Q&A: Vaccinations okay during pregnancy?

My last period was more than seven weeks ago. I've taken multiple tests, including a blood test and all have been negative. With my son, I did the same thing and couldn't get a positive test until I was 9 weeks. I have vaccinations for school that I am due for and need to know whether or not I should take them. What do you suggest? -- Mrs.Mandy

The Bump Expert

Depending on which test you use, you may be able to tell if you are pregnant in as little as a week after ovulation. A blood test is the earliest test to show a positive result (7-11 days after ovulation), while some home pregnancy test kits can test positive at the time of your missed period (14 days after ovulation) in up to 95% of pregnant women. If your last period was more than seven weeks ago and all tests since then have been negative, then it is unlikely that you are pregnant. But, it is difficult to say for sure without knowing the length of your usual cycles (the number of days from the first day of one period to the first day of the next).

With this information, if you still think that you might be pregnant, you should ask specifically which vaccinations you need. Some vaccinations (e.g. the flu shot) are safe during all trimesters of pregnancy. In fact, it is recommended that all pregnant women and women who plan on being pregnant during flu season (October through May) receive the inactivated flu vaccination. Other vaccinations such as the rubella vaccination should not be given during pregnancy. The rubella vaccination is what we call a live attenuated vaccine, meaning it consists of live but weakened virus. If you receive this vaccination during pregnancy, it can theoretically cross the placenta and affect the fetus although there have been no reports of adverse fetal effect in women who were inadvertently vaccinated during the first trimester. For more information, visit the CDC’s website. It’s a great resource with information about vaccination during pregnancy.

just to be on the safe side dont do any vaccinations untill your 9weeks or untill you're postive you're not pregnant. Being in the military they won't dare let you get any vaccinations if you think you are or know you're pregnant, because that's putting a live virus in you're body.

Make an appointment with your doctor to do a blood test to find out for sure. Sometimes clinics are persnickity about doing blood tests but if they know that you need to be 100% certain because of your vaccinations they might be easier on you. But make sure to talk to your doctor about getting the Swine Flu vaccine, I keep seeing it on the news that children and pregnant women are among the most vulnerable, so if you plan on becoming pregnant get it.

Ask to have titers drawn to check your current immunity. You may not even need the vaccinations if your school will accept the titers. I'm required to have MMR and varicella for nursing school, but my titers show I already have sufficient immunity.

Q&A: Vaccinations okay during pregnancy?

I just made an appointment to get my vaccines for the seasonal flu and H1N1. I am scared to get it now. So many people are claiming they miscarried shortly after the vaccine. What has been people's experiences with the vaccine on here? Im so worried!

sherry1028 | November 30 , 2009 3:28 PM

Q&A: Vaccinations okay during pregnancy?

I got both the seasonal flu vaccine and the H1N1 vaccine (after a long process to track one down)...I was a little apprehensive about getting the H1N1 because the only injectable vaccine available was one that contained thimerisol (a mercury based preservative)...But after reading that there are really only trace amounts of mercury in the vaccine and that the body rids of it quickly, and that the benefits of getting the shot outweigh the risk of actually getting swine flu, I decided to go for it. I was 34 weeks at the time. For those women who are less far along, I have not heard anything about the H1N1 causing miscarriage, and my sister in-law (who is also preggers), got her H1N1 shot at 9 or 10 weeks which is still considered a high risk time for miscarriage.

I accidentally submitted before I was done with the previous answer! sorry! My sis in-law is fine, still pregnant, and past the 12 week hurdle (after her H1N1) so I do not think that there is anything to worry about :)

Q&A: Vaccinations okay during pregnancy?

im 6w4d PG and i was a little nervous about getting the flu shot and the H1N1 shot, which i got at 4weeks. After reading lots of research and the fact that pregnant women & women who plan on becoming pregnant SHOULD get the shots, i decided it would be worth it. The H1N1 shot they give pregnant women is an unadjundant (spell?) vaccine which is completely safe. the adjundant vaccine is giving to non pregnant women.

