10 Babymoon Tips

We'll help make sure your prebaby vacay goes off without a hitch.

Let's face it: These next few months are probably your last chance for some real alone time with your mate for quite a while. Many couples indulge by enjoying the last bit of sanity in their own homes, but if you're one of us that plans to get the heck out of town (and maybe get a little pampering while we have the excuse), here are a few tips to keep you safe and happy on your last big child-free getaway (aka "babymoon"):

Tip #1: Agree on the Locale
Make sure the destination appeals to you both so you can relax and enjoy your time together.

Tip #2: Minimize Travel Time
Enduring a layover or a 10 hour car ride is no way to start a relaxing trip. Make sure you choose a location that won’t require too much effort.

Tip #3: Travel Now! (2nd Trimester)
The second trimester should be the most comfortable time to travel. By now, the nausea of the first trimester is hopefully a distant memory and you aren't quite as uncomfortable as you will be in a few weeks.(According to the American College of Obstetrics and Gynecology, the safest time to travel is from 18 to 24 weeks.)

Tip #4: Keep Your OB in the Loop
Traveling presents a new set of hurdles when you’re pregnant. The most important thing is safety,so make sure you speak with your doctor before booking that trip to Madagascar. (Especially if you are carrying multiples or are considered "high risk," don't be too disappointed if your doc wants to keep you close to home.)

Tip #5: Vaccinations
If you plan to travel overseas, check in with your doc about any necessary vaccines.

Tip #6: Check Out Medical Facilities
When researching locations, find out if they have access to quality medical facilities near the area (just in case). Write down the contact info for nearby hospitals to keep on hand as you travel, along with a number for contacting your OB.

Tip #7: Check Restrictions
If you’re flying, check with the airline to be sure they'll let you on the plane! Most physicians say it’s safe to fly up to 36 weeks, but airlines have varying restrictions, including different policies for domestic and international travel. Cruise lines have restrictions too: Royal Caribbean won’t allow you to travel when you enter your 27th week, Celebrity Cruise Lines only allows those less than 26 weeks, and Princess Cruises sets their limit at 24 weeks.

Tip #8: Wear Your Seatbelt Low
If you’re driving, wear the seatbelt with the shoulder portion over the collarbone and the lap portion under the abdomen as low as possible on the hips. You’ll save yourself and your belly from hitting the dashboard in the event of a car accident. The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration also recommends moving your seat as far back as possible (and tilting it back slightly) to maximize the distance between you and the dashboard or steering wheel.

Tip #9: Cruising? Not Without a Doctor!
If you plan on taking to the seas, make sure there is a health care provider on board. Many smaller ships (fewer than 100 passengers) don't have medical personnel on staff.

Tip #10: Keep Your Blood Pumping
No matter how you're traveling, try to get up and move around every hour or two to aid circulation, and try not to cross your legs - you'll lessen the risk of blood clots. Keeping your tootsies elevated will also help out by preventing swelling and leg cramps. (Once you've arrived, we're sure you can handle the whole "blood pumping" thing on your own...)

We planned a trip to the beach, and it was perfect! It was only a 3 hour drive, so we stopped a few times on the way and I was fine! It was totally worth it, too!

by jennymommy2b

We are going to cabo in March for 7 day's and we made sure we had a non stop flight which only puts us in the air for 3 hours. I will be about 27 weeks when we go. We can't wait for one last vacation before we have our little one! Like a second Honeymonn!

by Mrs.West07

We are going to Branson, MO the end of March for our first anniversary. Unfortunately it's a 7 or 8 hour drive, but we'll stop often and I'll put my feet up while my husband drives. :-)

by rachelb823

We are planning a trip to Hilton Head where we first met while working a conference. (We lived in different cities at the time). It will be wild to return to the place where it all began and think about all that's happened in the last 2.5 years! It will be mid May and I'll be 25 weeks.

by ucalum93

My husband and I are staying at an Inn in Coronado, San Diego... The Inn offers a babymoon package- which includes a prenatal massage for mommy, a gift certificate for ice cream, and a lovely jar of Pickels! One more week before we drive there from Orange County.

by westcoastmaynors

i am worried because i booked a cruise in mid september (seven days, all the way to cabo, san lucas) and i will only be around two months. do you think its safe??

