Q&A: Spotting during the 1st trimester?

I just saw some spotting and am freaking out. I’m still in my first trimester -- am I having a miscarriage?

Re: I just saw some spotting and am freaking out. I’m still in my first trimester -- am I having a miscarriage?

The Bump Expert

Not necessarily...and while it's important to call your doc, it's just as important to sit down, relax, and breathe for a minute. About 20 to 30 percent of women experience bleeding in the first trimester, and only about half of this number actually miscarry.

So what else could it be? If it's the week or two after conception likely occurred, it may be implantation bleeding. This happens when your little fertilized (yay!) egg starts burrowing into your uterus, and can appear as light spotting for anywhere from a few hours to a few days.

Since your cervix is especially sensitive right now, you might notice bleeding after sex. If this happens, wait to have sex again until you've spoken with your doc. (But not because sex can cause miscarriage! It can't! But, your doctor can help you avoid further irritation.) Bleeding can also be a sign of infection in your pelvic cavity or urinary tract, or may simply be a result of the increased blood flow to your cervix.

That said, it's still important to call your doctor whenever you notice bleeding. Though it could be nothing, it also could be a sign of ectopic pregnancy, molar pregnancy, or miscarriage. No matter what the cause, though, our initial recommendation stands -- sit down and take a deep breath. Worrying won't change a thing.

re: Q: Bleeding -- is it miscarriage?

I had a total meltdown a couple of days ago when I had spotting and cramping. Feeling much better after seeing my doctor today. Everything looks good ... we'll see how the blood work turns out.

re: Q: Bleeding -- is it miscarriage?

This morning I had some brownish/white discharge when using the bathroom. No severe cramping or bright red blood. It is only presnt when I wipe though. I called the dr office and the nurse told me to stay off my feet today, that it is most likely old blood from describing it. I hope all is well, I do not have my appt until Thursday! Forever away!

re: Q: Bleeding -- is it miscarriage?

So i started wearing a pad today due to all the discharge at work...on my way home from work i got bad cramps that i thought was gas..then felt like i got my period. I rushed in my house and into the bathroom...surprise ...the pad was full of blood..not soaked..but like a normal period..and i'm about 7 weeks pregnant.. Anyone else experience this? I called my OB/GYN right away...my dr wasn't on call..and he basically just told me to hang out through the weekend and i see any clots or bleed worse...to go in on Monday...he wasn't very reassuring though....i'm freaking out..

re: Q: Bleeding -- is it miscarriage?

I had slight bleeding, only when i wiped, then little (gross but the only way i can describe it) brownish, pinkish snot lite things. The past 3 nights (only) they got bigger about the size of a m&m. Went to the Dr. she did blood work on Monday (3/30/09) and my hormone levels were @ 74,000, went back yesterday (4/02/09) and my hormone levels dropped to 70,000, she said they should have doubled. I'm scared and worried dont really know what this means or what to expect??? I'm 10wks. 3 days.

re: Q: Bleeding -- is it miscarriage?

I just experienced some bleeding at 10 weeks. I got home from some errands and saw my underwear was stained and then a few minutes later a small gush (if that makes sense) of blood came out (scary!). The rest of the day and next day it was really light spotting close to nothing. I saw my doctor on Monday and he did an exam and we heard the baby's heartbeat. No blood tests or anything, but he seemed to think everything was fine and normal.

re: Q: Bleeding -- is it miscarriage?

I am 10 weeks and 3 days today and last night I was out to eat and went to use the restroom because I felt like I was leaking something and when I went to the bathroom there was bright red blood. And it flowed for about 5 minutes and tapered off. Went to the ER and had more blood throughout the night and early morning, but no clotting or real bad cramping. I have been feeling slightly achy since yesterday and today still and still having some bleeding. The did the U/S, took blood and everything came back ok, but still not relaxed since there is still blood and they don't know why yet. I am going to see my doctor on Monday to follow up. Has anyone had an experience like this and everything was ok? They are calling it a threatened miscarriage and told me to rest for two days.

re: Q: Bleeding -- is it miscarriage?

I'm 13 weeks and have had light spotting (brownish/Pink) when I wipe for almost a week. I havent called my Doc. since I have an appt. this Fri. I'm sure it's fine, but it is a little scary since it's all of the sudden. I'm sure it's fine.

Q&A: Spotting during the 1st trimester?

