Q&A: Emotions during pregnancy?

I'm pregnant with my first baby, and I'm super emotional! I know that being hormonal is part of pregnancy, but how do I know what's normal and what isn't?

Re: I'm pregnant with my first baby, and I'm super emotional! I know that being hormonal is part of pregnancy, but how do I know what's normal and what isn't?

The Bump Expert

Every pregnancy is different, but you're right that (unfortunately) being emotional is often a big part of pregnancy. Your body is going through some pretty crazy changes, and it can be especially trying during the first trimester when you're just getting used to the transformation.

While mood swings during pregnancy can be traced to everything from fatigue, physical stress and metabolic changes, the main culprit is your hormones. During the first few months after conception, the levels of hormones like estrogen and progesterone change dramatically, which has significant effect on brain chemistry. So if you find yourself spontaneously bursting into tears or breaking into a laughing fit, don't worry -- you're pregnant, not crazy.

For most women, the moodiness is most noticeable in the first few months of pregnancy and the last weeks leading up to delivery. If yours seem extreme or are affecting your way of life, talk with your doc. She'll be able to guide you towards further care.

Thank you for that advice. I thought I was crazy for crying for no reason!

I really thought I was going crazy until I read these Q &A's..... gooosh you guys can sure make a first "timer" feel normal.... (tears) THANKS!!!

re: Q: Normal emotions?

I got upset with my husband for something silly and before I knew it I was yelling about it. Once I registered the look in his face, I realized how I was acting and felt so bad about it, I started crying. He did not know what to do! You are definitely NOT alone!

re: Q: Normal emotions?

I totally cried for an hour last night... no real reason behind it. Just all of a sudden overwhelmed by being happy, scared, thrilled, etc. Ours is a "honeymoon baby" -- I definitely wasn't expecting to EXPECT already! My hubby was great, telling me he has the same excitement, happiness, scared-ness, too. Pretty sure it won't be the last crying jag I have! I kind of feel on the brink of it a lot this past week.

Q&A: Emotions during pregnancy?

Ha ha, my first two pregnancies were pretty smooth, this one however is not. I am a you know what, I get irritated so easily and I cry about the dumbest things, and I'm not one to really cry. I cry because I'm tired, or forget things, or because my fiance works alot and I want him to stay home with me, or I don't feel well, or even for no apparent reason at all. I feel bad for him because I must be stressing or overwhelming for him right now, if I am he's not showing it or letting me know, bless his heart.

Q&A: Emotions during pregnancy?

Oh yeah, what's really bad is that my fiance and I were being intamate and for no reason in the middle of it I started laughing. I felt so bad and embarrassed, we had to stop because I could not stop laughing. Thankfully he thought it was funny and laughed about it (or should I say me).

Q&A: Emotions during pregnancy?

Oh wow are you serious? Crying at random commercials, the cats looking cute, a picutre of a baby smiling or just for no reason is a pregnancy symptom?!?! We have been TTC for about 5 months now and about three to five days ago I started crying at random. Its not like me at all. I normally only get angry but right now I'm constantly happy or crying non-stop. Could it be pregnancy?!?!

Q&A: Emotions during pregnancy?

My first pregnancy I cried all the time. Anything could set me off. This time around im not quiet so bad, but today I just started crying for no reason. Also one time when I was pregnant the first time my husband was sleeping and I really wanted to throw something at his head. And he did nothing wrong.

Q&A: Emotions during pregnancy?

I was so glad to read that it's normal the last weeks up to delivery. I wasn't very emotional during up unitl now (33 weeks) and I find myself crying all the time. I thought I was going crazy because I thought if I was going to be emotional it would have happened already(I was really emotional the entirity of my first pregnancy) and then BOOM the last two days have been rough!

Q&A: Emotions during pregnancy?

Q&A: Emotions during pregnancy?

Also glad I am not alone. My hubby and I coach softball and the other day at practice I went from being happy and supportive to wanting to yell at all of the kids! And then later on I felt bad and just wanted to cry! It is better now that I realize what is going on!

Q&A: Emotions during pregnancy?

Crying has not been an issue for me! I've just been mad at the world the last few months. The only time I've cried is from just being mad! Most of the men at work have learned to just tread lightly around me! (not that I'm complaining!) HAHA

Q&A: Emotions during pregnancy?

I was making my fiance's family dinner, cut my finger on a can and needed stitches because I was bleeding everywhere. I didn't cry about cutting my finger, I cried literally 4 hours about how I ruined dinner and bled on the chicken parm. I missed my period, so we did a pregnancy test later that day, found out I'm pregnant with our Son. Then I bawled about that. Then another time, I had a dream my fiance yelled at me, I woke up and yelled at him for yelling at me in a dream.

Q&A: Emotions during pregnancy?

Cried for an hour last night. Sobbed. Over not making it to Panda Express for green bean chicken before they closed. Then I took a shower...and was fine. Don't even want that green bean chicken now.

Q&A: Emotions during pregnancy?

Being emotional is not new to me, I cry at things all the time but they are typically for understandable reasons. I am 6 weeks pregnant and I have cried over things such as my dog looking at me while I was eating or over going to a restaurant and the food not sounding good once I ordered it. Luckily I have a very supportive husband that knows that all my craziness is mostly due to the pregnancy. I am just ready to feel like myself again!

Q&A: Emotions during pregnancy?

I'm 6 weeks.. last Friday I had to pack for a mini trip. Well my husband asked to pack his things. Clothes, Golf clubs, shoes, etc. Well he asked for his golf fleece. I searched up and down the house for this fleece swearter. No where to be found. I felt overwhelmed because I had to search through a pile of clothes on the sofa. I cried because there were to many towels on the couch. Long story short.. my husband had his fleece with him.

Q&A: Emotions during pregnancy?

I am about 8 weeks pregnant and I feel like I don't have any control over my body. Sometimes I feel possessed. I can't control my outbursts of tears or yelling. I know this isn't normal and I can't wait until I'm out of my first trimester so I can start feeling like me again.

Q&A: Emotions during pregnancy?

My emotions seem to be on a roller coaster. I am almost 5 weeks and I am irritated in the morning and really moopy during the day. I am a big stresser so I am also trying to crub my worrisome nature to not stress the baby out. Seems like I cry over little things too. It's also hard because we haven't really told anyone so I have to keep a lot of my emotions to myself! Blah!

Q&A: Emotions during pregnancy?

This is my husband and I's second child. When I was pregnant with my daughter, I can't ever recall a time where I was emotional. However, this time I find myself constantly fighting back the tears and just a feeling of being overwhelmed and I am only 6 wks, 3 days in! Hopefully this won't last too much longer or I don't know what I will do!

Q&A: Emotions during pregnancy?

I am 7 weeks pregnant, and I have been crying and crying! One of the first things that made us think I might be pregnant was because I was trying to DVR something and it didn't catch the full movie. I cried and cried and cried over that. Haha! It wasn't even something I cared that much about! I've cried because my husband is going somewhere, I've cried because people get on my nerves, I've cried about a lot of things. I also yelled at my sister on Christmas and yelled at my husband to "Stop talking to me!" So yeah...its all normal! I guess that's good, but I'll be glad when I'm a little more normal again : )

Q&A: Emotions during pregnancy?

I'm glad I'm not the only one! I am an absolute wreck. My temper tends to be real short and then I can cry over nothing. I once woke up and saw that Maury Povich was on TV just as he was announcing that some poor guy was "NOT" the father. Good lord, I sobbed. That is when I officially knew that I was a hormonal mess. HA HA!!!!!
