What over-the-counter medications can I take safely in pregnancy?

Re: What over-the-counter medications can I take safely in pregnancy?

The Bump Expert

Many over-the-counter medications are safe during pregnancy, but there are a few surprising drugs that can lead to problems for your fetus. In general, always speak with your doctor prior to taking any medication(prescription, over-the-counter, or herbal). Also, keep in mind that certain vague symptoms you wouldn’t think twice about in normal times (a headache, for example) can actually indicate serious pregnancy-related complications. And, before taking any over-the-counter medication, think about what other medications you are taking. Even medications that are considered safe in pregnancy can become dangerous when they interact with others.

Here are some common pregnancy problems, along with a quick summary of related meds that are probably safe... and ones that probably aren't.

Aches and pains: Acetaminophen (Tylenol) appears to be safe during pregnancy for treating general aches, pains and headache. Medications in the NSAIDS (non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs) class, including ibuprofen (Advil and Motrin) and naproxen (Aleve) may be associated with congenital heart defects, specifically septal defects, when taken during the first trimester. NSAIDS have also been linked to other heart abnormalities and low amniotic fluid levels when used in the third trimester.

Congestion and allergy symptoms: Antihistamines such as diphenhydramine (Benadryl) and loratidine (Claritin) appear to be safe during pregnancy. Pseudoephedrine (Sudafed) may be associated with birth defects involving the abdominal wall. Also, decongestants (such as phenylephrine) may affect blood flow to the placenta, and should generally be avoided throughout your pregnancy.

Cough: Two major cough medication ingredients -- dextromethorphan (a cough suppressant) and guaifenesin (an expectorant, which means it loosens up thick mucus) -- both appear to be safe during pregnancy, although both have been tested in relatively few studies.

Constipation: Both Metamucil and stool softeners like Colaceappear to be safe in pregnancy.Laxatives, mineral oils and rectal suppositories may stimulate labor, so should only be used after speaking with your doctor.

Heartburn: Antacids such as Tums and Mylanta appear to be safe in pregnancy, and for most women, they significantly improve heartburn symptoms. If antacids aren't enough, famotidine (Pepcid) andranitidine (Zantac) do not appear to be associated with any pregnancy complications.

All this said, there are situations where the potential benefit of taking a medication outweighs any potential risk to the fetus. The most important piece of advice regarding medication -- talk with your doctor! Be honest about your questions, concerns and medical history, and you should be just fine.

re: Q: What medications are safe?

My dr said that tylenol and tylenol PM are fine. Unforunately, the PM and Benedaryl do nothing for my insomnia, and there are days that I am barely functioning. My dr said Ambien was ok if really needed but to try to limit my intake - my question really is, what's worse for the baby? Me barely sleeping or taking the Ambien?

Q&A: What medications are safe during pregnancy?

Some of the other meds not listed (or I overlooked) that are safe are: Gaviscon - heartburn, indigestion Ambien - Rx only, for sleep deprevation, in moderation or half a pill instead of a whole one Excedrin Extra Strenght - in moderation, if acetominophene doesn't cut it Zoloft - Rx only, for depression or anxiety (wean off in 3rd trimester) Unisom - sleep deprevation, can be taken in generic form also The ambien question above, it's okay to take it through your first and second trimester, but once in the third, you should wean yourself off it so the baby won't be addicted to it. I have been taking ambien for 3 years now, and my doctor told me it was fine to take, but gave the advice above. I think that's al I know. Hope it helps :)

I was prescribed with a drug for my migranes called flexeril. It's a muscle relaxer which i was suprised to be prescribed with. the tylenol i've been taking doesn't help and i'm afraid to take the flexeril because it might make the baby too relaxed, and with the lack of muscles she has now, will she be able to handle it?

Try Tylenol and chocolate for headachs, between the caffine in the chocolate and the tylenol it should be able to help the semi natural way. Also "digestive advantage lactose intolerance " seems to be a big thing for being lactose and tolerant, if anything i would ask you're doctor about being able to take that.

Excederin has a lot of caffeine in it (if you take two, you have gotten more caffeine than is in a cup of brewed coffee). I wouldn't take it. As for Tylenol PM, it is tylenol (which is okay) and benedryl (which is okay).

Q&A: What medications are safe during pregnancy?

I just took Tylenol Cold & Sinus - according to my doctor, I can take it - but according to a friend who is a trauma nurse, she said only regular tylenol. I am 10 weeks and now I'm freaked out! I only took one dose and this is only the 2nd time while being pregnant that I've taken anything to alleviate a sinus headache/cold. I suppose excessive worrying comes with the territory of being pregnant.... but I wish now I had just suffered through the headache so I could sleep without worrying that what I just took is going to hurt my baby.

