Q&A: What blood tests do I need during pregnancy?

I want to keep my pregnancy as simple, with as few tests as possible. What blood tests do I really need?

The Bump Expert

There are certain basic blood tests one needs prior to getting pregnant or early in pregnancy. All women should have a complete blood count to check for anemia, a type and screen to check your blood type and see if you have any antibodies that could affect the fetus' blood count, a Rubella titer to see if you are immune to German measles (if you contract Rubella during pregnancy, the fetus can be severely affected), an HIV test, and a test for the Hepatitis B antigen.

Other blood tests are determined by your history. For example, if you have a personal or family history of thyroid disease, then thyroid function tests should be sent. Depending on your ethnic background, your doctor may screen you and/or your partner to see if you carry a gene for certain inherited diseases, such as Cystic Fibrosis and Tay Sachs.

i had my dr. test for CF and the blood test and down syndrome. They also did a few others that I don't really remember. I just remember they filled up a lot of viles of blood! I'll also be having the ultrasound check for down syndrome at 12 weeks. I don't have it in my family history, I'd just like to know. That will be my first ultrasound...exciting!

Blood typing is critical. It will help your doctor determine if it is recommended that you get a shot of RhoGam to prevent getting sensitized if you have an RH negative blood type.

Shelbee, Yes everyone does. Its really not as bad as people say. Just chug the juice, try to burb as little as possible and bring a book or something to do while you wait for an hour.

Q&A: What blood tests do I need during pregnancy?

I feel like I'm giving blood to a vampire. I had so many tests done and I'm only 30 but I guess that's how Duke Medical is plus this is my first. When I first got blood test done in February, I had an anemia, HIV test, syphilis, blood type, cholesterol (but that was on request since they were checking everything). They also did a blood on me to see if the baby had spina bifida. In my first trimester screening, I had a down syndrome, trisonomy 13 and 18 blood test done. I also had the glucose testing done early because of my mother's history of having gestational diabetes with me and low and behold I also have it. Since I'm in my second trimester I have to do a blood protein test soon.

If you work with children (school, hospital, etc.) or you are around children with disabilities, I'd recommend getting tested for cytomegalovirus (CMV). Many people get this and then become immune like chicken pox. It may have side effects like those of a common cold and it's really not a big deal. However, if you catch CMV while you're pregnant it can lead to a variety of disabilities such as vision loss, hearing loss and cognitive delays. Again, only get tested if you know you'll be in environments that will put you at risk. I don't think it's too common.
