Q&A: Hair issues during pregnancy?

I heard pregnancy makes your hair thick and lustrous but mine is insanely frizzy all of a sudden. Help!

Re: I heard pregnancy makes your hair thick and lustrous but mine is insanely frizzy all of a sudden. Help!

The Bump Expert

Sorry… for some women, “thick and lustrous” is no more than a myth. Hormones (yep, blame them for this one, too) hit every head differently. The lucky ones wind up thick and full; others, limp and thin. And sometimes, hair just starts to seem a little… different. Dry hair might turn oily, curls might straighten, and a perm or a dye might produce totally unexpected results. One bonus for the limp and thin: Hormones can also cause hair to sprout in less exciting places (think face, belly, back and legs)… making that thick hair a little less attractive.

Though you can’t change your hormones, there are a few ways to promote luscious, healthy locks. Start with a nutritious diet. Yogurt, fresh fruits and veggies, seeds, whole grains and cold pressed oils are especially good for hair. Dry, brittle hair that falls out easily or lightens in color might be a sign of iron, iodine or protein deficiencies. If your hair is undernourished, take five minutes every day to massage your scalp, which stimulates circulation. Home oil treatments are another great way to fight frizz. Massage half a cup of warm vegetable or olive oil into your scalp and hair, and let it soak under a shower cap for half an hour or so. Add a few drops of lavender or rose essential oils to the treatment for some aromatherapy.

Q&A: Hair issues during pregnancy?

my hair has been falling out- not horribly, but more than a pre-pregnancy brushing might have removed... is this something to be concerned about?

Annie4581 |

Q&A: Hair issues during pregnancy?

i am in desperate need of a hair salon. my hair is not what it was before becoming pregnant. i think all of the diet, sleep and body adjustments affect the hair as well. i am eager for things to get back on track.

Q&A: Hair issues during pregnancy?

my hair has been thicker, and growing a lot faster since i became pregnant. I think it is mostly because it doesn't seem like any is falling out! in only lose about 2-4 strands of hair when i shower which is significantly less than pre-pregnancy. It isn't that great though, because my hair was already think, and now it is so hard to manage.

My hair has been falling out, too. My boyfriend even noticed it, but even though it has, I've straightened it recently and it looked full of body. It looked great.

Q&A: Hair issues during pregnancy?

I have these 3-4 little hairs on my chin that weren't that big of a deal. I plucked them put every 3-4 weeks. Now I am having to pluck them out like ONCE a week! And my hair in "other" areas is growing just as fast. I only hope that this applies to my head too!

Q&A: Hair issues during pregnancy?

so, hopefully no one read this that I know personally, but I have "happy trail" that is horribly horribly embarrassing. I actually managed to keep it under wraps because my hair didn't grow very fast, but now, shaving is quick and intense, and when i am too tired or sick to shave,i am much more modest than before pregnancy. Unfortunately this hair growth has stayed away from my head, and gone to everywhere but!

i heard that boys make your hair full and shiny and girls "steel your beauty" making your hair flat and dull and making you feel blah... but im not to sure if thats true..lemme know what you find out i dont know what im having so i couldent tell you

newmommie01 |

Q&A: Hair issues during pregnancy?

all pregnancies are different with my boys it grew like no other but it was really frizzy and i could do nothing with it except for keep it put up with my daughter i barely had to shave my legs my hair never grew now i am on my fourth pregnancy and my hair is doing the same as when i was pregnant with my daughter... but yes all pregnancies are different some make you not grow hair and some you will but have the frizz and some have the beautiful growth and with no frizz just all depends on your horomones and sometimes what prenatal you take

I am so glad to hear someone else has hair issues. Mine seems drier and frizzier lately and everyone else I ask tell me no hair issues or that it got thicker. Pregnancy Ticker

lurod1072 |

Q&A: Hair issues during pregnancy?

I understand that hair changes are very common during pregnancy. Mine has DEFINITELY changed. My "normal" mane is straight with a slight bend in it, so when I blow dry it (even without brushing) it straightens out. Since being pregnant, it wants to be wavy all the time. I tried blow drying it as usual... but NOPE- it wants to curl! It's the oddest thing because I have always had straight hair. My advice to everyone who has new (and sometimes unwanted) locks... WORK IT, LAIDES! :) That's right- play with hair products and figure out how to best style it as it is now. Have fun with it if you can. I tell ya what- I found the right products and doing my hair curly is much easier than it ever was to blow-dry/curl it.

LMScherr |

Q&A: Hair issues during pregnancy?

my hair is soft wavy and thick

chynaandhoody |

Q&A: Hair issues during pregnancy?

I agree with you LMScheerr. I'm a hairstylist and have heard every problem in the book when it comes to hair and pregnancy. I'd recommend for you to go in and see your stylist and see what she/he can recommend for you and your hair during this time. As much as you might not want wave/ extra hair/whatever it is that you're experiencing, they should be able to find a way for you to work with and even embrase the changes that your hair is going through at this point in time. Could be through a fun new cut, colour, or even a change in the styling products or shampoo/conditioner that you use can do the trick. Why work against your hair??? we all know it has a mind of it's own. Work with it and things will be so much easier! Good luck! Wishing you all happy, healthy hair!