I am not pregnant yet but hope to start in the spring. I am a migraine sufferer and I have found that putting an ice pack on my head really helps. You might want to try it. My husband had one about a month ago, he put the ice pack on his head and fell asleep within 20 min and woke up the next day and it had gone away.

jessicahan |

Q&A: What medications are safe during pregnancy?

I am in my last year of nursing school so I looked this up in my drug book. Methylprednisone is category C which means that is has been tested on anamils and not humans and in the animals it did show adverse effects on the fetus. The benefits from the use in pregnant women may be acceptable despite potential risks. benefits out way the risk basically

Q&A: What medications are safe during pregnancy?

I just noticed that there is nothing on here about multiple medications. Please read all information that comes with your prescriptions, and non-prescription medicines. I have a Thyroid condition and the pills I take everyday for that interact with most cold and sinus meds, with serious effects on my heart and blood pressure. Also many over the counter meds interact with some blood pressure meds. All I can really recommend is that you talk to your providers, and make sure that your PCP knows you're pregnant, and that your OB knows what meds your PCP has you on, and don't be afraid to ask the pharmacy questions about over the counter drugs and any interactions they may have.

Q&A: What medications are safe during pregnancy?

Migraine sufferers: When I have a migraine I immediately do the following; 1. start drinking tons of water, because I usually am dehydrated when it comes on, 2. take three 200 mg Ibprophin, but I guess I'll have to switch that to Tylenol. 3. get into a hot shower, and just let the water run over my head and face for 10 minutes. 4. apply multiple ice packs to the back of my neck, top of my head, and my forehead. and 5. try to fall asleep in a dark room with a little white noise. I've been told that a half a can of CocaCola is helpful once you have the migraine, and read that the caffine amount isn't actually that high. I don't know why, but the hot and cold combination (in that order) really makes the difference in kicking my head aches. Good luck!

Q&A: What medications are safe during pregnancy?

I have been in and out of the hospital for kidney stones and they gave me an antibiotic, morphine and another painkiller and assured me as long as you dont use these regularly they wont have any negative effects on the baby. As long as you arent abusing them, and turning them into a habit and addicting your baby, you will be fine. I also take Zyrtec (for horrible allergies) on a daily basis along with my prenatal, and the doctors assure me this will do no harm to my (2nd) unborn baby.

Q&A: What medications are safe during pregnancy?

I highly recommend using a Neti Pot for sinus problems and allergies. It is totally natural and harmless. You just use a little tea-kettle looking vessel to gently poor saline through your sinus cavity. It does not hurt as long as the water is body-tempurature, and it has absolutely no side effects. It helps my allergies and helped me get through a cold. You can get them at CVS or Longs or probably any drugstore or online.

Q&A: What medications are safe during pregnancy?

OMG My damn OB-GYN is a nut! He told me Sudafed was fine to take, so I've been taking it! My cousin told me not to take it but I heard every doctor is different. Now I'm finding out it's linked to birth defects! That's it! I'm not taking anymore medications until after this pregnancy is over and I'm done breastfeeding!! I don't think I can trust his opinion anymore!

meghan_marie |

Q&A: What medications are safe during pregnancy?

I called my OB-GYN to see what I could take for my cold and they said plain sudafed was ok since I was past 12 weeks. I'm assuming it's mostly dangerous in the first trimester because that is when most of the organs and everything are forming so it probably increases your risk for birth defects if taken in the first trimester. I am 17 weeks, however after reading about sudafed during pregnancy, I'm a little scared to take it. Idk though because this cold really sucks! Why does everything have to be so complicated when you're pregnant?!

susie985 |

Both of my Dr's have said that Claritin or Zyrtec is safe daily treatment for allergies while pregnant. Also, Tylenol with a cup of coffee or diet coke (since I don't drink caffeine normally) are my best bet for curing headaches.

Q&A: What medications are safe during pregnancy?

Bottom line ladies: ASK YOUR DOCTOR! If your doc is not available, ask your pharmacist. Some tips on OTC meds: 1. take them only as directed on the package (whether you're pregnant or not), 2. keep in mind that many meds may have similar names, but contain different ingredients, example: Excedrin Tension Headache, Excedrin Migraine, Excedrin Back & Body..... read labels closely to know what you're getting. All products have labels that list the active ingredients and what they're for. 3. Be smart about drugs. Pregnant or not. Know what you're taking and why, always consult your doc or pharmacist when you have questions. They're the ones who have studied meds and know what they're talking about. Don't rely on stories of what other people have done, what they think is safe, etc. And just because a med is OTC does not mean that it's safe and foolproof.

