Q&A: Second trimester tests?

i am 39 years old, with my 4th pregnancy. i had a quad screen at week 16. my doctor called me with the results yesterday. he said my screen came back positive, that i have a 1 in 75 chance of having a child with down syndrome. he told me that i need to schedule an amniocentesis. i knew all along that i would not do any invasive screening/testing. i have decided to only do a genetic sonogram, no amniocentesis. the main reason i do not want to have the amnio done is . . . the small chance of miscarriage. i have read that there is a 1 in 200 or 1 in 300 chance of miscarriage {due to the leakage of amniotic fluid at the puncture point}. even though that seems like a small chance, someone has to be that 1 in 200/300 and i don't want it to be me! i found a site {http://www.fetalscreening.com} that was very helpful. i understand that my age alone can put me in the "positive" range for my quad screening. i wish that my doctor, knowing my age, would have suggested the nuchal translucency along with the screening for fetal anueploidy earlier on {11-14 weeks} . . . because it is much more effective {80-90%} than a 2nd trimester genetic ultrasound and not invasive like the amnio.

Q&A: Second trimester tests?

Phase two ultrasound. I declined to have any other testing done (aside from the glucose tolerance test - passed) because it's not going to change anything and our decision to have this baby.

Q&A: Second trimester tests?

I just did the Materna-T test which is a blood test with the same accuracy as the amniocentesis without the risk of miscarriage. The test is completely non-invasive as it tests the mother's blood. As it is a genetic test, the results can also tell you the baby's gender. I was told by several medical practitioners that the Materna-T test will, in the next few years, do away with the amniocentesis.

Q&A: Second trimester tests?

angelainbama I told my Dr. the same thing at the beginning. My husband's aunt lost a baby due to a problem with Amnio so I refused. Good luck and a healthy pregnancy to all.

Q&A: Second trimester tests?

I don't know!! I have been struggling with this for weeks. Kaiser offers both the regular non-invasive genetic screening as well as the new blood test which is supposed to be about 99% accurate. The only issue is that the old school screening is more comprehensive than the new blood test. Kaiser doesn't want to pay for you to get both done, so you have to choose. Makes me wonder if I should have just gotten an amnio. I didn't want to go the invasive route but this is driving me nuts.

Q&A: Second trimester tests?

So far I had the quad test (negative) at my 1st tri screening, the AFP (fetal protein) blood test (passed), and in 2 weeks I have my fetal anatomy ultrasound. No invasive testing for me, unless it's the last resort. My prayers are with all of us preggers :)

Q&A: Second trimester tests?

I had the urine screening. Also, because I'm 37, and would not have an amino, I had two separate blood tests. One was for chromosomal diseases and deletions, which also tells you the baby's sex. The other tests for 100 different autosomal recessive carrier diseases. Both provided accurate, important information without being invasive.
