Q&A: Abdominal pain during pregnancy?

I’m having a lot of cramping. Is something wrong with my baby?

Re: I’m having a lot of cramping. Is something wrong with my baby?

The Bump Expert

Probably not. Lower abdominal cramping is just one of those things that happen (yep -- another one) when a baby is growing in your belly. Doctors call it round ligament pain. See, your uterus is getting bigger every day (so is baby!), and the muscles and ligaments supporting it are stretching out to accommodate the changes. That stretching can bring a bit of pain, especially when you change positions, cough or are particularly active. These mild aches and jabs are normal and (sorry) may persist as your uterus continues to grow. To get some relief, scale back the physical activity and avoid cramp-inducing positions. Also try a warm bath, or simply stretch out and kick up your heels -- resting comfortably should ease the pain.

You needn’t worry unless the pain is severe, constant or accompanied by bleeding or other unusual signs. If you have any of these symptoms, call your doctor right away.

re: Q: Abdominal pain?

I'm glad I'm not the only one! My doctor advised me to quit exercising altogether which I'm bummed about. My facility is graciously freezing my account until I can get back to my routine. Good thing it's summer now and maybe I can try swimming in our pool. I have severe cramps and Tylenol helps. I often wondered if something was wrong with my baby until my doctor said "the good thing is, there's nothing down there anymore. Your ovaries, kidneys, everything has moved up so there's nothing there but round ligaments." Good luck and stay strong!

re: Q: Abdominal pain?

Since this is my first baby I panicked when I started feeling this cramping. I have endometrosis and thought I was having a complication. I am happy to know its normal. Well, kinda happy cause it hurts hehehe

Q&A: Abdominal pain during pregnancy?

I was having them too! I thought i was having contractions or something lol. Due to my high risk preg, I talked to my prenatologyst, he did a cervix exam and it came out perfectly fine, so he said the same thing, baby is growing so we are hurting! No quick or sudden movements support your body when your getting out of bed. Put Ice on it its a perfect home anasthesia. Everything should be fine.

I get these weird cramps and I realized I had to potty #2 everytime I got them and they feel a lot like cramps. Just think of them as a timer going off saying its time for you sit down, prop your feet up and relax.

Q&A: Abdominal pain during pregnancy?

I just had bad abdominal pains last night and this morning ... until I took a big poopie. lol Apparently, I was very constipated, and it was all just moving through my system. The pains went away after I polluted the environment.

Q&A: Abdominal pain during pregnancy?

I, unfortunately am a victim of the poopie pains and growing pains mixed in one. I've never been this gassed up in my life!! It scared me in the beginning. I was ready to rush off to the ER. Since doctors told me I wouldn't be able to have any more children, this little miracle had me nervous for the entire 1st trimester!! I am only 13 weeks, and already have the belly button soreness, and mild cramping from time to time. I've noticed that when I do a bit too much walking it worsens. I guess this is his/her way of telling me to slow down and relax!! So, I have no choice but to follow directions!!

Q&A: Abdominal pain during pregnancy?

I've been having alot of the 'growing' pains associated with pregnancy. It really worried me at first. It was similar to menstral cramps but 3 times more intense! It was hard to figure out at first if it was b/c of constipation or something else. This weekend for instance..... Was feeling great and then out of the blue I'm about doubled over in pain. The only thing I keep thinking of is that my husband is 6'3" and therefore I'm brewing this huge, buckett-head child inside me!! I'm really not poping out much so that's why it was soo surprising for me to hear that the pain was caused by baby's growth. I take tylenol when the pain gets too intense.... Are there any other go to tricks?

Q&A: Abdominal pain during pregnancy?

I am just 15 weeks today, so I was worried that this pain is something serious. It is just a dull ache that lasts for a couple of hours. It goes away after I lie down. I guess this is the same thing?

kmaher1 |

Q&A: Abdominal pain during pregnancy?

I'm so glad that I'm not alone here! I have the same pain and like "alittlealisa" my fiancee is 6'3" and I'm thinking big baby on the way! But I also get the same striking pains whenever I need to go to restroom. I also notice them when I'm moving around a lot and that must mean to sit my butt down and prop those feet up. I'm definitely going to try the heating pad made with a sock and rice...that's probably safer than an electric one. :)

Q&A: Abdominal pain during pregnancy?

SO glad I stumbled upon this thread. I was thinking either something was wrong with the baby or I am a huge wuss! My DH is 6'5" and I am terrified the baby is going to be bigger than I am. I have also found that the cramps intensify when I have to go #2. Hoping the dr will ok me to use something like Colace because I think that would help with the intensity of the cramps.

onengardner |

Q&A: Abdominal pain during pregnancy?

Definitly try the the colace. It took almost a week for it to kick in for me, but really helps. I have never been so constipated in my life! My doctor recommended Colace. Hope this helps.

Mrspaqueen |

Q&A: Abdominal pain during pregnancy?

