Q&A: Can I be pregnant and get my period?

Is it possible to be pregnant and still get my period?

Re: Is it possible to be pregnant and still get my period?

The Bump Expert

Nope. Once you’re pregnant, your body starts creating a hormone called hCG, which puts a stop to your cycle. You still may experience bleeding, though -- about 20 to 30 percent of women do during early pregnancy. Some common causes are implantation bleeding (light spotting that happens 6 to 12 days after conception and lasts anywhere from a few hours to a few days), pelvic or urinary tract infections, and sex.

Now, don’t freak out (always save the meltdown for after a call and visit with your doctor), but there are also some more serious reasons for bleeding. These include ectopic or tubal pregnancy, molar pregnancy, placenta previa, preterm labor and, yes, miscarriage.

If you do experience bleeding, wear a pad so you can keep track of the amount and type of bleeding for your doctor. Even if it turns out to be nothing serious, a call to your doctor is always a good idea.

Q&A: Can I be pregnant and get my period?

My husband and I are TTC also, and my period was a week late. Well I took a pregnancy test and it said negative, but I did just start my period and it doesn't quite feel like my normal period. There was barely any spotting the first 2 days and I have not had any cramps at all. Is this normal or is it all in my head.

Q&A: Can I be pregnant and get my period?

I was about a week late when my period (or so I thought) started very lightly. That was 3 days ago and it never really took course - sometimes there's a tiny bit of bleeding but certainly no where near my normal period. I took a pregnancy test today and it is positive. Is this normal? Am I (and baby) ok? I'd love to hear from someone - I'm really freaked out about this.

Q&A: Can I be pregnant and get my period?

I was about a week late last month and period was nothing like it normally is - very light, no cramping, and just didn't feel right. Didn't think to take another test since I took one before my period and it was negative, but now this month I am late again - thought I was just crazy until hearing that I'm not the only one dealing with this - may have to take another test.

Q&A: Can I be pregnant and get my period?

I am 7 weeks and I have had bleeding and cramping (just like a period) for five days. I went to the ER and they found a heartbeat and said everything looks great. The bleeding is pretty heavy but they say not to worry. I think this is more common then most people think.

Q&A: Can I be pregnant and get my period?

I was 5 weeks pregnant last week, according to LMP. I took 3 at home pee tests, and even got blood work confirming I was pregnant. Then Thursday, 4 days ago, I started bleeding A LOT, like a regular period, cramps and all. I went to the ER and they treated me like a fool. They took urine from me and that was it. They said it was negative, didn't do an ultrasound or any other procedure. They didn't even take more blood from me. Know I am torn up because not only have I been told that I lost my baby, but I really don't know 100%. I have heard of women having periods throughout their pregnancy, though it is rare. My aunt told me she had 3 periods before she found out she was preggo. Is it possible the urine was wrong? Should they have taken blood? Am I just holding on to a baby that I can never get back? :( I am so sad, and I really feel like I was not treated fairly at all, and I am left with so many questions. Can anyone help me?

Q&A: Can I be pregnant and get my period?

RE:nicolettecmoore- I myself when preggo with my 1st child woke up one morning bleeding and cramping while I was into my pregnancy, went to the dr.s office and they never could give an explanation but confirmed that everything was fine. I would suggest that you go to your OBGYN and let them check you out, that is the only way to be sure. The ER just pushes people through somtimes and you need a definate answers.

Q&A: Can I be pregnant and get my period?

RE:nicolettecmoore: I finally got the positive my husband and I had been trying for a year to get. I took two home test and they said positive. The next day I went to my GYN and she did a blood test and confirm I was pregnant but my hcG levels were low (like a 12) she thought I was about 5 weeks pregnant as well. Three days later I woke up to bleeding and cramping. I went to see my GYN again and she did another blood test but this time it came back negative. She called it not a miscarriage but a Chemical pregnant. She said it is more common then those think it is and some women do not even know their pregnant and think they are just having a regular period. The web has more information about Chemical pregnancy but basically the baby does not implant into the Uterus but just passes through. Its been almost a year and we still are trying to get pregnant. Hope this help ease you mind about what happen and how one day your pregnant and a few days later your not. When I was younger this happen to me with the ER and I thought I was just crazy and imagine I was pregnant and the home test were wrong (at that time I never went to confirm with the doctor) it was not until years later when this happen again that I realized I was pregnant then too but the ER doctors do not tell women about Chemical pregnancy. Good luck!

Q&A: Can I be pregnant and get my period?

A woman's period = menstruation. No women can menstruate while she is pregnant. This is because menstruation is when she sheds the lining of her uterus, or the endometrium. If she is not shedding the endometrium, then she do not have her period. She is just bleeding. Which is common, 20-30% of women bleed in early pregnancy! Cramping is also very normal. The point is, a woman could bleed as if she had her period every day, and would still not be menstruating because the fluid is not composed of her endometrium. In pregnancy, the blood is from her cervix, not from the lining of the uterus.

Q&A: Can I be pregnant and get my period?

This is so helpful! My cousin had her period for 3 months before she found out she was pregnant. It's so crazy how the body works! I am actually going to the doctor tomorrow because I have been experiencing light cramping and nausea for 2 weeks now. Keep our fingers crossed :)

Q&A: Can I be pregnant and get my period?

I think it would be more accurate to say that except in unusual circumstances, a woman will not have menstruation during her pregnancy, but it is sometimes possible for bleeding to make it look that way. I have heard many stories of women who have had "regular" bleeding that made it look like a regular period but went on to deliver normal, healthy babies. Obviously, any bleeding should be reported to the doctor, especially by those who think they might be pregnant. Also, I don't think normal menstruation, while extremely unlikely, can be completely ruled out, because I've certainly heard of some extremely rare instances where women had two babies (not twins) at different stages of development, and got pregnant with one a month or even two after the first.

Q&A: Can I be pregnant and get my period?

I just recently found out I am pregnant. I had a light/medium period that lasted three days (My normal is 5 days). But two urine test & blood test said I was pregnant! Which explained the tiredness, nausea, & gagging while brushing my teeth. I never had these symptoms with my first child. Going in Thursday to get an ultrasound to see for sure how far I am. Keep fingers crossed! (They are thinking I'm going on 6 weeks)

Q&A: Can I be pregnant and get my period?

I went off birthcontrol late Feb. during the middle of my cycle to TTC. I started, then tried in the month of March. I had a "period" then and then tried again in April. Had a "period" but both times the bleeding was very weird. Brown for 3 days, red for 2 then pink for 1 or 2 more after that. I just figured it was the lack of hormones. I just didnt feel right, I thought I had a stomach virus due to the nausea and some kids in the house had one. I peed on a stick.. (a few after the first came up positive) and sure enough, I was already 6 weeks pregnant. So yes, you can bleed LIKE a period, but its not from your menstral cycle restarting. hope this helped!!
