Q&A: Mid-pregnancy ultrasound?

I'm scheduled to have an ultrasound soon, in my 20th week. What should I expect to happen, and what's my doctor looking for?

Re: I'm scheduled to have an ultrasound soon, in my 20th week. What should I expect to happen, and what's my doctor looking for?

The Bump Expert

During the mid-pregnancy ultrasound (also called the standard ultrasound), usually around 20 weeks, your doc is basically checking to make sure baby's growing and developing properly. This generally includes taking baby's heartbeat, checking for physical abnormalities, confirming any suspicions of twins or other multiples, measuring the amount of amniotic fluid (to much or too little could signal a problem), checking the location of your placenta to be sure it isn’t covering the cervix, and taking lots of measurements to make sure baby is the right size for his gestational age. (If your babe measures very large or very small, you may be given a new due date!)

The truly exciting part about your 20 week ultrasound (well, besides the assurance that you’re growing a healthy baby)? This is your chance to catch a glimpse of what the little one looks like in there, and you’re likely to get a couple of printouts to show off to the fam! And, if you want to know baby’s sex, this is the moment of truth -- your doc should be able to detect your little one’s girlie or boyish bits on the ultrasound screen (if baby isn’t covering the goods with his or her arms or legs).

Me too. I had my first U/S at 10 wks during my 2nd doctor's visit (in her office). Then, I went to a hospital for the 1st Trimester Nuchal Translucancy Test at 12 wks. I'm actually going to request an U/S for each of my monthly visit with my doctor just becasue I want to see the baby.

Q&A: Mid-pregnancy ultrasound?

I think it really depends on your insurance/doctors office. I am seeing a midwife, so they don't have the equipment, and I have to see outside technicians. I would not have had one until my 20th week, but I had some spotting and was nervous, so the midwife kindly set one up - none of my friends saw theirs until the 20th week though. It seems to be pretty standard procedure. Although all my friends were jealous I got to see my baby sooooooo little! (8wks 2dys).

I had a first ultrasound at 8 weeks, then at 11 weeks and 15 weeks. My doctor does one during every visit and gives us several prints to take home. It's great to see the progress over the different months!

I had my nuchal traslucency test a week ago (at 12 weeks) and was able to watch the ultrasound. I asked the technician for a pic and he printed one out for me. Baby is small but you can totally make everything out! So cool..

Q&A: Mid-pregnancy ultrasound?

I'm 26 weeks with my first child and at my 20 week ultrasound I got to find out the sex of my baby and how the growth was progressing. They checked all of the baby's organs like the heart, heart beat and kidneys. They checked the spinal column and also checked the umbilical chord to make sure there were 3 viens (2 arteries), they checked the size of the brain and last, we found out we're having a boy!!! It was very neat and I loved it because it was a bonding experience for me and my husband and our baby. We got a really great picture of him flexing his arm muscles for us. We also got to take home a 5 minute DVD of the ultrasound and 10 snap shots. Congrats to all mother's out there!

Q&A: Mid-pregnancy ultrasound?

Usually the 20 wk ultrasound is an anatomy scan- to make sure everything is growing correctly and to see if there are any abnormalities. If there is a suspected probablem you will most likely have more ultrasounds if everything is totally normal usually that's the last time you see your baby until delivery

Q&A: Mid-pregnancy ultrasound?

I am not getting my first ultrasound until tomorrow and I am 18 weeks. It was really hard to go this long without one but my doctor found the heartbeat easily in the 1st trimester and it was strong and healthy and I also knew the exact day of my last period. So don't worry too much. I have a girlfriend who has already had 3 at 19 weeks and it was because they couldn't find a heartbeat with the doppler so it is kind of a blessing in disguise.

When you have your first really depends on your doctor. I've had one every month even though everything is normal. I'm 17 weeks now and this past week was the first visit where I haven't had one. I have my 20 week on Jan.4... SO EXCITED to find out what we are having!

Q&A: Mid-pregnancy ultrasound?

I had an u/s at 6 weeks 2 days because I had some spotting. I had another u/s at my first prenatal appt which was 11.5 weeks because I have a cyst on my ovary they wanted to check. My next u/s will be on January 29th to see the sex and do what my doctor calls an "anatomy ultrasound". But I'm with some of you other ladies...I wish I could have one at each appt just to make sure everything is great but it all depends on your doctor and/or insurance. Some insurance companies won't pay for more than two.