by evil_yeti@yahoo.com

I want one too!My husband says if it's safe, he'll take me to Mozambique. I'll be about 27 to 28 weeks then.

by MyMosh

My husband and I are going to Las Vegas for our 3rd anniversary, I will be 18 weeks and 3 days. And I can't wait! 73 more days. :-)

by pete82

We went on the Superferry from Oahu to Maui and then drove the road to Hana. We thought the boat would be more comfy than a cramped plane. So wrong!! I do NOT recommend a 4 hour boat ride followed by a 2 hour windy car ride as a good way to relax!!

by gummybearsong

Note that Royal Carribbean has apparently changed its policy. They will not accept passengers that are pregnant and in or past their 24th week. I just had to cancel our cruise because of this rule. Their policy is listed here: http://tinyurl.com/ajf5pq Thought I'd share...

by CarlaS2198

my husband and i and with three other couples are going to las vegas for the valentines day weekend. I will be about 29 weeks. From Los Angeles to Las Vegas is 4 hours drive.

by cherry anne

it's like a honeymoon while you're pregnant, your last chance to relax with your partner before the baby's arrival. We were planning to get pregnant in May and already booked a few months ago spring break in nuevo vallarta then we found out I'm pregnant. I'll be 9 weeks when we go. Hopefully everything goes well.

by future mrs. jimenez

My husband and I took a walking tour of Washington D.C. (something we had both been wanting to do for years, but work and life kept getting in the way.) We'd had it planned before our little Christmas surprise, and it was an excellent place to spend some time together.I wouldn't recommend it for someone who's past about 25 weeks, though.

by spiffy

I am 8 wks and already showing! My pants don't fit anymore. LOL My husband and I are planning to leave next week for 5 days to Cozumel, Mexico and enjoy the last bit of the summer in a relaxing atmosphere. I can't wait! Baby's first trip to the beach!

by angeldm430

I'm kind of nervous I'm doing a ten hour drive back home to have my daughters grave stone put in we will be going when im 21 weeks which is just 2 weeks short of when i went into pre term labor with her same time last year. I don't know how much of a good idea that will be but I have been planning this since october my family traditionally has the stone put in at the 1 year mark I don't know how the stress will affect me any advice??

by destinleve04

My BF is deployed so for my birthday my son, my bestfriend and I are going to ATL to visit family and then to Bonnet Creek for some r&r. I'm not that far and we know a lot of shortcuts to cut down the drive time - looking forward to fun in the sun.

by chantil_2005

Planning a trip to London and Paris for my 30th birthday in October!!! I will be 11 weeks at that time!

by thetabeauty

We are moving cross country over Christmas break, so that will count as our "Babymoon" LOL We have 3 kids at home, so a vacay is just not all that realistic for us. We will be driving 2300 miles, so with all my "get out and move around" stops I am sure it will take us FOREVER! :)

by missybee77

I'm due in March 6th, 2010 and planned a trip to South Carolina in January. I will be 7 months but the trip will be 1 1/2 hours in a spa resort. Looking forward to it!

by msohman

daddy works too much to really go anywhere this holiday...so i am planning a beach walk since we live two minutes from the gulf and then we are going to Joanie's to Thanksgiving and i am bringing the pumpkin pie. And the beach will be packed ...so i am hoping to get daddy up early so we can find parking and take a romantic walk on the white sands..keepin my fingers crossed that he will be in the mood ...xoxo

by shannykay9

We are going to Las Vegas and stay in a retreat. Travel time is 4 hours and non-stop. I haven't told him about it yet though. I hope he enjoys it. I have put in a lot of work.

by mmccray1

My huni and I are heading to Tahoe at the end of the month (I'll be 18 weeks) and possibly Punta Cana (Dominican Republic) for some sun and fun in late April. Can't wait!!!

by MarjieVonJexxy

DH and I will be going to Disneyland and to visit my SIL when I'll be about 8 weeks along. While I've been lucky to not have morning sickness yet, I'm hoping I'll continue to be that lucky in 3 weeks.