Q&A: Hair issues during pregnancy?

To newmommie01: It is not true. Because my first baby was a girl and my hair looked so nice and full, not falling out, and grew long while I was pregnant with her. This time I am supposed to be having a boy and my hair does not look nearly as nice. But it started out in worse shape this time too. And for those of you who didn't want the extra hair you got during pregnancy, don't worry. It will fall out after you have the baby. Then what you'll be tired of is vacuuming it up and it getting stuck in the vacuum if it's really long hair. I think really good pre-natal vitamins help, though when pregnancy makes your hair look bad. This time that was the case, and when I started taking the pre-natal vitamins I really love my hair stopped falling out and started looking better.

jslautrec |

Q&A: Hair issues during pregnancy?

well prenantal vitamins make your hair and nails grow beautifully until about 5 months and then it all goes away . Your naild become brittle and your hair becomes a static electrode.

I have natural thick frizzy hair and I'm pregnant with twins. And what works for me is Frizz Ease shampoo and conditionar and the smooth gel. It works for me and I was my hair every two days. It worked wonders. I hope it works for you.

Q&A: Hair issues during pregnancy?

I am almost 16 weeks and I am nasty hairy! My stomach is this gross black fuzzy hair all over and just keeps getting worse. I do not want to do anything to remove it because I do not want to make it come back worse. I just embrace it.. it's part of the baby (is what I tell myself while reaching for the raxor!)

Lcgurl23 |

Q&A: Hair issues during pregnancy?

When I was pregnant with my daughter my hair was brittle and fell out all the time. I even ended up with a receeding hairline!! I also normally had very straight hair but it became very wavy. And even 4 years later I still have wavy hair. And now its starting to fall out again! (Baby #2??)

liony38 |

Q&A: Hair issues during pregnancy?

Mine is the same

Jamiek18 |

Q&A: Hair issues during pregnancy?

I have the same issue Lcgurl23. My hubby complains because not only do I have hair on my stomach, but he calls he sasquatch, cause I have a layer of thin blond hair that covers my Entire body, besides my head. My hair has gone to my dreaded high school days of instant frizz. This is my second boy, i can't believe things are so much different. With my first son, my hair was shiney and full and I didn't have a single blemish or zit on my face. With this one, I'm covered with zits and my hair is outragous!

SammieBear88 |

Q&A: Hair issues during pregnancy?

Just a little FYI, in case you're interested. You can train your scalp to produce less oil and thus only have to wash your hair every other day. I did it in college and now I'm doing it again in preparation for baby. You save time in the shower and money on hair products. For the fist couple of weeks you can just pull it into a pony on your "no wash" days to hide the yuck.

Q&A: Hair issues during pregnancy?

can pregnancy dry out your scalp? My head is so itchy and dry. I cant stand it. Whats crazy is my forehead is so greasy it looks like a cheeseburger was made on it but my hair is sooooooooo dry!

Everyone would say that during pregnancy your hair gets more full and grows quicker but mine hasn't done any of that haha If anything it stopped growing. It does feel a bit healthier though:)

Q&A: Hair issues during pregnancy?

My hair was falling out in what felt like handfuls with my daughter. I went from having thick nice hair to the most un-manageable hair ever. It stopped falling out by the time my daughter was 6 months old. At that point i went to get highlites and my hair dresser could see that while i was pregnant my hair grew darker then went back to growing light once she was born.

My hair on my head is thick and lovely but I seem to be shedding a LOT more then pre-preggo I am alsogrowing hair in OTHER places not so fun!

miraclemommy2011 |

Q&A: Hair issues during pregnancy?

I have really. really. thick hair. (thank you grandma) it normally is pretty manageable but since becoming pregnant, it feels even thicker yet the ends, just dead and dry. I haven't gotten my hair done in about 8 months so its not from dying it and I dont use harsh products. I use salon shampoo and conditioner made for my hair type and leave in repair treatments. I get it cut regularly. Oh pregnancy you have took a toll on my head. As for my body, oh my lord. Its not surprising why some women don't feel sexy. I barely even bother to shave my legs because it grows back twice as fast. I wont even get started on my girl areas. Growing hair in places that it never grew before. Brazillion you will be my best friend before i go into labor.

Q&A: Hair issues during pregnancy?

My hair is growing, not necessarily thicker and after my first child I went from having stick straight hair to wonderful naturally curly hair. It seems to get curlier every day! I did notice my underarm hair seems to grow rather quickly now (having to shave it 3 times a week instead of just once) and my leg hair isn't growing hardly at all-wish that would stick around.

Q&A: Hair issues during pregnancy?

Reading this makes me feel so lucky. I've always had thin, flat, stringy blonde hair and since I've gotten pregnant it's gotten a lot thicker and very shiney and smooth. I'm only 6 weeks pregnant but I hope the hormones keep my hair like this throughout my pregnancy.

Liz1485 |

Q&A: Hair issues during pregnancy?

A lot of women experience thick and lustrous hair during pregnancy because of their prenatal vitamins! Prenatal vitamins are excellent for hair, skin, and nails, which may be why so many women experience that glow. ;)

Q&A: Hair issues during pregnancy?

