Why all the interest in bumps and bellies these days? What's the best way to track your tummy as it grows?

Re: Why all the interest in bumps and bellies these days? What's the best way to track your tummy as it grows?

The Bump Expert

This question actually comes from us, to you. We've seen tons of talk about Bump Watching on the boards lately, and we want to know more! Here's what you had to say...

"I try to take weekly pictures of my belly so that I can compare the changes later. For me, it's because I've always tried to have a flatter stomach (although I never really succeeded!) and now I finally have the freedom to flaunt my bump! And I think it's just human interested to see how other women look pregnant." -stef_g

"I'm excited to look pregnant and not just bloated and gross. It's just exciting because for so long, almost the whole first trimester, I haven't really felt pregnant and it would be nice to see some of it actually show." -Tnkrbl21

"I track my growth by using a tape measure around my waist. For keepsakes and scrapbooking I love the idea of taking weekly pictures and making a flip book out of it. Bumps and bellies are interesting because it's the only time in your life that a lumpy belly is a good thing. Plus the baby bumps are so cute and can bring a smile to most anyone's face. Also, I used to think my belly wasn't growing very much. But the tape measure said I had increased 11 inches! My husband suggested it was because my boobs had gotten so big (38HH) and he was right! When I lifted my boobs out of the picture, you could really tell how much bigger my belly was." -Isalisa

"I just stand against the same wall every week or two and have my hubby take pictures. I try to crop them so they're all a similar size/zoom level. Sometimes I've gone a month, but now I'll start taking them every week for sure. I'm a digital photo junky -- you could make a video and show the evolution. At first (with your first pregnancy) you always think you're so huge, so documenting the hugeness is part of it. It's mostly just cool to see the evolution. And cool, but a bit sad, to see what I used to look like!" -littlecindy

"I'll be happy when I don't just look bloated, but more like an expectant mother. We've both been keeping track of my belly by taking a pic every week and putting it into a book we found called 'The Belly Book.' I love it! It's like a baby book for your pregnancy!" -Dayzy

"I'll be happy when it's a full bump and not just looking like a chubby belly. So I get excited when it's getting rounder and looking more like a baby bump." -Dana-n-Dan

re: Q: Bump Watching?

I watch and look for myself. Every time it looks bigger, I think to myself I'm that much closer to holding the baby. When I'm feeling fat or unattractive looking at other people's pics is helpful. You realize you're not alone. Everyone is getting bigger at different paces, your growth no matter what speed is normal. In addition, sometimes it is much easier to see how cute and fun these changes are when you see other people anxiously tracking the same growth. I take pictures for family and friends that aren't near by and have a monthly up date talking about what Dh and I are doing, how the nursery is coming along and include profile and frontal shots. I'm the first of my close friends to have a baby and this is the first baby on grandchild on both sides and they all want to know more and share in the fun. They send books, flowers, cloths, gift certs, heirlooms. In addition to an old school handwritten thank you note, this allows for a more tangible way of thanking them and giving them the opportunity to connect with the baby.

re: Q: Best Bump Watching Method?

I don't understand the bump craze. People keep asking me when I'm gonna post pictures of my bump. I think all the women I've seen look beautifull. But I also think it's b/c they're happy to show it off. As a compliment someone actually said "You don't look pregnant, just chunky!" My belly is all most round enough now. Once it gets there, then I'll be taking photos and enjoying it. Until then, I'm just enjoying getting to eat food w/o all the calorie counting worries!

re: Q: Best Bump Watching Method?

I'm not interested. Silly Dad wants to document it. I'd rather eat and not pose all the time.

re: Q: Best bump watching method?

I'm so glad to see that I am not going crazy. I have been feeling fat and bloated even though the morning sickness has me eating less. I see I am not alone. Thank you!

re: Q: Best bump watching method?

I've been watching my belly grow. I have gotten my husband to take a couple pictures so far and I use a tape measure to measure it every now and then. What I don't like is that everyone around me seems to be staring at my belly and insist on commenting on it every day. I don't need to be reminded that I am getting bigger. And please don't tell me I am starting to get fat or pudgy. There's a baby growing in there!

re: Q: Best bump watching method?