I've been bleeding now - well more or less spotting - for almost a whole month now. Sometimes it'll stop, but a day or two later, it's back again. It's usually dark red or brown. No cramps or anything and it's not heavy either. I mean, I could probably wear one pad for days and never leak through. I called Planned Parenthood and they said that I may be pregnant, but not to worry. "Bleeding during the first trimester is normal" they said. If my pregnancy test comes back negative in a few weeks, I should go in though they said. Oh God. I hope they're right!!!

Q&A: Spotting during the 1st trimester?

I've been off the pill for 4 months and have still not had a normal cycle. I've been trying to chart, but it's been difficult to get a baseline of how long my cycle is, when I'm ovulating, etc. because nothing's been normal since getting off the pill. At the suggestion of my sister (who is a nurse) I took a pregnancy test and it came back positive (plus two others just to make sure!). However, I've had light bleeding for about a week. It's not heavy with clots like a period, but it's definitely present. The Dr. took blood earlier this week (HCG level was 4,733) and again today (have to wait till Monday to get that level back). She said if the level doubles it's most likely that I'm pregnant... crossing fingers that I am!! Still a little unsettled about the bleeding though :/

Q&A: Spotting during the 1st trimester?

I am currently 7 weeks pregnant and had sex with my husband last night. This morning, I had some very scant brownish spotting when I wiped. Couple hours later, I started cramping very slightly. Then it became strong and very menstrual-like, and came in waves every 5 minutes or so. Called the OB on-call and she said this was very normal and to keep an eye on the flow. If it increases dramatically I should go to the ER. Woke up from a nap right after that call (finally getting a little rest!) and when I peed, a large, mucousy, bright red tissue "string" was dangling out. Now, I still have scant spotting with each wipe but now it's reddish/pink. HELP! Has anyone experienced this? I am so scared and feel like this is the beginning of the end for our baby.

Q&A: Spotting during the 1st trimester?

I think I'm about 9 week pregnant give or take a week or two and I began some sporatic spotting and cramping two days after I found out I was pregnant. I passed a couple of clots today. I'm 38 years old and this pregnancy is extremely unexpected - we were NOT trying, but after the initial shock - ok, so I'm still in shock - we getting used to the idea of adding to our family. We already have two beautiful, healthy girls that will be 7 and 10 when the baby is born. Anyway - I'm very nervous about whether this pregnancy is a go - how do you tell people when you're clueless if this pregnancy is viable. I can't tell my children - they go to the school where I work and I'm not ready to tell my boss. . . meanwhile, I don't have maternity insurance and my ob's office told me they wouldn't see me without insurance. I haven't been able to get in touch with the financial aid office of the local hospital clinic and the best I've been able to do is chat with a local RN Midwife. . . to say the least I feel I'm in limbo - how can I attach myself to this baby who might not be, who I'm not actually thrilled to be having . . . I know if the pregnancy happens I'll fall in love with the baby. . . with hormones and all I'm a bit of a basketcase. . .

Q&A: Spotting during the 1st trimester?

Just wanted to follow up on my post from last week because I never see the "after" stories from people and you never know what happened to them. I had a miscarriage and it is by far the worst experience I have ever endured in my life. I am working through a lot of anger and grief right now; we wanted this baby so bad and never imagined THIS happening. You imagine your pregnancy as all rosy and happy and romantic and then WHAM this happens to you. Guess I don't want to be Debbie Downer, but all of you out there TTC or blissfully counting down the days to your first ultrasound or fetal doppler just remember, it can happen and it will rock your world. I wish all of you out there that are healthy in your pregnancy all the best!

Q&A: Spotting during the 1st trimester?

I've heard some women say that they still had a period the first couple months while they were pregnant. I've even heard some say they had a period the whole pregnancy. Is that even possible? Has anyone heard anything aboutt his?

Q&A: Spotting during the 1st trimester?

I know how it is, how can you NOT worry? :(. I was hospitalized at the ER on Monday night due to some spotting I was having. They couldn't find the exact cause of my bleeding (it wasn't actual red or pink blood, it was brownish/tan-ish along with discharge) and I was diagnosed with a urinary tract infection (UTI). on the answer section of this question it says that a UTI could also cause a bit of bleeding.

Q&A: Spotting during the 1st trimester?