I have thin, fine hair, normally shiny and light, but these days, I get up in the morning and hardly recognize my thick coarse head! Even hairspray, water and brushing can't control this overnight fro! I wonder what kind of hair my baby will have =)

Q&A: Hair issues during pregnancy?

My hair started falling out when I stopped taking the pill, about 4 months before I became pregnant. I thought it would stop with pregnancy, but now I am 17 weeks and it's as bad as ever! I had thin hair to begin with, and now I barely have anything left. The hair I do have is dull and breaks easily. It's upsetting but I take comfort that both me & baby are healthy.

My hair seems normal but one of my girlfriends lost tons of hair when she was pregnant. We're talking bald spots! But it all grew back once the baby came out. My problem is chin hair - I feel like the freakin bearded lady! My leg hair hardley grows anymore which is great! I wish I could say the same about my face :-(

Q&A: Hair issues during pregnancy?

The hair on my head has grown alot, but it is also alot thinner than it use to be. It looks a little dry, but not too bad. My leg hairs, and arm pit hairs grow SUPER fast, I'm saying shave in the morning and I get a 5 o'clock shadow at noon. And the lovely hairs that just seem to pop up wherever they please...ugh..I can't wait to have my little man in my arm's and my hormones back to normal!!

RaeRae2424 |

Q&A: Hair issues during pregnancy?

Bver514: my hair also started falling out when I stopped taking the pill. I went to a dermatologist, and all she could do was prescribe a medicated shampoo, which my OBGYN told me NOT to use if I was TTC. I'm now 14 weeks pregnant, and my hair is still getting thinner. I'm just hoping it'll grow back after the baby's born!

Q&A: Hair issues during pregnancy?

EVery pregnancy is 100% different. In the first 15weeks my hair was "blah" n dry n damaged easily. I even tryed dying my hair a light brown (from med brown) n it turned copper orange! I just recently got fed up with having it fall out n the annoying color n went to asalon. I decided to go bold n chop my long hair into a long bob. I looove my hair now. Thr stylist was able to do a oil treatment to help it from frizzing n to stay shiny. N since all the split ends were gone my hair is sooo awesome n full of body..i changed my prenatals n started taking more vitimin d supplament and both have helped alot

Q&A: Hair issues during pregnancy?

My hormones made the hair on my body, like my stomach and legs stick straight out and thick. I asked the dr about it and she said its normal just dont shave it. My fiance loves making fun of my hairy body. I had baby hairs on my face all my life but now they're worse. im italian, and of course we're hairy, but now i feel like a mammoth. But the hair on my head is just limp and straight like always. Sometimes its hard to fix. It doesnt want to do anything. I bought the new fructis (spelling?) 92% bio-degradable shampoo & conditioner and i think it makes my hair really nice. Its healthier and Its really light on my hair. Just dont use too much conditioner because it made my hair look dirty

Q&A: Hair issues during pregnancy?

Not really an answer but a story. My hair grew so long with my first pregnancy so I went and cut it and then found out I was pregnant again and then nothing. I don't think my hair even budged. Third time around, it still hasn't grown. So, guess pregnancy doesn't mean nice hair.....GRRRRRRRRRRRRRR!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

My hair has been fantastic during pregnancy. Usually it is very oily and it needs a wash by the end of the day. Now my normally thick, full hair has tons of volume (like the kind you would pay big money for). Feeling very lucky. However, now that I'm nearing the very end of the pregnancy my hair is going back to "normal" yuck!!!

My hair was already thick and grew really fast pre-pregnancy I'm 5months now and it's grown insanely thicker and longer. I have no idea what to do with it. It's just way too much hair and it looks like I'm wearing a helmet. So for me thicker hair is a curse.

I always know when I am pregnant ( and I am with my third child now ) when my hair starts falling out in pretty significant clumps. I have fairly thick hair, and it always restores itself after pregnancy, but enough that the first time I was pregnant, it scared me! I did get my hair cut super short for this baby, though. I had long hair, and all I was doing was putting it into a ponytail. :) Pinterest has some pretty good hair ideas if you're on that site. Thats where i got the idea for my current cut!

My hair had become pretty greasy no matter how many times I changed my shampoos and changed up the amount of times I washed my hair. It never went away! I noticed that my belly fuzz has increased a little and darker. I am the kind of girl that likes to shave down there, i just feel cleaner that way and now since I was 6 months pregnant (now in my 39th week) it has been sooo difficult to shave down there because of my belly and even my legs is a work out to reach haha.

To maintain your natural beauty you should have a daily routine, to use the best make-up products, from usual soap to some expensive foundation cream and also Hair growth vitamins and to keep in shape your body. It doesn't matter if you are pregnant or not. Also you have to take care of your mind, so reading a book is necessary.

Q&A: Hair issues during pregnancy?

Sometimes pregnant women can experience a ‘softening’ of their facial features. As a result, you might find that your usual hairstyle doesn’t suit you as much as usual. At Catering Bandung we are experienced in creating hairstyles to suit different face shapes, so come and talk to us if you want a change.
