Q&A: Weight gain during pregnancy?

How much weight should I gain, and at what pace?

Re: How much weight should I gain, and at what pace?

The Bump Expert

If your weight is in the “normal” range (body mass index of 18-25) before you conceive, the American College of Obstetricians and Gynecologists (ACOG) recommends a gain of 25-35 pounds throughout pregnancy. Shoot to add 3-5 pounds during the first trimester and 1-2 pounds a week after. According to ACOG, if you’re underweight at conception, you should gain 28-40 pounds. If you’re overweight, try to keep it to 15-25 pounds. No matter what your starting weight, your goal is to keep the gain as steady as possible. Baby needs a daily supply of nutrients, and those come from the foods you eat. Don’t worry if your weight gain fluctuates a bit from week to week, but contact your doctor if you suddenly gain or lose weight, especially in the third trimester. This can be a sign of preeclampsia.

A sidenote: You might think you’ll have no problem staying within your “gain range,” but don't be surprised at how quickly the pounds can pile on. Listen, pregnancy isn’t an excuse to pig out. It only gives you license to consume an extra 300 calories a day -- the equivalent of a very small bagel, sans cream cheese. But, instead of stressing out about the quantities you consume, focus on eating quality foods and steering clear of junk foods that add bulk without nutrients. (Um, that includes French fries... But you knew that, right?)

Q&A: Weight gain during pregnancy?

I am 17 weeks and have gained 17 lbs! Even though my doctor isn't alarmed, I am! I have completely wiped out fast food and restaurant food and have upped my fresh fruit and veggie intake. I hope this works for me!

Q&A: Weight gain during pregnancy?

Can I just say that I'm a little tired about hearing that we "only need an extra 300 calories a day"? If that is true, why am I genuinely HUNGRIER throughout the day? I am eating the same as I used to, but I've noticed that between breakfast & lunch, and then again between lunch & dinner (two times where I never snacked before), I'm starving. There is no way a "small bagel without cream cheese) is going to satisfy me at those times. I've been adding an apple + peanut butter, string cheese, gorp, etc. I'm sure it's over 300 calories, but I feel like I'm adding the minimum amount of food possible without going hungry. Anything less and I would be dieting.

Q&A: Weight gain during pregnancy?

I am also 17 weeks and so much hungrier lately! Adding a nectarine or two isn't going to cut it. I think you should be careful about what and how much you eat but you also have to listen to your body. If you're genuinely hungry adding a yogurt, fruit, salad, nuts, lean chicken are all fine to nourish your growing baby.

Q&A: Weight gain during pregnancy?

I found eating lean protein keeps me satisfied longer.. a boiled egg on some toast or some chicken and rice a slice of bread with cream cheese and a slice of turkey.... fruit is great to snack on but when I finish eating it Im still hungry :) I'm in my 14th week and after horrible morning sickness lost 15 lbs.from my normal weight. i managed to gain back 2 lbs but I am still way under what I was used to and although I snack all day and eat as much as I can, and don't do anything physically demanding! I still wake up to find I haven't gained an ounce!! I'm hoping now the pounds will start to tack on :/

Q&A: Weight gain during pregnancy?

I'm 22 weeks and have gained 10lbs so far. I try to eat a lot of fiber in the mornings and when I eat snacks that seems to help with the hunger pains. Also if im hungry im going to eat. as long as I make healthy choices when im hungry i have nothing to worry about.

Q&A: Weight gain during pregnancy?

I'm 22 weeks and happened to go to the doctor 3 days ago to find out that I had gained about 10lbs in 5 weeks!!!! I was shocked!!! and honestly...quite depressed! I guess it wasn't a huge problem, I hadn't gained much before, by my lord! I don't feel like I've gained weight anywhere else on my body but my belly, well and my boobs of course lol. I'm going to agree with you ladies...how am I supposed to add only and extra 300 calories a day when I'm twice as hungry?!?!?!

i AM 18 WEEKS AND I HAVE GAINED 7 POUNDS. I THINK AS LONG AS YOU EAT HEALTHY AND AVOID THE JUNK FOOD YOU SHOULD BE FINE THROUGH OUT YOUR PREGNANCY. I DON'T THINK THAT COUNTING CALORIES IS HELPFUL..LISTEN TO YOUR BODY AND START TO EAT 6 SMALLER MEALS INSTEAD OF 3 LARGE MEALS...

Q&A: Weight gain during pregnancy?

I am 30 weeks along with my first and have gained 11 pounds. At my 28 week appointment I was only up 5 pounds, and have gained 6 pounds lin only 2 weeks which was rather alarming,!! I was not over or under weight tp begin with, just average- 5'8" 150 lbs. to start.

