We’ve heard this one too. And while nothing’s been proven on the subject yet, there are definitely lots of theories floating around out there as to why. Here are two of the biggest:

Theory 1: Mosquitoes are attracted to carbon dioxide. Later on in pregnancy, you’ll tend to breathe more heavily, releasing more air (21 percent to be exact) than non-pregnant women do. Some think the mosquitoes are drawn to the fact that you’re giving off more CO2.

Theory 2: When you’re pregnant, your body temperature rises. This increase in body heat means that your skin releases more volatile substances, which make it easier for mosquitoes to find you.

The larger amounts of carbon dioxide, mixed with the rise in body temperature, make pregnant women a feast for mosquitoes. Be sure to take precautions when you’re outside -- mosquitoes can carry diseases that could be harmful to you and baby.

Q&A: Do mosquitoes bite pregnant women more?

During my first trimester, this felt true. On Independence Day, it was so bad, while everyone else was walking around swatting the occasional mosquito, I was bundled up in a comforter with spray on, a wristband attached to my chair, and constantly swatting. Any flesh left untouched for more than 30 seconds was open season. It was horrible. The rest of the summer was not great either. I ended up getting a OFF fan and carrying it with me everywhere.

Q&A: Do mosquitoes bite pregnant women more?

I live in Puerto Rico and the tropical weather gives us mosquitoes all the time. I am a human feeding ground for them! They loved me before I was pregnant....but now even more so! Anyone have any good natural remedies to keep them away since using repellent is out of the question???

I can believe this is true also. I don't know how natural this method is, but I bought these mosquito repellant wristbands from QVC during my first pregnancy, & although I had to wear one on each arm, they worked very well! I didn't have as many bites once I started using them, only a few (less than 3 after an all day outing, and none on just everyday trips outside) so I would recommend them.

I haven't been bitten once this summer! I usually get one or two that tastes me, but for whatever reason they stay completely clear now that I am pregnant. Thank goodness!
