Why might I have an ectopic pregnancy?

Re: Why might I have an ectopic pregnancy?

The Bump Expert

If you’re worried, keep in mind that a diagnosis of ectopic pregnancy is extremely rare. And as with any miscarriage, it’s not your fault. Sometimes there's no reason or explanation for it; it simply just happens. Otherwise, those who were diagnosed with ectopic pregnancies usually had previous medical issues and 50 percent had a previous tubal disease. Damage to your fallopian tubes can be a result of STDs (i.e. Chlamydia and gonorrhea), endometriosis (when similar lining of your uterus is found somewhere else in the body), appendicitis (inflammation of the appendix), pelvic surgery, or exposure to diethylstilbestrol (a drug that used to prevent miscarriage but went off the market in 1997 due to health complications). Women who conceive after getting their tubes tied or untied are also at risk. Finally, using infertility drugs or IVF (in vitro fertilization) also slightly increases your chances.

Even if you've had any of these previous diseases or procedures, remember that doesn’t mean you'll necessarily have an ecptoic pregnancy. But if you’ve already had an ectopic pregnancy, you're more likely to have another and should be monitored while TTC. Keep in mind that many women diagnosed with an ectopic pregnancy have healthy babies later on -- just make sure you're emotionally and physically prepared for your next try.

re: Q: Causes of ectopic pregnancy?

In April my DH and I had an Ectopic Pregnancy~My OB/GYN said that it was due to endometriosis (spelling?). Now we have had the go ahead to TTC again. I'm super scared that it will happen again, but so badly want a child. I am on my second dose of Clomid and am praying for a healthy pregnancy!

Scary Stuff!!!

re: Q: Causes of ectopic pregnancy?

I had an ectopic on Sept.4 and here in a couple weeks we will be trying again. I agree that it is very very scary and I am starting to get nervous because I can't imagine going through all of this again. I will start back on the same dose of Clomid that I got pregnant on so hopefully it will work and everything will be healthy!

jennademerly |

re: Q: Causes of ectopic pregnancy?

How long were you on Clomid before getting pregnant?

kriesberg |

re: Q: Causes of ectopic pregnancy?

Ok...I think this is really weird!!! I clicked on your picture and found out you were married on November 10, 2007.........I was married on that exact date too.....and we both have had ectopics! Crazy.

re: Q: Causes of ectopic pregnancy?

Ok....Sorry....Mistake on the wedding date!!! I'm new to this stuff......Sorry

re: Q: Causes of ectopic pregnancy?

I had finished my second cycle on Clomid. My dr said that the good news is that i CAN get pregnant. It will just be a lot harder now with only one tube...my completely ruptured and had to be removed. Have you started trying again yet? It's nice to have someone to talk to about this!

jennademerly |

re: Q: Causes of ectopic pregnancy?

I did not have a complet rupture....they gave me a shot of methotrexate which was the most heart wrenching experience I have ever had. My dr. told me the same thing about getting prego too. "At least you can get PREGNANT" I think those words have come to haunt me. We started trying in July again and have had no luck....I switched Dr. due to insurance reasons and this Dr. has put me on Clomid....I am on my second dose of that....I just recently went into have them check my progesterone(sp?) and they told me it was low...so don't really know what that means now!!! He did say that he will start me on Femara on my next cycle. I'm glad that he's moving fast....My biggest fear is to never be able to have kids. Are you going back on Clomid?

kriesberg |

re: Q: Causes of ectopic pregnancy?

I have heard of that shot-I almost wish I had that because going through the horrible cramping then having surgery was awful. Not that it wasn't awful for you..I didn't mean that! haha. How did the shot work? My cramping started on a friday then stopped for an entire week and I go back and think "ok, if i would have gone into the dr earlier maybe i could have had the shot and i wouldn't have had to have surgery"Yeah, I actually got my provera today since I haven't started my period yet and this medicine makes me have one. As soon as I start I will call and get back on clomid. My first cycle on clomid I also had really low progesterone levels but started my own period which was good. I got pregnant on the second cycle. What dosage are you on? Even if you have low progesterone levels there still is a chance. What is Femara? We probably won't be starting to try until 2nd week of November, I was in such a bad mood last week because I have been getting all of my bills from my surgery and it's just hitting me like, "I can't go through this again" I mean, I don't know people have multiple miscarriages and continue to go though all of this. I'm excited to start trying again, but so nervous. When will you take a preg. test? I really hope that it works out for you! I know I have said it before, but talking with you has helped me so much-there is hardly any info out there on this and it helps talking about similar problems!!!

re: Q: Causes of ectopic pregnancy?