We love my belly...I watch it all the time and Victor checks on it very often too. It started to show as a wierd bump low down on the left but rapidly grew a nice pregnant belly. We are only 18 weeks and people alredy offer me seats on the train. :) I carry very proudly that growing bump.

Q&A: Best bump watching method?

I've also been taking picutres week by week and some i just add the ultrasounds to show the baby's growth also. I think women like to know what the stomach's look like to make sure that they are where they are supposed to be and give another feeling of "yes i am pregnant".

Q&A: Best bump watching method?

Dh and I both love my belly, so we really want to document what's going on. We taped a posted board to the wall, and every two weeks (for now, we'll switch to once a week once the time gets closer) we draw a line over my boobs and belly and we write a bunch of things on it: my current bra size (since it changes to much now) my waist in inches, how far along I am, what I've been craving, what new experiences have happened since the last time, and how much we both weigh (I cook a lot more now so we track Daddy's weight too!)! And I take pictures of my belly usually at odd times, and I send them to the families and put them online. This is our first and we're both so excited, we can't help but record everything!

TCTF |

Q&A: Best bump watching method?

I'm doing something just like that I taped a piece of heavy paper to the wall and once a week I stand there and have the man trace me, Then I pain in the gap in different shades to match our future nursery. When we are all done I hope to hang it as wall art :)

Q&A: Best bump watching method?

I can't wait until I actually look pregnant! I was asked if I was feeling pregnant and I said 'No... I just feel FAT' because i'm grown out of most my jeans but my baby bump is not showing and I feel like I just look fat and not pregnant... i'm hoping next month to be popping out there :)

I'm almost fourteen weeks along, and there's no bump yet. I just feel (and look) a little fatter. I'm really hating this stage of pregnancy...

Q&A: Best bump watching method?

I am 12 weeks, and I hardly have a bump! I don't look fat, and my clothes still fit so I can't complain. But this is our first baby, and I'm really excited about being pregnant and showing off my baby bump :)

Q&A: Best bump watching method?

We've been taking pictures on a weekly basis (or almost weekly), and I love to see it grow. I was measuring it, but I haven't really done that lately. I'm probably going to make a scrapbook of the pics eventually.

Q&A: Best bump watching method?

I have posted weekly pics of the bump on my facebook page in an album devoted to pregnancy photos, inlcuding ultrasound pics. At first (12 weeks) there was not much to see, but it has been great to watch it grow and to share it with friends and family near and far. I have been showing pretty well for several weeks now, but this week's pic showed I have really popped! Have the 2nd ultrasound this week to find out what it is!!

I'm finally getting my bump that looks like a baby and not too much lunch! We have been doing the weekly pictures but mostly because the FIL wants them..... it is fun to see how we change so quickly though! Can't wait to meet my little girl!! :) :) :)

Q&A: Best bump watching method?

It feels good to know I am not just fat and that there is a moving baby in there! I try to keep up with weekly pictures. For my first son I bought The Belly Book created by Amy Krouse Rosenthal. Probably the best book I bought durning my pregnancy. There are spots for pictures every week, baby shower information, appointment information, measurement stuff, even foot prints and pictures for right after delivery but at the same time fun for kids to go back and look at. My son is almost 2 and already enjoys looking at it. I went and got another for this pregnancy. They also have the big sibling book which gives older siblings a way to be involved in the current pregnancy and give their feelings on certain things. So for all of you ladies doing week by week tracking I totally recommend these books for you :) you can pick them up at any book store. I have also found that having it for my first and doing it for my second that it is fun to go back to my first book with my first son and compare with the current book I am doing for my second son!! :)

Q&A: Best bump watching method?

We have been taking pics every few weeks, and saving them to the computer, along with the ultrasounds so we can put it all together at the end for our daughters baby book..its amazing how quickly you grow and change...I cant wait for her to get here in August!

Q&A: Best bump watching method?

I started taking pictures at 12 weeks and it was amazing to see how different I look week to week, this is our first and we are so excited, I feel like this gives me something else to focus on besides how much longer I have to wait, as the month changes I make a slide show for that month with pics I took that month, plus I have a pregnancy vlog on Youtube, my mom lives far away and it's my favorite way to keep her involved

Q&A: Best bump watching method?