Just a heads up to anyone who has a cold. Talked to my Dr yesterday and she said that menthol- like in most cough drops and vicks vaporub- shouldn't be used because there haven't been many studies on the side effects during pregnancy. Q&A: What medications are safe during pregnancy?

For those who are struggling to sleep for all the reasons tat are uncomfortable right now during pregnancy my doctor told me that yes tylenol pm or unisom is fine to take while your pregnant. It doesn't totally knock you out or anything like that. It simply helps you get sleepy to go to bed and when you have to get up to pee or whatever you are still tired enough that you can very easily go right back to bed and get to sleep without struggling with worrying about everything that we are thinking about before baby comes. It has helped me so much to get a good night sleep. I was waking up at night and not being able to go back to sleep because my mind would not stop thinking about everything like, breast feeding isues and stuff like that.

Q&A: What medications are safe during pregnancy?

Yes, for certain, ASK YOUR DOCTOR! Also, for first-time pregnant ladies: Don't worry so much! If you take something ONE time at a normal dose without realizing the risks, it's very unlikely to hurt the baby! You can't know and do everything right. There's so much lore and myth out there, and you have to choose what to believe anyway. If in doubt, don't take it! (And if you really think you should, then ask your OB first! They don't mind if you call and bug them, really.) And if you're taking a daily Rx, you should talk to your OB rather than asking some of us other preggos on a website! :)

If you are unsure what medications are safe, there is a free state-funded confidential service that can evaluate the risk of your medication during pregnancy or while breast-feeding. They can evaluate prescription or OTC medications. They can also discuss the risks of maternal illness, vaccinations, occupational or environmental exposures, and paternal exposures. I have had some friends use their services and recommend them to me. Their website is http://www.ttis.unt.edu/index.htm and their phone number is 1-800-733-4727

Q&A: What medications are safe during pregnancy?

I am having a real tough pregnancy, and Im only at the halfway point. I have hyperemesis, I suffer from hardcore migraines, I have allergies (even though I have NO clue what Im allergic to, and neither does my doc), I'm on my third sinus cold during this pregnancy, and I have to be even more careful what I take whether it be OTC or Rx b/c of my seizure disorder and diabetes. I will tell you ladies this much, at least from my opinion..... Zofran is amazing for nausea! Phenergan, Reglan and all that other stuff is nothing...doesn't work. Another helpful tip for nausea/morning sickness: keep dry cereal in a sealed container by your bed for the morning or middle of the night. Trust me, it will come in handy. Lollipops, hard candys, and Altoids or mint gum works great too!!! Migraines are a total b**ch...Excedrin is my best friend, which I can't use anymore. Tylenol is useless. My doc gave me an Rx for Imitrex and it's just as useless as Tylenol. The can of coke does work, as does a dark room and ice packs. Sinus colds, Im still trying to conquer....No decongestants, NO sudafed. I'm hearing mixed things about antihistamines like Benadryl but I don't trust it. All I've been using is Vick's VapoRub, and I don't see how it could effect the pregnancy. Hot showers are working too, as long as they're brief. :) Oh, and to the mom who mentioned her doctor prescribing Flexeril for migraines....I'd get a second opinion because he sounds like a nut. My sister suffers migraines too and she told me aside from Imitrex, two others would be Florecet (sp?) and Midrin...not sure how safe they are for pregnancies though.

To help me sleep, I take Unisom. You can buy it in tablets or chewables. It's cheap at CVS. The nurse recommended it to me early in my 1st trimester and they've worked wonders to help me with my insomnia. Have had no bad side effects. Tylenol helps my headaches, personally. I took 1/2 dose of Ny Quil last night for a cold, and now I'm wondering if I made a mistake. It seems OK today but I should have read the label first. I guess, if in doubt, call your OB and ask her if you can take something, just for peace of mind.

Re: dental work. You need to wait until you are in the second trimester. That is the safest time to do dental work. Also when you tell them you are pregnant they change the medication used (ie mine used carbocaine instead of novacaine). No x-rays.Untreated dental work can actually be riskier than treating it so discuss the degree of need with your dentist and OB. FWIW - I had 3 fillings when I was pregnant with my son and he turned out fine:) HTH!

Q&A: What medications are safe during pregnancy?

