Is it safe to spray tan while pregnant?

Re: Is it safe to spray tan while pregnant?

The Bump Expert

Spray tanners or sunless tanners contain dihydroxyacetone, or DHA, which may be absorbed into your bloodstream either through your skin or by inhaling the spray. The effects of DHA on the pregnancy are simply not known -- but it hasn't been proven to be safe in pregnancy. My general advice is to avoid it until it has been proven to cause no harm.

re: Q: Spray tanning safe?

What about tanning beds? I know they are not safe for my skin but any proof that they harm the baby?

lbeezy |

re: Q: Spray tanning safe?

I'm gonna say, unsafe. Haven't you ever heard the myth of someone being locked in the tanning bed and her insides burning? Don't do it.

mrsrecon1126 |

re: Q: Spray tanning safe?

That is why they call it a myth...I have to say, insides don't burn, you can't get locked in, and it's fine. People lay out in the sun on the beach. Tanning beds are simply a portion of the rays the sun puts out - And is better for you than the sun!

Chloebrigette |

re: Q: Spray tanning safe?

Tanning beds aren't safe. The bulbs that are used are whats harmful to the baby, not the light.

haleyw458 |

re: Q: Spray tanning safe?

I'd Say not safe, i'd worry about the chemicals being absorbed into the skin and body and possibly affecting the baby. Even the slightest chance of a bad effect is NOT worth it.

Nicki1979 |

re: Q: Spray tanning safe?

it's unsafe to spray tan or lay in a tanning bed regardless if you're pregnant or not...the bulbs are UV light which can be very harmful to baby!

togetheratlast |

re: Q: Spray tanning safe?

My doc said it isn't the bulbs or the light its the fact that your body gets so warm and that while YOU can adjust to the heat your baby has no internal adjusments and it can have an affect on their nerve development. Kind of the same as going in a hot tub.

re: Q: Spray tanning safe?

any thoughts on Jergens tanning lotion?

lbeezy |

re: Q: Spray tanning safe?

UV rays in lights from tanning beds or excessive sun exposure can alter the DNA in every cell of your body. Not only is it unsafe during pregnancy, but it has the potential to alter the DNA that is passed on to any unconceived child through your ovum (egg) cells. The information about adjusting to the hot environment is also correct.

re: Q: Spray tanning safe?

to lbeezy, jergens tanning lotion is good if it is applied evenly, I used it before prom and for a while before my wedding. It does give you a soft glow and darkens your skin subtlely. About safety, I'm sure it is bc it's only lotion. It's good stuff

troutysgirl12 |

re: Q: Spray tanning safe?

Obviously I was joking about getting locked in. But I still say it isn't safe for your skin and especially the baby. I was sad to hear that spray tans aren't safe either since I'm going on a cruise next month for my babymoon. I will have to use the lotion as some of you suggested. Thanks!

mrsrecon1126 |

re: Q: Spray tanning safe?

My Dr. said no tanning at all. He said the most sensitive part of your body and whatever you put on your skin can get absorbed by the baby, so better safe than sorry and wait until after giving birth!!

Fitz0929 |

re: Q: Spray tanning safe?

Jergen's Lotion has DHA in it too (http://www.jergens.com/Our_Collection/Product_Detail.asp?ProductID=8). Just because something is a lotion, doesn't necessarily make is safe. I used Jergen's natural glow religiously before pregnancy and I was so disappointed to find I couldn't use it while pregnant. Avoiding all tanning products including lotions, spray on tans, and tanning beds while pregnant is probably the wisest course. Pale skin for 9 months is a small price to pay for a healthy baby.

I just read about this sunless tanner that does not contain DHA and it gets great reviews on non streaking and it smells great apparently. I may buy it to try it out. I cannot be pale all winter! re: Q: Spray tanning safe?