by mrsniebo

we're off to Puerto Vallarta, Mexico!!! My husband has always wanted to go, so I guess now is the time :)

by Nordstrom21

We just booked our babymoon to Aruba in March! I will be 18 weeks.

by GIGIMACCIBRIDE

I have never heard of the term babymoon until today; but we do have one planned in May. I am really looking forward to just "US" time; it seems like everytime we go somewhere it is for someone elses event.

by staceylyn

My husband and I are leaving this week for a 5 day cruise to the Bahamas to celebrate our 5 year anniversary. I am 15 weeks along with baby number two (It's A Boy) and I feel really good. I am excited to have some down time.

by Middleton18

the cruise lines have now mostly changed their limits to 23 weeks or less at the time of DISEMBARCATION. if you are cruising, please re-check your cruise line's policies.

by kita09

I know this might sound crazy, but I am 31 weeks along, and we are actually planning on going camping at Beaver Creek in Minnesota next week!! We got a really nice air mattress and tent so I won't be sleeping on the ground, and I have always loved to be outdoors and I think it will be very relaxing. We'll bring food to grill out. There are some very gentle trails that I can walk down... I definitely want to get outside and be active while I still can, and I can't wait!

by SallysuePJ

by atrevino

We are going to Russia on our babymoon. I am very much looking forward to seeing Moscow and Vladimir Putin.

by julmom

Just finished planning my upcoming vacay before new baby comes out... We'll be going to Hawai'i in August to relax, vacay and also celebrate our first child's third birthday. I'll be about 29 weeks by then, and we are flying Hawaiian Airlines which allows you to fly up until 7 days before your due date! The only thing is, I haven't spoken to my OB about the trip, but I'm assuming he will say it's fine since I have had no complications and I'm not considered high-risk. WE CAN'T WAIT!!!!!!

by dijonne

My husband and I are going to Mexico in a few weeks for out babymoon ! We are going to the stop we went for our honeymoon .

by hermione76

I'll be 23 weeks when I go to Chicago to see my best friend. It's 13 hours so we are staying in Nashville overnight which is halfway there. I can't wait to shop there. The weather should be perfect!

by chellehooks

We are planning a trip to the Mall of America at the end of July. I will be at 17 weeks at that time so am not too worried. I am looking forward to taking my 8 year old daughter there as our last 3 some before the new little one.

by princessevas1

I'm flying back to the states from South Korea. I have a 15 hour flight to Atlanta and then a hour and a half flight to NC. I'm worried about the travel time and jet-lag, but I think I'll be ok.

by flashmommie

We're going to Homer, Alaska to enjoy a couples massage on the beach. Renting a luxury beach house with an amazing view of the ocean. Maybe we'll go out on a halibut fishing charter. Can't wait!!

by meghanlindstrom

I am going with my husband and his family to Florida in Nov. and I will be 26 weeks. I am excited to get to the warm weather and relax on the beach! My doc said I am ok to fly then so far as there are no complications and so far so good. We are super excited!

by VioletsSilverBlueWolf

I am 14 weeks along. I just got back from a girls trip, a cruise to Cozumel. It was very relaxing anf beneficial. I was able to spend time with other mothers and learn more. This is my 1st child so I am full of questions. Having 4 days of me time was very relaxing and helped relieve some of the stress I had been having. My husband and I have a trip to the Smokey Mountains planned in 3 weeks. That will be our time to get away togeather.

by tbartek

We booked a trip to the Bahamas before we even got pregnant. I'll be 12 weeks along when we hit the air. I plan on taking some Dramamine just in case the naseau kicks in. My doctor says it's perfectly safe. Plan on enjoying paradise while we can still stay at the adults only resorts. :)

by tigerdmb

We are heading to Chicago for the weekend. I will be 17 weeks. I am soo excited to do so baby shopping. We will know the sex by then.

by Mrs.EMS

We've planned a trip to Galveston, in December. My mom and I are going durning the week and the Papa and Daddy are coming on the weekend. Christmas time in galveston is wonderful, Its also my moms and my 40th Birthdays.

