Q&A: Glucose tolerance test?

What happens during a glucose tolerance test, and what is it taken for?

Re: What happens during a glucose tolerance test, and what is it taken for?

The Bump Expert

The test, taken as part of the screening for gestational diabetes, will measure the levels of glucose (sugar) in your blood usually between the 24th and 28th week of pregnancy. However, if you’ve had gestational diabetes before, or seem to be at a higher risk genetically, your doctor may choose to run the test as early as the 13th week.

Don’t sweat it: The test is simple and (relatively) painless. When you take the test, your doctor will ask you to quickly drink a sample of Glucola (basically a sweetened drink) that contains 50g of glucose. Make sure you clear your schedule (and a path to the bathroom) the day of your appointment -- you’ll need to wait a full hour while your body absorbs the glucose before your doctor can take a sample of your blood. The results will show if your body has been responding to glucose positively or negatively.

If your results are positive, you'll need to have another screening -- the 100-gram oral glucose tolerance test. During this one you’ll be tested four times over a three-hour time span. (Make sure to pack some good reading material!) If two out of the four test results show abnormality, you will be clinically diagnosed with gestational diabetes and will need to discuss a health plan for the remainder of your pregnancy with your doctor.

Q&A: Glucose tolerance test?

At my doctor they give you a candy bar an hour before they test your blood..I am sure its all the same thing but there are variations to it.

Q&A: Glucose tolerance test?

I had mine today. I had to fast from midnight last night and my appointment was this morning. If I don't eat when I first get up I feel nauseous, and the glucose fluid they made me drink also made me feel nauseous - so the two together was no fun. The drink wasn't as bad as I had anticipated. I just hope it all comes back ok and I don't have to do the 3-hour test!!

Q&A: Glucose tolerance test?

I went and had mine yesterday. I did not have to fast, and he told me to eat what I normally did. I did not have my semi-usual chocolate poptart :) but my other normal breakfast of cereal. I drank the fruit punch version and it wasn't that bad. I have done the orange before for another test and it was not good... An hour later she checked my blood and we had the results in just a few minutes. Mine turned out fine, so no three-hour one for me!

Q&A: Glucose tolerance test?

I've had to fast before at least 5 hours before. Then they gave me a sweet soda drink that I had to chug in 10 minutes wait an hour then get blood taken. I always ask for the Orange one it tastes just like orange soda the cola one is nasty or so I've heard. This is my 3rd and in the next couple of weeks I have to take it for this one. Not bad but really boring to wait take a good book with you.

Do you have to do the glucose test?

djrunjoy | October 13 , 2009 9:25 PM

Q&A: Glucose tolerance test?

It depends on your OB. Some give you the option, while others require it in their offices. But in the end, this is a painless, non-invasive test that could potentially help you out in the end for a healthy pregnancy. I am considered a high risk pregnancy, so my OB did not give me the option. Just ask your OB if it is a must if you are really against it.

my doc gives you a nasty drink you are supposed to drink an hour before your app. then they draw your blood. its really gross and makes your stomach hurt.

Q&A: Glucose tolerance test?

This really isn't a big deal. Just be clear on whether or not you can eat prior to the test. Bring some sugarless gum to pop in your mouth to get the taste of the glucose drink out, and bring a couple good magazines so you're not stuck with the wrinkly old issues in the office.

Q&A: Glucose tolerance test?

what ever you do if they offer you the lemon drink dont take it, they say it tasts kinda like sprite but i guess thats right if it was mixed with a bunch of tooth paiste not a good idea if you havent ate its just plain gross. according to my mothers friend who went threw her last preg. with GD it was worth it. i had to take it twice but if you think about it its not like you have to do it once a month or anything and to be sure your baby is healthy its worth it!

Q&A: Glucose tolerance test?

I did my test the other day, my dr. actually gave me the drink to take home with me at my last appt. so that I can drink it before getting to the office, hence not sitting there for an hour waiting. It did not taste bad at all, it was like a sweeter version of a Sunkist soda. I was also told not to fast, she told me if I was to fast the test would not be accurate to my regular eating habits. Gave me a great sugar high but then I totally crashed! :)

kimmiep103 | January 08 , 2010 12:22 PM

Q&A: Glucose tolerance test?