As crazy as this might sound, but my cousin told me on the Wednesday before I found out I was prego, that she is prego. So I look at her and think that is what I would look like, if the pregnancy was healthy. I sometimes don't even want to be around her for that fact. I know that sounds selfish and mean, but it brings up way too many emotions seeing her prego. Breast Cancer freaks me out, my mother is a 3 year survivor and both of my grandmothers have had it too. So I think it's kind of ironic that they are putting me on a breast cancer drug. I asked my mom what kind of drug she was on, but it wasn't the same. So it will be interesting. I was on 100mg (i'm assuming mg) of Clomid. Yes I thought I was healthy too. Until they diagnosed me with endometriosis. Then it was down hill from there. Now I'm taking fertility drugs to help me along. It's crazy what GOD gives you.

re: Q: Causes of ectopic pregnancy?

this thing is loopy....one minute I can send a message the next time I can't, if you look at my profile, i put my email in it, so that you can email me if you would like! I'm sorry all those emotions came to you last night. You didn't deserve it, but it is the healing process, I found that the more I talked about it the more comfortable I was with it. My family has been super supportive with it. Good Luck with the weather! Tailgating sounds fun! I have to work on Saturday, and then I'm cleaning house on Sunday! Ick ---NOT MY FAVORITE JOB---

re: Q: Causes of ectopic pregnancy?

I also got married on November 10, 2007 in New Orleans. How insane is that?? I'm seeing the doctor this Tuesday to hear the official results of the pregnancy exam. I got two BFN and today got a BFP, but I'm also scared of having an ectopic. So far, it seems like I have all the symptoms of one - cramping on one side, light bleeding, etc. Wish me luck!

Q&A: Causes of ectopic pregnancy?

I found out I was pregnant on November 9th and then later that week I started getting pain in my lower abdomen. With a trip to the ER, they discovered it was eptopic. I also received the shot of methotraxate (spelling?) and experienced HORRIBLE cramping and bleeding. My sister told me, after she researched the product, that no where did it say it was to terminate an eptopic pregnancy and that women who are ttc should not take it or should wait a minimum of 90 days before ttc again because the medication can cause birth defects!! I wish they would have performed the surgery instead. How long did your OB/GYN tell you to wait after getting the shot??

Q&A: Causes of ectopic pregnancy?

Hey ladies. I am now TTC. I had an ectopic as well it will be 2 years ago in a few weeks. I didnt even know I was pregnant and thought the reason why I was bleeding so much was due to me screwing up my BC. But after a month of that I finally took a test and it was positive so I quickly called the doctor and was seen right away. What a horrible experience. I to had the methotrexate shot. We are now trying for real this time and we are both so scared of what the result will be and to go through that again that it has limited our sex drives a tad. I wish you ladies the best of luck and im glad that I wasnt alone in feeling the same things you were.

Q&A: Causes of ectopic pregnancy?

Well thank goodness for the support of my husband and family or I would be a wreck! I think it is important to surround yourself with family and friends during this time. After I had the shot of methotrexate, I returned to my dr this week because I am still having pain in my abdomen when I cough or sneeze or move too quickly. The dr told me it is because the pregnancy is still in my tube and has not yet totally removed itself which made me feel horrible! Do you know if this can cause additional damage to my tube?? I can never seem to get a straight answer from the doctor about it. I only have 1 functional tube as it is, so I am very concerned.

Q&A: Causes of ectopic pregnancy?

I had my ectopic in November 2008. I had the methotrexate shot and it was working but did not completely resolve the problem. I ended up in the hospital 4 days after the shot with blood pooling in my abdomen. I ended up having to have the surgery anyway. Luckily my Dr. caught it in time before my tube could burst. We were able to get pregnant again about 8 months later and are now expecting our son in May of 2010. Don't give up hope of getting pregnant again. Everyone is different!

Q&A: Causes of ectopic pregnancy?