Uv lights from the sun are more harmful than tanning beds. My professor (male) at college did an extensive research project. I, being interested, found the same facts as him. The heat in the bed is what can be harmful. During my research I called several tanning salons who are board certified and tanning during pregnancy is fine IF your own body temperature does not rise over 100 degrees. They suggest keeping a thermometer in your mouth during your tanning session. I would recommend low pressure beds because they tend to be less heated. High pressure beds tan quick and fast putting out more heat...I'd stay away from the high pressure beds.

re: Q: Spray tanning safe?

I do work for a tanning franchise and the UV in the tanning beds are going to be better than outdoors because it is controlled. However, the reason why doctors advise not to tan is because of the heat factor. I have not used any of our products and I plan on checking out the DHA free sunless product for my out of town work trips!

I am getting ready to go on a caribbean vacation and I don't mine being white as a ghost. It is healthier all the way around prego or not. Don't get me wrong I was a life gaurd and was very tan all summer long for about 10 years. I don't like the things that are on my hands now because of it. I am only 33 years old and have old ladies hands. A little color is ok when not prego but no color for me while i am prego.

re: Q: Spray tanning safe?

Well, I think we all know that tanning in general whether inside or outside is not good for your skin. While you are pregnant, you do not want your body to reach over 102 degrees, which is the real reason why you shouldn't tan period. The obvious is that it can also give you skin cancer - this is not opinion, but a fact. The question, however, is in reference to "spray tanning". Spray tanning does contain chemicals that can be harmful to both you and your baby, but I don't think it compares to the damage you can do by actually tanning from a bed or sun. Just use caution when inhaling the fumes and do what you can not to breathe it in. I would say that you should only go 1 x every 2 weeks if you need to. Doctors are going to tell you both aren't good for you b/c they don't want to be held responsible if something ends up being wrong with your baby once it is born - that is their job!

re: Q: Spray tanning safe?

tanning beds are safe for the baby as long as you dont get overheated. doctors recommend only going 5-10minutes at a time. overheating can cause damage to nerves and spinal cord development in the baby. dont be in the bed for long and make sure a fan is on. a stand up bed is even recommended so you are not laying down on your back. every doctor is different so ask your doctor. uv rays will not go into your baby!! spray tans are fine as well. i do both and know people who do both and their kids are just fine!! ps. you can color your hair too!!

Q&A: Is it safe to spray tan while pregnant?

Although there has been no harm proven, I researched tanning for several years while I managed a tanning salon. DHA is no more harmful than anything else you breathe in, and I knew of hundred of women of the years who spray tanned and tanned in a tanning bed. Doctors don't recommend tanning in a tanning bed, BUT ONLY BECAUSE OF THE HEAT. Tanning can cause no harm to your baby, and the rays only reach 2 mm into the skin (about the thickness of cardboard). Just make sure you don't get too hot and tanning either way will be fine.

katiefili |

Q&A: Is it safe to spray tan while pregnant?

I agree with katiefili. I used to work at a tanning salon and I am smart tan certified. A woman should consult her doctor about tanning indoors. The only reason it would be unsafe is because of the amount of heat, just like you're told not go go in a hot tub or take a super hot bath. The bulbs and light themselves would do no harm. Also, there is no research for or against spray tanning for pregnant women. But, while I worked at the salon I ran into quite a few pregnant woman that came in to spray tan and had no adverse effects. One was a good friend of mine, who now has a very healthy 1 year old. I would say it would be fine to do in moderation.

Q&A: Is it safe to spray tan while pregnant?

I have a membership and do the VersaSpa spray tan regularly. I am currently 4 months pregnant. I asked the employees as well as my doctor-- both said it is fine. Just be careful to not inhale the fumes... (which why would you anyways?) My doctor said it's fine! (All of these personal opinions posted can really cause confusion and stress! Just ask your doctor!)

Q&A: Is it safe to spray tan while pregnant?

My mother has stage 4 metastatic melanoma from spending her whole life in tanning beds and out in the sun. It's totally unsafe to tan while not pregnant, so why would you risk your child's life too. Not smart!! I have heard on the other hand, that as long as the spray tan or lotion is vegetable oil based, that it is safe. Anybody else heard that??