I am 6w2d and I started bleeding about a week ago, not a lot of blood but enough that i had to wear a panty liner, and there was blood on the toilet tissue each time i wiped. I was so freaked out, this is my first pregnancy. I thought i was having a miscarriage. My dr. took me in right away like 10mins after i phoned. It turns out that I had a very bad bladder infections and a yeast infection *YAY* Apparently bladder and yeast infections in pregnancy causes bleeding (sometimes lots) I had NO symptoms of a bladder or yeast infection it was detected through a urine test. Anyways I went for an ultrasound today, the baby looks great, they found the heartbeat flicker and my HGC levels are doubling every 48hrs. So everything is great, and both my infections are finally clearing up. So bleeding doesn't always mean miscarriage even if it's quite a bit of blood. Hope that is helpful for some!

Q&A: Spotting during the 1st trimester?

to jmmiller28, i dont' know if you'll even see this post, but i know exactly what you're going through. With our first pregnancy I was 10wks pregnant & started to spot over a weekend. I didn't think much of it, didnt want to get too worked up, since I knew it was going to be a day or two before my Dr. would see me. I called the Dr. on Monday b/c i was still having light spotting, she told me even though I was at 10wks our baby was so small & underdeveloped that I'd most likely miscarried at 6 wks & my body was only then dealing with it. It was such a horrible blow for us, it does completely change your views of pregnancy. I didn't think I wanted to get pregant again for a while. It's been about 5 months since we got that news & we're pregnant again. I'm excited but terrified, I don't think I'll relax until we have our first Dr's appt & are able to see how this pregnancy has progressed.

Q&A: Spotting during the 1st trimester?

so i woke up this morning and had some light spotting. i am 9 weeks 5 days and am so scared. the spotting was only visible when wiping and even then there wasn't that much...but i'm still scared. i've gone to the restroom since then and nothing. i'm hoping it was nothing...now i don't have a dr. appt until Thursday--should i call my dr? i don't know what to do right now. and it doesnt make it any better that they found a "warm antibody" in my blood work and are referring me to a high risk dr. but the nurse couldn't tell me what it was or meant. her exact words were "i have no idea" - not very comforting. anyone can help???

Q&A: Spotting during the 1st trimester?

I didn't take a pregnancy test until I was 6 weeks pregnant. I was spotting irregularly right up until I took the test, so I didn't even consider that we were pregnant. When I had my first scan at 7 weeks, the doctor put me on bed rest for a week due to the traces of brown blood she found. She put me on Utrogest (Progesterone) and magnesium 3 x's a day. Since going back to work, I've had heavy brown spotting twice. Each time I scheduled to see my doctor immediately, and she put me back on bed rest. This time, at 12 weeks, I'm out for 2 weeks and back on the same meds. The irony was as I was totally panicking waiting to see the doctor, the scan showed the baby's first movements. It was like he/she was jumping up and down despite my worst Angst. Bed rest is really hard to deal with, but just resting and cutting back on what I do as a grade 2 teacher hasn't been enough to keep me relaxed and stressed-free. We've already lost 3 pregnancies, so we're being extra careful, hoping that everything will work out.

Q&A: Spotting during the 1st trimester?

I am in my second trimester, pregnant with twins and at 15 weeks I had bright red blood with clots. (enough to turn the toilet water red). I was terrified. I was sent to the ER and told if it was a miscarrage they could not do anything. Luckily the babies were fine. I rested for 2 days and was told not to have sex for a week. The bleeding stopped that night. 7 days later a repeat ultrasound was fine and the perinatologist cleared me. I had sex that night and 24 hours later I was spotting(brownish- old blood) only on the tiolet tissue. I saw the OB today (I am in the rotation of Doctors process) and he said no more sex. He seemed annoyed that I asked about the spotting and having sex and annoyed that the perinatologist said it was ok. I was told that it was from having a friable cervix. I started to cry. His response was what are you crying for. I am praying that this guy is not on call the day I deliver.

Q&A: Spotting during the 1st trimester?

I am 8w1d and I have been spotting since I was about 5w. Its only brownish blood and barely anything in my underwear. I haven't had a doctors appt yet but when I have called, they said its ok as long as im not filling up a pad. I have mild cramping some days but nothing serious. Its a little scary but I don't want to worry... has anyone else experienced this?

Q&A: Spotting during the 1st trimester?

I am 7w today. Last night, I thought I saw a little bit of light pink blood when I wiped, but it was so faint, so I shrugged it off. This morning, it's worse. It's still light pink, but it was definitely there and there was more of it. I had cramping for two nights last week and they went away and I had no blood. Now I'm bleeding. I miscarried 4 months ago...I am super freaked out that this is happening to us again. I can't take another loss. On top of all that...I haven't had a first OBGYN visit yet...for either pregnancy! I miscarried at week 8 on my last one; and the Army hospital had my first appt. out at week 10. I just got the authorization for my Army doctor this morning; and it takes a month to get an appointment. I HATE THIS!