Physician's perspective: Tylenol and Zantac are both relatively safe in pregnancy. Tylenol (formulations that contain only acetominophen) is Pregnancy class B (pretty much as good as it gets): meaning animal studies show no adverse effects. It is also one of the medications that have been studied the longest in pregnancy. Acetominophen is safe during lactation. Be careful using Tylenol if you have liver problems or have been diagnosed with pre-eclampsia. Zantac is also pregnancy class B. Lactation is considered probably safe. Calcium-based and Magnesium-based antacids such as Tums, Maalox, Mylanta are also safe for reflux during pregnancy. Aspirin is pregnancy class D (and most NSAIDS): positive evidence of human fetal risk. However, if maternal benefit outweighs fetal risk in patients with life-threatening conditions, your doctor may prescribe it.

Q&A: What medications are safe during pregnancy?

Andrea I was prescribed Zantac and Tylenol by 3 different dr and 2 pharmacists in the past 9 months. So I am not sure where you heard that info from.

brendadmc |

Q&A: What medications are safe during pregnancy?

Tylenol is still considered 100% safe. Zantac has not been updated either they are both Class B drugs which is the most any pregnant woman can ask for. No known risk to pregnancy.

Q&A: What medications are safe during pregnancy?

@Andrea, That's interesting. Where did u see this info? According to www.safefetus.com, medicinenet, and the FDA, Tylenol and Zantac still carry a FDA Risk Category B rating. That means: * Controlled studies done on animals in reproduction do not indicate risk to the fetus. Considered safe during all phases of pregnancy. Thanks!

Q&A: What medications are safe during pregnancy?

This article is so misleading if you are looking for something safe to take. There is not a single drug OTC or prescription that is deemed safe for pregnant woman because the FDA will not allow testing on pregnant women. They have done testing on animals and while we may be similar we are not the same. They have no idea what effect it will have on a child in 1, 5, 10 years. Your best bet is to avoid all of it if you can.

Q&A: What medications are safe during pregnancy?

Regarding the use of Sudafed while pregnant. My doctor prescribed it to me in my second trimester to help me with a bad cold. When I questioned my doctor about the safety of its use she indicated to me that the ingredients in the prescription strength drug she was giving me are different from the over the counter kind - which is not safe, and probably what this article is referring to. I also suffer from migraines and formerly took Imitrex for treatment. I do take Tylenol but agree that it really doesn't do much! My doctor told me to have some caffiene to help open up your blood vessels. She also precribed me Vicadin to help combat the pain if I really needed it - not to be taken all the time she said, but it is better for the fetus if i take Vicadin in moderation than to end up puking and becoming dehydrated and stressed.

Q&A: What medications are safe during pregnancy?

I also suffer from migraines and have NEVER gotten any relief from an OTC medication. However, I found that if I take 2 tylenol as soon as I start seeing auras, and before the headache actually starts, I don't get a migraine. It really is quite amazing considering I've suffered with horrible migraines that last for days, for over 20 years.

Also - my mom is a nurse and she told me to try taking Papaya Enzyme to help with heartburn. So far it has worked pretty well, better than Tums ever did! It is natural and can be found in the vitamins section at the drug store.

Q&A: What medications are safe during pregnancy?

This is not really a answer, but at the top of the comments people were talking about lactose intolerantce. I have never had a problem before not even with my other 3 pregnancys, but with this pregnancy (my 4th) Everytime I have ANY milk, cheese, yougart exc.. I get very sick, stomech cramps, throwing up and if I lay down right after a cup of milk and fall asleep (so I wont throw it up) I have potty troubles the next morning. Is that the same as being LI?

Q&A: What medications are safe during pregnancy?

I am a big fan of toughing it all out and avoiding any meds at all costs. In my 2nd trimester, however, I had a cold with a nasty fever. My fever was getting higher no matter how much I rested and drank up water so I took 1 tylenol which was just enough to break the fever. I'm now5 1/e weeks away from my due date, and baby is healthy as can be. For headaches, my midwife said I can have a can of coke or a small cup of coffee which the few times I've had a bad enough headache, they work. I prefer the small coffee bc I don't like sugary coke. Cafiene is perfectly safe so long as you don't drink excessive amounts or have it on a daily basis. Its safer than tylenol and any other pill. My friend is also expecting and she gets chronic migraines. She now drinks a little coffee here and there when its unbearably bad. Also keep yourself hydrated. I drink at least 2 liters of water a day. If you are uncertain of anything ask your OBGYN or MIDWIFE!!! They know you and your baby better than any article they will know what's best for you if any kind of OTC may be needed. Don't let everything you read worry you. Every site and book out there has something different to say. Trust your DR

Q&A: What medications are safe during pregnancy?