I found out I was pregnant for the second time in Feb 2009. My 1st pregnancy went off without a hitch. No cramps, no morning sickness, nothing like that. So when i found out i was pregnant again I was expecting the same thing. Exactly 1 day after i found out, i was hospitalized with horrible cramps. Then we found out it was a ectopic pregnancy. We were crushed. I had surgery the very next day and that was it, it was over. I was extremely depressed for quite a long time. I felt like I went through all that for nothing because in the end I didn't get to have my baby. The doctor was able to save my tube and said I would be able to get pregnant again, but I am so afraid. I don't think I could go through that again. Until I found this site, my husband and I thought we were alone in all this. But after reading some of your stories, I've come to realize that everyone is different and it gave us hope. I just wanna thank all of you. It's nice to know we're not alone and that other people have been through this.

Q&A: Causes of ectopic pregnancy?

I just had an ectopic last month and it ended up taking one of my tubes. I had a HSG the previous month and was bleeding for over two weeks but my doctor said it was normal. I started cramping and passed out and then my husband took me to the ER and ran some tests and told us we were pregnant. My husband and I laughed b/c there was no way we thought that was right. It was not my time to ovulate during the one time that we did it. They rushed me to emergency surgery from the ED and then it was over. It was such a blur and almost feels like it was a dream. We are going to try again as we are in our mid-30's and want at least one child. It helped to read about others experiences so I don't feel so alone.

Q&A: Causes of ectopic pregnancy?

I had an ectopic pregnancy about 2 years ago. I didn't have any of the problems above. I was perfectly healthy and there was nothing wrong with my tubes. After a D&C and a shot of methotrixite my tubal pregnancy was gone. Some people can just get them. Then after the tubal pregnancy I had a misscarriage at 10 weeks pregnant. Now I am 8 1/2 months pregnant with my first child. And can't wait to be a mommy.

Q&A: Causes of ectopic pregnancy?

The doctor's couldn't tell me why I had an ectopic pregnancy in October 2009. I have never had any of the medical issues associated with ectopic pregnancy. All I do know is I found out I was pregnant on October 6 and on October 26 I was having surgery to remove my left fallopian tube. The surgeon said that the cilia in that tube were immobile and didn't help push the ovum into my uterus so it just implanted into the tube, Four months later, I just found out that I am pregnant again. We are taking things one day at a time. Paying attention to any pains or discomforts. I am now high-risk but the doctor's say that the "bad" tube is gone so my chances of a healthy normal pregnancy has actually increased.

Q&A: Causes of ectopic pregnancy?

Personally, I think that whoever says these are rare is wrong, they are just not discussed as often. Im my office my first preg was diagnosed as an ectopic and I was purely devistated for a long time. I couldn't understand how something so rare was happening to me when most of what you read say its related to older age, STD's etc etc. When I came back to work, I found out that 2 of my co-workers daughters also had ectopics about 2 years ago, both with their firsts and it was comforting to know that there are others in my situation. They both now have healthy babies. :)

mercuryice |

Q&A: Causes of ectopic pregnancy?

I think you're right, I had surgery to remove an ectopic last week, and with how many people have come out with stories of their own ectopics or their daughters or sisters or cousins, I don't think it can be as rare as people say it is....

Q&A: Causes of ectopic pregnancy?

Well I have PCOS and Cycle one of clomid 50mg took and I was pregnant. So excited and told everyone to find out that at 4 weeks they saw a mass in my tube. Had a lot of pressure and was told that they wanted to wait due to they thought I had a twin in the uterus too. I had to have emergency surgery to have the baby removed from the tube. We try again in June cycle 2 of clomid. I am really nervous and hope all goes well. They said there was scar tissue blocking baby's path and its all removed and clear now, I am just so nervous. I know ill concieve again I just hope baby gets to the uterus

mrspoplin |

Q&A: Causes of ectopic pregnancy?

Also, the horror for me was when they do surgery to remove the baby. Your body still thinks its pregnany for a good week. Your boobs still hurt your still craving food etc. And Its a reminder of whats not there... thats what was difficult. As well as your hormones are JACKED UP! Coming off of pregnancy hormones and such, I gave my hubby a gold medal for what he had to deal with. Poor thing.

Q&A: Causes of ectopic pregnancy?