Q&A: Weight gain during pregnancy?

For my son who is now 2, I had gained 50 pounds! So if you are looking for a what not to do...don't gain 50 haha. I craved bread and butter the whole pregnancy...not good! Next time I will do things differently. If you have a craving, indulge in it (in a small portion) because if your like me and you are craving something like chocolate you can't fix the craving with an apple. So don't stress about the weight but don't take pregnancy as a food free for all. Trust me.

Q&A: Weight gain during pregnancy?

I'm 13 weeks and have been feeling very icky the whole time...I still feel like I've gained a bunch of weight and I definatly have a big baby bump! I don't know how I can be getting bigger when I feel like I don't eat that much. The only things I can stomach are cereal, chix and mashed potato's and cheese pizza! But I'm hungry all the time even though I feel sick...not sure if I'm gonna get in trouble for gaining too much weight at my apt this Thursday! This weight/eating right thing is tough for a first time preg (maybe for all pregs!)

miaomi |

Q&A: Weight gain during pregnancy?

I'm also sick of hearing of only an extra 300 calories. I eat the same as before and I feel much hungrier throughout the day. I eat string cheese, apples with peanut butter, and almonds in between meals. I know these are adding up to more than a mere 300 calories a day and I don't care. Should I go hungry to keep it below 300???? Give me a break!

Q&A: Weight gain during pregnancy?

Am I a bad mommy-to-be because I fully enjoy a bag of M&Ms or a bagel with cream cheese every once in a while when I'm craving it? I'm going to have to go with no! We are all different, and I truly believe we work at our own pace, and it will all even out in the end. I am just about 22 weeks, I gained 5 lbs in the first 16 weeks then I gained 10 in the following 6. I'm still pretty much on track with where I "should be" but I think the key is to stop stressing out over it!!! We all know what we're supposed to be eating so be mindful and keep up with the fruits, veggies, and the healthier choices your body and baby need....but dont kill yourself because you are dying for a piece of chocolate cake or french fries or whatever magic food it is you'd give your right arm for. Have it and move on. As long as you keep it in moderation, you will be fine, your baby will be fine, and trust me....you'll feel much better!

Q&A: Weight gain during pregnancy?

Im 12 weeks and I have lost 3lbs. I have not been wating as healthy as I did with my last pregnancy. I have been so busy with work and my 2yr old that I havent taken out the time to get the right foods. I know im in the need for more fruit and veggie and I have to stop trying to eat so much beef. Before I was pregnant I was barley eating beef about once a week. Last week I had it three times. Hopefully I can get my act together this month. Good luck to all the mommies

Q&A: Weight gain during pregnancy?

I am currently 32 1/2 weeks and have gained around 28 pounds. It seems to all be in (besides my tummy of course) my legs, thighs and behind! I know that I have not exercised as much as I should have, which is no one's fault but mine! My doctor said it looks like I'll gain closer to the 30 lbs. marker, which is kind of depressing. Oh well, no turning back at this point!! Just need to start eating a bit healthier I suppose.

I'm 17 weeks 3 days i went to the dr yesterday and I've gained 14lbs. I try not to stress about my weight i gained a lot with my 1st child and lost it and more after i had her. We try to get in 2 - 4 miles every other day! I'm thankful for the creeper trail near our houses!

Q&A: Weight gain during pregnancy?

my doctor said the best thing to do is to eat 6 small, protein packed meals a day versus 3 large ones. that way, you're not as hungry throughout the day, and less prone to snacking and gaining weight. i am 4 months (16wks) and have actually lost 10 lbs. and the baby is still healthy and growing at a great weight. i found that the best thing is those small meals and exercising early in the morning, that way i'm not hungry, and i'm only consuming the necessary calories

Q&A: Weight gain during pregnancy?

It is a strange thing..the weight gain. I was just talking with my mom this morning about it. For most of my life I have been in a healthy range. I enjoy exercise and so had a pretty good balance about my weight/health. Now it's just strange to be thinking about it...from either way--don't gain too much or that's not healthy--don't gain too little or that's not healthy. The conciousness and the "weighing in" all the time is just difficult for me.

Q&A: Weight gain during pregnancy?

At first all I did was worry about how much I was gaining but I talked to my doctor and he said he doesn't care how much weight I gain and to just know what ever I gain I have to lose. He said why stress over it and instead to just enjoy my pregnancy. I felt relived and relaxed after that. I only eat when I'm hungry and I dont go overboard and if I really want a cheeseburger and fries I'm gonna have it once in a while.

