Q&A: How early should I plan on ordering nursery furniture?

How early should I plan on ordering nursery furniture?

Re: How early should I plan on ordering nursery furniture?

The Bump Expert

It’s great that you’re thinking ahead. We put this question to our users, and the general consensus was to go ahead and decide on a style or theme as soon as you want, and then start getting your furniture together in the second trimester.

Some things to ask yourself when working out your timing: How long will my furniture take to ship? Will I be able to help move the furniture around when it arrives, or will I be too big? Have I waited long enough in my pregnancy to be sure everything is going as planned? Am I giving myself enough time to have things ready if baby decides to show up early?

Still not sure what to do? Here are a few tips from the real experts -- our new moms on the 0-6 Months message board:

"We did pretty much everything during the second trimester, when I had the energy to help get things ready, and wasn't too big to help put things together. By the end of my pregnancy, my belly was so big and I was so exhausted that it would have been very stressful to have to deal with organizing and decorating a nursery." -- bicoastalgirl

"I would suggest as soon as you find out the sex or know the theme of your nursery. Our crib and dresser took 14 weeks to come in and we were finishing up the nursery one week before I delivered." -- chihuahua26

"I think I was maybe 28 weeks when we ordered our furniture. I didn't want to do everything too early and be twiddling my thumbs for months before she got here!" -- ValSept10

"General rule of thumb is to have everything done and set by 37 weeks (not just the nursery either -- have your car seat installed and inspected by then too) because baby can come at anytime after that." -- ErinCB

"We got the furniture when I was about 6 months pregnant. Main reason was to be sure everything was ok with the baby." -- MLK97

"We waited until I was about 25 weeks along. The nursery was finished by about the time I was 32 weeks along. I wouldn't have done it any other way." -- N5ssa

"Earlier the better. At least start looking around b/c some companies take longer than others for ordering times." -- Mestroud

Q&A: How early should I plan on ordering nursery furniture?

We have been slowly looking at furniture choices for the past two weeks, we found one we fell in love with. I started my second trimester a couple weeks ago so I felt better looking for stuff. Today my husband found the changing table/dresser 200 cheaper than anywhere else so we bought it, I'm not going to pass up a good deal like that lol!~

Q&A: How early should I plan on ordering nursery furniture?

We have always been flyer-watchers, and so even though I'm only 15 weeks, when we found a great deal ($300 for three piece nursery from Bily: crib, change table, and dresser!) that was a one-day sale, we just jumped on it. We figured we can always leave everything in the box for another few months and return it if we change our minds, but what are the chances the sale would come up again? Furniture is expensive! We did assemble the change table just to make sure it wasn't a piece of junk, and it's super sturdy and the colour is gorgeous! I don't regret buying early, as I've always been a big-time planner!

Q&A: How early should I plan on ordering nursery furniture?

I'd say AT LEAST 6 weeks before your due. We got our crib & our two dressers at our shower which was only 3 weeks before my due date!! We moved 6 weeks before d-day so this gave me a chance to paint the room and get it ready for furniture, BUT I'm now waiting for 3 replacement parts for the two dressers. My dad broke a piece putting together the chest, and the dresser had a badly scratched piece and a piece without all the holes drilled in it. It's going to take like 2 weeks to get the parts and I'm due in 7 days!!

Q&A: How early should I plan on ordering nursery furniture?

I would say that it is always better to order it sooner rather than later. It’s best to start thinking of what kind of furniture and style you want after you find out the sex of the baby. When I was looking for furniture for my sisters 2nd baby (which is a boy!) I came across some gorgeous cribs and changing tables at poshtots.com. I ordered her an animal themed crib that went with the design of the room (which was circus animals!), but since it was a custom made crib it took 2 months to get to be made and delivered. Luckily we had ordered early because the crib is exactly what the room needed. Little Jack is going to be living in style!

Q&A: How early should I plan on ordering nursery furniture?

I was 16 weeks when we ordered our crib and dresser. We got it from Mother Hubbard and Buy Buy Baby which takes 14-16 weeks to get in because they hand make them. So that puts me right about 30 when everything should be coming in. Just enough time to get the nursery all set up for my little one!! I cant wait!

Q&A: How early should I plan on ordering nursery furniture?