I've decided to get some poster board and trace the outline of my belly every 3 weeks, just like you would measure your child's height every year!

Q&A: Best bump watching method?

I love my belly at 24 weeks!!! It is best described as a basketball - so cute and perfectly round. Feels like I havn't gained almost any weight anywhere else. The only thing is it feels so big now and gets in the way enough already that I don't think I'm going to be happy with the size much longer - I don't want to get any bigger! My maternity photo session is in a month and I just take bump photos here and there otherwise. My cousin took weekly photos in the same spot in her living room against a white wall and turned it into a video tracking the growth, ending on a photo of her in the same place but holding the baby in front of her belly. It turned out amazing!!!!

Q&A: Best bump watching method?

I've been measuring my belly and writing it down in the Daily PG Journal that I bought from B&N. It will be fun to look back on it in the years to come.

Q&A: Best bump watching method?

My husband made a chart for me to stand in front of for weekly pictures. It is made up of inch-wide black and white stripes labeled with inch measurements, (think, mug shot background turned sideways.) Just make sure you mark a spot on the floor for both of you or the pictures won't match up, my sister in law is making a flip book for us!

Q&A: Best bump watching method?

I've been taking pictures of my growing bump each week since week 6. Also keeping a journal of notes (what I'm craving, milestones like ultrasounds, how I'm feeling, etc.) Making a pregnancy scrapbook so I can always remember this exciting adventure. I've always been petite with a flat belly, so at 12 weeks my belly has gone from tiny bump to full on Buddha belly! I love it!

Q&A: Best bump watching method?

Hello everyone - my wife and I experienced all the same questions and thoughts. I was so excited to see her belly grow. I wanted to take a picture everyday and then do an animation like series - sort of a flip book like when I was a kid. Then we tried tracing the silhouette like when you record a kid's height vertically - only this was horizontal. Our initial silhoettes really looked like great doodles but then we started playing with different mediums and papers and inks and then things really started getting fun. And beautiful. Anyways, we were so happy with the artwork that we made based on our own pregnancy that we put all of the art supplies we had used into a kit and started selling them as Art Bellies Pregnancy Art Kits. I'm biased - but I love them. Please take a look if you are curious. Just google Art Bellies. Thank you!

Q&A: Best bump watching method?

I also take pictures pretty much every week, to see the progress. As well as that I document the fundal height my doctor gives me, and I also have a belly scetch on the wall. Every month or so I stand up against the wall and get someone to trace a line of my bump, and then i write how many weeks I am at the time. I am trying to document this pregnancy as much as possible. I only did the picture thing with my first son, and then my laptop got ruined and they are all gone now and it makes me so sad.

Q&A: Best bump watching method?

I am all broken out! Thanks hormones. May I suggest taking a photo each week in a black t shirt in front of closed white blinds. Shows off the body without any color or definition and you don't even have to smile. :)

Q&A: Best bump watching method?

I've been tracking my belly with pictures everyweek. I love seeing the progress of the belly growth. This is such an amazing blessing to be pregnant...it might be my body, but God has decided to give me a gift of a little baby inside this body and that is incredible! I am almost 24 weeks pregnant and I am loving every minute of it!

Q&A: Best bump watching method?

It's funny cause I still feel fat and am now 6 months. I love children and am always babysitting everyone elses. I was always ready, but could never see myself going thru the actually pregnancy. With advice from all my mommy friends, I chose to dl an app (what to expect on the iPhone) on my phone and do the weekly log of my baby bump. I use the same angle, same side and always in the mornings every week. It was never my thing, but I thought it'd be interesting and now that my baby is active, I'm glad I did it. I see the progress every week. My bump is really starting to show. I love it. Regardless if you care, it's a great way to see the progress and always something to look back on. Especially with your first child.

Q&A: Best bump watching method?

After losing almost 40 pound in the first two months, I am glad that I am finally beginning to look pregnant rather than just flabby. I will have to say that I am still able to fit into all of my pre-pregnancy clothes comfortably, due to the weight loss, but not for much longer. I have not been one to document the measurements or take pics. My 20 year old daughter has asked for pics of the "baby bump". So, I am planning a professional photo session at about 29-31 weeks, in a white gown, to share the "glow" of pregnancy and so my daughter will have the pic she wants.