Emmasmom04 |

Q&A: Is it safe to spray tan while pregnant?

I woudl say not safe. Spray tanning has not been around long enough to know the effects. Besides, what is more important, your "healthy glow" or your unborn child? I would play it on the safe side. Additionallt, I would not recommend tanning beds. The temperatures can get so hot that I would think that is unsafe for the baby and hormones are different meaning you could be more sensitive and potentially burn. Being pregnant and burned do not sound fun to me.

Michelle_Bennett |

Q&A: Is it safe to spray tan while pregnant?

I have asked my OB about this- she says tanning is fine. She said it is not healthy for mom, but it in no way harms the baby- UNLESS you over heat. It hasnothing to do with what type of ray it is because your baby has plenty of protection, so if you can stay cool in the tanning bed (some have real air conditioners in them- it's okay) However many places will not tan pregnant women so that if something happens in the pregnancy they can not go back on the tanning place. I choose not to tan- I spray tan- and it is not harmful to the baby at all.

Q&A: Is it safe to spray tan while pregnant?

Here's how my doctor explained both hair dye and spray tanning to me: "If tanning solution were absorbed into your blood system, your tongue, liver, stomach, eyes etc. would all go brown/orange and if you dyed your brown hair purple, your pubic, eyelashes, eyebrows, etc. would all go purple. So they are both fine. Things that enter the blood system are what are causes for concern. Each of these products are topical stains so to speak, they do not enter the blood stream or change the composition of your cells." Soooo, basically my doc green lighted them, his only warning was hormonal changes may cause colors and tones to come out differently. As for the dooms day baby comments I think it's a little harsh. As mentioned earlier, we as humans are exposed to worse things in a cheeseburger from a fast food resturant, wanting to be a little bronzed is not about loving yourself over the baby (I ate that cheeseburger over an organic grilled chicken salad knowing the cow was probably pumped with hGh), it's about wanting to feel a smidge attractive when you've put on 20 lbs, your boobs look like your smuggling flour sacks, your ankles no longer have indentations from the swelling, and your best facial feature if the new mustache and sideburns you're sporting. Give the girls a break.

rcduke02 |

Q&A: Is it safe to spray tan while pregnant?

i do not think that spray tanning is harmful to your baby, however, i got a spray tan at around 13 weeks and it made my body break out in a horrible rash! so be careful, with all the hormones you never know how your skin is going to react!

Q&A: Is it safe to spray tan while pregnant?

I seriously doubt any of the special education teachers students are in her class due to their mothers tanning. If mothers weren't concerned about things affecting their unborn children they wouldn't be on this site asking. While I agree that it's not a big deal to go 9 months pale some people tan for other reasons. I have psoriasis and I waited as long as possible to tan. Once my entire body was covered I asked my doctor if it was ok for me to tan. He said under normal circumstances he didn't advise it but with my skin disease he thought it would be good for me. His concern was also to not get to hot. Even after him saying it was ok I still asked several women including the tanning salon owner if they tanned while they were pregnant and they all said yes and everything was fine. I felt this was the better alternative than staying on the shots I was on before which has been the cause of 4 deaths. So, my advice, if you need to tan just be careful and don't get too hot.

Q&A: Is it safe to spray tan while pregnant?

I just called and left a msg at my OB's office. I have been using Jergens Tanning Lotion for years in the winter, just to make me feel prettier. I realized in the last 2 weeks that my boobs now look like a road map with all the little blue interstate lines, so I've started my Jergens reginmen again. I can't logically see how it could cause a problem. I've also had my hair dyed at the salon with foils & painted on. I believe what rcduke02 said. Plus I think about all the things my mother did pregenant with us, and I turned out fine. Bottom line is talk to your Doc.

Q&A: Is it safe to spray tan while pregnant?

I don't think it's selfish..about as selfish as fixing your hair, carefully choosing maternity clothes, or consuming foods/ drinks that are unhealthy for the baby. I think there's a fine line between selfish and just...being human. Doing drugs to satisfy a drug addiction= selfish. Simply asking about spray tans= not really that big of a deal. Just check with your Dr, they'll know best.