Q&A: Mid-pregnancy ultrasound?

Im 14 weeks and 3 days and I still have not had an ultrasound. My doctor does not plan on giving me one until around my 20th week. Everyone is different. Some women get it early due to not knowing for sure when their last period was or if the Doctor just wants to check the gestational age. I know people who have had several by the time they were at 14 weeks. However, my doctor feels the baby is healthy and there is no need until im farther along. I do wish thought that I already had some pictures, but it gives me something to look forward too!

Q&A: Mid-pregnancy ultrasound?

I had my first ultrasound at 10wks5d, when I had my first prenatal check-up. I have another one this Friday, at my 20wks1d mark. I cannot wait to find out the sex of the baby! It really just depends on how you're pregnancy is going and your doctor. I'm on a military base and it's pretty standard to do two a pregnancy here, unless there are problems throughout your pregnancy. I would reccommend Heartbeats at Home - it's a company and you can order online, where you rent/buy an at-home fetal heartbeat doppler. I love mine. I have had it for about a month and a half and have probably heard my baby's heartbeat at least 20 times. It's great being able to hear it and know that you're baby is doing okay. I would reccommend this to EVERY pregnant woman. It's amazing and only about $27 per month. I plan on using it until I can feel more consistent movements from my baby.

Q&A: Mid-pregnancy ultrasound?

okay first question first lol. what to expect? theyll ask u to lay down on the bed when u go in. then they tucka towel under the rim of ur pants. then they squirt this very warm gel on ur tummy. the gel is to help the device they use (i call it a wand) to work. they rub it all around ur tummy and on the tv moniter ull see ur baby and the placenta. theyll point body parts out to u and some places, like mine, switch it to 4d mode so u can see what ur baby looks like. its the coolest thing ull ever see. the only thing i worried about at my first ultrasound was they sometimes press hard on ur tummy but it doesnt hurt the baby and its just a tiny bit uncomfortable. everything they do is perfectly safe and its always a very enjoyable experience. at the end ull be given a paper to give to ur doc the next time u see him or her. on this paper its basically just sayin where ur placenta is- if its normal or if it could cause complications, if ur baby looks like its developing well, things like that. another thing u will get at the end is ultrasound pics!!! u can show ur friends and family ur babys face, arms, hands, feet, and if u decide to find the gender, theyll give u apic of either its a boy! or its a girl! okay now for the whats my doc lookin for? they just wanna see ur babys progress, if theres any sign of disability or deformity, and to check ur fluid and all that. so instead of worrying bout having an ultrasound, just lay back and enjoy cuz its one of the highlights of being pregnant!!!!!

Q&A: Mid-pregnancy ultrasound?

I'm at 14 weeks, and the only reason I got to see my little one early is because I had some spotting. It was neat to see the heart beating at 7 weeks, but my little jelly bean wasn't much to look at ... although, yes! -- very reassuring. Now the heartbeat, oh my! That is just magical to listen to. That is absolutely my favorite part of my appointments!

If you want to see your baby sooner than the doctor's office is offering try looking for a free clinic in your area. I got an ultrasound at 5 weeks to confirm my pregnancy and then again at 8 weeks at the clinic for free. Their equipment isn't the best sometimes but it is reassuring even if all you see is a blob! :)

Q&A: Mid-pregnancy ultrasound?

I'm now at 20wks and I've had 4 ultrasounds already. The reason behind that though is that i was very ill and they wanted to make sure that my illness wasnt affecting the baby(which it wasnt thank goodness). My doctor did tell me that it's not normal for her to give so many ultrasounds, so I feel special that I have so many pictures and was able to see my peanut at 5wks, 9wks, 13wks and then 17wks. I know I'll get at least one more too because my child is modest and wouldn't let us see it's gender on the last US.

allienorris |

Q&A: Mid-pregnancy ultrasound?

I'm 15 weeks and have seen my baby 4 times already in an ultrasound. the first (6 weeks) was to confirm pregnancy, the second (8 weeks) was because my doctor didnt remember why he told me to schedule another appointment so soon, the third (12 weeks) was because the father was with me for the first time and the fourth (15 weeks) was because i was very sick and my mom took me to the doc and asked to see an ultrasound. I don't understand why doctors are so picky about letting moms see the baby, its reassuring and i'm fortunate to have a doctor who understands that!

