Cravings During Pregnancy

What's up with those urges to eat certain (and sometimes weird) foods during pregnancy? Check out what's probably causing them and whether or not you should be concerned.

What are cravings during pregnancy?

That urge that you want some specific food -- stat!

What could be causing my cravings during pregnancy?

Studies show that about 90 percent of expecting women have cravings, particularly in the first trimester. Experts aren’t sure why, but one theory is that your body is simply asking for what it needs. The boost in blood volume increases your need for sodium -- hence, you crave pickles. Why the sudden change in food preferences? Blame it on raging hormones, which are messing with your senses of taste and smell. Hunger, restlessness and difficult emotions can intensify cravings, so make sure to eat breakfast, exercise regularly and ask for support when you need it.

When should I go to the doctor with my cravings during pregnancy?

If you’re craving stuff that’s not food, like dirt, charcoal or laundry starch, you might have a condition called pica. It’s important to seek medical attention for pica cravings because they could mean you’re deficient in certain nutrients, and because they can be hard to resist -- and actually eating some nonfood stuff could be dangerous.

What should I do to treat my cravings during pregnancy?

Moderate indulgence is fine (and totally inevitable), but watch your intake of empty calories -- especially if they start to replace important nutrients. Here are some healthy alternatives to common junk-food cravings.

Instead of ice cream
Try sorbet, popsicles, low-fat fro-yo

Instead of doughnuts, pastries
Try whole-grain toast with jam

Instead of cookies, cake, pie
Try angel food cake; graham crackers and peanut butter; low-fat banana, zucchini or pumpkin bread; oatmeal with brown sugar and cinnamon; low-fat pudding

Instead of candy
Try trail mix

Instead of chocolate
Try low-fat chocolate milk, low-sugar hot cocoa

Instead of chips
Try popcorn (air-popped or light microwave), pretzels, whole-grain cereal

All my life I've hated eggs...and the day I found out I was pregnant, I had a strange craving for an omelet. I cooked one and LOVED it! Ive been craving them ever since

by mizzcoco

I crave the most random things at the most random times. The other night I wanted Sour Patch Kids. Toast. McDonald's fries w/ ketchup (which I never eat together). Gravy fries. And when I crave these things, I HAVE to have them. Nothing else will do. DH is getting frustrated. Haha.

I cannot eat enough raisins...or eat the fast enough

by BethanyNC97

I have been craving anything green- kale, salad, canned green beans, peas - I can't get enough!

by chulch111

So far i havent had any real crazy cravings but I have been choosing saltier food and salt to my food that I usually didnt. I just hope that I start hating a food that I love! :)

i love and have been craving things like m&ms and graham crackers?

by shamikaallen2012

I'm lucky in terms of not really having any type of morning/night sickness at all, but I have to eat right when I'm hungry and not wait that long. I have food aversion -- the stuff I used to love, I can't stand right now, namely, wine, coffee, eggs, and bacon. I do miss them, but maybe baby doesn't want them! I am loving bananas, oatmeal and cereal right now.

I love fresh tomatoe slices with salt and vinager chips crumbs on top... it adds the saltiness to the tomatoe and the acid in the tomatoe and vinager balance eachother out... SOOOOO DELICIOUS... as i eat some :)

When I was pregnant with my daughter I craved nothing but zucchini. Everything else made me not just ill but violently ill.. I swear I was possesed. I lost 40ish pounds and I swear food never tasted so good as it did after I gave birth. She was perfect, I was skinny, and then packed on 50 lbs because I LOVED the taste of food after she was born. Pregnant with number 2 now and cravings have been much milder and I can eat. (Not alot, but I can actually eat). I crave things like a small glass of cranberry or grapefruit juice, a banana, or, this morning, a veggie omlet.

Pineapples and hamburgers. I ate a whole pineapple in a day and couldn't get enough hamburgers.

by ropin1

Im a vegetarian but for the past two weeks i keep craving bacon...i havent eaten any except for the morning star farms type but its soo incredibly odd. the thought of eating meat makes me feel ill but i still crave bacon? its hard to explain....i dont really even understand it. other than that though, i crave oatmeal and cinnamon. i put it on everything

I don't know why, but I'm craving chili cheese dogs and hot wings!!! SO not healthy. I can't keep any vegetables down, so I'm worried about that.

by skittlesj526

same here with the greens. and red meat, which i hardly ever eat simply because it's expensive. all i want is a ginormous steak salad.

by dboothsummers

Seriously? Wine? Coffee? Why are you TRYING to drink that stuff when you KNOW you're pregnant...? Am I crazy? It's like when my friend, a smoker would be disgusted by smoking when she was pregnant, but would try her hardest to keep the habit up. "Maybe baby doesn't want them?!" REALLY?!?!?! Who would've thought...

by sfrankenstein

I hate to admit it, but before I knew I was pregnant, I craved cheese fries. (And caved a few times ... Yum.) But now, I'm eating a lot of raisins, so I am happier with the craving, by far.

by KacyChicago

Absolutely nothing makes me happier than a peanut butter and stawberry jelly sandwich with dill pickle slices layered in the middle. To me it's heaven!!

by cangrick317

I'm definitely having the eggs craving too! this morning i had two different breakfast tacos, both with cheesy scrambled eggs, one with mild hot sauce and the other with...u guessed it, pickles! lol at first I thought I wasn't really craving it and my brain is just tuned into the stereotype but nope! Sweet relish on my eggs and I was a happy Mama to be :)

by mego1988

I have been craving chinese food like crazy!

by ivybeeps

love this! I've had endless cravings for candy and doughnuts, this helps me find a better alternative!

by ChristianaJewel

the only thing on this list that concerns me is the "lowfat" "low sugar" content. Most things that are labeled as such have fake sugars or aspartame. I was told NOT to eat these as it was not good for you.

by amkiefer

It is soooo embarressing but I crave just straight sauerkraut (sp?) The other night I popped open a can and actually ate a few forkfuls BEFORE I got it into a bowl. YUM!!

by natjay4ever

For some reason, I've been wanting barbeque sauce. I don't care if it's accompanied by chicken nuggets, grilled chicken, ribs, whatever. I would eat the sauce alone. Weirdest thing ever to me.

by SraSanchez

love toast with penut butter, cheese cake, love wings, anything with cheese!!!!