My doctor told me to take Colace with every meal. My digestive tract has slowed so much that I won't go for two weeks sometimes. Then I'll have severe adbominal pains and finally have an extremely painful episode and then go. The colace, fiber pills, and lots of water help, but unfortunately nothing really cures it until the baby comes. Also, my ligament pain has been increasingly noticeable in my second pregnancy. Feels like my muscles do after a hard workout without properly stretching.

Q&A: Abdominal pain during pregnancy?

This may sound way off but hear me out... when you clean your bellybutton sometimes you get really bad cramps right there and those are the types of pains i've had mostly while lying down. they get so bad it hurts to change positions! i guess these are growing pains but I neaver thought of having to go poo! I'll have to keep an eye on that! I'm just glad they don't last too long and rarely in public... so far!

Q&A: Abdominal pain during pregnancy?

For all of you who are constipated or having poop issues, I seriously recommend drinking water nonstop, several glasses a day and at night keep it by your bed and drink some every time u wake up! Yes u will be peeing like crazy but for me it has made my poop issues disappear completely. I may go a couple days without going but I never have a problem when I have to go. I have an easier time now than before I was preggo...the wonders of water!

Q&A: Abdominal pain during pregnancy?

It could be dehydration causing you to have contractions It happened to me last Saturday and I started spotting. They gave me iv fluids and pain meds and checked the baby and my cervix. call your doctor

Q&A: Abdominal pain during pregnancy?

Tylenol, plus alternating with ice packs and then hot pad/heating pad seems to help. Also relaxing in a hot bath! Moreover, resting is the biggest thing: put your feet up and stop moving/walking around. I am a very fit and active person, and the RLP acts up after walking around too much or too much rolling around in my sleep. I had to go the OB triage to make sure everything was okay, since I had sudden, sharp stabbing RLP on my right side - the sharp pains subsided after 30 minutes, but the RLP chronic, achey pain continued on. Everything is okay with baby, but doctor said to rest!

Q&A: Abdominal pain during pregnancy?

So glad to read this! My pains are more of a quick, sharp stabbing...but I'm hoping they are due to the round ligament pain. I'm 7 weeks and this is my first baby, so it was really worrying me. No other symptoms or problems though, so I feel much better after reading this thread.

Q&A: Abdominal pain during pregnancy?

I am now 19 weeks and some days along.... I've been having these pains just the same... the alternating hot and cold is a good thing but it's VERY important to be careful with the heating pads as to not let your stomach get too hot. Try a towel or blanket between you and the pad. Also, water helps A LOT. You may also try lotion, I use shea butter with cocoa, it allows moisture to get into your skin which helps it stretch without ripping. As for the pains with the going #2 I get that as well and I take stool softeners, they work wonders. As for Critterdr5 and the ribcage thing, you really need to be careful because problems with your gull bladder are very common during pregnancy, if you notice it is worse with grease or citrus then ask your doc to check it for you.

Q&A: Abdominal pain during pregnancy?

I recently had severe pain that woke me in the middle of the night. The first question the doctor asked was whether there was spotting or bleeding. There wasn't, so when I went to the office to see him, I was tested for a bladder infection and kidney stones. My doctor shared that 9 out of 10 times, the pain is not actually associated with the baby or reproductive organs. It's usually something else (ligaments, gas/constipation, dehydration, spasms or possibly an infection). I hope this helps.

alisondelmonte |

Q&A: Abdominal pain during pregnancy?

My doctor also said that cramps are a sure sign that you are dehydrated (especially in the hot summer months). I cannot stress this enough: water, water water! Drink it until you feel like you will float away...and then drink some more. I have to pee constantly, but my cramps have almost completely stopped.

AustinKPiglet |

Q&A: Abdominal pain during pregnancy?

I agree with the post below. If you're having issues with constipation try drinking a lot of water every day lots of fruit helps too. I drink about 60-80 oz each day and don't go more than a day without a bowel movement.

CorinneEC |

Q&A: Abdominal pain during pregnancy?

Dehydration does play a big part in the cramping. I was worried because I was constantly cramping or aching but I was also doing to much. Just got off bed rest for 3 weeks and hoping she doesn't put me back on it next week when i return due to my BP. Its stable but my feet are swelling really bad...more water!!!

Q&A: Abdominal pain during pregnancy?

I am at 18 weeks, and I not only get the sharp stabbing pains, but the dull ache in the lowest part of my abdomen as well. Funnily enough, the dull ache intensifies after I pee, if I let my bladder get too full. But only about half the time. Weird.

Q&A: Abdominal pain during pregnancy?

I am having a good bit of cramping as well attributed to the baby growing and taking my uterus with him but I also wanted to warn those who have had previous c-sections or any abdominal surgery because you may also have adhesion(scar tissue). These adhesion can cause organs to become attached to other random organs causing pain and as the baby grows they can also rip causing a very special type of pain. Applying a low amount of heat helps somewhat but the good news is I have asked for another c-section so they can remove the adhesion there now which should give me a few years of relief since unfortunately, they do tend to come back. Keep up with the UTI's, they are never good but are more worrisome during pregnancy. Good luck to everyone and just remember this is SO worth it!