I had a dose of methotrexate yesterday after learning that our pregnancy was ectopic. We found out during our first ultrasound that the fetus was not in my uterus. We went home with a glimmer of hope. The dr suggested that the gestational age was inaccurate and tested my HCG levels. The dr office called me first thing in the morning advising that I needed to go to the emergency room. My levels were above 6000. It's such a heart wrenching experience. Time stands still, but moves so fast all at once. I didn't have any of the symptoms that are related to a positive ectopic; however, our silver lining is that we found out the the gestational age was inaccurate and no surgery was needed. The condition doesn't have an age or risk factor. Like several others have expressed, I never had any of the risks factors associated with this. It's nature and we are not in control. Take care of yourselves and follow up with you appointments.

Q&A: Causes of ectopic pregnancy?

I was given methotrexate in February after becoming pregnant for the first time and going to the ER with severe cramps at almost 5 weeks. Later when I went to my OB/GYN and did a follow up ultrasound and blood tests, it turned out that what had put me in the hospital was a large cyst the size of a grapefruit rupturing, my baby had implanted in the right place and my hcg levels were doubling still, but 2 weeks later it all went away, the medicine had made the pregnancy non-viable. After a lot of anger and litigation we've moved past the incident and today for the first time I realized I might be pregnant again. I'm incredibly excited, and petrified all at the same time.

Two years ago my first pregnancy was eptopic and I had to have a DNC and received the shot to terminate. Just this past week I found out I am pregnant a second time but I am very wary about the out come. Q&A: Causes of ectopic pregnancy?

i had an etopic pregnancy in may. they had to do a laparoscopy, but they saved my tube. i was recently pregnant again, and due to bloodwork, we found out it was another etopic pregnancy, but it was on the opposite side as last time. we tried a metheltrexate shot first, but it didn't work. i had to have another surgery, and sadly to say, they had to take my tube. so now i only have 1 tube, and we are not sure it works properly. so my doctor is recommending ivf.

Q&A: Causes of ectopic pregnancy?

I'm just wondering... I have an appointment on Moday but while I wait. Back in May I went into the dr's with excruciating cramps and a period that had been going on for three weeks. After blood tests and an ultra sound I was escorted to urgent care. I found out we were pregnant and our baby was in my right ovary. That's right, not my tube, my ovary. The dr's gave me the methotrexate shots and put me on bed rest and as far as we know I don't have any damage. For the past 3 months about two weeks before my period I start to get horrible cramps on my right side. Which has caused me to call the dr freaking out thinking it's happened again. Thank god it hasn't, never want to go through that again. Have these cramps happened to any of you after your ectopic? Or is it just me?

Q&A: Causes of ectopic pregnancy?

I had 3 miscarriages before having 6 successful pregnancies. I had to have my tubes tied, with the youngest (01/2010) due to repeat c-sections and a high risk pregnancy. I have not had a cycle since then. About 3 weeks ago I started to have light bleeding and thought I was going to start...Didn't. Then it started to hurt. I had a UTI - turned into a bladder infection - turned into a kidney infection. I am still recovering from that. Now, I am still having A LOT of pain! Mainly in my ovary area and lower back. Left shoulder hurts and a lot of shooting pains. I went to the ER and they ask if I am pregnant. I say no, because I had my tubes tied. They do a urine test. Comes back neg. They do a blood test. Comes back positive, but low levels. They did an ultrasound. I have an Ectopic Pregnancy and I am 12 weeks. They gave me the shot, but because of how far I am expecting to have surgery on Friday, to remove it, if the shot doesn't work. After having my tubes tied I never expected to be back and dealing with this type of pain (not only physical but emotional as well).

Q&A: Causes of ectopic pregnancy?

I just had an ectopic Aug. 3rd, at 5 wks 1 day, and after 2 shots of Methotrexate, my hcg was back to normal in 1 month. We were given the go ahead to try in Oct., but it didn't work. Just wondering how long after the ectopic you were able to conceive? Its frustrating after only 1 month, but I know I have to be patient!

Q&A: Causes of ectopic pregnancy?

Hi ladies. I had a miscarriage & d&c on October 29. I was treated with methotrexate because the doctors thought it was ectopic also. Have any of you ladies opted into getting an HSG test done after ectopic? Thanks!

eveyx94 |

Q&A: Causes of ectopic pregnancy?

srfedorek-you might want to check with your DR about getting pregnant so soon. I was told to wait at least 3 months from the time my HcG test was back to 0. I also had 2 shots. The Methotrexate can cause birth defects if you get pregnant too early. Don't want to scare you, just wanted you to have the information.