There is a one-hour test and a three-hour test (if your blood sugar is above normal on the one-hour). The one-hour test is as described below - 50g of sugar. The three-hour test is similar, but you are given a sugary drink with double the sugar - 100g and you have to fast for 12 hours prior to the test. It's disgusting. They take a baseline before you drink the solution, then they take blood each hour for three hours. I took it early on in my pregnancy because I am at risk (40 yrs, family history of diabetes). Bring someone with you as you may feel really lousy. The first time I tried it I threw up after the first hour and they canceled the test! When I re-took the test I was given zofran to curb nausea. You may get nauseous, have a bad headache, get jittery and/or crash and fall asleep towards the end of the test. I took the test beginning at 8:30am and felt lousy until about 3pm. I might be super sensitive to sugar, but in any case you should know what you might be in for! PS My blood sugar levels were normal. I will have to take the test again at around 27 weeks. YUCK.

Q&A: Glucose tolerance test?

Wouldn't the A1C be a more accurate test of blood glucose over the term of the pregnancy? It seems like the glucose test is just extra stress on the body

Q&A: Glucose tolerance test?

I did my test the other day. I had to fast no food or drink, When we got to the lab to have the test done, they said which flavor orange or lime, I said orange. Thinking it would taste nasty wasn't so bad, I drank away then sat beside my husband so we could wait for an hour. My stomach toss and our baby rejected the syrup, need to try again. My husband said our baby hates sweets only milk, water, and juice no sweet drinks.

Q&A: Glucose tolerance test?

Well technically it is to test for gestational diabetes, but for me I got sick. LOL

amberlouise83 | February 08 , 2010 10:11 AM

Q&A: Glucose tolerance test?

The Glucola test is optional in pregnancy, but helps find out if you have gestational diabetes. The glucose syrup you have to drink is HORRIBLE though. I ALWAYS get sick after it. Its like drinking warm/thick sprite... and I mean thick as in the thickness of something like honey or pancake syrup. It's not pleasant at all... :(

AndreaTummons | February 09 , 2010 3:50 AM

Q&A: Glucose tolerance test?

I just had my test today. It wasn't too bad. They made me drink a flat, orange pop-like drink. It was a little thicker than normal pop and wasn't fizzy. I had to drink it (about a cup and a half) in 5 minutes. I recommend chugging it. Then they made me wait exactly an hour and then drew blood. The drink made me feel very jittery and towards the end of the hour I started to get sick to my stomach and get a headache.

I had to drink the orange soda drink and wait an hr and they drew blood from my finger...mine came back saying my sugar was too high so now I have to go take the three hour test! Ugh I hope it comes back normal i'm really worried now :(

Q&A: Glucose tolerance test?

The first test where i took the drink waited an hour then had blood drawn was high. Both of my 3 hr test i was told to eat a regular meal and between 10pm and 12am have a light snack. I was scheduled the 3 hour test, threw up the drink an hour later. The second time i was scheduled the 3 hour test I was given specific orders 2 peices of white WONDER CLASSIC BREAD and 5 and half tablespoons of SMUCKERS GRAPE JELLY. I am proud to say it stayed down and my levels came back normal.

Q&A: Glucose tolerance test?

I work in a lab and i am pregnant on a average saturday i see up to 3 or more pregnant women. I dont agree with these doctors who let you take the drink home its not safe. I had a lady i did a fingerstick glucose on here safety range if your under 160 we give you the glucola she was well in range and drank the glucola 5min later she was have a diabetic reaction her glucose had skyrocketed and i was waiting for paramedics to show up. Are procedure states For the one hour you dont have to fast, even though most of are doctors ask patients to fast for at least 3 hours they can have water during the 3 hours and during the test. for the 3 hour glucose test we do require a 8 hour fast nothing but water.

smjmlove | March 07 , 2010 9:15 AM

Q&A: Glucose tolerance test?