Im 19 weeks tomorrow and have already gained 13 lbs! I was only 105 before getting pregnant, but when I gained the baby weight it all seemed to come at once. Sort of like going to bed with a flat stomach one night and waking up with an obvious belly the next morning!

I just had our baby boy Ayden six months ago and I have been trying to lose the baby weight I gained! : ( I used to be able to lose weight really quickly but it seems like it just won't come off! I found this website though with some really good weight loss products. I started this regimen of Excellean/Ultralean (I only took it because it is a natural fat burner) and it has really really helped! I was amazed at the results and no jitters or caffeine buzz at all! The website is UDETOXFORLESS.COM. Thought I would let the word out because they have the best prices I've seen around!

Q&A: Weight gain during pregnancy?

Let me just say, I am 24 weeks along and have gained 25 pounds already. I am not a huge preggo and you would never believe me if I told you I weigh 175 by the way I really look but my body likes to pack on the weight faster than most women I know. I get so tired of trying to compare myself to the little bitty already naturally toothpicky women out there that only gain 15 pounds. I know with 3 1/2 months left to go I will gain around 50 pounds but I am not super depressed about it. I gained 70 with my first so 50 would be improvement for me! I eat very healthy and work out atleast 5 times a week doing the Biggest Loser Bootcamp, CardioMax and Yoga videos along with walking for 30 mins at a time so I don't feel bad. My first baby was healthy and my second is growing and moving as she should so why stress about eating only 300 more calories a day. If I did that, I would starve to death. Seriously, I am hungry ALLL the time. I just dont go and eat french fries and massive bowls of pasta when I am, that may work for some but it doesnt for me. I guess my point is, I may gain 50 pounds but I know it will come off just as fast as when I packed it on with my first one when I lost 30 lbs within two weeks of delivery. I like food but it is all about finding a healthy lifestyle and eating the right foods and splurging every once in a while.

Q&A: Weight gain during pregnancy?

I am now at 23 weeks and 2 days and I just went to my docs today and I even asked how my weight was doing because everyone around me tells me I'm sooo tinny well I have gain 20 lbs so far and don't feel so tinny, hehe early on I didn't gain weight here and there it seemed to be all at once when I did gain. The best thing I could say is eat when you are HUNGRY and watch what you are eating or you will gain that weight you don't want. And as my doc said to me taking a walk for an hour everyday wont kill you and it will help with labor and we women need all the help we can get.!!!

Q&A: Weight gain during pregnancy?

I'm 34 weeks and have gained 50 pounds!!!! I don't eat any junk. I eat mostly fresh foods like fruits and vegetables and walk 3 miles everyday! I've noticed most of my weight in my butt and thighs. My pre pregnancy weight was 115 and I'm 5'5. I was a small baby and so was my husband, so hopefully I won't have this enormous 12 baby or anything! Yikes! My doctor doesn't seem concerned about my weight since I'm taking care of myself, but at this point I'm getting a little nervous that I won't be able to get it off. My doctor said it must be mostly fluid that I'm retaining and once I have the baby, I will lost it! Oh, well, I'm taking care of myself and the baby. Life goes on!!!!

Q&A: Weight gain during pregnancy?

I am 20 weeks now and have only gained 3 lbs. I lost about 10 lbs in the first couple months, probably from stress which isn't healthy but losing that 10 lbs put me at 136 lbs which no one believes I weigh that much to begin with. But anyways, I've got 3 lbs back. I eat what I want when I want but have always eaten a pretty balanced diet (I love my veggies!!) and walk constantly at work so that helps I think. Not really worried about gaining weight since at this point its all in my bra!!

Q&A: Weight gain during pregnancy?

I am 36 weeks and I've gained about 50lbs. I'm 5'8 and started at 130lbs. I have eaten very healthy and drink plenty of water, but I will also get into sweets a couple times a week. I saw my biggest jumps at my first doctors apt. (9 weeks) I had gained 12lbs already! I was eating everything and then around 21 weeks when I found out it was a boy, I had gained 12lbs. in 5/6 weeks. It has evened out to about 2lbs/week. My doctor isn't concerned about the weight gain, my mom gained 50 with me and 60 with my sister. I think if you are eating healthy and getting some excersise you should be fine. Everyone's weight gain is different, don't be concerned if you are slightly out of the norm. Enjoy your pregnancy!

i've gained about 35 pounds and i'm 33 weeks along. I feel like I'm gaining too much weight, but my doctor isn't concerned at all. I go on walks a few days a week as well as eating healthy most the time. My doctor said that some people gain weight no matter how careful they are about eating healthy and exercising. She said not to worry about it at all and forsure not to diet (not that I was thinking about doing that). So I guess I'm just going to continue doing what I'm doing and expect to gain more than I thought I would.