I had an Ultrasound at my 10 week, 12 week, 16th week, and I am going for my 20th week u/s next week. I found it weird when people told me that they only at 1 or 2 u/s. Q&A: Mid-pregnancy ultrasound?

I had an U/S at 5 weeks, 8 weeks, and I'm scheduled for one this Wednesday at 12 weeks. The only time I didn't have one was at my 10 week midwife appt and we listened to my baby's heartbeat with the doppler. As far as I know, I'm getting a U/S at every visit going forward as well. If you live in Atlanta, Dr. Bruscato (Northside Hospital) is who you want to see :)

luvinlife30 |

Q&A: Mid-pregnancy ultrasound?

we don't get an ultrasound until week 20!! you're all lucky to be getting them so soon! I think every office is different with how many they want to give and when...........

s2redmond |

Q&A: Mid-pregnancy ultrasound?

20 weeks seems standard, but I think it depends on your insurance and perhaps also your state. In Mass. they recommend an early screening test at 12 weeks. This is a U/S that allows them to test for Down's and other abnormalities. So I got a sneak peek of my baby at 12 weeks gestation. Tomorrow is my 20-wk appointment and I get to see the baby again and find out whether it's a girl or boy! Whether you get to have others depends on your risk factors, concerns/complications, and also what insurance will cover. I don't know too many hospitals or doctors that will do them just for fun, unfortunately!

I saw my little bean the first time at 6 weeks and 6 days, or, 7 weeks. :) there wasn't a whole lot to be seen but it was still amazing. Now, i've lucked out. i took mommy and me classes that gave me a free ultrasound. I get to see baby again at 13 weeks and 4 days thanks to them. I'm so stoked. Then my next one is for 20 weeks, which if they can't tell later this week, i'll see the gender. I hope so soooooo bad that i'll see it at the one this week.

Q&A: Mid-pregnancy ultrasound?

I had my first sonogram at 12 weeks (Nuchal Translucency) and my next one won't be until 20 weeks. They told me up front that most insurance plans do not cover ultrasounds at every appointment unless it is deemed "medically necessary" by your doctor.

amanda2486 |

Q&A: Mid-pregnancy ultrasound?

It seems pretty standard in Canada that you only get one ultrasound at 20weeks unless medically necessary. We are on government-funded health care, so I think the rule is that if you want more "unnecessary" ultrasounds, you have to pay for them out of pocket...

Q&A: Mid-pregnancy ultrasound?

I am in Canada andI had my first ultrasound in the docs office at 11 weeks where I heard the heart beat for the first time and was relieved to know it was strong and healthy. The first picture ultrasound was also at 11 weeks but my doc had to schedule it at the hospital since his office doesn't have all the equipment. While I was there we got pics of the baby as well as finding out I was further along than first calculated - the baby was measuring around 15-16 weeks! Now I am gearing up for the 20 week ultrasound to find out what we're having. I haven't had to pay for anything yet except the anti-nausea pills which my work benefits cover.

VeryLilMama |

Q&A: Mid-pregnancy ultrasound?

I had my first U/S at 10 weeks because we went in to hear the heart beat and didn't hear anything, turns out I was a week less than they thought(so we actually tried to hear the heart beat at 9 weeks instead of the standard 10). And now I'm going in for my second U/S at 21 weeks. However we found a very good and affordable 3/d 4/d ultrasound place close to where we live and got to find out the sex at 17 weeks, :) we are having a boy!!

Q&A: Mid-pregnancy ultrasound?

I had my first US at 5w4 days because I had a previous ectopic pregnancy. It looked like a little bean but it was better news than the first time we were in that room. I went in for my 2nd appt yesterday and I was 9w4d but we didnt get an US. My DR did the doppler to hear the heartbeat. Its still kind of early and neither me or my husband heard it but my DR heard 3 beats before the baby rolled. It rolled a couple of times while she was trying to listen so while we didnt get to see the baby, she heard it and thats all that matters. I wish we had more US's but I'm excited for my next appt 1/13 when I'll be 13w4d and we will definitely be able to hear it. I might ask for a US just to reassure ourselves that all is ok. I don't think we can make it to 20w without seeing it again.