by babyhuey11

We took a cruise to Mexico for a week. The exercise was great. They have sooooo many stairs. I ate constantly but lost weight. All the food was prepared by exquisite chefs. They had buffet style and sit down restaurants. The buffet is not exactly sanitary. They provide hand sanitizer but after every trip to the buffet I found short black hair in my food. The food was great until I'd find a hair. This happened several times a day. But I wouldn't change anything. My husband and I had a great time. We are planning at least one more babymoon before I get too big and picky.

by MKBDS

is babymoons for lonesome ones?

by zro

I am a very young mother-to-be and single. My "partner" and I broke up before I found out and he wants nothing to do with me. What are some things I can do for my "babymoon" alone? Something that won't take too much time or money. I an stressing badly...

by linnybanks33

Can't wait until May. We're going to Las Vegas to stay in a suite and relax by the pool for 3 days :P

by BabyJenson

Is it bad that the first thing I thought about when finding out we were pregnant was, "What about our vacations we already have planned?!". With those now canceled, I started doing some research on Midwest Babymoon destinations. I like the idea of cozying up to a fireplace in a cabin overlooking the smokey mountains with a glass of the finest chocolate stout (for me) and sparkling cider for my beautiful mom to be. On a side note, my AAA magazine did a great feature on Walt Disney World for adults. After looking into it, there are some great spa/hotel options and plenty to do besides just the theme park thing. You can see more detailed info and suggestions on my blog Wonderful Whoopsie.

by wonderfulwhoopsie

Me and my husband never got a honeymoon. We really want to go to the bahamas on a cruise but I'm not sure if thats the best idea now. But I'm only 8 weeks along and have not had any morning sickness or anything.

by rebelmayer

I was brave and drove 16 hours to Phoenix for our wedding in the sun! We stopped every hour to walk a bit and took an hour for lunch and dinner. Stayed for 3 weeks and flew home. It was amazing, the most difficult part was trying to pull up my dress so I could use the rest room and squeezing into a 1939 Rolls Royce to be drivin to the reception after the ceremony, who can compain about that!! We just got home this week and I am now 26 weeks. We are planing a couple more out of town adventures before Mid May and then staying close to home. I can't wait to meet our son, and our daughter is getting so excited. She will be 5 at the end of May and her brother will join us about a month later; so I'm sure 16 hour drives will be out of the question for a while. Hope you all enjoy your babymoons!!

by desiree31211

My husband and I are going to mexico for about 2 weeks during sping break.. its going to be about a 9 hr flight.. thats the only part that i am going to hate.. how do u get up and move around on an airplane.. its already cramped as it is.. i will b about 11 weeks when we go. i just hope that i dont get to nauses.. but i think its going to be a experience i will never forget considering i have never been..lol

by PHYLLISFLEMING54

by kati2103

My husband are going to Las Vegas mid May for a whole week! We cannot wait! We already had the trip booked and just found out that I am expecting - I'll be 8 weeks when we go. So we won't be able to hike down the Grand Canyon as we had planned...but we are so excited!

by kittykat0401

we are hoping to go back to england this summer where we had our first baby last year, but daddy's reluctant to take the time off since he wants to save it all til november when baby #2 arrives!

by FranticScramble

My hubby and I are going to go camping and also to several festivals this summer. I am 8 weeks now, so I hope it wont be too hot to enjoy the trips

by jules4900

I am going to Myrtle Beach this weekend and it is a 7 hour drive from where I live. I hope I do well. Thankfully, my cousin is going and we can alternate the driving!

by MISSD123

We are going to Savannah, always a place I've wanted to see. It should be a romantic city to see together during our last few months as just husband and wife (not mom and dad). Luckily, my parents agreed to take the baby for spring break a few months after the birth to give us another vacation time together (We're planning Hawaii!)

by megevers

We've been planning to drive to Daytona Beach for a few months before we found out I was pregnant. I was already not excited about the 15 hour drive, let alone now with the nausea and the uncontrollable heartburn. But I think 7 days on the beach will make up for it :)

by MrsLindinger0905

We are just going to the beach about 30 minutes away and staying the night at a resort with a spa. While I go to the spa for a pre-natal massage my hubby is going to hit the gym. Then hopefully we can relax on the beach the rest of the day. I will be 32 weeks. :)

by topaz81@aol.com

My Husband and I are going on our Babymoon to the beach for our Babymoon . So excited to be away for 7 nights . I will be 18 weeks when we go , and we will know the sex of the baby by then , so lots of clothes shopping for baby !!! Enjoy Your Babymoons :)

by Hanners102310

This "babymoon" business is an important concept! I'm excited to spend time together away from work and extended family. Me and my hubby are all booked for a Bermuda to Puerto Rico cruise in October. I'll be exactly 23 weeks when we set sail! Hope you all enjoy your various trips.