Q&A: Weight gain during pregnancy?

i don't like when someone tells you how much weight and at what pace you should be gaining it. it's different for every person and for every pregnancy. my first daughter i was raging hungry for hostess powdered donettes and hated spaghetti! i started at 145 pounds and i'm 5'9"- the day before i delivered i weighed 210 lbs- two months after i delivered i was down to 160. my husband was very concerned with how many donuts i was eating and even brought it up to the dr, and my dr shot him down "let her eat what she wants and when she wants" enjoy this time- eat what your baby and you want and relax the weight will come off :)

This is my 4th baby and the most i gained w/my other kids was 37lbs. i'm pretty small 5'3" between 108-114lbs normally. I'd say as long as the drs aren't concerned you shouldn't be either!

Q&A: Weight gain during pregnancy?

I'm at 33 weeks and I've gained 37lbs already. Most of the basic calculators- height vs weight- say that my BMI was around 22%, which is in the normal range, which implies that I'm already over my weight gain goals. However, my body still feels healthy. Yes, in a perfect world with a perfectly normal kind of body in whichever category, these guidelines would be absolutely accurate- but we're not all normal, and we don't all fit into these categories. Listen to your body. Have sweets&treats in moderation, and have healthy foods that you enjoy. If you don't like 'exercising', go to the mall and window shop for post-recovery clothes, baby clothes, other things- walk around for a couple hours. Focus less on the number and more on the quality and the way that you feel. If you get to nine months and you're at 50-60lbs of gain, but your body feels mostly firm and solid- muscle, not fat- then don't stress the numbers. It's not worth it. You have better things to worry about.

Q&A: Weight gain during pregnancy?

I am 23 weeks today and just weighed myself at home this morning. I came to work a little bummed about it, but after reading your posts, I feel much better. It is very clear to me that everyone is different. Most people I have talked to have gained 40-50 lbs with their pregnancies. I was hoping to shoot for 30 lbs max, but as of this morning, I have already gained 18. So if I follow the general rule of a pound per week, I've got 17 more lbs to go! I have NO complaints about my pregnancy - I was never sick, and haven't had any weird, unhealthy cravings. The only thing I can say is, for the most part I am a pretty healthy eater and exercsie about 3 times a week, but the pounds are packing on a lot quicker these days! I only gained about 4 lbs the first trimester, but from week 14 to 18, I had gained 8! The take home message for me here is - it is what is, and you will gain what YOUR body needs you to gain. As long as you eat everything in moderation :)

Q&A: Weight gain during pregnancy?

I am just 5 weeks and am actually less hungry than normal. For those of you saying the small snacks don't cut it,try a Cliff Bar. I used them for a supplement before working out and not getting to eat dinner until 8:00 at night. It really satisfied me. There are 260 calories, but lower in fat and contain 6 grams of protein. Also, you can buy them at Sam's Club in bulk for less than a dollar a bar. Just a thought of something that might work. Luna bars have fewer calories, but don't satisfy the hunger as long with me. My sister-in-law swears by them though.

Q&A: Weight gain during pregnancy?

I'm almost 11 weeks and have already gained 8 lbs. - the total weight I'm supposed to gain in the first trimester. It's honestly pretty hard to see the weight come on so "fast" but I'm trying to not focus on the number and focus on eating healthy and exercising. It's crazy how my body is changing. The weight is coming on pretty evenly over my body (arms, legs, belly and BOOBS), however, I'm not sure if that's good or bad yet. I just try to eat small amount throughout the day and walk a lot - it helps with the nausea as well.

Q&A: Weight gain during pregnancy?

Every woman is different. Yes there is a healthy standard to what you should aim to gain or not gain, lol but still your body will have a mind of its own, just be a bit more aware of what you put in your mouth. I am in my second pregnancy and im 25 weeks, ive gained 28 so far and im freaking out , I was doing great until my last appt. I gained 11 in one appt I was like wow! My doctor did tell me though, that a sudden spike in weight is common between 18 and 26 weeks so he was too concerned but he told me to watch my weight from here on out, he said not really for the health of the baby , he wasnt concerned about that but for myself to be able to get back into shape faster. So, im trying my best but man its ridiculous how hungry I am all of the time!!

Q&A: Weight gain during pregnancy?