My dr. told me for my all year, indoor and outdoor allergies, I could take Zyrtec or any generic form of it. I take it daily and have for years. I also know Claratin or Alavert have the loratadine drug and that is found pretty safe. As for nose sprays, I am not sure on otc but some of the prescription ones need to be watched. I was on generic flonase and had to switch. More because of lack of testing than anything bad had happened. I also take several other prescription meds, omeprazole is the Rx name for Prilosec and I am soooo happy that I take that daily instead of dealing with heartburn! Just make sure to talk with your dr. I am also on an anti-anxiety med that some studies have worried about, but I am on a low dose and my dr, husband, and I all thought it was better to have me in a safe mind frame through out the pregnancy and after than to worry about any potentials that could happen to the baby. If you can't get in touch with your dr, leave a message with their nurse. They pretty much know the answers as well as the dr and can get back to you sooner!

I have extremely bad nasal congestion. I was actually supposed to have surgery in August to remove nasal polyps but my ENT cancelled due to my pregancy. Q&A: What medications are safe during pregnancy?

I am P.A., Regardless of what your doctor states, it is unknown. I mean really how many woman will allow drug testing on their unborn fetus.. Ahhh, None of us.... So they gage the side effects from animal testing on fetus results. If you build any tolerance to a chemical it will be in your blood stream and will be transferred to the fetus... Keep in mind, a population of people unforgivably use toxic chemicals while pregnant and have perfectly healthy children. As long as you don't have a level you don't risk toxicity= damage.I hope this answers some questions. I am 6 weeks today!!!!!!!!!

Here is an article I found on sudafed and birth defects: http://www.otispregnancy.org/files/pseudoephedrine.pdf My entire group of physicians agree that sudafed is safe if taken as directed by your dr. I don't think that my physician would put me or my baby at risk. I agree with ashleigh, just think of all the mothers who take street drugs while pregnant and have healthy babies. With all the information out there, it's crazy that us or our parents or grandparents even made it out of the womb, especially when it was considered "safe" to drink, smoke, and maybe do drugs during their pregnancies.

Q&A: What medications are safe during pregnancy?

EXCEDRIN FOR MIGRAINES: I have asked 3 OB's and all have said that Excedrin is safe enough to use occassionally during pregnancy BUT ONLY up until the 20th week. Double check this with your Dr. It is not published but they all were very confident about its safety for my migraines at this point in my pregnancy (just finishing my 1st trimester). There's just something amazing about (either) aspirin, or it's combination with acetomenaphin (tylenol's ingredient) and caffeine (all 3 of these are in Excedrin). I've tried everything else...peppermint oil, icepacks, dark rooms, sleep, neck massage...you name it. I waited through 24 hrs of an awful migraine & eventually decided to trust my OB on the Excedrin. Relief in 30 minutes tops. I don't plan to do it often but I think it's true what others have said here: if you take something occassionally during pregnancy (knowingly or unknowingly) our bodies can most likely handle it and keep the baby safe. Human bodies are actually pretty smart, tough & resilient.

Q&A: What medications are safe during pregnancy?

Tylenol PM is just tylenol (acetameniphen) and Benedryl, both of which are considered safe. Like anything, only take it if you absolutely have to. Plus, though one side effect of Benedryl is being sleepy, that goes away when you take it regularly. So if you take much of it, it will stop making you sleepy. Due to having artificial hips, making higher blood clot risk, plus doing IVF, which also has higher blood clot risk, I was put on 1 baby aspirin a day. Only do that when your doctor says to, though. Ambien has been tested very little but they think it's safe, though the most recent studies show lower birth weights, but only take it when your doctor says and then as little as possible for it to work.

I see to many questions about Tylenol PM that scare me. If you have a headache, Tylenol is safe but if you are simply trying to go to sleep - READ THE LABEL. ZzzQuil is benedryl. Tylenol is Tylenol + benedryl. We had a friend of the family die during a simple colonoscopy because of liver failure caused by his daily use of Tylenol PM for 2+ years for sleeping issues. The excessive and unnecessary doses of Tylenol were the direct cause. Look at all the OTC sleepaids - predominantly benedryl. Look at a OTC generic allergy medication next to the same store brand of sleep aid - THE EXACT SAME THING AND DOSE. Please do not put additional stress on your liver by taking tylenol PM just to help your sleep.
