It’s impossible to say really. While it’s pretty common togain at least a little weight after quitting smoking in general, it doesn’thappen to everyone. Most women will gain about five pounds, since they nolonger have nicotine in their system to suppress their appetite or boost theirmetabolism. But now that you’re gaining weight for baby, there’s no way to knowfor sure how much of that is caused by the fact that you’re no longer smokingand how much of it you would have naturally gained anyway.

But besides all the obvious health benefits to kicking the habit, there’s one more upshot you can look forward to: Food will taste betterthan ever now. If you’re worried about packing on the pounds, though, just make sure to keep active, eat right, and not overdo it when it comes tosnacking or mealtime. You’ll not only keep your weight in check, but also helpcurb bloating, heartburn, or indigestion, which is always a plus.

I quit when I found out and gained about 5 pounds in three months. Just try to keep an eye on what you're eating and get some light exercise in. It may help keep it under control.

Q&A: How much extra weight gained from quitting smoking while pregnant?

I gained a LOT of weight with my last pregnancy, but I quit several bad habits all at once (smoking, heavy drinking, coffee). Even with the extra weight I gained as a result (that eventually did come off) I felt so much better than when I had all those bad habits. I didn't realize how I'd gotten to the point that I was accepting feeling lousy as normal. I feel great now; I especially enjoy how easy it is to breathe! I say don't worry about a small weight gain. Weight gain can be temporary. Lung cancer is not.

Q&A: How much extra weight gained from quitting smoking while pregnant?

I am 20 weeks and have just about quit and I have gained 30 pounds already because I had the lap band weight loss surg. All at once I cut my smoking in half and my fluid was taken out of my band and I started eating normal portions again. I am trying now to get a hold on it by going to the gym and watching the snacking.

Q&A: How much extra weight gained from quitting smoking while pregnant?

I found out I was pregnant at four weeks and quit smoking immediately, the first couple of weeks were tough, but I managed not to kill anyone, lol. At 12 weeks I had gained 30 lbs! This is my third pregnancy, I quit with each but didn't have as hard a time with it as I did this time. I also didn't gain this much weight this fast with the first two. After reading this, I'm thinking the two are probably related. Reguardless of the weight gain, quitting smoking is the best thing you can do for your baby while pregnant and weight gain should not be a factor. You can alway lose the weight, if you have enough will power to quit smoking, you have enough to lose weight. I know it's hard. It's the hardest thing I've ever done. I was not sucessful enough to stay off smokes after the babies were born, but my love for them gave me enough will power to stop while pregnant. Most people don't realize that nicotein is as addictive as heroine. Don't beat yourself up too bad if you struggle with it, but at least make a good effort. Nicotein patches and gum can help, while they're not good for your baby, they are better than cigarettes because smokes actually have several dangerous chemicals other than just nicotein. Take it from a smoker, it's not easy, but you owe it to your baby to try.

So happy to hear these responses! I also quit smoking at 4 weeks pregnant and almost instantly gained 20lbs! But, I'm at 14 weeks now and haven't gained any additional weight. It will even out in the end!

Q&A: How much extra weight gained from quitting smoking while pregnant?

I fount out I was pregnant at 4 wks and after smoking for 9 years I quit immediately as well. I'm 22 weeks and I have gained close to 25 pounds- I quit coffee, cigs, and soda- so I had a lot of appetite suppressants working all at once, and got rid of them all at once. I had not even considered that this might have been a factor in my weight gain, but I am super happy I read this, because it makes sense and I feel better about it now!

Q&A: How much extra weight gained from quitting smoking while pregnant?

I am 26 weeks and quit smoking about four months ago. I have only gained about 12 lbs because I started walking daily when I quit smoking. It helps with stress too.

Q&A: How much extra weight gained from quitting smoking while pregnant?

I quit and a month later was right on track for my weight gain, only about 4.2 lbs. in 4 weeks. I took about 6 weeks to wean myself off of my 9-year-long, pack-a-day habit. I also quit drinking coffee. I made a point to eat as healthy as I could (though I ate A LOT), and walked my dogs every day for at least 30 minutes (hey everyone wins). Just make it a point to be active and eat well.

Q&A: How much extra weight gained from quitting smoking while pregnant?

I quit smoking as soon as I found out. I was four weeks. I also drank coffee every day and was taking a diet pill, I gained about 17 lbs in 8 weeks. But now I haven't gained any weight in the last month and I feel great.....fat but great. It will even out. Be proud of yourself for not smoking.....and let's not pick it up again!!!!!