The links didn't go over right! It's all information on why NOT to get the vaccine though. People, it's perfectly fine to get the flu. It'll make you stronger and if you're already healthy it most likely won't do much damage at all. Do your research people, the pharmaceutical companies are not always out for our good. Also, 5 consecutive flu shots increases your chances 10 fold of getting alzheimers later in life. Also go to Mercola.com and look at the stories flooding in from pregnant ladies having miscarriages. Also again, look up the ingredients in the flu shots. NOT GOOD :(

Q&A: Vaccinations okay during pregnancy?

It makes me sad to think so many pregnant women are getting the H1N1 vaccine. I'm choosing not to. Why? Because I have faith in my own immune system. Also, the H1N1 vaccine has never been tested by the FDA, and it contains mercury. Yikes! My original OB/GYN pressured me to get the H1N1 shot, so I switched doctors. Be careful ladies, educate yourselves, do your research. Don't let the media hype get to you. :)

0danielle0 | December 14 , 2009 3:28 PM

Q&A: Vaccinations okay during pregnancy?

I got the seasonal flu shot before I got PG and then the H1N1 at 4.5 weeks PG...I'm now 14 weeks and my baby is doing very well. It's a personal decision. I got it because H1N1 hit our area hard and I have a type-1 diabetic husband who cannot afford to get sick. SO...I not only got the vaccine to protect myself and my baby but to protect my high-risk husband as well. You have to make the right decision for you and trust your instincts. If you don't feel that it's safe, don't get it but your immune system takes a dump when you're pregnant (I had a common cold that hung on for 4 weeks) so you have to make the decision for yourself.

Q&A: Vaccinations okay during pregnancy?

Please do not listen to misinformation. The H1N1 shot is incredibly important to get. The FDA DID test it and it is completely safe. Getting this variant of flu is much more detrimental to your baby than NOT getting the shot. I have a student I teach who is in need of a double lung transplant because of H1N1. Perfectly fine on a Friday in class and was being medivac'ed by Sunday. We are holding fundraisers now through the end of the school year to help support his family financially. I am highly offended when people say that the flu is "no big deal". I don't mean to be dramatic, but it isn't media hype. It can be devastating.

Q&A: Vaccinations okay during pregnancy?

I understand if you choose not to get flu shots... plenty of people don't, some die others never have a problem. It's your choice, but don't cite .com and .org websites (which I could create in my spare time with made up information) as the basis for your choice. Some vaccines have minimal amounts of mercury, so does tuna, but plenty of people still eat it. Check out this site: http://www.cdc.gov/nchs/FASTATS/deaths.htm one of the top ten causes of death •Influenza and Pneumonia: 56,326 (out of 2,426,264) I don't see flu shots on that list... Every time you get in your car there's the possiblity of something happening to you but the pros outweigh the cons. Which is exactly how I feel about flu shots. Also most vaccines do not contain live cultures.... they used to and the nasal H1N1 does, but it's always best to contact a healthcare professional before getting vaccinations. p.s. since I'm sure this will come up there is no scientifically proven link between autism and vaccines. There was one study done by a man, who was sued, that did indicate a link, which has never been replicated despite many attempts (it would be repeatable if it was true), that is often cited as proof of a link.

Ask your Dr. if immunizations are safe for pregnant women, and if so, at what time. You're a woman, you know your body, and if you think you're expecting, chances are that you're right. Take all normal pregnancy precautions until your hunch is confirmed. God Bless! -Lira

As far as the H1N1 vaccine goes- a shot is a lot less painful with far less risk than ending up being on a ventilator and having to have an emergency c-section b/c you're body cannot handle actually having H1N1...saw this happen several times in 2009-2010 winter season and heard about it happening A LOT across the country... I got both shots last year and I was only probably 5-6 weeks pregnant and had no issues.. weigh your pros and cons...

NO ONE - pregnant or not - should be getting vaccinated! You could just crack open a mercury thermometer and drink that - becuase mercury (thimerosal) is in the vaccines. Yes, also look at the CDC's website about all the ingredients in the vaccines - aluminum foil, ABORTED fetal tissue....you want that crossing your placenta???

Question - has anyone heard any news on the Pertussis Vaccine (Whopping cough)? I asked my doctor if this was safe to take during pregnancy, but I haven't heard anything back yet. I'm 29 weeks & am thinking it would be best to wait until the baby is born before getting the vaccine. Any comments?