When I was 7 months pregnant with my son, I didn't have to take the test til I was 28 weeks pregnant. what they did in the doctor's office was have me fast all night til I got to the doctor's office, they drew my blood before to check my fasting blood sugar levels. after that they gave me the famed orange soda like drink known as the liquid glucose and had me wait a half hour then they drew my blood again. Luckily I didn't have gestational diabetes and luckily as far as I know it doesn't run in my family and I tested negative.

Q&A: Glucose tolerance test?

I took the one hour test with orange flavored Trutol 50. I had a HORRIBLE experience. About 35 minutes after finishing my drink I began feeling nauseous and weak. 10 minutes later I passed out in the lab waiting room. About 5 minutes after the lab tech drew my blood I began to feel faint again. This time I did not actually black out. But I came VERY close.

Q&A: Glucose tolerance test?

this test is not a big deal I had mine 3 days ago. I did not have to fast before, I had a cheesebuger before going. I went to the lab at the hospital, they gave me a orange drink that tasted like flat orange pop to drink quickly and had to wait an hour. I couldnt put anything in my mouth. (no gum or candy) After an hour they took my blood. Not a big deal, unless you just hate to have blood drawn.

myloveisreal | March 31 , 2010 9:52 PM

Q&A: Glucose tolerance test?

I had my test a week ago and what they do is, they draw your blood before the test, and they give you a drink that's basically nothing but sugar, and you have to drink it all, you have a choice to either sit there for an hour or you can leave and come back. When your hour is over they will draw your blood again. And I was told you can't eat or drink anything after 12a.m. before the test and for the hour you are waiting you can't eat or drink anything.

Q&A: Glucose tolerance test?

I took mine last week, it wasnt too bad i just drank it pretty quickly. I was told to eat an 1 hr before I went in to take the test, stay there an hour and get blood drawn. It was okay but I did get a little bit sleepy. They also gave me the option of laying down if I felt dizzy....................So, you might ask if you do feel dizzy or asking befor you take the drink. GOOD LUCK YOU ALL OF YOU MOTHERS TO BE!!! :D AND CONGRATS

Q&A: Glucose tolerance test?

I took the Glucose test this morning. seriously I don't know why people think its so bad. I haven't had a soda in weeks. It tasted like sunkist to me. The worst part was being stuck by the needle to take the three tubs of blood. Oh and they sprung on me that since I'm A- blood type I have to get the Rogame shot tomorrow. I'm going on vacation next week. that freaked me out more then the glucose test. haha

Q&A: Glucose tolerance test?

The one hour test is not bad at all. I took that one and failed, so yesterday, I took the 3 hour test. The orange drink is way better than the lemon-lime, and you definitely need to drink them ice cold to have them taste halfway decent. Your arm definitely starts to feel a little tender by the last draw. And they couldn't find a good vein in my left arm, so they had to draw all of the 5 vials from my right arm. I would highly recommend having some one drive you, too. I came very close to passing out by the time it was all said and done.

I had to do it TWICE because my brother is diabetic. I would compare the drink to a very sweet orange soda. It actually made me quite sick. They wouldn't let me leave the lab after they took my blood. I had to lay down!

Q&A: Glucose tolerance test?

I have to go back to the three hour test, but when I asked what the scale was, and how far off I was, it was only 6 points according to the standards at my Dr. office. After doing a little research I found out that other offices use a different standard, and I wouldn't be going back for the three hour test if I was in a different group. Anyone know the levels that are deemed "safe" for glucose?

Q&A: Glucose tolerance test?

It's given to test for gestational diabetes. My OB didn't warn me to be careful what I ate & drank the day before, or even to eat as usual. I happened to have the fist doughnuts I'd had in 5 or 6 years, a huge pasta meal and can of soda the day before. None of these are typical for me... I failed miserably. The lab tech at my 3 hour said that was probably why I failed and I passed my 3 hour with flying colors.

bblove2010 | August 25 , 2010 10:45 AM

Q&A: Glucose tolerance test?