Come on women. You guys are all going to drive yourself crazy thinking about all these outrageous questions and things you cant do or the baby will be all screwed up. Eat right, get some exercise and dont smoke or drink. Its common sense, not about some tanning lotion or spray. Just be smart. And if you think it might not be very good to color your hair or do a spray tan or paint your nails, than just dont do it a ton. Any negative studies results arent from people doing it once or twice. during a 9 month period...

Q&A: Is it safe to spray tan while pregnant?

I have a friend who owns a tanning salon. I went with another friend so she could tan and I wasn't even allowed in the room while the tanning bed was on. It is harmful because of the bulbs that they use. I wouldn't do it.

LILMOMMY22 |

Q&A: Is it safe to spray tan while pregnant?

They say NEVER ever get into a tanning bed pregnant...only because it raises your core temperature and being pregnant you must keep your core body temp down (it's in the pregnancy books). It has nothing to do with the bulbs themselves necessarily...just standing next to a machine won't do you any harm but don't get inside of one. This is why they also advise you to never get into a jacuzzi while pregnant. A warm bath is fine because you're usually not fully submerged and the water does not stay hot for long. The books also say to never get into one of those spray-tan booths because it is not ventilated and you are forced to breathe in the harsh chemicals. Opt for an airbrushed-spray tan done by a professional since you are not enclosed in a booth and those are done pretty quickly. Though there are no scientific studies on what the chemicals in the spray tan do to your baby when absorbed into your skin, it is one of those "do-at-your-own-risk" type of things. They say the drugstore self-tanner lotions and sprays you can buy at the drugstore are safe also but then again there are no scientific studies. I would just recommend not to do it often during your pregnancy.

RachyD |

Q&A: Is it safe to spray tan while pregnant?

Effects on Skin Since the DHA affects the first layer of the skin only, the sugar-based chemical is not absorbed into the body and cannot reach the fetus. Thus it should be safe to use as long as the chemical does not penetrate the skin and as long as absorption does not occur. Because skin can be more sensitive during pregnancy, be sure to test spray a small area of skin prior to tanning the entire body. History of DHA DHA has been used in cosmetics since the 1960s. No problems have been reported regarding DHA being absorbed by the body. According to the American Pregnancy Association, "the only concern is whether the active ingredient, dihydroxyacetone (DHA), is able to penetrate the skin. Studies do not confirm that it can, but some health care providers encourage women to wait until after the first trimester, just to play it safe." Q&A: Is it safe to spray tan while pregnant?

It is actually safe to spray tan, tan in a tanning bed, or lay in the sun. YOU control the other factors...like everything when you are pregnant, do it in MODERATION. The main risk to your baby with regular tanning is the amount of heat you are exposed to. Today, the chemicals used in spray tans are much safer than in years past, just like hair dye or anything else. Don't be an idiot and do it every day. In tanning beds, go for the newer types, or high tech models- many of them don't even get hot. Do not use an old fashioned bed, or go for longer than 15 mins at a time. Use your brain, and you will be fine. If it feels wrong, it usually is.

awhitehead8 |

Q&A: Is it safe to spray tan while pregnant?

I don't know about spray tanning but as far as laying in a tanning bed goes, the only reason it isn't safe for baby is because the fetus cannot control it's internal temperature so if you get too hot, so does baby. It's just like being in the "real" sun for a long amount of time. It's not good for you either. All these people talking about it cooking your insides.. UM, it's not an oven people! If that were the case people would have stopped tanning a long time ago. Get real!

Q&A: Is it safe to spray tan while pregnant?

People say that UV lights are bad...but I wonder what wavelength the light is set at in the bed. Some specific wavelengths cause thymine dimers in DNA strands...but those can be blocked by plastic, so I kind of doubt they would penatrate all the way through....I think the main thing to worry about is overheating and tanning TOO much. I for one am the whitest I have been since I can remember and not liking it one bit. I am kinda of considering tanning in a bed with the top open for maybe 5 min at a time so I can wear shorts and dresses without looking like a ghost. Still skeptical though.

