait to actually feel the baby move around & kick !!!! Im sure Ill be in pain . especially how active he is LOL

I know these little flutters are the baby because i've never felt anything like it before i was pregnant. My baby seems to move around more, or at least I can feel him/her more when i'm still & especially if i drink something warm, lol. I cant wait until it becomes consistent & my boyfriend can feel it too! God bless & congrats to everyone!