I failed the first test. The nurse doing the second test asked me if I had eaten before the first test (it was allowed). I had had a Kashi granola bar because I was worried the sugary drink would upset an empty stomach. She said that she wished they would tell people not to eat right before because it made them much more likely to fail the first test. So, even if you are allowed, if you can at all avoid it, DON'T EAT beforehand! The three hour test is not fun!

also u should take this test my sister has 3 children and didnt have it so she figured with her 3rd she wouldnt worry about the test and didnt do it she regretted it one of the side effects of gestasional diabeties is having overly large babies meaning she gave birth thinking she was having a 7 pound baby to trying to push out a 12 pounder naturally... so i wouldnt take my chances if i were any of you the drink is not that bad its just like pop u drink it fast u go walk for an hour and they take ur blood to see how it is reacting to the sugars in your blood gestational diabeties can also raise ur blood pressure during active labour!! hope this helps

Any of you ladies that say these Glucose drinks dont taste bad need to reconsider their diets. I am 25 weeks pregnant with my third child and I had an abnormal reading on my last test, so I had to do the 3 hour test for the first time. I wanted to vomit during both. Its like drinking flavored pancake syrup. Might I add that Im a 25 year old vegetarian of 13 years now.....not sure why I even had abnormal readings, but I did. I normaly weigh 135lbs (Im 5ft in tall and a formaer college athlete) I now weigh 140. Dont freak if yours comes back abnormal too. It could easily be a fluke like mine. Q&A: Glucose tolerance test?

I did my 1hr test yesterday. At my practice, we got a Rx for the blood lab at the hospital. I was given a 10oz bottle of a clear liquid that was lemon/lime flavored. It smelled exactly like flat Sprite actually. It was not carbonated at all and was very sweet. I didn't like the taste and it was hard for me to "chug" in 5 minutes. I ended up taking a little longer only because I can't drink anything fast lol. Also, I had to pee way before I started drinking it, which made it uncomfortable and tough to keep drinking! So maybe go potty first ;) But seriously, it isn't that bad. I'm a big wimp about things because I have rarely been sick my whole life. So if I can survive it, it must not be that bad! Liquid antibiotics taste worse!

Q&A: Glucose tolerance test?

At 24 weeks I took my glucose test and almost threw up. My test results were 160 so I had to go back in a few days later and take it again. I fasted the night before, threw up on my last sip, and could not complete the 3 hour test. I had to fast that night and show back up the next day where I kept it down for 20 minutes before throwing up again. My doctor gave me Zofran and I have to try it again Monday, but after all that I'm scared I'll do it again. Just like some of the other comments, I had a very bad headache, was drained, and didn't feel well until later that night. I was told that if it didn't work next time I would have to test myself for a week after breakfast, lunch, dinner. My test is Monday and I leave for my "babymoon" on Friday. Praying Zofran works this time!

Q&A: Glucose tolerance test?

I already went for the 1hr glucose tolerance test. It was done at a lab. They gave me the 50g of glucose drink it was very sweet. I had 5 minutes to drink that bottle. I was there for an hour then thy drew my blood. I had an appt with my ob which informed me that the results were very high. I was sent back to the lab I was there for 3 Hours. I got to the lab they called me in they drew blood before the drink then again was given 5 minutes to drink the 100g of glucose drink. To me this one was even sweeter that the first one. Then my blood was drawn an hour after that and then after two more times one hour apart. So I was there for 3 hrs total and 4 draws of blood. Now I waiting to go back to my ob to get the results.

Q&A: Glucose tolerance test?

