Metallic Taste During Pregnancy?

Why do I have a metallic taste in my mouth?

Pregnancy has some pretty weird side effects. No one knows exactly why some moms-to-be experience that funny metallic taste that won’t go away -- or why some women don’t. It happens commonly enough that doctors have a name for it: dysgeusia. For some, dysgeusia starts very early in pregnancy, says Debra Goldman, MD, ob-gyn at Women & Infants Hospital of Rhode Island. You may have noticed it before you even knew you were pregnant.

Most physicians think the metallic taste is somehow related to pregnancy hormones (kind of like most pregnancy symptoms, right?), especially the high level of estrogen in your body during pregnancy. The good news is that tasting metal usually fades away as pregnancy progresses, the same way morning sickness usually goes away. Until then, eat acidic foods, such as citrus fruits and pickles. The acidity tends to cut the metallic taste.