We ordered our furniture at 20 weeks. Most of it arrived within 4 weeks, however I am now 30 weeks and we are still waiting for a dresser/changing table combo. We were told it won't arrive until I am approximately 35 weeks. My suggestion is to order it as soon as possible. You never now what might come up!

Q&A: How early should I plan on ordering nursery furniture?

What I'm planning to do is put nursery items on the baby registry and wait to buy things until after the baby shower in case anyone gets me a crib, etc. Then I'll use the 10% discount most stores give when you buy the remaining items on your registry!

Q&A: How early should I plan on ordering nursery furniture?

We just entered our second trimester. I wanted to get over the 1st trimester hump. Right now we are exploring different nursery designs and looking at prices. The best thing for us is to establish a budget and get quality, convertible furniture that the baby can grow into. The best advice thus far is to make sure you are aware of the arrival time of your furniture. The set I like has a 2 mth delivery time.

Q&A: How early should I plan on ordering nursery furniture?

I'm currently 13 weeks pregnant and have already started looking for furniture. I decided to use Babies R Us' layaway program so that I can take advantage of the 20% off coupon for the crib a few days ago. Since they have to put in the order to the wherehouse anyway, now I can take another month to paint and empty out our spare room. I'm going to just keep on getting everything one piece at a time every few weeks and use all of the awesome 20% off coupons I'm getting!

Q&A: How early should I plan on ordering nursery furniture?

Has anyone ordered furniture from JC Penny? I am at the end of my first trimester and we are now starting to look around. I have come across a few in the JCP catalog now they do not display them anywhere. Theie prices are very reasonable but not sure the quality. We will probably order our furniture toward the middle of the second trimester so we can hopefuly have it in plenty of time. Also, where do you find the coupons for BUY Buy Baby and Babies R Us? Any other websites that offer discounts. Now is a good time to start saving!

Q&A: How early should I plan on ordering nursery furniture?

I had a mmiscarriage last december and I took the initiative before hand of ordering my furniture too early. Luckily we got pregnant 3 months later. I suggested that you wait until you're 30 weeks. If you are single and there won't be anyone helping you asseble the furniture cut that time in half because it is complicated putting things together when you are carrying extra weight. Make sure you keep all your receipts too.

Q&A: How early should I plan on ordering nursery furniture?

Being stationed overseas with my husband, we just found out we are almost 6 weeks. We went to ask the base BX about ordering nursery furniture and it can take up to 6months to get our nursery furniture! Everyones situation is different and I say, find out what your particular situation is going to be and if it feels right then do it. I might not get mine until im almost 7months, I hope ther arn't any damaged parts and I like it!

Q&A: How early should I plan on ordering nursery furniture?

Make sure you order furniture made of solid wood, NOT particle board, which contains formaldehyde and is extremely bad for kids to breath in and may even be a factor in Autism. Also make sure to order and paint everything well in advance so the other chemicals can air out before baby comes, even the crib mattress.

Q&A: How early should I plan on ordering nursery furniture?

I am waiting until I find out my second baby's gender, though I've done some price and comparison shopping for both genders. If anyone feels like they are "running late" take a deep breath and think about this...a bassinet or Moses basket (or Pack-n-Play) is ALL you need for the first three months anyway. My daughter never slept in her crib until she had outgrown her bassinet (much easier to roll over and get her out of the bassinet to nurse than to go down the hall to get her) and all my last minute panicking was a little silly. It's nice to look at a pretty nursery all ready and waiting for a baby to fill it in those last weeks, but it's NOT going to be the end of the world if something isn't ready. This is coming from a woman who's firstborn's labor started the day she moved into her first home. We got all the stuff into the house, set up the crib, tossed our mattresses on the floor, and went to have a baby. Not ideal by any means, BUT our first weeks as parents were wonderful, despite "not being ready."

I'm 20 weeks and waiting to know the sex of my baby. Not that it will matter because I'm going with affordable IKEA furniture, but I just feel it's a good starting point.

Q&A: How early should I plan on ordering nursery furniture?

The earlier the better or at least find out how long it takes to deliver to you. im 32 weeks when i was in search for it, I wanted to buy a MINI CRIB w Drawers on the side attached it was perfect for the amount of space in our room but they told me it would take 16 weeks to get here or a little bit more. I was upset because i didnt think it was going to take so long just for a crib to delivered.

Q&A: How early should I plan on ordering nursery furniture?

