Q&A: Important questions to ask my doctor if I'm having twins?

What are some important questions I need to ask my doc if I’m having twins?

Re: What are some important questions I need to ask my doc if I’m having twins?

The Bump Expert

First things first, you’ll want to find out whether you’re having  monochorionic twins (identical babies who share the same amniotic sac) or dizygotic twins (fraternal babies who have their own sacs). This is the most important thing to clarify with your doctor if you’re having multiples, since monochorionic twins need a little extra attention when monitoring their development and you’ll want to make sure both of your babies are getting enough care.

By nature, more health issues are taken into consideration during multiple pregnancies, but don’t let that stress you out. Knowing the right questions to ask will help you take preventative measures to successfully detect -- and correct -- potential complications. After you find out what type of twins you’re having, here are five more questions you should ask your doc:

1.    Should I see an MFM (maternal-fetal medicine specialist, perinatologist) during my pregnancy?
These MDs have received higher levels of training specifically for high-risk pregnancies and can help ensure you’re being monitored appropriately.
2.    Does each baby have its own placenta and amniotic sac?
Babies who share a placenta and amniotic sac need to be watched closely to ensure they remain healthy in their shared space.
3.    Are my babies the same size?
Your babies should grow at about the same rate. If one’s smaller than the other, this may be a sign of distress.
4.    Are the amniotic fluid levels balanced?
Excess amniotic fluids are also a potential sign of distress.
5.    What is my cervical length?
This is something that’s often overlooked by many doctors. A thinning or shortening cervix can be a telltale sign of a problematic pregnancy.

Above all, don’t be afraid to call or email a nurse or MD with any questions or concerns -- remember, they’re there to help.

Q&A: Important questions to ask my doctor if I'm having twins?

It's also important to ask your doctor about his/her c-section rates with multiples. If it's high, find another doctor who has more experience delivering multiples naturally!

Definitely ask if you should be on more that just the pernatal vitamin, I was put on folic acid in addition to the prenatal vitamin, ask your OB about how far in the pregnancy before s/he will induce you? (I hear it get very uncomfortable towards the end) Mine was not going to let me go past 38 weeks. Any work restrictions (if you are working now), the size of the babies will be measured with your monthly ultrasound and the ultrasound tech should be able to answer questions about amniotic sac and placentas. (If not they will ask the perinatologist) My twins were born at 29 weeks because I had a rare condition of cord displacement of identical twins. From my experience the monthly ultrasounds help check the babies and follow the restrictions of the doctor the best you can. Carry paper and pen with you at all times to write down any questions for your OB. Mine was very helpful and when I was put on hospital bedrest was there everyday to check on my babies. Also check into a local Moms of Multiples group they can help you with many questions also. Our local group gives a trial membership if you are pregnant. It is a great place to find people who can relate and assist with asking questions about the pregnancy, having other children, things that happen when they are growing, breastfeeding (if you choose to), sometimes even yard sales. I can say that my local group has a Q&A for concerns and whatever we need to ask. It is also a great excuse to have "Mommy time". Good luck and you can make it through. :)

Cord Blood Banking? Got Twins? Read This. Cord Blood Banking? Got Twins? For those having twins and considering cord blood banking, Americord is an ideal choice since they offer the best price for twins, for cord blood or cord blood and cord tissue. You can find their twin pricing here: Cord Blood Banking? Got Twins? Read This. If the children are identical, the cord blood should be a genetic match for both children, however, a lot of people store both anyway since you could use two samples in case there are multiple transplants needed. Also, the more cells that are used for transplant, the better the outcomes. Mention this post, and get an extra $100 discount for cord blood banking (twins only) or $200 discount for cord blood and cord tissue banking (twins only). They even match any other cord blood bank prices. http://wifeispregnant.com/2012/03/06/cord-blood-banking-got-twins-read-this/

Q&A: Important questions to ask my doctor if I'm having twins?

of course I am a researcher and I heard of something called vanishing twin syndrome which is when one baby is to week and not able to grow so the other twin absorbs it. FREAKED me out asked my doctor about it usually happens before you even know you are pregnant. set up an ultrasound by the end of your first trimester just to feel safe they are still both there. If you lose sleep over it and you cant get an ultrasound never feel stupid about going to the er and tell them you want an ultrasound.

I just read an article that says it's proven that mothers of twins (not conceived artificially) are physically stronger than moms of singletons, and actually live longer. http://www.nbcnews.com/id/42981556/ns/health-childrens_health/t/moms-twins-may-live-longer-study-says/