Im 18 weeks and have gained about 7-8 lbs. So. Far. My appetite is GINORMOUS, but I am trying (operative word) to fill it with yogurts, nuts, fruit - really Im never satisified with FRUIT- veggies with dip, Godiva caramels in dark chocolate, chocolate covered blueberries, steamed soy milk with flavouring...Anything to keep me off the SALT. Holy schmooly weeks 14-16 I was like a Deer at a Salt Lick, and gained 5 lbs in water weight in 2 days. I cut is out and my weight changed to normal. I think you and your body (and doctor of corse) know best for yourself and your baby. I workout everyday (walking or yoga or weight training - but mostly something everyday) because it makes me feel great, helps with circulation for the baby, blood flow, keeps bloating down, and peps me up, that being said, I eat alot more because of it, and if I feel like a break I do take a break - sometimes days long. But I do not think restriction whilst pregnant is a good idea, its too damaging to yourself, yoru body, your self esteem and most imporantly your baby. Also, its a time in your life to cherish, and cherish yourself and baby and treat yourself kindly. Your body is busy growing a baby, it needs extra nutrients. And give yourself a break. If you want some ice cream - HAVE IT.

Q&A: Weight gain during pregnancy?

I'm 34 weeks now. Throughout my pregnancy my dr has told me I've been above the average weight but ws gaining in a fairly normal pace. And then at week 30 I noticed I gaine like ten pound in two weeks. They told me I needed to slow down so I started being more careful about what I eat and the portions. I found that as long as you're making a concious effort to sustain your baby without stuffing yourself to the brim any weight gain should be fine whether it's in the range or a little outside the box. I think the key is satisfying hunger without getting that full feeling.

Q&A: Weight gain during pregnancy?

I am 9 weeks along and I've lost 10lbs. I lost 6 lbs in one week! I've been so sick, it's hard to keep anything down. I've already been to the hospital once for an IV. I know the baby is only "the size of a grape" right now, but I'm a little worried. Has anyone else had this problem? How much weight can I lose before I should be worried? I am not underweight yet, but if I lose another 10lbs I will be!

Q&A: Weight gain during pregnancy?

I am 36 weeks and I have gained 15lbs. I was diagnosed with gestational diabetes this week and the doctor says my baby may be born larger than normal. However, my baby is only 5.5lbs. The doctor is really stressing me out because I was diagnosed so late and they want me to drastically change my diet. At this point I really don't see what making all these changes will do. I just want a healthy baby and considering that I have not gained a lot of weight and my baby is still in the normal weight range I'm just hoping that they are wrong and that the baby will be okay.

gieanna |

Q&A: Weight gain during pregnancy?

Try not to stress out about your baby. At 5.5 pounds, even if you delivered today your baby would be fine. Changing your eating habits now can help with your diabetes and allow you to keep the baby in longer without risking anything for you or the baby. Over all, do your best and relax. For tips on what to eat, I suggest http://www.whattoeatwhilepregnant.com. It talks about healthy foods and how you can make changes without stressing out. Good Luck.

I am 32 weeks. and I've pretty much remained the same weight throughout my whole pregnancy. I lost 20-25lbs in the beginning, but I had morning sickness really bad, and I've gained about 10lbs of that back. Thats all the weight I have put on. I'm due next month.

Q&A: Weight gain during pregnancy?

I am 11 weeks and have gained about 15 pounds. I blame it on the fact that I quit smoking cold turkey when I found out. Not to mention with the holidays and 1st trimester fatigue (does that go away, btw?--I am CONSTANTLY exhausted!!), I did nothing but stuff my face and sleep for about three of those eleven weeks. :) I cut out alcohol, which I used to drink a lot, so I thought I'd lose weight, but--? I keep swinging between hating myself for being fat, and rationalizing that this is "the one time" it's okay to gain weight. Not to mention my midwife yelled at me for gaining weight!! Is that normal? :( I feel disgusting and horrible most of the time. Maybe once I get off my ship (i'm in the Navy) I'll have more free time to exercise.

Q&A: Weight gain during pregnancy?

From reading everyone's comments I think it shows that everyone is different! I gained 8 pounds and am in my 14th week. I felt queasy in the first trimester unless I kept a full stomach and fruits and vegetables made me feel sick which is probably why I put on more than the recommended 3-5 pounds. I think we al have different bodies and as long as you are healthy and trying to eat what baby needs then everyone's weight gain is normal for them :)

I am 18 weeks and have gained 12 lbs. I was average in weight before getting pregnant and my Dr. told me that I have gained too much and should only be gaining 2 lbs a month throughout the pregnancy. This doesn't seem like very much to me..and I was sad to hear her say that...isn't that a bit on the low side??

Q&A: Weight gain during pregnancy?

I'm at 27 weeks and have gained 10 pounds. I had a lot of trouble with morning sickness up until week 16, so I actually lost quite a bit of weight in that time. Since then I've been gaining pretty quickly, about a pound a week. Every chart I look at online says I'm not on track and need to gain a lot more to catch up, but my doctor isn't at all worried so I'm just going to keep eating healthy, exercising, etc.