Q&A: Best bump watching method?

I have a 12 year old son and of course that was before digital cameras and I was very young so I did not keep track of anything...now I wish I had. With this baby I just started my third trimester and I have taken a weekly picture every week since the beginning, I also measure my belly and my chest along with taking my weight. I figure I regretted not doing anything the first time I was not going to let any of it get by me this time. I gained 40 lbs with my first son and now at 28 weeks have only gained 14 lbs, I wish I was able to compare the milestones from one pregnancy to the other. I just keep think if I gain 25 lbs in the last 12 weeks I am really going to be hurting...literally!

Q&A: Best bump watching method?

This is my first pregnancy, and I actually have been documenting myself regularly. I am so intrigued by my changing body. I have always been a really tiny person, so seeing my body go through this change is amazing. I have a spreadsheet document that I write in about once a month measuring my waist in inches and my weight. And, I try to photograph about every two weeks, but this past week I grew A LOT almost over night so I took pictures like 5 days apart and you can see a very drastic change.

Q&A: Best bump watching method?

I try not to think about my bump, but everyone tells me I am way to small for 25 weeks. They cannot believe that I have only 105 days to go. It makes it hard for me to enjoy being pregnant with my first child. In fact, it makes me feel like am doing something wrong? I hope I am not. I don't really know what your supposed to look like at this point, but when i've been fat in the past I looked about the same. The only thing giving me away is the long pink line down my middle. Hope I am not alone.

35baby |

Q&A: Best bump watching method?

I started taking pictures once per week at about week 14. I didn't show any kind of bump at all till then, and even at that point it was very small. I started it so I could put them in an album (kind of like a flipbook) for my daughter when she's born. A lot of girlfriends of mine say their daughters love looking at their books of pics from when they were pregnant.

Q&A: Best bump watching method?

My hubby and I didn't get to go on our honeymoon until I was 5.5 months, and the whole time we were on the beach in Cancun, everyone thought I was going to explode! Apparently Mexican women have smaller bumps than American women, but that really shocked me.

alianne87 |

Q&A: Best bump watching method?

I started taking weekly pictures at about 13 weeks. I do the weekly pics for a few reasons: 1) I post them online for friends and family that live out of state. 2) this is my first pregnancy and I'm super excited! 3) I've always been really tiny (98lbs before the pregnancy) so its just fun to see my body change. its really funny when people that don't know me find out I'm expecting twin and comment on how small I am, I always say "actually I was A LOT smaller than this a few months ago..." but I don't think they believe me.

Q&A: Best bump watching method?

I feel like an awful mom to be because I am not taking pictures of the spreading progress. Honestly, its depressing! I'm 5'7 weigh 120 with a BMI of 10- I've always been a fit person and to see my body morph in to something I do not recognize is utterly depressing! I wish I could be one of these happy ladies who just love having a bump but I am totally dreading it!Im 13 weeks and not showing as of yet but counting down the days already to December! Just being honest!

I bought a big cardboard, stood sideways against it and traced my back and belly. Every 4 weeks my hubby helps me to stand in line with my back's trace and trace my belly again. On every traced line I write the weeks of how far pregnant I am and my belly measurement.... After my pregnancy I'll take a photo of the cardboard and scrapbook it....

I feel the same way as most of these ladies, I can't wait to look pregnant and not just bloated n chubby. I had a bit of a tummy before pregnancy because I put on 13 pounds. So now it's kind of just blending into what I had their already. So it's really hard to tell I'm pregnant. I'm 13 weeks. So I'm hoping by 16 weeks I'll look a bit pregnant rarer then the chubby belly look. I want it to look more hard.

Q&A: Best bump watching method?

i can relate. im almost 13 weeks and just feel like the bit of belly fat i had before is just being pushed out by my growing uterus. i am starting to get a "bump" but it doesnt really look like a hard baby bump. started taking belly photos last week, i was fine with that but my husband insisted on taking some with my belly uncovered -eech. not ready to show that off yet, not till its clearly a firm baby belly!

I have to say that I like the idea, but I would inevitably miss months and I would not find an album for the pictures until months later. Also, I am not thrilled with pictures taken of me, so an album is not an incentive.=)
