Your life doesn’t stop when you’re pregnant, and neither should your workouts. Once you get over the initial exhausted hump and roll into the high-energy second trimester, there are tons of excellent reasons to hit the gym or pool.

First things first, you might be wondering: Are maternity workout clothes even necessary, or is it possible to make do with your pre-pregnancy wardrobe? “You definitely can make do in your first trimester—however, when you’re in your second and third trimester, your leggings are really going to start cutting into your bump and it will start to feel uncomfortable to move in,” says Megan Roup, a pre- and postnatal certified trainer and founder of The Sculpt Society (and a mother of two herself!).

The investment in yourself (and your wardrobe) is totally worth it. The US Department of Health & Human Services (HHS) recommends getting in 150 minutes every week of moderate-intensity aerobic activity during pregnancy. And mega benefits—such as reduced risk of gestational diabetes, unplanned c-sections, and preeclampsia, not to mention improved physical and psychological well-being—make exercise a no-brainer. Of course, you want to be comfortable and still look good (hey, we hear you). No sweat! We considered quality, durability, comfort and style, and uncovered the best maternity workout clothes—including sports bras, tops, leggings, pants and shorts—for every need and budget.

Best Places to Buy Maternity Workout Clothes

If you’re expecting and on the hunt for maternity activewear, it’s worth popping into a few stores to see what brands you like best. You don’t have to break the bank stuffing your closet with tons of maternity workout clothes, but a few key pieces (like an excellent sports bra and some pregnancy-friendly yoga pants) can make a dramatic difference in how comfortable you are during your workouts—and how great you feel after them. And we’d say anything that gets you to the gym a bit more often is a sound investment. Ready to start shopping? Check out some of our favorite places to buy cute maternity workout clothes that really go the distance.

Best Maternity Sports Bras

One major body change many pregnant people experience is a rapidly growing bust. It’s often one of the first changes to cause discomfort, resulting in that familiar red ring that surfaces below the breasts when you’re wearing a bra that’s too small. This body change makes a well-fitting pregnancy sports bra (or two!) an essential component of your maternity workout clothes collection.

As early as six weeks into pregnancy, breasts can start to increase in size. They’ll continue to grow throughout pregnancy—in fact, many women go up one to two cup sizes. If you’re well endowed to begin with, workouts (and daily activities) can quickly become uncomfortable without a maternity sports bra. Keep reading to discover some top-rated maternity sports bras.

How We Chose the Best Maternity Workout Clothes

To choose the best maternity workout clothes, we carefully considered a variety of factors, including fabric quality, durability, style and comfort. We combed through user reviews (only considering items rated four stars or above), leveraged our familiarity with leading maternity brands and relied on our own experiences as editors and mothers to find the best products available. We also believe the best maternity workout clothes should be equal parts functional, comfortable and stylish. So, when determining the top options, we were careful to choose clothing made from high-quality materials such as breathable fabrics, stretchy spandex, and other materials that will seamlessly grow with you throughout your pregnancy.

We also selected options that are easy to care for—because the last thing you should have to worry about is taking clothing to the dry cleaners. Most of the maternity workout clothes options above are machine-washable for added convenience. Last but not least, we sought to balance quality and affordability, leaving you with maternity clothes that will get you the best bang for your buck—and stand the test of time.

What to Look for in Maternity Workout Clothes

Shopping for maternity workout clothes can be a bit like Goldilocks’s hunt for the perfect bed: You’ll want something tight but not too tight, stretchy but not too stretchy, supportive without being constrictive—and the list goes on. Not to mention, determining what maternity workout clothes work best is a highly individual process that often involves trial and error to discover what you find most comfortable. However, there are some key points to look for when shopping to help streamline and simplify the process:

  • Fabric. If there’s one thing you consider while shopping for maternity workout clothes, let it be the fabric. “As my bump was growing I really wanted to feel comfortable in the pieces I was wearing,” Roup says. “The fabric needed to feel soft.” Seek out materials that are breathable and moisture-wicking, stretchy and, most of all, soft for the most comfortable fit around your growing bump.
  • Fit. How the clothes fit will also be critical to how comfortable they are (and who wants to exercise if they’re uncomfortable?). Many women, including Roup, prefer a high-waisted pant during pregnancy. “It needed to fit over my bump,” Roup says. If you’re not sold on the over-the-bump fit, there are also maternity workout pants and shorts that feature foldable panels—providing the best of both worlds.
  • Support. With a growing and changing body, any additional support you can get is key. Maternity workout clothes can have built-in features like compression, belly bands and shelf bras (a favorite of Roup’s) to help support you from all angles. “I loved … a tank top with a built-in shelf bra that made me feel supported,” Roup says.

Keeping these elements in mind when hunting for maternity workout clothes should help you find quality pieces that will work for all nine+ months.