Q&A: Causes of ectopic pregnancy?

I had an ectopic pregnancy on May 28th and received 2 shots of methotrexate on May 29th. My last blood draw was in August to show my HcG levels at 0. My husband were told to wait until September before we started trying again to make sure the methotrexate was completely flushed out of my system. We started trying September 1st (hehe the moment we were able to) after alot of emotions and careful thinking. We both went thru wanting to start right away to wanting to wait long time. I was very scared it would happen again bc our DR thought it was a fluke that it happened in the 1st place and didn't have any solid reasons as to why it happened which didn't help. Like FutureMrsIreland, mine wasn't tubal, it had imbedded on my right ovary. We both decided we are young and whatever happens is supposed to happen. He has a very big family and we are surrounded by babies constantly and we both want one of our own. We found out we were pregnant on Nov 11th and I am now 10 weeks today. Very nervous/anxious but all seems well and our DR has no concerns. We saw our little bean at 5 wks and it was amazing. Keep hope and faith and just remember, nothing happens without reason. We will all will eventually have our happy and healthy baby. Good Luck to all of you.

Q&A: Causes of ectopic pregnancy?

I had an ectopic in October and knew pretty quickly. I got a positive pregnancy test before my period was due. then on the day my period had been due, I started to spot and consistently spotted for the rest of the time. My Beta HCG was over 3000, which was high for how far along i was (i now know this is because baby implanted earlier than supposed to in my tube instead of waiting to float down to uterus). I had an ultrasound at 5 weeks and they could not see a gestational sac. You should be able to see a gestational sac on ultrasound once your beta hcg is over 1500. That is when the doctor was fairly certain it was ectopic, but i had to wait for one week to get a repeate ultrasound. At 6 weeks, the ultrasound finally showed the sac was in my right tube instead of where it was supposed to. I had two shots of methotrexate that day and my beta hcg levels did not begin to level off and go down for almost a week. The miscarriage process what very painful and took 6 weeks to complete. I will pray for anyone that is dealing with an ectopic. It is a very difficult and very painful, physically and emotionally.

Q&A: Causes of ectopic pregnancy?

it's good to read what other people are doing and feeling here. I am about 6 weeks along, have had consistant cramping since week 2 but was told it was normal and not to worry. Then this past Monday I had horrible pain in my lower abdomen and started bleeding. After I waited for 15 minutes on the phone trying to get through to my doctor they scheduled me in the same day for an ultrasound. no sac, just a mass....then the doctor did a pelvic exam. then she came back and hopped up on the table to give me the bad news. We did the shot, and I agree it's a horrible experience. it's an anti-cancer drug that forces any masses within your body to stop growing and die off; and I had to lay there while they gave me two shots. I know I didn't get to feel any inside movements or anything like that, but still, I'm heartbroken. And I know we'll try again but it's sort of hard to make your mind go from I'm pregnant to I was pregnant. I wish everyone the very best and hope your future pregnancies are healthy and happy!

Q&A: Causes of ectopic pregnancy?

Just wanted to give you ladies some hope; I had an ectopic pregnancy last April and ended up having a laporoscopy. My tube was saved, but I was so nervous about conceiving because I didn't want to go through the pain, frustration, and hurt all over again. I am now 9 weeks pregnant, and just saw our baby's heart beat for the first time last week, IN MY UTERUS. If you have had an ectopic, you know you CAN get pregnant. Try not to worry so much when you are trying to conceive, because stressing out can make conception more difficult. I hope all of you ladies with my same experience go on to have great healthy pregnancies. I wish you all the best of luck; it will happen! :)

It's comforting to read all these stories I myself just went through an ectopic about 2 1/2 weeks ago.I had to have my right tube removed at the same time...the doctors tried to do laperscopic but they said it was too big so I had to have a laperstomy like a c-section (wonder if it was twins since I was only 8 weeks)during the surgery they manage to clean me up that is removing scar tissues and whatever was blocking or around my tubes...the ectopic was caused by scar tissues from a previous c-section that was performed almost 16yrs ago to my first daughter..go figure didn't know that was going to happen ...so glad that the doctors cleaned me up inside...they said I am healthy and ready to conceieve my other tube looks good they told me...still recouping and waiting to go back to the doctors next week to hear the good news when I can start again...I know that God is able...and my hearts desire is to give my husband a baby on his birthday which will be in March of next year...I will be posting to let you know of my blessings...