I am 15.3 today and I ordered my nursery furniture last week! Now I put mine on layaway so that I could make payments and not have to put it on my credit card. I have 3 months to pay it off and then once it is paid, it will be ready to pickup in 7-14 days so I will have my furniture by the beginning of September and baby is due mid-November! It's what works for us. Plus I don't have a room that is going to be a nursery right now so if I got the furniture now, it would stay in boxes for months!

AmandaAngel2000 |

Q&A: How early should I plan on ordering nursery furniture?

We decided to purchase our crib this past weekend (I will be 16 weeks tomorrow, G-d willing) because Ikea sells what Consumer Reports deems to be one of the safest cribs on the market (called the Leksvik) and it's sold for only about $130ish. It will no longer be sold soon because Ikea is producing newer, more "modern" models. For us, this made sense just so we can spend time finding a reasonably priced but safe mattress. It's also something that requires both of us putting together. The rest we plan on getting probably a few (if not several) weeks from now.

Q&A: How early should I plan on ordering nursery furniture?

We ordered our baby furniture when I was 19 weeks, and LUCKILY we finally sat down and decided to do it then, because when we went to order it, the guy at the store told us that the one that we had chose takes anywhere from 14-16 weeks to come in!! I'm very much the type of person that wants to be ready for EVERYTHING, so it feels kinda last minute to me, I'm due on Valentine's Day, and we won't get the furniture until the last of December, I hope, with the holidays and all.. Fingers crossed!

Q&A: How early should I plan on ordering nursery furniture?

I'm only 5 weeks, but my husband deployed in early December. I want his input for how to decorate the baby's room and I need his help getting things moved up to the 2nd floor where the nursery will be. I also need his help to assemble the furniture. We have no choice, but to get the nursery ready before he leaves even though I won't be out of my first tri-mester yet.

Q&A: How early should I plan on ordering nursery furniture?

I am five months pregnant and I am already thinking in preparing a nursery room. It is very difficult as I don't have so much space in my apartment. I am thinking to renovate the entire apartment and to divide my bedroom in order to create a separate nursery room. I've already contracted a junk removal west Vancouver team in order to help me get rid of the trash. I have also thought in ordering the nursery furniture as I want something special and it may last a few months until I receive it. I want everything to be ready before my baby gets born.

Q&A: How early should I plan on ordering nursery furniture?

The store we ordered from takes 8 weeks and I wasn't anticipating it taking that long. It's still enough time for us to pull the room together before our little guy comes but had I known the timeframe I probably would have ordered right after we found out the gender. Now I'll be finishing the room when i'm 8 and 1/2 months pregnant and huge!

Q&A: How early should I plan on ordering nursery furniture?

I've started the nursery interior design project when I was in the second trimester. I wanted to have everything ready before I gave birth. I've searched for some New York interior design firms and they made me a nursery project. I've bought all the necessary furniture and accessories and it looks great!

Q&A: How early should I plan on ordering nursery furniture?

I've started to make a nursery project when I was in the first trimester. I wanted to have everything ready when I will give birth. I've started with renovation and I made a nursery room with a bathroom. I've already bought the furniture but I still have to search for some affordable vanity cabinets for bathrooms as I need one in order to storage the baby's diapers and medicine.

Q&A: How early should I plan on ordering nursery furniture?

I think the general consensus is just about right. Planning and designing the nursery should take up a month or so depending on how good your artistic abilities are. Shopping for furniture can take place after you have the general look you want. Ordering furniture online can be a big plus if you want a bigger variety to choose from. Lastly, move the furniture around before it gets hard for you to move around.

It must be 2-3 months before you give birth, that is similar time-frame we did before my wife give birth. Cabinet is what we initially have, we only got used one from caldwells.com, a door shop and furniture store near Bay Area, San Francisco.

Q&A: How early should I plan on ordering nursery furniture?

You should think of the benefits of a professional kitchen renovation that requires a lot of work and special materials before planning the order for nursery furniture. There are many great houses that used to be a city attraction and the community should pay more attention to making them again a spot on the map.

Q&A: How early should I plan on ordering nursery furniture?

It's always a good idea to be ready for your newborn at least a couple of months before the due date. Some friends have recently redecorated their home with furniture from Moduform and this proved inspiring because planning to decorate a nursery is quite a delicate and personal endeavor but the sooner you start the better.