I am a phlebotomist and give the glucose screen tests and the glucose tolerence tests on a daily basis and I am also a mom to be in November.... let me help with this one..... a glucose screen you can eat normally before you go to take the test. We will give you a 50 g drink (glucola) and you will have 5 minutes to drink it. During the next hour you need to maintain limited activity and not consume anything except water. The water is to help the phlebotomist find your veins easier and may also help settle your stomach if the glucola makes your stomach ill. This also means you cant have any gum or breathmints and absolutely no smoking if you smoke. After the hour is up your blood will be drawn and put on a machine being tested for gestational diabetes. The tolerance test is a little different. You have to be on a diet before the test and then you have to fast before the test. First you will have to provide a urine specimen and we will use little urine strips and test for sugar in your urine. If none is present we will proceed by drawing a fasting specimen of blood followed by a 75g glucola and for the next 2 hours the same rules apply as with the screen. The difference is that you will also have your blood tested at one and two hours and tested. ..... hope that helps everyone if you have any more questions i would love to try and answer them!!

they have you drink an orange drink which tastes like an extra sugary orange pop. You have to finish it in 5 minutes. You then wait an hour from the time you finish and you get you blood work drawn to see your glucose levels. I believe they should be between 120-140.

I had to take a day off work to do the multiple hours of testing the second time and I passed no problem because I fasted as instructed. I don't know why they have you fast for the second test and not the first, but save some time and energy and do not eat anything the morning before your screening, regardless of whether they say it's ok!

Q&A: Glucose tolerance test?

I just had mine the other day and was told to fast, so I had nothing past midnight and went around 830-900. They give you something similar to a tick, uncarbonated, orange soda. Wasnt as bad as I had heard it would be. Then you wait an hour, and they test your blood. I havent heard anything back so I assume all went well!

Q&A: Glucose tolerance test?

I unfortunately had to go through both glucose tests. Apparently I "failed" the first one (blood sugar came back too high), so I was sent for the three-hour, which SUCKED. The drink is 100g of glucose instead of 50g like for the first one (first one wasn't bad; tasted like flat orange soda). The 100g solution tasted like drinking warm, ultra sweet, Robutussin, bleh! I felt nauseas and jittery. Thankfully, my results came back fine. No gestational, but what a lot to go through!

Q&A: Glucose tolerance test?

I had my glucose screening today, was expecting it to be a piece of cake. Long story short, 20mins after drinking the solution I passed out and came to with people surrounding me and my husband on the phone with 911. They sent me to the ER. It was a very long day and now I'm dreading taking the test again. Also, does this mean I failed the test?

Q&A: Glucose tolerance test?

I just had the 3-hour one today. I was somewhere between diabetic and not diabetic on the 1-hour, so they had me do the three hour today. I don't ussually eat a ton of processed sugar, so the orange drink gave me kind of a headache and I had a hard time getting all of it down. They did all 4 draws from one vein, so that's a bit sore, I got sent to a lab for this, so I killed about three hours in their waiting room. I can't say that you feel "good" during it, but it could have been worse.

Q&A: Glucose tolerance test?

This test is very important to you and the baby. We have no family history of diabetes, but my mother's third baby weighed nearly 13 pounds at birth. Her following two pregnancies were tested for Gestational Diabetes (GD) with the Glucose Tolerance Test. With her 4th baby she monitored her GD with diet, but she had to inject insulin with her 5th baby because her fasting and after meal glucose levels would not return to the normal range. As soon as she had each baby her blood sugar was tested right there in the delivery room and each time showed a normal result...it was gone so quick. Neither of my brothers have diabetes, either. Her last baby was 11 pounds so she opted not to have any more. I was her first and smallest at 8 lbs. 12 oz., bless her. :) So don't miss this one :)

Q&A: Glucose tolerance test?

I don't know what I will do when I will be pregnant because I love candies and I can't live without them.I just found a online candy store and I saw so many tempting candies and I don't know which ones I should choose.

Q&A: Glucose tolerance test?

Judging by the other posts, my test was relatively easy. Because diabetes runs in my family, I had to take it in my 12th week. I had to fast overnight, my appointment was early in the morning. The doc kept the bottles in the fridge and let me choose the flavor- orange is like orange soda without the bubbles. After an hour (and 3 bathroom breaks) my blood was taken. I didn't feel nauseous, only lightheaded because of all the sugar and no real food. Lucky, I guess.