Q&A: Spotting during the 1st trimester?

I am 8w today, and had spotted a very little bit in my first couple of weeks. Then on Monday, I started bleeding suddenly and more heavily. I freaked out and called the doctor (I had already had my first appt. a week earlier) and they did blood tests and I went in the next day to be checked. My hcg levels were fine, and when they did the US, the baby's heart was beating away! He said that I had a placental lake, but there was nothing to worry about. He did tell me to stay off of my feet as much as possible, and to stay out of work for a couple of days. Good luck to everyone. I know it's very scary.

Q&A: Spotting during the 1st trimester?

@ amandabrown3: I just read your post today and was wondering how you made out? I am 7w and I have been spotting every day for 2 weeks...brownish and just enough that I need a pantyliner. I called my doctor and she said not to worry, but my first appointment isn't for another 11 days and it's hard not to be nervous. I read so many posts about spotting being normal and then so many where something was wrong, so I don't know what to think or feel...

Q&A: Spotting during the 1st trimester?

Spotting does not automatically indicate a miscarriage. I am 9 weeks 4 days and have been spotting (mostly brown, some light pink) for 25 days now. I went in to the OB shortly after it started and the ultrasound showed a subchorionic hematoma. It's small and should heal itself over time. I know it can be really scary to see blood but try not to think worse case right away. Your body doesn't need the extra stress! If you are really worried and can't stop thinking about it, call your doctor's office and speak to someone.

Q&A: Spotting during the 1st trimester?

I am 5w4d and just experienced some spotting - nothing I would describe as a period - more like reddish/browinsh along with discharge - a little less than an inch marking in my underwear. This is after a day of babysitting so lifting a 20lb child as well as teaching creative movement class to preschoolers. I called my mom in tears and her advice was not to worry, to lay down, pamper myself, stay positive, and take the next few days off. She researched a bit for me and apparently it's very very common and unless you have persistent heavy bleeding and/or cramping and back pain it's most likely nothing at all - just blood from implantation or from having sex. For tonight I am just relaxing and trying not to worry (very challenging as I already lay in bed crying for an hour holding my belly). Reality is no mom to be is going to act mellow about this supposedly "common" thing. Glad to see lots of others are having this situation which is comforting. Planning to call my doctor in the morning.

Q&A: Spotting during the 1st trimester?

I'm 6 weeks pregnant right now, and I experienced some bleeding / cramping earlier this week and (like the rest of you) freaked out. I guess I've always heard about "spotting," but I definitely didn't expect spotting to be quite as much as it was and for the cramping to be as uncomfortable. My doc told me brownish blood is completely normal and so is the cramping. He said this is super common. I can't tell you all how much better I'm feeling now that I've talked about this with him - if you're nervous, don't hesitate to call your doc.

Q&A: Spotting during the 1st trimester?

I'm 5 weeks, 3 days right now. I've had some spotting for the past 4 days. The first day, it was bright red and since then, it's just been a pinkish color whenever I go to the bathroom. Everything looks fine, as far as the initial ultrasound and blood work went. I have an appt. on Thursday for another ultrasound to see if we can see the heartbeat. I think I'll breathe easier once I see the baby on the screen. Or at least the heartbeat.

Q&A: Spotting during the 1st trimester?

Based on my inconsistent periods, I am either 5wks2d or 6wks2d? My first appt is not until Aug 12th. I had a tiny bit of spotting last Monday night and Tuesday but then nothing. I saw another tiny bit of brown when I wiped last night and again this morning. I called my drs office and the nurse told me that this is normal. She said that Brown is good because that means it's old blood. She told me that my Husband and I should abstain from intercourse. I just hope that everything is okay. I think I'll be a nervous wreck until I go for my first drs visit next week.

Q&A: Spotting during the 1st trimester?

They can't even tell me how far along I am. I have endometriosis and also often ovulate twice per cycle. Last month I ovulated twice and about a week apart. I am pregnant but they have no idea how far along I am to tell if my hcg is low or high and I was spotting for a week. I also had a period since I last ovulated but before my positive test. It's so confusing and none of my friends are being very supportive. All I know is yes spotting is normal but it can also mean a possible miscarriage. So I'm trying to prepare for the worst while hoping for the best. I have to wait two weeks before I can find anything else out.