Im 25 weeks and have gained 14 pounds, although today I have eaten enough to feed a small village. The extra 300 calories is a crock, I am hungry every two hours and my usual snacks are not cuting it these days. I hope to stay in the 25-30 range.

Q&A: Weight gain during pregnancy?

I agree with most of the ladies on here. Relax & eat, give in to your cravings but in moderation! Get a cheesecake but just have a small slice in the middle of the day & share with others!!! lol I am 27 weeks now & I started out heavy at 178 (I'm 5'4) mostly due to fertility drugs & PCOS. I lost about 8 lbs. in the beg. & have gained that back plus 2 more lbs. at my last appt. (25 weeks). I feel like I am doing pretty good but just don't want to overdo it! I started walking again & try to eat less junk & more better for you food! My Dr. said she would like to see me gain more (she only counted 4 lb. gain from when I started seeing her at 8 weeks.) BUT the baby is measuring big & has been so she isn't worried about it. Hang in there ladies & hopefully we lose quickly what we gain after our babies are born nice & healthy!

Q&A: Weight gain during pregnancy?

I'll be the first to admit to myself (and the public) that I am not an example to follow. (I am a runner and love to exercise and watch my weight) but as soon as I am pregnant, I give in to nearly every craving I have. With my son, I gavined almost 50 lbs! He was 9 lbs a week early though too, but still! I lost it all and now I'm pregnant and due in April. I pretty much did the same thing this go round (although I ran much more before I got pregnant this time). I didn't gain any weight until my 4th month and put on 4 lbs... since then, I've added 26 lbs and I'm at 8 months... LOL And I wouldn't say that I'm OVER eating but I definitely following the trend of my first pregnancy. I think some of it has to do with your genetics too. You wouldn't be able to tell I've gained 30 lbs so far. . . I'm still wearing my regular jeans with a rubber band around the button! Just enjoy it (as long as you aren't putting your child or yourself at risk health-wise), and just remember to lose it afterwards. I did it! It can be done!

With my first 2-pregnancies I gained 50lbs during each. Now, on my third...I have only gained 10 lbs at 26 weeks but I look huge, HUGE! :( So, I don't even know what to think. Doc isn't worried at all as I am healthy and baby is right on track with all measurements, etc.

Q&A: Weight gain during pregnancy?

As the comments on this page prove, every body and every pregnancy is different. I think that the range of weight to gain is a great guide, but I have a feeling that genetics play a role in just how much weight we are supposed to gain. My best friend (who is totally healthy, and looks phenomenal after 2 pregnancies) gained 40 lbs with each of her babies. For the first, she ate as she liked and for the second was extremely mindful, and yet the weight gain was the same. For me, I've gained 20 lbs in 24 weeks, but my weight gain has slowed considerably (rather than speeding up, according to what the books and experts say). My doctor said that some of her patients basically level out in the third trimester and that the baby continues to grow. Mostly, I think that pregnancy is a time to celebrate and honor our bodies—we're creating, growing, and incubating human life! Don't get too hung up on the weight, but be mindful, stay away from nutritionally empty food, and enjoy the bump! That's my philosophy.

Q&A: Weight gain during pregnancy?

I have to say that is doesn't even make sense if you are supposed to gain a pound per week to eat only 300 extra calories per day. 3500 calories = one pound of weight gain/loss and so it seems to me more like 500 extra calories per day. Early in the pregnancy 200 per day seems right but later 300 seems to low, but it is what all the sites say.

Q&A: Weight gain during pregnancy?

i'm 24 wks. & 3 days & have only gained 4 lbs. It really worries me but my doctor says that sometimes it happens. This is my first child, a baby girl & so far she looks healthy & is very active. I'm really not showing at all, it just depends on what I wear. I eat like I should but the weight is just not comming on. I wasn't ever "skinny" by no means so it's odd to me that now my weight is at a stand still. I weighed more pre-pregnancy!! I'm due August 27th & no one can tell. People have even told me they quit asking about how the baby was because they thought I had miscarried since I wasnt showing!! Is anyone else dealing with this?

Q&A: Weight gain during pregnancy?