Q&A: Mid-pregnancy ultrasound?

They don't usually take an ultrasound if they can hear the baby's heart-beat just fine. I had a test at 7.5 weeks because they still couldn't hear the heartbeat for my baby. But that was because my uterus is tipped to the back, and so it was harder to get a reading. When we went in to get the ultrasound, her heartbeat (we didn't know at the time that it was a girl) was ridiculously strong. Baby was healthy - just hiding! But they wont do the ultrasound unless they feel a screening for abnormalities is in order.

Q&A: Mid-pregnancy ultrasound?

I'm going in for a Level 2 ultrasound on 6/22. I'll be 18w5d at that appt. They scheduled me for the L2 since I was given the MMR vaccination while pregnant (I didn't know I was preggo at the time) and was then referred to the Genetic Counselor, who reassured me that implantation hadn't taken place yet and I was ok. Come to find out I'm immune to Rubella anyway (german measles) but that's a whole other story. I had my first U/S at 7w just to find out how far along I was, then I had another at 11w5d and it was so cool to see the little peanut moving around, but not feel him/her. I'm excited to see all the LO organs and stuff to make sure that they are growing as they should be. I also can't wait to find out if it's a boy or girl! I'm just hoping for a happy & healthy LO, but DBF really wants a little boy. He is more excited about the pregnancy than I am, mostly since he doesn't have to do all the work...lol!

Q&A: Mid-pregnancy ultrasound?

A lot of women think that 20 weeks is the soonest they can figure out the sex of their baby. I went in to an ultrasound at 12 weeks 3 days and the ultrasound tech was able to say that it was a boy. She said she was about 80% sure and sure enough, 20 weeks came along and yes it's still a boy! At 12 weeks the sex organs differentiate, so if you get the right position and an experienced tech, you can find out sooo much sooner!

Q&A: Mid-pregnancy ultrasound?

I had my 8 week u/s done last week, and they told me my baby may have a growth on his or her head! And now I have to wait until im 11-13 weeks to know for sure.. this is the scariest thng ever! I think I may be getting a 2nd opinion, they still have yet to send my u/s pics over to the maternal fetal medicine clinic (its been 2 days), so I can't even schedule. We will be doing a detailed ultrasound. It just sucks having to wait to see if everything is okay. I have been holding onto the fact that science only goes so far, and then comes God.

im 13 weeks today and have had 4 ultrasounds but thats because ive had problems but it really just depends on your ob. with my first child i only got two ultrasounds my whole pregnancy and the 1st wasnt until i was 22 weeks. it all depends on your doctor and what your insurance will pay for :) no worries you'll have a picture to show off soon :)

Q&A: Mid-pregnancy ultrasound?

At least where I go for my OB the practice is 20 weeks (probably cause of the cost that your insurance may not cover) but I had an emergency one at week 9 because I was told initially that I was 12 weeks and when they couldn't find the heartbeat everyone kind of panicked and set me up with the u/s tech only to find out that it was simply my due date was off by a few weeks. I'm 17 weeks now so only a few more left to go and hopefully the baby will cooperate and we'll see who wins the bet! lol :D

Q&A: Mid-pregnancy ultrasound?

I just want to say that ultrasounds are not all that they are cracked up to be ladies...and NOT always necessary, even though a glimpse of baby can be enticing, especially if you want to find out the gender. Do your research...be informed and ask questions for the sake of your unborn baby!...there are alot of articles out there pointing out the risk factors that you subject baby to by having multiple ultrasounds, which many doctors describe as "routine". There are too many women who don't ask questions because they don;t want to feel dumb or like they aren't doing everything possible for baby...but trust me, it is YOUR body...don't let your Dr. persuade you into anything you are not comfortable with. Just think...they used to X-Ray pregnant women not that long ago and we know what harm that can do now!

Q&A: Mid-pregnancy ultrasound?

I had my first last week at 4-5 weeks, and I will have another next week, and every two weeks throughout the rest of the pregnancy. My OB-GYN loves doing U/S's.. :) . However, I do not know when I will get an actual photo. It all depends on your doc