Q&A: Abdominal pain during pregnancy?

This is my 2nd pregnancy, but this is the first time I actually know that I am pregnant (I did not know that I was pregnant until 6 hours before my now 5 year old son was born via emergency c-section). So thank you for this, my abdomen was beginning to have pain, but I touch down there and it's getting harder down there, so this can explain it. Thank you so much and good luck all

Q&A: Abdominal pain during pregnancy?

I also have some pain, a cramping feeling. I usually stop whatever it is that I'm doing, and drink at least 2 glasses of water, lay on my left side, or at least put my feet up. The pain stops 99% of the time, so I think I may be dehydrated when that happens.

DeeDaa313 |

Q&A: Abdominal pain during pregnancy?

It could also be dehydration too. I was getting very mild, period like pain lower down at about 19 weeks and was worried I had done some damage carrying heavy groceries. When I spoke to my OBGYN she said it sounded like dehydration. I tend to drink a lot of water every day anyway, approx the recommended 8 glasses a day, but she said I had to drink a lot more like 3/4 gallion or 12 glasses a day! I'm now doing this and the pain has disappeared.

Q&A: Abdominal pain during pregnancy?

I'm prego with my first two (TWINS!) so anytime something happens i freak out a little because I'm considered high risk. I've been getting cramping sense about 8 weeks (I'm 18 now). My doctor said it was normal though, which kinda bummed me out....I thought I wouldn't have to deal with cramping for a while lol. But no I get cramps, "growing pains", pains from constipation, and the worst gas pains of my life! One night it was so bad I was in tears and my husband was ready to take me to the ER. I've found I just have to watch what I eat (which I've never had to do before), drink lots of water (which I hate!), and stay off my feet (again something I'm not used to doing). But it'll all be worth it when I see their little faces =)

Q&A: Abdominal pain during pregnancy?

I'm 19 weeks and I suddenly got this pain on the top of my stomach below my breasts and it ran down to my belly, it was like a straight line. At first I thought it was gas but it was a different kind of pain - it was a dull ache that didn't go away. I rested for a day and half, and it got better. But I couldn't walk right or sit without it hurting more. I'm wondering if I just strained or pulled a muscle there. I have all the other "growing" and back pains and cramps but those are usually on my side or lower than my belly button so I was worried. I went to urgent care, they found little one's heartbeat so I didn't worry too much but it was odd.

Q&A: Abdominal pain during pregnancy?

I had this pain exactly when I hit 13 weeks...I had been having terrible gas bubble pains but knew it was different. Thanks to The Bump I realized that it was completely normal which calmed my anxiety. It is terribly uncomfortable when I get up from sitting at my desk for a while but usually subsides when I get moving. Long car-ride this weekend and I'm hoping it doesn't bring too much discomfort.

Q&A: Abdominal pain during pregnancy?

I started having cramps a few weeks back. I noticed them mostly while I was hosting a baby shower for my bestfriend, and I sat down for a awhile pushing on my stomach where I felt the pain. It slowly got better (NEVER went away COMPLETELY) But got a little more bearable. It persisted into the following week, and one evening I woke up with these JABBING SHARP PAINFUL pains. But it was just in the middle of the night when I awoke. After that night of PAIN. I told myself I was going to watch what I was doing to make the pain come on. And if they didn't go away I would call my doctor. The next day though it was gone. I am 24 weeks today, and I would say my pain lasted through my 21st and 22nd week. I haven't had it since. So for me it was just a little time, so I wish anyway who has this has them; only have them for a short time. I did pin point it to being so active. I had my 2 neice during that time and took them somewhere that caused me do A LOT of walking. Listen to them, and REST as much as you can

Q&A: Abdominal pain during pregnancy?

Hi, I am in my 17th week now and started getting abdominal pain since monday. It started with a whole Abdomen pain - upper and lower and is continous, I am thinking it as a constipation related pain as I am seeing some differences. It is the same on tuesday, my nurse told me to drink more water, take more fibers, eat prunes etc. Today, on wednesday upper abdomen pain is gone, but the lower one shifted to right side completely. Even if I get up from my desk I feel the pain a lot. Did someone experienced similar issues? Thanks!

This is my first pregnancy and I've been having cramps that are like I'm on my period, but it made sense when I was told that it's bc I have a baby growing inside me. The things movies don't show ;)

Q&A: Abdominal pain during pregnancy?

I was cramping towards the end of my first trimester and into my second. When I had my first ultrasound at 12 weeks, they said it was probably from small cysts on my ovaries.

Q&A: Abdominal pain during pregnancy?

I am just about 19 weeks and yesterday was the first time I had experienced this "abdominal pain" or cramping. It started around 3:00 at work and I was keeled over at my desk, could barely make the commute home around 5. Once I got home I drank a lot of water and rested, eventually the pains went away but I was extremely worried. I haven't felt the baby move too much since (he had been moving nonstop prior to yesterday) but I have a feeling that's just me being a worry wart! Any similar situations?