The 300 extra calories guideline, to me, seems like it's for the "normal" woman (whatever that is). Each person is going to be different because of their own previous eating habits, metabolism, whatever. I watch what I'm eating, but don't go crazy if I have a day where I'm more like 500-600 (or, let's be honest, 800) calories over what I usually eat. If I'm hungry, I'm hungry! I also have days where I don't need to eat any more calories than usual just because I'm not hungry. I'm at 13 weeks and have gained 6 pounds, which seems to be right where I should be. It seems to make more sense to just eat healthy (as best you can with cravings - believe me, this baby wants nothing but fried stuff and cheese if I leave the decision up to him/her!), watch what you're eating and you're weight, but more or less go off of how you feel instead of hitting a certain "restriction" during the day.

I am almost 22 weeks and I have gained 70lbs!!!!!!!!! I have no idea how it happened, but I've gained it everywhere, including my baby bump! My doctor thinks it's because I was so active before I got pregnant, and because I was high-risk in the beginning I had to be on bed rest for the first 3 months and was out of work. Hi ladies! I am 15 weeks pregnant and have already gained 14 pounds!!!! In my frst trimester I had gained 11 pounds and I was so depressed about it! A friend told me it's because I'm pear-shaped, although I was pretty small prior to becoming pregnant- I'm quite a workout freak! I wanted to be one of those cute pregnant ladies with just a belly but I don't think that's gonna be possible! I've been very lucky so far- so sickness, nausea, cravings.. it's like I'm not even pregnant! This is why I'm so depressed about the weight gain, because I just feel fat!! Anyway, I'm trying to my not be depressed and to enjoy my pregnancy. I am exercising and eating good, but if I want ice cream, I'm going for it!!

Q&A: Weight gain during pregnancy?

I am 30 weeks and have gained 20 lbs so far. My doctor told me at the beginning of my pregnancy to expect to gain anywhere from 25 to 35 lbs and although I feel confident that I've done everything I can to be as healthy as possible and maintain my weight, I am growing tired of the weigh-ins at the doctor's office. At my last appointment, my doctor belittled me for having gained 20 lbs in front of my husband. I was so offended and embarrassed. I try not to let it get to me but my doctor's comments have made me extremely self-conscious. She told me to "watch" my weight. Let me ask you ladies this: As a pregnant women at 30 weeks, how in the he** am I supposed to "watch" my weight? I am eating super healthy, and getting the recommended exercise, drinking tons of water, etc. What in the world am I supposed to do differently? I have decided to ignore my doc's comments and focus on remaining as healthy as possible. I'm going to let my body do what it needs to do to support this child; we all carry our weight differently and everyone's bodies are drastically different. I'm going to gain what I'm going to gain and that's that!

Q&A: Weight gain during pregnancy?

With my first pregnancy I only gained 17 lbs total. I worked out every morning, 6 days a week, and I ate healthy, but indulged with sweets all the time (major sweet tooth). I'm 9 weeks pregnant now and will keep up the same work out routine and eating habits. I also have a 2 year old now that keeps me super busy running around, so i'm sure that'll help. I don't mind gaining 20-25 lbs, but i am going to try and keep it under 20 lbs again! Most women should be eating 1500 to 2000 calories per day. You also need to keep in mind how many calories you burn each day. If you only eat 1200 calories, but are burning 1500, then you will lose weight and your baby will not get the neccessary calories it needs. Just food for thought. For example, i only eat 1800-2000 calories a day, but i burn about 1500 per day with my work outs and my BMR, so really, my baby is getting the extra 300 calories each day. It all evens out in the end, don't think too much into the "300 calorie" rule. Eat when you are hungry and eat healthy meals and snacks. and indulge every now and again.

I just left the doctor and I just have to say I am fed up with crying everytime I leave because of the ten minutes I see him for, he spends 9 talking about weight. Q&A: Weight gain during pregnancy?

I'm 25 weeks and I've gained 20 pounds so far. My doctor basically acted like if I gain more than 25 pounds before delivery, I'll never lose the extra weight!! I'm not worried though, because she gave me a list of things I should and shouldn't eat and I told her "I do ALL these things already!" I'm pretty conscious of how I eat because I was heavier as a teenager but lost the weight and have kept it off ever since. I think for me the biggest thing is lack of exercise--I used to run 3 to 5 miles a day, and while it's one thing to go out running during a Buffalo winter, walking gets a liiittle chilly (even though it's been comparatively mild). I'm starting to walk more now it's getting nicer, though, and doing prenatal yoga more often. So long as I'm eating well, getting some exercise and feeling energetic, I'm not super worried how much I gain. My DH says to just tell the doctor if she's that worried, we'll make sure we go running the day after my delivery, and see how she responds to that ;)

Q&A: Weight gain during pregnancy?