Q&A: Causes of ectopic pregnancy?

I had an ectopic spring of 2010, it was a surprise pregnancy but we only had 3 days of pregnancy bliss before I started bleeding. After monitoring my hcg levels they decided I was miscarrying and asked if I wanted a d&c or methotrexate. Keep in mind they gave me an ultrasound and didn't see anything in my uterus. I wasn't sure what to do and I was asking about potential risks of both procedures. After seeming annoyed at all my questions they told me to GO LOOK ON WEB MD. Are you serious!? I was already devastated. I couldn't believe they told me to do that instead of giving me the time and answers I needed. Good thing I opted for the metho. because it was ectopic and a d&c wouldn't have done anything and my tube would have ruptured. Oh by the way when I was getting my metho shot the nurse had no idea what she was doing and bounded into the room saying, OH! You're 6 weeks pregnant!? that's so exciting. I was like um no you are giving me a shot because I'm miscarrying an ectopic. Thanks for being so dumb! Anywho after all that turmoil, worry, pain and stress we decided to wait 6 months before trying again. After 5 months of trying I am happy to say that we are 22 weeks pregnant with a baby boy! So girls pray and trust God to give you the gift of a child because he can do anything!

causes-of-ectopic-pregnancy

I just had an ectopic this passed Thursday. Was about 5 1/2 weeks when the cramping and bleeding started. My husband took me to the ER and a sonogram confirmed that the baby was in my right Fallopian tube. They tried to salvage my tube but couldn't due to cysts that had formed all over it. I never knew I had cysts there, never had pain or anything! Anyway that's why the embryo got stuck there. It's a really difficult process and I have been having a hard time not wanting to cry whenever I think about it. Has anyone else had a similar experience with cysts forming on their tubes? It's been really comforting reading all your stories, makes me feel like I'm not so alone in this.

Q&A: Causes of ectopic pregnancy?

Looks like you've had a good bit of feedback on this, but I just suffered a very painful ectopic back in august. What a nightmare. It was so very painful. It had not ruptured, and luckily I didn't require surgery or a shot. Both doctors I saw confirmed that it can be caused by a number of things...a previous bout with PID(pelvic inflammatory disease that scars the fallopian tubes-caused by a number of other things), endometriosis, previous abortions or even random cysts that push on and block your tubes. Hard to tell what caused mine, but I am now 8 weeks pregnant and hoping to not go through that ever again. I won't have an ultrasound until July 3rd, if even then...looks like they would want to get in there and see what's going on after just having that happen in August. Good luck to you!

Q&A: Causes of ectopic pregnancy?

There really is no explanation other then the embryo nested in your tubes other then in your uterus. I had one March 2013 (Almost died too from bleeding into my abdomen) and it wasn't fun. I didn't even know I was pregnant (i thought my light positive was a false positive because it came at the end of the 10 minutes) and just thought I was having a bad period.... until I started feeling like my appendix ruptured! The pain WAS not constant, sometimes barely noticeable (making me think it was all in my head), but DO get checked out always. i ended up having a D&C (I was pregnant with twins, one normally implanted one in tubes... both hearts stopped beating), and a laproscopic surgery to remove my ectopic baby :( . I miss them both.

Q&A: Causes of ectopic pregnancy?

I was 18 when I had my first ectopic pregnancy, I handled it very bad, I stopped eating, quit talking to everyone that I didn't have to talk to. My Fiancee and I broke up and we called off our wedding. I don't know how far along I was but the love was there, I was in so much pain and during my miscarriage I was a dish washer at the Airport so I was on my feet all day long. my boss wouldn't let me off work to go to the ER. I ended up having to quit my job because of all the emotional stress caused from working with people that I couldn't communicate with. My miscarriage finished its stuff on October 25th 2013, 3 years earlier I found out I was having a little boy, whome i had no complications with. On January 8th 2014 I found out that i am expecting again and there isn't a day that goes by that doesn't scare me, constant thoughts of losing another baby cares me, I am 8 weeks and 6 days pregnant today. Im scared that ill lose this one too.
