The Bump Expert

We bet no one warned you about this one before you got pregnant, huh? You expect the nausea, the crazy cravings, and the swollen feet. But excess saliva? Seriously? Unfortunately, it’s one of those rarely talked about pregnancy symptoms. On the bright side: it's a harmless symptom and generally doesn’t last long. On the not-so-bright-side: it can definitely get pretty embarrassing in certain social settings and it tends to make nausea even worse. So what’s behind it? Hormones, most likely. Excess saliva usually plagues women who are experiencing particularly bad morning sickness and/or heartburn. So unless you would like to add a spit cup to your accessories closet, there’s not much else to do but wait for this symptom to pass and try and stay hydrated. You can also try brushing your teeth to keep any bad tastes from driving you crazy.

I was wondering about that! I was sure it was just in my head, good to know I haven't been imagining it.

I hope thats what is happening. Im 18 weeks and this just started happening today after I had some cavities filled. So its either the pregnancy or the fact that there was a man drilling my teeth earlier.

Q: Why is my mouth watering so much?

I don't notice it during the day, but the past few mornings I've been waking up to a big, embarrassing pool of drool on my pillow. Glad to hear there's a reason!

I have heard eating salt and vinegar chips helps. I bought two bags since I already like them but that was a week ago and I still haven't felt like eating them.

Q: Why is my mouth watering so much?

I'm in my 5th month and it's still going on. I found that chewing gum all day helps a lot but at bedtime I have to sleep with a folded towel on my pillow.

Im 14 weeks and this has been going on for a while now. Probably ever since week 9 or 10. Its terrible! I have so much saliva that if I keep swallowing it, it makes me feel sick. Im glad my boyfriend understands. Im constantly running to the bathroom sink to spit. He just teases me about how attractive I am when I do that. haha. I hope it goes away soon. Its been my least favorite symptom!

I didn't have this happen with my first two, but this baby I have had it happen since 3 weeks pregnant and at 19 weeks...it's still horrible! And it totally adds to my stomach feeling upset! I wish there were ways to help, but sadly I haven't found any! At least I only have about 20 weeks left of this annoying symptom! haha

I am 7wks and was wondering why every time I bent over to pick something off the floor, saliva would fly/drop out of my mouth onto the rug. Whew! It never occurred to me to check my pillow in the morning.

I'm only on my 6th week and this started happening. I feel like this is making me have morning sickness. Sometimes pretzels help. My nose is also very runny all the time now.

Q: Why is my mouth watering so much?

Haha, I didn't notice the saliva until I realized that every time I'm not talking, my mouth is hanging open! Sleeping, sitting on the couch, typing on the computer...my mouth is always open! Apparently, my body was asking my subconscious to air out my mouth to dry up some of that extra spit. I don't advocate brushing your teeth a ton, though, because for me that actually seems to increase my saliva production.

chewing some sweets is curing me right now for extra saliva. And I try to get a good sleep. It comforts me alot.

Good to know! I (like a few others on here) completely thought I was imagining this!