I´m 16 weeks and have gained 11 lbs. I gained 15 lbs in the first trimester (I basically lived on cheeseburgers as it was the only thing that didn´t make me gag, weird since I´m a vegetarian). I also broke my toe in my first trimester so couldn´t exercise (I´m a runner and could hardly even walk with the broken toe). I lost 4 lbs in my second trimester when I went back to fruits, veggies and no meat. I´m hoping to stay within the 30 lb gain. I´m active and a vegetarian, so I´m not super concerned and my doctor said because I was small I could gain up to 40 lbs. I´m eating quite a bit more than before I got pregnant, but I´m hungry all the time. I don´t eat at normal meal times anymore...I just eat when I´m hungry and stop when I´m full. I even get up in the middle of the night for a snack.

Q&A: Weight gain during pregnancy?

At 24 weeks I had gained around 30lbs. I have always been a healthy person and was pretty worried what my doctor was going to say. The entire first trimester I had MS and I could basically only eat carbs which definitely helped to pack the pounds on early. During my doctors visit my doctor stressed that I had to get my weight under control and I was really upset because I didn't know what else I should be doing. I had recently been craving sweets, but I wouldn't necessarily go overboard with the things I was eating. I regularly walk for a few miles a couple times during the week and I'm good about cutting out sugary drinks because I don't want to consume the extra calories. My next monthly appointment is this week and I'm nervous about the weight I've gained. I don't weigh myself at home because I feel my scale is off compared to the scales in the doctors office and that would stress me out even more. This month I definitely was watching more of what I was eating and some nights I would go to bed hungry just because I was worried about gaining weight. The other day I rode my bike for a few miles too. Is it possible that some women just gain more than the "normal" range?! I'm stressed about it.

Q&A: Weight gain during pregnancy?

I am kinda freaking out about weight gain. I am 31 weeks and have gained 26lbs. I've always been small and maintained healthy eating habits and exercised 5 days a week. I have continued going to the gym during pregnancy, 4 days a week. I walk, bike, do the elliptical, and light weight training for keeping my arms and legs toned. I feel as though I have gained and will gain too much! I know the target weight gain is 25-35lbs so i feel as though i will go over that! It's stressing me out to the point where I don't feel like I can ever indulge even a little in my sweet teeth cravings. I know gaining too much weight is just as dangerous as too little weight. HELP with some encouraging words!

i'm 28 weeks and so far i've gained 32 pounds. i started out at 5'3" and 116 and i gained most of my weight the first trimester because it was like i had a monster in my tummy and I WAS STARVING!!! my weight gain fluctuates, for a week or two, i'll gain like a pound, then within another week, i gain 5. i'm trying not to obsess too much but it's very difficult because i had such a restricted diet before. i know i'll be able to lose the weight, it's just hard coming to terms with seeing how much i've changed. i notice where i've gained weight but everybody who knows me says i'm just all belly and can't believe i've gained as much as i have already. dr's opinions also weigh in on how to feel about the gain. my current dr isnt concerned in the slightest about my weight gain and said everybody's different and my baby and i are coming along very healthy. with all this weight gain obsession, my dr was even concerned that i had an eating disorder (although i clearly havent been doing anything to fight that hunger monster. i eat healthy, but i do give in to a bite of ice cream or chocolate every day but not a TON, just a bite. my only concern is for my baby through this experience. i know i'll lose my weight, i think it's just most important that we listen to our bodies and make sure that our babies are healthy and growing.

Q&A: Weight gain during pregnancy?

I will be 17 weeks tomorrow and have gained 7-9 pounds. I say 7-9 because my weight fluctuates from day to day and throughout the day. I will be 118 one morning and 117 the next. At night I might weigh 119-120 depending on what I ate for dinner ( I try to go by my morning weight. ) Im TRYING not to obsess too much about weight gain... Im running 12-20 miles a week, HOWEVER I give in to LARGE amounts of sweets. When I indulge, I indulge! I eat a healthy breakfast, lunch, snacks, and usually dinner.... Its making cookies or buying ice cream after dinner that gets me in trouble! Its like I just cant stop eating until its gone... oops. I try not to worry about it too much, whats done is done and just try to run it off and do better the next day. Ohhh the joys of being preggers and having some intense cravings for SWEETS! Ill just have to work a little harder after our little girl is born :)

I am 21 weeks and have only gained 4 pounds. Does anyone else have high blood pressure? I am on medication and don't always feel good after I eat. Does this happen to anyone else?

Q&A: Weight gain during pregnancy?

You don't have to gain a lot to have a healthy baby. Both pregnancies I gained 11 lbs, and the second I had high bp and gd, which is supposed to make bigger babies, but that one was almost a whole lb smaller than the first. Lost all 11 lbs within two weeks of birth with my first, and my second is 11 days old now and the lbs are gone. You can do it!