by leemo24

This is such a good idea!! Babymoon :) I just informed my husband of this, lol. I am thinking sometime this September for our 2 year (I'll be in my 2nd trimester). A trip to Callaway Gardens or Helen GA....the mountains would be perfect! Thanks baby bump!

by BabyMaddrey

already have a needy 10month old, no time for a babymoon, hubby works 12 hours a day 7 days a week. it would be nice but i know it wont happen..

by Felyshia

by mbell771

We're heading to Hilton Head on July 29th and I can't wait by that time I'll be almost 12 weeks along so it should be a fairly comfortable drive down. But this is our last vacation before the baby and we're both so excited!

by katiek61506

We're going to Mackinac Island and Traverse City, Michigan. Can't wait!

by cmyagelo

by PrincessMaiger

We are taking a nice beach vaction with family to tell them we are expeting twins.

by law2112

Me and my wife choose a destination reasonably close to a hospital. I think that's the best way of having a vacation and not to worry so much about her health. -GAR Labs

by garlabs

I might be crazy but we are planning on going to Jamaica at 34-35 weeks. I don't think I would have planned it like this, but it's my sister's wedding, so I really don't want to miss it. I just have to get the okay from the doc and make sure I can get medical insurance and trip cancellation insurance.

by terilina

Just drove 13 hours straight to Iowa at 25 weeks. We only stopped twice because the husband wanted to make good time. I was aching!

by Blondathon

We are heading to Jamaica in a few weeks. I will be about 12 weeks along when we go and my doctor said to have fun and enjoy what will probably be our last trip alone for a while. I'm just hoping the nausea passes by then! Looking forward to a few days of R&R on the beach.

by MVThomas

We (now) live on the East coast. My family and a majority of my life long friends are on the west coast (and the girls are dying to throw me a baby shower)... Is it crazy to consider a trip out west that may be a bit more hectic than soothing?

by mrscac

We took a trip to San Francisco when I was almost 6mo along. it was great bc it was the city we met and fell in love. it was great we did lots of walking (and eating)!

by csamano22

We each had 2 free round trip flights with Airtran for giving up our seats like a year ago. We waited til the last minute to book them and had recently found out we were expecting. Therefore, we booked a weekend in San Fran in November (I'll be 14 weeks) and a weekend in NYC in January (I'll be 22 weeks) for some 2nd Trimester BaByMoOnInG!!!! :) Super excited (especially since the hubs has never been to either).

by dannielleandbilly

We are going on a cruise this weekend at 24 weeks. The drive will be prety tedious, but our doctor is in the loop and I plan on taking plenty of walking breaks. I think in the end it will be worth it. We planned it before we got pregnant and now it's turned into our "babymoon." :)

by Cynni7

I'll be 30 weeks pregnant when hubby and I will leave for our baby moon to St. Martin for a week, only a 3 Hour flight, and got the ok from dr. Looking forward to it!

by BellaN01

Trying to decide.... my husband and I have been planning a to the Virgin Islands in June where we will be sailing with some other friends. These plans started before we found out we were pregnant. I will be 32 weeks at the time, and so far I have gotten the go ahead from my doctor but I worry that I will be pretty uncomfortable that far alone in my pregnancy.... anyone else travel this far along in their pregnancy to hot tropical weather?? We would really love to go and unfortunately June is the only time that will work for everyone.

by liannaleiter

we've already planned a trip to ski in Utah. I hope I don't have trouble with altitude sickness.

by mwasserback2011

I'm thinking a cruise but I'm also kinda nervous about it.

by LaLouCO

We're going to a Sandals resort in St. Lucia. We went to one in the Bahamas for our honeymoon and had a wonderful time! We enjoyed the activities, dining, spa, and of course making friends with the guests and staff. We're very excited!