Q&A: Vaccinations okay during pregnancy?

I had a severe reaction to a vaccine (seizures, migraines, frequent vomiting, memory loss, violent/paranoid episodes, among other things, all lasting 2 1/2 years until I found a competent doctor.) The CDC/FDA get their safety information from the drug companies (or companies paid by the drug companies to vet their data - same thing.) Check out VAERS on any vaccine you may have to take - you'll find more thorough reporting of side effects there. It's estimated that 1-10% of vaccine injuries are reported. I'm still pro-vaccine, but it has to be done safely, and I would NEVER try a formula that's been on the market for less than three years.

Vaccinations can be dangerous at any stage of pregnancy (based on real scientific studies and not just what is peddled by the people selling them to you). Make sure that for each vaccine, you investigate the possible side effects and most importantly the INGREDIENTS. The flu shot has thermisol, which contains MERCURY and should be nowhere near an unborn or young child! Read up on anything you put into your body if you are concerned about potential hazards

No one knows for sure these vaccinations are safe during pregnancy! It is all one big human experiment. Remember thalidomide was safe. All the Prozac pregnant women took was safe. What we do know is that the original flu vaccine research was seriously flawed. (Lancet Aug, 08). Like every other drug or medical treatment, consider risks against benefits. Generally, vaccines that contain inactivated (killed) viruses can be given during pregnancy. Vaccines that contain live viruses aren't recommended for pregnant women. The only vaccine routinely recommended during pregnancy is an influenza (flu) shot for women who are pregnant during flu season — typically November through March. The flu shot is made from an inactivated virus, so it's safe for both you and your baby. Avoid the nasal spray vaccine, which is made from a live virus. Cheap prescription drugs

I was wondering about the pertussis vaccination. I did not see that mentioned here, but it seems like with the commercials and what I've seen on shows like "The Doctors" that it is safe to get the pertussis vaccination in the third trimester and that it should be done. I'm going to ask my doc, but has anyone gotten the pertussis vaccine while pregnant? Also, I am unusually entertained by the wording of the spam comments on this posting. Usually they are just an annoyance, but today I find them hilarious. Especially the one about going pee. Definitely "outstanding and speechless" stuff!

Q&A: Vaccinations okay during pregnancy?

Generally, vaccines that contain inactivated (killed) viruses can be given during pregnancy. Vaccines that contain live viruses aren't recommended for pregnant women. The only vaccine routinely recommended during pregnancy is an influenza (flu) shot for women who are pregnant during flu season — typically November through March. The flu shot is made from an inactivated virus, so it's safe for both you and your baby. Avoid the nasal spray vaccine, which is made from a live virus. Buy Lipitor Online

I believe that medicine is not proven benefits of vaccination. It is especially dangerous for young children to make them. Instead of playing Mobile Casino and spend huge amounts of money on a daily basis we could transfer the money to the development of medicine or sick children. Do you agree with me?

Q&A: Vaccinations okay during pregnancy?

Ideally, women of child-bearing age should be immunized before becoming pregnant to protect their babies against serious diseases. For instance, rubella causes serious damage to the unborn fetus and is preventable by rubella vaccine. Varicella (chickenpox) can cause birth defects in the fetus and fatal pneumonia in the mother; it is preventable by varicella vaccine. Tetanus in the newborn, often fatal, is prevented if the mother has been immunized, as is the case with many other vaccine-preventable diseases. Buy Lanoxin Online Buy Zovirax Online

There's no such thing as a safe vaccine, I suggest reading the ingredient inserts on the vaccines so that you can see all the toxins that will be going into your body. Q&A: Vaccinations okay during pregnancy?

It depends on the type of vaccine you're considering. In general, doctors recommend that pregnant women avoid any vaccines that use live, attenuated (weakened) viruses, such as the MMR (measles, mumps, rubella) shot. In theory the weakened virus could give you an infection that you then could pass on to your baby. Vaccines that contain inactivated (or killed) viruses, such as the flu (influenza) shot, are generally considered safe during pregnancy. But you should always discuss the pros and cons of vaccines with your doctor or midwife before receiving any — especially during pregnancy.
