My gums are so sore and I’m bleeding a lot when I brush my teeth. Is this related to my pregnancy? And what should I do about it?

The Bump Expert

From swollen boobs to swollen gums, rising hormone levels leave no stone unturned. During your second trimester, your gums may become tender, swollen and unusually sensitive. This tenderness is normal, but if your gums become bright red, extremely sore and bleed very easily, talk to your doctor or dentist -- you might have pregnancy gingivitis. Left untreated, it can become a more serious condition called periodontitis, linked to premature and low-birthweight babies.

So what can you do? Follow that same simple regimen you've heard the dentist recommend since childhood: Brush and floss at least twice a day. Avoid sweets, especially chewy ones, and up your calcium and Vitamin C intake. Switch to a softer brush, and keep bacteria away by brushing your tongue every day. It’s also a good idea to pay a visit to your dentist during pregnancy -- just make sure to mention your condition and avoid X-ray exposure. And, don't worry... your gums should return to normal soon after delivery.

re: Q: Swollen, bleeding gums?

In the answer above it says that this happens in the second trimester. I am only about 5 weeks and I am having this problem. It started a couple days ago. By any chance will this go away before I deliver or will this stick around throughout the pregnancy?

It'll happened all throughout the pregnancy, it's a type of pregnancy gingivitus. I got it the first couple week of pregnancy but i changed my toothbrush (just to have a new one) and started brushing my gums everyday and they stopped bleeding.

My gum problems started at about 9weeks I'm 15 weeks today and I'm finally starting to get some relief. I brushed and flossed after every meal even though it was extremely painful and I rinsed with Listerene Twice a day... which helped alot I also increased my calcium intake. I bought calcium chews and I let them dissolve in my mouth twice a day

Q&A: Are swollen, bleeding gums a pregnancy symptom?

All my life I have had red gums. I brush and floss and rinse my mouth like I am suppose to do. My gums are so sensitive that I bleed when I floss or brush to hard. Cause of that I have to rinse my mouth out with salty warm water. My dentist never seems to be concerned with my gums. They just tell me I have to brush extra good and extra floss to prevent gingivitis. These dentists of mine say that to my face but I see them on there lunch break everyday puffing on cigeretes and cigars. Ever since I came out pregnant, I been brushing extra careful, flossing carefully and doing everything I am suppose to. So when my doctor noticed how red my gums have been, he advised me to call my dentist to do a cleaning. To prevent low weight of the baby. So I called the dentist and they told me they couldn't do a cleaning on me because of how pregnant I am. They fear something will get in my blood stream and affect the baby. When I told my doctor that he was just puzzled and amazed that they would do that. So he advised me to brush extra good. Floss and use listerine. I'm currently 15 weeks. I want to know am I ok with brushing, flossing, and rinsing with listerine even though my dentist turned me down or should I consult another dentist. And is my baby going to be ok? It's really worrying me and I am trying not to stress about it. This little one loves to play hide in go peek when I try and feel for him or her. But hubby and I been reading to little fella every night. Dr Seuss that is. : )

Q&A: Are swollen, bleeding gums a pregnancy symptom?

CountryLatina209, I was about 4 weeks preg when I went in for my 6 month cleaning and there was no issue w/my dentist and being preg. The only thing they couldn't do was take x-rays of my teeth, which I was due for. I have my next cleaning scheduled for June which is about a month before I am due. I would recommend getting another dentist and 2nd opinion. I would try 1800 dentists and see who there is in your area. I myself need to up my flossing, and that's always been a problem w/me even before I was preg. NO dentist should ever turn u down for a cleaning while being preg. Hope this helps you out.

Q&A: Are swollen, bleeding gums a pregnancy symptom?

I have kept reading reviews on dentists taking care of teeth whitening lansing treatments and I have realized on thing. Unlike almost a decade ago, the market has become utterly competitive and you can hardly find dentists not to fulfill your needs in terms of dental care. This is a great thing, it means you can go wrong on choosing your doctor.
