Is getting an early ultrasound okay?

It seems OBs want moms-to-be to get their first ultrasound as early as eight weeks, but I have read about the sound waves possibly disrupting the baby's growth process at that early stage. Is this true?

The Bump Expert

An ultrasound during the first trimester appears to be not only safe but, in many cases, essential to confirming a normal pregnancy. Furthermore, the most accurate screening test available for Down syndrome involves a first trimester ultrasound.

But, an ultrasound does involve energy that can theoretically lead to temperature increases when the fetus is exposed to it for a long time. Certain types of ultrasound tests expose the fetus to more energy (and potential temperature increases) than others. The bottom line is that an ultrasound can be an important diagnostic tool and during all trimesters should be performed by an experienced technician or physician.

re: Q: Early Ultrasound OK?

I had an ectopic last year and early u/s caught it just in time before rupture. I am definitely FOR early u/s. This time we had one at 7 &1/2 weeks and it was great to see the baby's heart beating.

re: Q: Early Ultrasound OK?

Especially if you're over 35 like I am, an early u/s is not harmful, they're a learning tool for you and your doctor and will put your mind at ease. We were able to hear our baby's heartbeat at 7 weeks 4 days!

re: Q: Early ultrasound okay?

is it strange that i dont get to have my first u/c until 10 wks

re: Q: Early ultrasound okay?

I don't think it's weird to have your first u/c at 10 weeks. My first OB visit isn't until I am 9 1/2-10 weeks, and that's when my first one will be, too

My doctor is only booking my first ultrasound now, at 19 weeks! So frustrating to not have seen our baby yet.

re: Q: Early ultrasound okay?

My doctor didnt seem to think an ultrasound was needed intill the end of April. We dont even know how far along I am now , he's guessing 5-7 weeks , but it could be almost 9 weeks b/c of a weird AF in Jan. Does anyone find that strange? I think we should be checking sooner....

re: Q: Early ultrasound okay?

Jewels, Don't go by what you read on the message boards as every doctor and practice is different. I am pretty much in the same boat you. My first Dr. Appt was around 7 weeks (per their count) but I won't get my first US until this week (wk 12). This is standard practice for these doctors as my co-worker and her SIL also used them for their second children. Unless you have a history of complications, some practices just don't see the need for an US so early. This will be my first child so I can't wait unitl I hear the heartbeat & they confirm all is well. GL to you!

re: Q: Early ultrasound okay?

By my last periods calculation I should be 8 weeks. But I think I'm really only 6 weeks. I got my first u/s on the day of my 8th week and the doctor still couldn't see anything. He located the Gestational Sac (SP?). He looked a little concern and send me for some blood work and scheduled another u/s in one week. I'm a little nervous. If I am 6 weeks should he be able to see something?

Q&A: Are early ultrasound okay?

with this pregnancy I was going to the hospital for blood tests and u/s as early as 4 weeks. I had to go for blood every 2 days to make sure my hormone level was increasing as should be, and we finally saw a heartbeat at 6wk 6 days. My previous pregnancy ended at 23wks and 6days due to Limb Body wall Defect, so this time I went super early and thing are great, I am due in only 22 days but im already 2cm dialated and 50% effaced! So shes coming early! But good luck to you all and im all for early ultrasounds!

Q&A: Are early ultrasound okay?

I am scheduled to go back in at 10w 5d for blood work and my OB mentioned possibly being ably to hear a heratbeat at that time but didn't say anything about getting an ultrasound. I guess each doctor is different.

Q&A: Are early ultrasound okay?

My first ultrasound is on the 31st I should be about 8 weeks according to this site, I can't wait to see if everything is ok and be sure that there really is a baby in there, and that he/she has a heartbeat. I dont even have a doctors appt but they scheduled this ultrasound.... my question is for the first U/S is it pelvic/vaginal.... do I need to have a full bladder??? If anybody knows I would really appreciate it the girls at my doctors office are not helpful at all, thanks!

kellyc07 |

Q&A: Are early ultrasound okay?

I was told you need to have a full bladder for any ultrasound with the OB, and also told you need a full bladder everytime you have a check up during your pregnancy as they take a urine sample each time. At least that is how they have done at my sister in law's doctor office, and at my doctor office.

Q&A: Are early ultrasound okay?

ok so I had an ultrasound today at my first appt with the doctor. By my calculations I should be 4-5 weeks. The doctor said he couldn't see anything however the nurse told me she clearly saw the sac. They are doing repeat blood work monday to check levels. I have had no cramping spotting or bleeding; The doctor is also ordering another ultrasound Tuesday with someone else as he said he wasnt to good at doing them......anyone else have something like this? I dont want to spend the weekend worrying although i know it is easier said then done! This is our first and I am over 35 so I know I am already in a high risk category.

Q&A: Are early ultrasound okay?

I found out I was pregnant almost 2 weeks ago. I called my Dr. right away and he gave me an apt. a week later. I just went to the Dr. two days ago and he already did an u/s. He figured I was only about 5 weeks. I was able to see and take home a picture of the sac and what he called the yolk. I go back in 4 more weeks. It was so nice and to be able to have an early u/s, especially since this is my first pregnancy. I am not quite so nervous, but anxious to see the heart beat next time.

Q&A: Are early ultrasound okay?

they just gave me my first ultrasound, and i'm only five weeks. don't get me wrong, that's crazy early, but i'm grateful because that's how they found out how far along i was. it's not a bad thing, but i imagine it probably could have waited.

Q&A: Are early ultrasound okay?

My first Ultra sound will be in 2 weeks from today. I went to the doctor a week ago to confirm. Since I haven't had my period since July (I went off BC then), I had no idea how far along I was. The Dr. thought maybe 3 to 5, maybe even 6 weeks along. She said I could schedule it earlier, but with the holidays I thought it would be easier after. Though I am excited to find out how far along I really am, hopefully she can tell then! So when I get the u/s I would be somewhere between 6 and 9 weeks. I am hoping it's to the point we can hear the heartbeat. That will ease my mind so much!

Q&A: Are early ultrasound okay?

I had a misscarrige 2 years ago so my Dr. wanted me early to get an u/s to make sure it wasn't ectopic. We were able to see a small sac with a lil dot inside he named the baby and measured 4w. and 6d....i go back at 7w 6.d for another u/s and to hear the heartbeat...he said he will probably be checking on me more often the first whole trimester d/t the previoius m/c and other complecations i have had in the past...so far so good:)

Lewy4502 |

Q&A: Are early ultrasound okay?

I had an early ultrasound. at six weeks But I also have epilespy and I have had two previous miscarriages. When I was pregnant last year I had mine at 10 weeks and they couldn't detect a heartbeat. So having one early was reasurring to me.I am still nervous about the next one because I worry the heart will stop beating.Even though worrying makes it worse.Getting to my point I think they are a good thing but from what I have heard unless you have had complications in the past they usually don't do it until your at least 10 weeks. :)