Melanoma is the only cancer that will spread from mother to baby through the placenta-- therefore tanning bed are not safe. Sunless tanners are simply just stain on your skin so they are 'safe'. Whether or not they are healthy or good for mother or baby is unknown but there has been no research that has proved harm.

Q&A: Is it safe to spray tan while pregnant?

Spray tanning is safe, jsut wear cotton or nose plugs. If you tan outside you are more likely to get over heated than in a bed for 10 min, everything in moderation. Think about all the women who have perfectly healthy babies who tanned before finding out...I personally am tanning outside. but I am a spray tan operator, I own my own company I spray women all the time. I have had no issues. Now it only takes one sure, but it is a persoanl choice. Remember before when we were little moms did all sorts of things we are told are bad now & we are ok.. so... Moderation

Q&A: Is it safe to spray tan while pregnant?

I did some research on the topic of tanning while pregnant (not spray tans) According to the AAD (dermatologist association) there is nothing proving that UV rays do damage to our skin. It is just as likely for people who don't go tanning to develop skin cancer as those who tan regularly. And for women who are pregnant, the UV rays do NOT harm the fetus in any way. The only thing that could potentially harm your unborn child from tanning in anyway is overheating while in a tanning bed. The UV rays are only absorbed in the first couple layers of skin and don't get anywhere near the baby. If it could, anyone who tans would literally cook themselves on the inside... which doesn't happen. Hope this helps!!!

I'm confused on how an article about spray tanning (Mystic Tan) and self tanners has turned into something about Tanning Beds. They are 2 total different things. I am prego with my 3rd and tanning beds are a no no. As for sunless spray tanning or self-tanners there is no evidence of it being safe or not. I would however much rather use a self tanning lotion and not breath in the spray from the mystic tan.

sumpay1028 |

Q&A: Is it safe to spray tan while pregnant?

I was not even signed up for this site till reading these comments. Spray tanning is deff out due to the DHA and the fact that it is sugar based and messes with your blood sugar levels. Also to hit on the tanning bed part you should not tan in a tanning bed while pregnant due to heat on. The baby can not control its body temper like we can. I have worked in a tanning salon since i was 15 and I'm now 22..I have plenty of experience on this subject! However, the comment i read about "microwaving" your baby. Get real, if you believe the tanning bed is anywhere near comparable to microwave go put some food in the tanning bed and see how fast it cooks! haha that comment made me laugh. Also i am almost 15 weeks pregnant and I don't do either I just get a ltitle natural sunlight and have my handy lotions with the subtle tint in them! works just as good!(:

Q&A: Is it safe to spray tan while pregnant?

DHA is in prenatal vitamins now for brain health. (My doctor made sure mine had DHA in them, although a few years ago when my sister was pregnant, vitamins did not contain DHA.) My doc gave me the go ahead for a spray tan before my wedding next month. (I'm 4 months.)

OnceUponAPickle |

Q&A: Is it safe to spray tan while pregnant?

The DHA you are referring to is docosahexaenoic acid, which is vital for women's health during pregnancy. The DHA found in spray tanning lotions and solutions is called dihydroxyacetone, which works with the amino acids in your skin to turn your skin brown. There is a HUGE difference and the fact that even Dr.'s don't know this is really sad. I have a spray tanning business and have been spray tanning since 2008 and I have had 4 miscarriages. Coincidence? Maybe.... but it is a possibility that DHA is the culprit and I am going to see a Naturopath to try and detox this out of me. To get spray tan once or twice during pregnancy (3rd trimester), is probably no big deal.. but to be exposed to it as I have.. probably a bigger deal.. PLEASE educate yourself before you assume anything.

karin.ivancic |

Q&A: Is it safe to spray tan while pregnant?

My doctor said that sugar based spray tanning is safe as long as you can find a salon that uses this solution. They are very difficult to find and without calling around, you wouldn't know. They don't last as long as DHA solutions.
